@uptownsoul I think you've misunderstood both points.
Yes, the PS5 version alone accounted for 32% of sales. But as I mentioned before, there are more PS5 consoles sold in the UK compared to Series X/S, so a larger userbase to sell to. I'd hazard a guess there are at least 1.5x more PS5 owners in the UK. Obviously we have no idea of the Xbox sales ratio between console variants, because Smart Delivery unifies them all under one banner for cross-gen games.
As for Horizon FW, like I stated, an exclusive does not deterrent sales of a multiformat game. I think if anything, Sony might be looking at Elden Ring selling 30% on PC and be thinking about how much cash they are missing out not releasing day one PC ports. Elden Ring sold 2.5x more than the launch week of Horizon FW. Even if you take the Xbox 29% out, that's a big chunk left on the table.
1. PlayStation consoles are something like 2-1 compared to Xbox in the UK. PS5 reached 1m consoles sold in the UK back in September 2021. Series X/S only reached 1M in January 2022.
2. As we've seen from data from Sony, 1st party exclusives actually aren't the biggest sellers overall. The only 1st party exclusives to make the PS5 top 20 sales chart for 2021 in the EU were Spiderman MM at #4 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at #14.
Excellent news! RE2 and RE3 Remakes already looked pretty damn good, so can't wait to see more examples of how they've improved them. Also great news for Series S owners, as you unfortunately play them using Xbox One settings right now, so will be great to actually see the upgrade over that.
Already own and completed GOTG, so nothing of interest for me. I highly recommended people check it out though. Absolutely superb and highly underrated game that sort of got lost in the busy period last year.
Also hilarious how MS again come at Square Enix with the cheque book for a Game Pass deal, yet we're still waiting on FF7 Remake!
Elden Ring is my first Souls games and I'm finding it more accessible than what I expected. The game is brutal but fair and due to the open world nature, if I get stuck, I can just wonder off elsewhere and level up, find new gear etc. Took me about 15+ attempts to defeat Margit the Fell, but boy did it feel so satisfying when I beat him.
My PS+ expires in April and I'm waiting for more details on this before renewing.
Based on this info, $16 a month is WAY too expensive for me for only an EA Play style service when Game Pass Ultimate is $15 for day one games on console, PC and Cloud.
Let's hope Sony have kept the cheaper annual prices to save a little bit faith, otherwise this is a huge L on their behalf.
Loved the game myself, but my initial reaction upon was the games E3 announcement was 'meh', simply because The Avengers left a sour taste in my mouth and the marketing was poor.
The Crash games would be huge for Game Pass in terms of kid-friendly titles. Same with Spyro. COD obviously goes without saying. If they could do a World of Warcraft console version, that would also help fill that void since there's still no FF 14 on Xbox.
No thanks. Gyro controls annoyed the hell out of me playing Breath of the Wild trying to aim and then that crap kicked in and I had to steady the handheld. It's either pure traditional controller or keyboard and mouse for me. There's no in-between.
It's a weird situation. Developers seem to be very lazy at optimizing for the Series S. The same happened with Guardians of the Galaxy at launch. No 60FPS mode on Series S. Fans complained. Then it was added in about a month later.
Glad I finished it when it came out. I was expecting HUGE improvements, but it seems like a very bare bones next-gen upgrade. I will reserve full judgement until Digital Foundry take a look, but on paper and from the video they've released, it doesn't look much better.
If I was MS, I'd wait for Babylon's Fall to flop, and then swoop in and buy them up if possible. Xbox sorely needs more Japanese talent. They only have Tango at the moment, and Platinum can make some superb action games when on form. Obviously they could revive Scalebound if that was an option as well.
I'd like the ability to activate/disable Quick Resume on select titles. For example, games with an online connection don't benefit from Quick Resume, so it would be cool to disable it for those titles.
@themightyant I think the only reason they tried to double the price of Gold was to push those users towards Game Pass Ultimate, since it's obvious they want to eventually scrap Gold, but can't until they supplement that Gold sub revenue with enough Game Pass Ultimate sub revenue. Thankfully they realized after the outrage what a big mistake that was.
@uptownsoul 100% agree with this. The issue will be when developers are using proprietary game engines that aren't optimized with Series S in mind. However, stuff like Metro Exodus and the Matrix Awakens demo show the console is more than capable of offering a budget next-gen experience going forward.
I think the key difference with Game Pass compared to something like Netflix is the subscription fee isn't the only revenue source to be made from the content offered. The games are still available for purchase. You have DLC for games. You have MTX for games. The list goes on.
So like Phil Spencer hints at, they don't need to increase the subscription fee in order to account for buying all these studios.
@uptownsoul The game is seriously unoptimized. Digital Foundry has already stated that the problem is the console versions just use the 'High' pre-sets across the board rather than actually optimizing setting for consoles.
A Series X and PS5 are more powerful than a RTX 2060, which can run the game at 1440p 60FPS with optimized settings. A Series S is similar to a GTX 1060, which can run the game at 900p 60FPS using FSR Quality Mode, which is available to use on consoles.
So it's all possible on consoles. It's just they've chosen to use the 'High' pre-sets for everything rather than proper optimization to maximise console performance.
@Dezzy70 We're only 2 weeks into February and we've already had Rainbow Six: Extraction day one, the Hitman Trilogy and Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. I think you're expectations are way too high if you aren't happy with that. LOL
The only mention of platforms I've seen so far is on the official website saying "coming to PC and consoles". I guess I'd assume since it's F2P it should be on Switch, PS and Xbox.
Strange move from a business perspective to be honest but good for gamers.
Having mainline COD games as Xbox exclusive would have been THE biggest draw they could have had to draw lots of casuals into the Xbox eco-system. Obviously having future COD titles day one in Game Pass is also huge, but not enough to draw people who literally only buy COD and FIFA away from PlayStation.
What is likely, is one of them to get a studio, which wouldn't cause any issue as long as they want to sell. Look at Platinum Games right now, clearly looking for either investment or acquisition. Arc System Works would be a great fit for PlayStation with EVO, and Mistwalker could be a great fit for Xbox with JRPG on console and mobile.
I think Platinum must be desperate for money. In the past, they were silent and made Xbox look like the bad guys for cancelling Scalebound, and now, all of a sudden, they are doing some serious ass kissing. lol
@Spaceman-Spiff The problem is most likely Techland's 'C-Engine' doesn't allow for DRS, a bit like how over on PS5, even Naughty Dog's proprietary engine doesn't allow for DRS.
The problem here is they've aimed for the sky with the PC version and then had to scale down for consoles, where as most devs actually aim for consoles as the priority and then scale up for PC. The game is cross-gen and to only be running at 1080p 60FPS on Series X and PS5 is a disgrace.
@InterceptorAlpha To quote Hideki Kamiya from an interview about Scalebound;
"We weren't experienced enough. We were developing on the Unreal engine. We also lacked the necessary know-how to build a game based on online features. The hurdles we had to overcome were very big. We weren't experienced enough and couldn't get over that wall, leading to what happened in the end."
Reminds me so much of Reggie from Nintendo back in the day. He wasn't as big of a gamer as Phil Spencer clearly is, but he resonated with the fans as they could relate to them. Now look at someone like Jim Ryan for Sony, and you can see why the brand turned a tad sour in terms of PR. Not a gamer, just a typical CEO with no clear message.
You can tell this guy has grown up with PS dominating the market. Did he forget how Sony forced Sega out of the console market? Did he forget when Sony bought all the studios they have today? Did he forget when Sony buys up timed exclusives? Did he forget when Sony need killed off Xbox?
Will be nice to finally get the last of these Bethesda timed exclusives out into the wild so they can fully focus on the Xbox/PC stuff going forward. Speaking of Tango Games, I do hope they have The Evil Within 3 in development. The director of the 2nd game, John Johanas, apparently has a project in the works, so hopefully it's that!
Well, the Game Pass line-up for the second half of Feb will be announced in about a week, so it wouldn't be a shock to see this Goldeneye remaster included in that release statement.
@awp69 Considering PlayStation has the marketing rights, it's highly unlikely. The leaked RE: Village marketing deal documents shows Sony include a clause to prevent any subscriptions services such as Game Pass until the marketing deal expires.
Seems to be a Cyberpunk job. Aims for the sky for PC users, and then the console version is an unoptimized mess. A great example of why I don't pre-order games these days.
There hasn't been a good GT game since PS3, so fingers crossed this is a return to form. We'll have to wait until the new Forza Motorsport releases for proper comparisons in terms of graphics though.
Wouldn't believe a word Geoff Keighley says. He's just trying to keep his name relevant. Do you honestly think these billion dollar deals get leaked without some serious legal ramifications? @Tharsman $3.6 billion for Bungie is day-light robbery in my eyes. You only gain one IP and the games stay multiformat anyway, so your platform gains nothing to entice gamers to your eco-system. I think the only reason Sony stumped up so much is because they are desperate for multiplayer live service experience and infrastructure, and Bungie have that in abundance.

Two things we need to remember.

I expect to see it on Game Pass later in the year. LOL
Re: Elden Ring Is The Biggest UK Launch Since Red Dead 2, Aside From COD & FIFA
@uptownsoul
Looking at the numbers for PS consoles, Elden Ring sold just over 2.5% more on that platform than Horizon FW did on launch week.
Still shocked that Elden Ring is the biggest UK launch outside of COD and FIFA since RDR 2 back in 2019. Crazy.
Still can't believe a Souls game
