This past weekend, we shared the story that PlatinumGames' Hideki Kamiya was still keen to team up with Xbox after the cancellation of Scalebound back in 2017, and now thanks to a new interview with IGN Japan (translated by VGC), the company has once again suggested it would like to revisit the project — ideally with Microsoft.
In the interview, Platinum President Atsushi Inaba explained that Kamiya "has always wanted to do Scalebound", and the team would like "a proper discussion with Microsoft" about it. Kamiya had the following to say:
“We did a lot of work on it, and it’s no use Microsoft keeping the game in its current form, so we’d like to do something about it (laughs). Phil! Let’s do it together!”
There's a bit of debate about the exact translation of his comments — here's another interpretation:
This isn't the first time PlatinumGames has shown interest in bringing back Scalebound, telling players to 'send Phil Spencer a letter' if they wanted to see it back in 2020, which led to a passionate response from fans on social media.
However, Kamiya also made a point of apologising to the fans and Microsoft last year for Scalebound's cancellation, explaining that "we weren’t experienced enough and couldn’t get over that wall, leading to what happened in the end."

If Microsoft aren't interested then just give the ip to platinum games so they can do it themselves and make it multi platform
Omg he's doing a Zack Snyder , let's get the world to get Microsoft to employ me
Please Microsoft let me have more of your money
He seems desperate lol.
"Buy me buy me buy me!"
I still have interest in the game. If they bring it out I'd definitely give it a try.
Sounds like a plan.
-Ms needs games for gamepass.
-Gamepass needs more Japanese games to appeal there.
-it'd be decent PR
I think Platinum must be desperate for money.
In the past, they were silent and made Xbox look like the bad guys for cancelling Scalebound, and now, all of a sudden, they are doing some serious ass kissing. lol
I would rather MS pursues the "Dragons" game IO was rumoured to be working with/under XGS partnership. While I really like PG they appeared to be extremely unprofessional regarding the development of Scalebound, for goodness sake they developed a timed exclusive for Sony (Nier Automata) instead of developing the game they were paid for.
Who cares about the why... All that matters is that this game looked amazing and needs to become a reality again. Microsoft should definitely put money into this game to finish it and it should be an Xbox Series X exclusive!
@UltimateOtaku91
No. What MS should do is to give the IP to Ninja Theory once they have done with Senua, it makes sense to develop in house rather than sink more money in PG so they can develop other projects like it happened with Nier Automata (I know it was Taro, but still).
Something here is smelling fishy. I am going to start a conspiracy theory based on absolutely no facts. Companies don't like other companies negotiating in public. It is obvious that the relationship is still good between Platinum and Microsoft. Maybe they are already working on Scalebound, or even maybe, MS is working on buying Platinum Games.
I'd like to see Scalebound resurrected with the 'Series X' as the lead platform to overcome some of the 'issues' of making that 'ambitious' project with a lot more capable hardware.
MS would already have a lot of 'investment' in that project that is either 'wasted' with little/no chance of recuperating anything back or 'worth' investing more into it now for Game Pass. If they can 'resurrect' that project, its going to be more 'short term' investment (however much time and therefore additional investment) and then they get some 'payoff' by bringing that game to Xbox/PC and of course Game Pass.
The issue before of 'further' investment into an already costly project with 'poor' Console sales as the XB1 was 'struggling' and failing confidence in the IP would lead any Publisher to conclude its 'best' to cut your losses now than keep ploughing money in to a game that would never sell anywhere near enough to cover that - that's the entire 'Sales' model.
However, that extra money invested now to bring back Scalebound would give MS another 'big' IP coming Day 1 to Game Pass and 25m+ players paying their monthly Subs to at least 'try' it at no extra cost. If it sells on Xbox/PC too to those that don't subscribe, bonus - but its another 'big game' in Game Pass to 'keep' Subscribers happy and subscribed, its one less month to try and have a big release for - those 25m+ subscribers that paid to have a 'big game' and all the other releases will be 'happy'.
MS, with more 'talent' amongst its studio's too, are also better positioned to provide more 'assistance' and 'expertise' to help Platinum too.
In my eyes, its a 'win/win' situation for both MS and Platinum. Platinum get to finish a game they were obviously passionate about and MS get another 'big' game made and released 'exclusively' to Game Pass platforms. Phil was disappointed he had to 'cancel' and knows it disappointed a LOT of people so its good PR to be able to announce that they have again partnered to bring back Scalebound!! What a way to say you are NOT the same Company they were too...
Some talks may already be underway and being more 'public' may help gauge public 'support' for Scalebound. If enough people are talking positively about hopefully seeing Scalebound again, it becomes a lot easier a discussion. MS would then know the public want it, Platinum want to Finish it and has much more resources in talent/expertise to help too.. #SaveScalebound LOL
It looked like a promising game and Platinum rocks. Please bring it?
Can Sony just please buy Platinum to put them out of their misery at this point? They're starting to look so desperate I feel bad for them.
I love plantinum games. Bayonetta, astral chains, nier, wonderful 101 are all great games and franchises but they seem to have mismanagement issues. So many delays on their product. I’d love for them not to have to work so heavily with publishers and make cross platform games. I don’t think their games are huge system sellers but they are great games and cover a great niche.
If I was Microsoft I wouldn't fund their project again because they messed it up and blamed Microsoft until recently but I'd ask if they want to become an Xbox Game Studio and then we'll talk about Scalebound.
If scalebound was to happen I would honestly want to it to be made by any other studio than Platinum. I don't don't think it will ever release tho.
I too want PlatinumGames and Microsoft to revisit Scalebound. When I bought my Xbox One S, that was THE game I wanted the most. Was so gutted when it was cancelled.
