Elden Ring has got off to an unbelievable start with critics, but if there's one criticism that's been directed at the game, it's from certain players - newcomers and veterans - who are finding it very difficult to get to grips with so far.
Speaking a few days ago, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki gave his thoughts on players who find his games too difficult, explaining that he feels "apologetic" towards those people, but they're all about "overcoming hardship".
Here's what he had to say in an interview with The New Yorker:
“I do feel apologetic toward anyone who feels there’s just too much to overcome in my games. I just want as many players as possible to experience the joy that comes from overcoming hardship.”
Despite the difficulty, Elden Ring has already comfortably established itself as the best game of 2022 so far according to Metacritic with a rating of 97 (for PS5), and it's going to be a huge task for anything to surpass that mark this year.
If, like many other players, you're having trouble navigating its tricky world and enemies, our sister site Push Square has put together an excellent set of Elden Ring guides with everything you need to help you get started.

That's the nicest "Git gud" I've ever heard. And I support it 100%.
That’s not what they should be apologizing for…
Wow, how nice, so does a network check passing count as overcoming hardship?
As great as this game sounds I hate Souls difficulty games. My game play time is limited and I don't want to be doing the same battle over and over just to prove some macho git gud ***** that I can play a game. Maybe if they introduce an adjustable difficulty level then maybe I will play it.
Gaming snobbery at its finest. Honestly I hope we have less and less people like this in the gaming industry.
The games are not even that hard honestly.
Once you beat your first one, the other ones are easier because of similarity.
People are just not used to taking seriously any enemy you see in a game. No one shot 5 enemies on their heads with a slow mo ability.
I haven't started the game, but I bet it won't be as hard as Sekiro. The guard bar makes it pretty clear it will be easier. I've seen videos. Doesn't look as hard as Sekiro.
@Tasuki
While I think most games have got to easy I do agree there could be a difficulty setting for those who would like one. Also the other side is these are hard games and if someone does not like that do not buy it. If the game fails to do well then maybe they put a difficulty slider in. Not ever game has to be easy.
@Tasuki But the game is as long as Horizon or Fallout 4. Why doesn't your limited time apply to those? Not saying you played those. Just examples.
Unless you like resident evil and ratchet lengths, I don't see how much more time the game ask you over other open world games.
@Medic_Alert Haven't started it. How are you feeling about it vs the other souls games? In general. Not just difficulty.
@RevGaming I love Soulsborne games but I can see where Tasuki is coming from on this. Those games may be just as long but the ability to pause when you want makes a big difference. Not to mention having to spend a ton of time to learn a new enemy type or boss makes it more demanding of a game. It’s less about the length of the game and more about how it demands your time. I do want to get this eventually but for now I’m sticking with Horizon, which I think perfectly demonstrates how it utilizes a player’s time versus a Soulsborne style game.
It's overcoming frustration not hardship.
@Odium So you're talking about sittings?
Do you really need over one hour to make some kind of progress in Souls games?
I don't see how Horizon respects my time more than Souls game. It took me 38 hours to beat and Elden Ring will be about the same and I haven't even done everything in hfw. An hour could be 1-2 side quests in HFW.
I guess if someone plays games on easy, I could see one person taking double on a souls game.
@Snake_V5 Well, people get frustrated when they lose a match vs a clan but they have the drive to beat them on the next game.
@Medic_Alert Nice. Sounds great. Somebody said it's Death of the Wild. I won't start it yet so maybe there's a patch before Friday.
Damn. 8.5 and I know that's probably your favorite exclusive from ps4 if I remember.

Elden Ring is my first Souls games and I'm finding it more accessible than what I expected.
The game is brutal but fair and due to the open world nature, if I get stuck, I can just wonder off elsewhere and level up, find new gear etc.
Took me about 15+ attempts to defeat Margit the Fell, but boy did it feel so satisfying when I beat him.
Difficultly options are a way getting people into to harder settings. I play on easier settings to familiarise myself with controls, mechanics, and maps before I play on harder settings.
The last time I played the hardest setting to start was Bound by Flame. Got my ass handed to me the entire game, got to the last boss, and stopped playing because the difficulty spike was just too much. I could gave completed it, but I wouldn't have had more fun. Just from finishing it.
Then there's just people who won't ever play at higher levels of play. I won't play on a pro's level, and none of my friends will ever play at my level, and that's OK. But to punish my friends for not being as good as me is the absolutely worst kind of gatekeeping, gut gud mentality.
I'm sure there will be a trainer for pc soon that will have cheats like infinite health & what not
I imagine a fromsoft "easy mode" would be elden ring, but without the bosses.
Also, who knew fromsoft and the whole soulsborne genre triggered some people. Wow.
I mean. Why does a creator have to apologize to people because they're not into this type of game.
I really doubt anybody from the last couple generations would be into any game from the 80s an 90s if they don't like FromSoft's games.
@Would_you_kindly probably not. Elden ring uses easy anti cheat. A first for a PC souls games. Mods an the like just aren't gonna happen. Cheats is inevitable but they would just get patched out.
@Nalverus well it was cracked day one so I would've assumed it wouldn't be too difficult but I don't know anything about anti cheat
I am not great at souls games but I love them. Elden ring so far to me is my favorite. I love a good challenge. It's a shout out to the old days of gaming. I think people have gotten soft. How many people cried about how hard MegaMan and Castlevania was. I still never beat the old ones. But try once in a while. By the way I am not a teen soulsplayer. I am a grown man with a full time job
@blinx01 wait to you get to godrick. Took a lot of tries to beat him. At least check points are closer to boss fights now
@Would_you_kindly aha, thats a little different. that basically means people can pirate it an yeah, people could make cheats an run it on that. Not going to go into detail about that here.
but it doesn't mean those cheats are gonna get far on the untouched build on steam.
@Tasuki Thank you! This is exactly what i want. I want to be able to play these games, but at my own pace and not hours on a single battle, or the same battle over and over again just to show that i can actually do it. And no offense to the creator, they are making a game the love and want people to enjoy based on their own interests. But personally, i would prefer a big boss game like this with an adjustable difficulty scale so i can play it how I want to play it. But oh well, these games are made for a certain crowd and that just means i wont be playing it. It's unfortunate for me and me alone.
It is a starting to get a little comical how this comes up every single time a Fromsoft game comes out. They have been making their games challenging for over a decade at this point. It's simply part of their DNA like how Naughty Dog and Ninja Theory are known for having very cinematic experiences in their games or how HazeLight games require coop to play. All are perfectly valid ways to approach game design!
It's the developer's game. Let them make it however they want. Simple. How many more games does Miyazaki need to direct before people understand this is just the way his games are? It's like being upset Hideo Kojima's next game will have cutscenes in it.😂
Sorry but I don't think gaming should be about overcoming hardships, I think we got enough of that IRL, video games are supposed to offer an escape.
@RevGaming it all depends on the area, the enemy, the boss, so on and so forth. If I’m dying repeatedly on one boss and having to force my way back to it every time, then it’s a little more time consuming than doing a side quest or two in a game like Horizon. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the Soulsborne genre but for me personally, I don’t feel progress is as easy or as forgiving of your time as some of the things in other games.
@Medic_Alert I can completely see your point on that. I’ve never been a person that shoots for 100% of a game. I’ll do most side quests and check out points of interest, but if I get a quest that doesn’t interest me I won’t bother. Now, with that said, it is far more satisfying to finally get through a boss or point you’ve been stuck on for a while in a Soulsborne game than just about anything Horizon has to throw at me, so from that perspective I can completely agree with your point.
@Odium
All I am saying if you can't beat a boss under an hour, go grind and come and try again. I am guessing since it's open world you will probably have to tackle everything else and then proceed to the main story boss.
There has to he some bosses that you beat on first try.
And here we go again. Every time a Fromsoft game releases this discussion happens. Can't people just accept that not every game is for everyone? It caters to a specific audience just as every game does.
Miyazaki owes nobody any apologies.
@RevGaming I hear what you’re saying, and I don’t necessarily disagree, but that also kind of goes along with my point that it can be tougher to make progress if someone has to stop trying against a boss to grind.
Shouldn't apologize at all. If the game doesn't click with somebody that's fine, that person can go find something else to play. These type of games are for a specific audience but they continue to be made and generally sell well. Must be doing something right. The moaning about lack of difficulty options is pathetic at this point.
@Odium What about open worlds? Sometimes you get access to higher level quests but you go and do the lower ones so you level up?
I get the point. Seems like you're seeing less content because of it.
That's the sound of an elitst to me..
@Bmartin001 he shouldn't be sorry. That's like saying Kojima should stop making cutscenes because you don't cutscenes. There are hundreds of games made for each one of us.
@RevGaming I was about to say that’s different because I can leave the area and come back later, but clearly that’s your point in all of this. So I’ll say for typical Soulsborne games that wasn’t really an option because you can’t progress without defeating the enemy, but in Elden Ring I 100% conceded to this point, there’s always something to do so it does work with the allotted game time I have better than typical games in the genre.
@Odium If I knew the enemies in the area are giving a lot of souls (because some people may skip enemies and get to the boss fight without leveling up enough) I would fight a few to level up. Maybe that's an issue people have with the game too. I am thinking some may want to beat the first main boss without beating the other open world bosses.
@RevGaming I definitely know people who just try to rush to bosses and find that’s a big mistake. I am in no way good enough to just streamline it and not level up first. I’ll never be that guy beating it with a Guitar Hero guitar, blind folded and not leveling up once, while managing a perfect run. 🤣
Lol I'm sorry......but the next game will be 10x harder.
No apologies needed really, these games are hard as usual. They're not for me, but not every game is. They're in a weird place, because by now they see that people are becoming more and more curious about these games, but they also know that if they introduced an easier option, the whining would be heard from space. It is what it is really, can't please everyone, these games will never be for all gamers, and thats fine.
If a developer wants to make their game hard with no option for a lower difficulty then that's ok, it's their game. But they need to make sure the game is as balanced and as fair as possible, that simple.
If a game is difficult but fair I'll be determined as hell to get through it no matter how many times i die. But if i keep dying due to some unfair garbage cough*ninjagaiden3razorsedge finalboss*cough then there's no fun or enjoyment in trying to overcome it.
@Soulsplayer84
I haven't even attempted that yet.
Currently lvl 25 and just exploring and trying to enhance my weapons and shield atm!
Hahaha i remember playing souls game when it first game out, and died many many times 🙄
Was too hard for me, even tho i like a challenge lol
Isnt this game coop?
@Tasuki I just wanted to say that this game is way more flexible and forgiving than the previous Souls entries.
I was getting super frustrated with Dark Souls 3 as being stuck on a boss feels like you need to get through a brick wall or endlessly grind the same mobs for a few hours.
With Elden Ring, you can just head off elsewhere to explore and gain some levels and weapons. It got to the stage where I was afraid of heading to fight Margit but I ended up really over-levelled for the fight and he melted to my spells .
I'm not trying to convince you one way or the other but I just wanted to give my two cents as someone who also found souls games a bit impenetrable in the past.
Not everyone has the same level of skill or ability, and so everyone's "hardship" is different than the other. That's why difficulty modes and accessibility options exist to allow you to dial in the challenge to suit each player's abilities.
This is a legitimate criticism that's been levied at their games for years now, and there's no excuse to have not made some efforts to address it considering it's not some indie developer, and would make the games unambiguously better, and improve sales.
Its definitely legitimate to criticise From as their games are not adhering to any accessibility options, and they are setting difficulty on the basis of a 'standard player'. Everyone is different and the more enlightened devs are making their games with options to help most people access it - except From.
The fact is some of us games players are now moving on in years, and though I still play everything, my reaction times are slowing and that makes it more difficult for someone like me to overcome the hardship as my tired old reactions simply cant react fast enough to trigger the block/roll etc.
I don't see that having a more accessible option that would allow more people to play would compromise anything. If people that don't need it use it and spoil their enjoyment then that's on them.
i have played dark souls 1 and 2 demon souls if they want hard games, elden ring his the easiest of the series all point intended i cannot understand oh its too hard mouahhh 😢 it's too easy both side don't get it, elden ring is the simplest not easy just more simple still challenging as f.... 😊👌
@Tasuki is not some git gud bull, it's the feeling of accomplishment from doing what you deemed impossible hours earlier. Its teaming up with others in the same area to turn the boss battle around so you can spank them instead. It's going from a lowly tarnished warrior to the strongest force in the land. Git gud means alot of things but in this case it's a thing of self improvement, of self realization, learning from mistakes and growing. Also someone will invade, kill you, teabag your body and message you to git gud. That's just a rite of passage.
Souls games, without difficulty would be empty, repetitive, and too short. They would be one dimensional and pointless . They're not story based, they are designed to be like old school platform games. Dying is a part of learning the level, its not a punishment. From Soft would never allow their game to look stupid for the sake of an easy option, even if some players were ok with it . And after all,it is what it is. Those Japanese creators , are about the honour ,not the money. Thats why the game is 97 in critics and 67 in general public. Because there are people who get it, and people who 'll never understand why they missed on another masterpiece
@PhileasFragg What if they dont want to improve sales, but want to improve their art? Not everything is McDonalds, vanilla or easy listening. Besides, they do want more people to enjoy the game, FOR WHAT IT IS
@Hidetaka Accessibility doesn't diminish their "art". Plus I'm pretty sure they do want to improve sales.
