If you're an avid Fortnite player, you may be interested to know that the game added gyro controls to more platforms earlier this week in the form of PS4, PS5 and PC, which now makes Xbox the only platform not to support the feature.
Of course, there's a very good reason for this - Xbox controllers don't have motion sensors, so there's literally no way of implementing gyro aiming with the current Xbox controller design. And that's left some Fortnite fans very disappointed.
Ultimately, there's just no way around this for the team at Epic Games right now, and it doesn't look like gyro controls are going to be implemented in Xbox controllers at any point in the near future — maybe with the next console revision?
It's a real shame to sit on the sidelines as everyone else gets the feature, but that's the way it is for the time being.
Disappointed about the lack of gyro controls on Xbox (and Fortnite)? Let us know in the comments.

No thanks, not at all.
Unless I'm playing VR, I don't want motion controls at all. Don't use the gyro on my Switch, PS4, or my Steam controller. Been there. Done that. No thanks.
If I want the precision of a mouse and keyboard, I'll use a mouse and keyboard instead of an unsatisfactory stopgap in the form of a gyro.
Since returning to Xbox a couple of years ago I've felt this one feature that would benefit Xbox.
Don't know how or if they'll support gyro control but surely a title like Microsoft Flight Simulator would be perfect for gyro support.
Being an FPS fan I’d love to have more control options like Gyro! Doom Eternal 120FPS mode is the closest I’ve experienced to mouse aiming control, it’s very smooth, but still not as precise.
Atm, I’m playing Doom3 on PSVR with the Aim controller, as well as playing it on XBSX with a pad & the difference is night & day - the Aim is soo much better! When playing on the SX I get used to the slower aiming, but definitely would welcome other types of control 👍
Also, played some RE7 with PSVR & it uses your look direction to aim - so your head is like a giant gyro! It works extremely well, much, much better than just a pad..
It's a shame that the PS5 controller has some cool features we just don't get on Xbox despite the controllers still costing a lot.
I was hoping they'd implement some extra features in the move to the Series controllers rather than just having a couple minor design tweaks.
It's a tragedy, since gyro is objectively superior to the right analog for aiming.

Thankfully, the XIM Nexus just had a soft launch a couple weeks ago, and is the first controller to make gyro aiming possible for Xbox games across the board. I ordered one and thought for sure it was too good to be true. But no. It's a miracle
Been playing Monster Hunter World, Call of Duty Vanguard, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Doom, Doom Eternal, The Outer Worlds, Gears 5, Halo Infinite, and more. And it does exactly what it claims. The gyro feels just as good if not better than true mouse gyro.
So until Microsoft decides to revise their controllers with gyro, XIM Nexus is your only ticket out of the analog ghetto.
@Medic_Alert Absolutely! Love gyro controls for the fine tuned precision you just can't get with an analogue stick. There's always the option to turn it off if you don't want it.
I really wanted Xbox to integrate a few more features in their controller this time round, not least it would make developers more likely to use them if all consoles had that feature! It's still a great controller regardless, just a bit behind on the tech side.
Xbox does indeed need gyro.
Here's why;
If all three platforms supported gyro, we could really see the feature be incorporated in much more natural ways. As it is, gyro normally gets used as a replacement or supplimentary feature of other methods of control. So, like aiming instead or as well as the right stick. Having the feature be standard would mean that games in general could be designed with this addition in mind. I personally, would love to use Gyro for driving in games, while still using the right stick for general camera and aiming. You could actually have FPS games be much more intuitive to aim, shoot, and drive at the same time.
It could give birth or new life to genres of games. Car combat and Space combat games could be completely changed by the additional input method. Allowing you have better control over more of that dimension space instead of sacrifing one for aiming.
With crossplay games like Fortnite, and gyro controls being in the other platforms, Xbox players are missing out on both an experience and a level of competitiveness.
Last, it could really help the accessibility of gamers that might struggle with the stick.
@Richnj While I agree generally with your point (I said similar above) I don't think gyro should entirely replace controls like driving/steering. That's been tried and on the whole doesn't work well.
Where it DOES work well is in the fine subtle adjustments for steering/aiming etc. that just aren't possible with a small analogue stick. i.e. Keep analogue for larger movement but allow gyro on top of this for being more precision.
I agree if we saw feature parity across all consoles on this developers would be more likely to use it AND likely come up with some novel uses for it too.
Having used the steam controller a lot which has track pads and gyro aiming, I am converted to this and it's a shame that xbox does not allow for this feature.
Thumbsticks are superior for certain games like driving or souls like games but aiming is vastly superior for any aiming in third or first person games. I fully expect players using gyro aiming to have more success than those just using traditional thumbsticks.
I've said this was a huge miss, I absolutely expected they'd have gyros in the Series controllers and was shocked when they didn't add it. I'm not sure who decided not to include an obvious, standard feature in the console that's been the home of the shooter, but if Sony's (finally?) making a push on adding it and Xbox is the one left out, that's probably a bigger overall blow to Xbox than any buyout. I know I'd probably buy shooters on PS5 instead. I prefer the XB ecosystem and controller ergonomics but if it's lacking input controls available elsewhere, it's still the worse device.
MS wouldn't shy away from releasing a new controller mid-gen though. They've done it before, so they're not out for good. Heck, Sony's done it, too. But it's a massive miss. Now that Fortnite is doing it it'll quickly become standard everywhere but Xbox, I'd bet.
Would have appreciated gyro in Deathloop for the ps5. The fine tuning is crap. Takes me ages to line up a headshot or track moving enemy.
Microsoft are pretty poor for new controller innovation. Basically they stopped at the 360, changed the shape a bit and added a share button. Woweee!
Sony and Nintendo on the other hand are always trying new things, they don't all stick but its interesting to try.
This isn't to say I don't like the Xbox controller, I own many interations and use them almost every day. For basic gaming needs they're brilliant, but just boring.
I just had a thought, they did innovate a bit. The D-Pad, I like the new D-Pad... But, it's just molded plastic.
Nintendo got HD Rumble, IR sensors and Gyro, Playstation has the funny touch pad and the fancy trigger feel(don't remember the name)
Xbox, got a share button and a remolded D-Pad....
Oooh, and batteries. I like the AA batteries, it reduces the amount of electronic waste and they're easy to replace.
Not really innovation, but still nice when compared to the competition
(I'll stop spamming the comments now)
Ergonomically it’s not better. It works well enough for the y-axis aiming but for the x-axis twisting your controller from side to side is uncomfortable.
Me: hmm, gyro soun...
PX: FORKNIFE FANS WANT GYRO!!
Me: FOOHK GYRO!!🤣
@NEStalgia That's why Xbox does have Keyboard and Mouse implementation
Xbox controllers should get all the features from PlayStation like the haptic feedback, gyro and the mic.
I said this before and will say it again: XBox should open up controller support the same way steam does.
Add official support for Dual Shock 4, Dualsense and Switch Pro controllers! And allow developers to use features from those controllers.
I still will likely always prefer xbox controllers, but would be nice to have access to some features like gyro aiming in some games by simply syncing in a Switch Pro controller.
Unfortunately, the designers only thought about terraflops and forgot to improve other elements of the experience.
I genuinely find the series x controller very poor, with R2 getting stuck on glue lots of times, and a cheap nasty uncomfortable feel in the hands that makes it unpleasant to use.
The Forza controller feels much better though and doesn't have sticking triggers, so I just use two of them, but I feel they really dropped the ball on the controller this gen and using the Ps5 controller just confirms it for me.
No point in adding a feature part way through the life cycle, so this is one area the Xbox will be weaker in for the entire generation, and that's a lack of foresight...
@Medic_Alert
You are not alone and that's a perfectly valid view, but not one I share
I know I'm not not mad though as my wife wont even use a standard controller, and other friends I have who game, feel similar to myself.
If you feel no motion sensing and batteries is the future of gaming fair enough, but this news story clearly shows its not good enough to support a game system available everywhere else, and when the game is this popular and massive, then that IS an issue.
I'm also not alone in finding haptics compelling and a good addition, and the whole pad has superior functionality and options that Xbox controllers don't match. I use the forza controllers, but I'm always happier returning to the dualsense and therefore will never buy 3rd party game on Xbox - I might as well play using the tools I like to use, and I even use dual sense controllers on my PC.
Gyro is amazing and it's unbelievable that Nintendo supports not only gyro in their Joycons and pro controllers but the actual switch system tablet itself.
It boggles the mind that Microsoft are technically behind NINTENDO of all companies.
There really should be a Xbox Series S/X 2.0 controller with gyro included and get it added to every first and third person game asap.
its the only reason I tell friends the xbox series pad isn't the best on the market. it lacks gyro. if it had gyro, it'd flat out just be the best pad to use for most things.
@Nalverus Weird way of saying steam controller is the best.
LOL. OK. PS has that I suppose. It is terrible.
Love motions controls. Bring me all the waggle inputs.
No thanks.
Gyro controls annoyed the hell out of me playing Breath of the Wild trying to aim and then that crap kicked in and I had to steady the handheld.
It's either pure traditional controller or keyboard and mouse for me. There's no in-between.
The lack of Gyro controls on Xbox is why I'm terrible at shooting games. At least that's what I tell my friends when we play Fortnite
@Medic_Alert You're right, they did talk about the reduction in wireless lag during the release. I'd honestly forgotten about that. How much of an issue it was for previous generations is debatable, I currently use a mixture of Xbox Series and Xbox One pads (on both Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC) and I don't notice any difference between them.
I like the Xbox Series controller, it's my preferred controller for gaming on PC when not using a KB and Mouse. Things I like are being able to use rechargeable AA batteries, asymmetric stick layout and the D-Pad. It's also zero hassle and compatible with most PC games. But these are all pretty basic features when compared with the competition.
Summing it up, MS have a solid controller but it's not terribly innovative and somewhat boring. Aesthetically, it's also gotten more boring since the XBox One release.
I come from the Switch and it is a mystery to me why Xbox has no gyro. I really missed it while playing Halo Infinite.
@kingv84 I think Phi Spencer said that he is a fan of those features too so hopefully xbox will design them into a new controller someday.
Yeah, I don't care about Fortnite but I do care about gyro, and XBox not having it really is pretty antiquated.
I hope gyro catches on in the future more than it has so far, because it's simply a game changer.
I hope just like how Fortnite pressurized Sony into supporting crossplay, Fortnite pressurizes Microsoft into making a controller with gyro.
@Yanina @clvr @Grumblevolcano Yeah, I really, really expected the Series controller would have it. I can't understand why it doesn't. They can't "innovate" too far like Nintendo can in controls because cross-platform is their endgame, but gyros are pretty standard at this point, PC fully supports them on everything but MS controllers, and even phones have gyro (more reliably than buttons or sticks! So even touch control could use it.) There's really no explanation at all other than, maybe, power draw for AA batteries which would be a different trade-off. It was such an obvious feature now that every other platform has had it for 2 generations.
They DO have precedent for releasing new controllers though. The S replaced the Duke, there was that S version of the 360 controller that streamlined it more, and then the BT-enabled rerelease of the X1 controller, so it's totally possible they refresh controllers into the gen. They did sent that survey out right after launch about if you want Xbox to have Dual Sense features or something like that, though I imagine anything haptic will be an Elite v3, not a stock controller.
But it's still sloppy in a SixAxis sort of way if they have to re-release the controllers with gyro. Though, maybe they could have a clip-on attachment for it like the Wii Motion Plus/Xbox quick type thingie.
I've been a proponent of gyro since I first played Splatoon in 2015. Gyro would improve the already great Xbox controller, imo.
@JaxonH I see your name pop up a lot in comments / reviews for this xim tech controller. It looks exactly like what I'm looking for in my Xbox controller so I'm excited to try it out. I bought it from Amazon even though it costs $40 more, because I like their return policies better. Do you know if it works with games that do not have a config? I'm most excited to use it for Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini and Time Splitters. I'd play a lot more FPS games as well if the gyro is good. I really can't stand stick aiming, so I buy all my FPS on Switch which sucks because of the reduced performance but I'll take that over stick aiming.
@NotoriousWhiz
So. As for games without a config. Here's the deal.
Each game has its own internal analog settings behind the scenes. Acceleration curves, speed, sensitivity, etc. The XIM Nexus devs have to spend 24 hrs training the algorithm for each game, which then maps it to the translator to output perfect 1:1 like a mouse, which can then be used for gyro.
But because so many games already have configs that unscramble the curves to transform them into 1:1, most types of analog curves used by devs on the backend are covered. The trick is, finding the config from another game that feels right.
Thus far, I've been able to get most games that don't have a config playable, even if it's not quite perfect. There is also the occasional game that DOES have a config, but didn't work properly for me (Gears 5), in which case I had to use a config from a different game and tweak it a bit. You can copy any config and rename it, and you can copy the settings for each config and paste it into another. So what I'll do is, find another config that's close, then copy paste it as a new config and rename it, then tweak it as close to perfection as possible.
The controller only holds 20 configs in memory but the app has everything. You can swap out as needed any time. If you've tweaked a config though, save it's settings to a digital notepad on your phone before deleting, so you don't have to redo it if you ever redownload it to the controller again.
Also there's some tricks you'll need to learn. Like calibration. Change the 100% limit of the triggers to be lower, otherwise you gotta press a bit too hard to get it to activate for things that require full press. Also in each controller config, change the gyro to activate at 5% trigger press, and the 0% start of the analog trigger press to begin at 10%. That way gyro activates slightly before the trigger starts registering as a press, from 0-100%.
Watch all tutorial vids on YouTube, and play around with the settings until you get comfortable and know what everything does.
@JaxonH Nice. Thanks for all of the detailed information.
