Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the best Xbox games of 2021 in our opinion, but critically-acclaimed games don't always translate into great sales, and that's seemingly been the case for Square Enix's recent release.
In a recent Financial Results Briefing, the company explained that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy got off to a "slow start" in terms of sales despite strong reviews, which ultimately meant it "undershot our initial expectations".
"The HD Games sub-segment launched 'Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy' in Q3. Despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations."
However, Square Enix also noted that "sales initiatives" put in place from November 2021 onwards meant that the game's sales have been growing in recent months, and the company intends to keep working on these moving forward.
Disappointing news if you're a fan of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, then, as it seems like sales haven't been strong enough to encourage Square Enix to make a sequel — hopefully the game can shift a bunch more copies in 2022.
What are your thoughts on GOTG's slow start? Let us know down in the comments below.

Doubt they even realize that the reason for that is how bad the Avengers game they still have on life support is. I loved this game but I don't blame anyone for not buying it based on the previous usage of the IP.
Great game. If you read this and haven't bought it can be picked up at a steal at the moment.
didnt the say the same about avengers? and if so mayube just maube marvel universe is getting played out? disney is beating all their horses lately for content.
That's probably got to do with the bad rep they had gotten from the avengers game.
They also said this about Outriders. I can’t recall the last time they’ve been happy about anything.
That statement is quite loaded - undershot expectations. That doesn't mean it sold badly, just that it didn't sell as many copies as they had 'expected'.
If they expected to sell 10m copies purely based on the fact its a 'Marvel' licence for example and it 'only' sells 8m, that's undershot expectations (due to over ambitious projections??) but still a 'great' return. Others, seem 'happy' to sell 1m copies in the first couple of months but some Publishers seem to expect 'too' much - especially as they seem to go out of their way to ruin their reputation and 'trust' of their customer.
SE lost a lot of respect and trust after the Marvels Avengers Cash grab and of course talks of NFT's and wonder why Gamers are more 'cautious' with their money.
I think Game Pass too also will have a big impact on 'Sales' in general too - especially in the first few months of release. Why spend £60 on a game you don't have 'faith' in or trust the Publisher when you can play a LOT of 'great' games all competing for your valuable gaming time for a small monthly charge allowing you to play new games whilst you 'wait' for that game to drop in price to a point you are willing to pay.
Outstanding game with excellent graphics, strong storyline, great character progression, a funny combat system as you have to combine powers from all characters but in the bottom it was fun. Super fun. You wanted to play even more. The dialogue's structure was based to the general mood of the movie which was a nice turn. Shame if they don't consider a sequel.
Picked this up on a Microsoft Store sale sometime around Christmas - great game! I just finished it over the weekend and walked away satisfied - even if I did encounter one progress-breaking bug in the first level that required an entire restart and a strange cutscene bug at the end of the game that required I reload my previous checkpoint to restart said cutscene.
I think Avengers hurt this. That game was poorly conceived and I think people looked this as an extension of Avengers.
Really hope this means they'll get back to Deus Ex then.
@Blessed_Koz Disney and Marvel can continue to make everything they possibly can. There will never be too much Marvel or Disney ever. I am sorry that you feel like this and that something went so wrong in your life that you dont want all of the Marvel all of the time. The movies and shows they have been producing are absolutely fantastic and they should Never stop making them as there are so many more stories to explore!
Personally it was the Avengers game that killed any interest I had for this one. They has their hands on the biggest IP in the world, and everyone was clamouring for a AAA Marvel game, but they made a grindy and uninspired beat 'em up full of microtransactions.
I'm not surprised that people weren't champing at the bit for a second helping.
A truly great game. I appreciate well crafted competent games and this is a shining example of that.
It deserves good sales and a sequel, so I hope it does enough to justify one.
I just had a feeling that this game was going to be good and bought it a while ago. It’s only gotten better with time.
I skipped Avengers entirely learning it was going to be a open world wallet vacuum.
Loved the game myself, but my initial reaction upon was the games E3 announcement was 'meh', simply because The Avengers left a sour taste in my mouth and the marketing was poor.
I do hope they understand shipping a garbage Avengers game didn’t inspire much confidence, regardless what any reviews said.
Disappoint us as horribly as Avengers did, and month one sales of your next games will suffer dearly.
