I buy about the same amount of games, most of them on Xbox actually. Kinda convenient to have the gamepass titles + all my big third party and indie purchases in one place, though i'll sometimes double dip indies on Switch.
I pretty much only buy exclusives on Switch and PS5 other than that.
@GodofCapcom The point that it's AAA or nothing for you?
Yup, and i've made mine, that Sony has abandoned the stuff I care about.
We aren't going to change each other's minds I can see, but understand that for some, what you and others demand of Xbox is not what some people with Xbox want. Less crap like Last of Us, more stuff like Hi-Fi Rush.
@GodofCapcom And I have little to no interest in Starfield, Halo, Gears and Forza the same way I have no interest in God of War, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us. Yet Xbox is still finding ways to put out games I care about. Japan Studios, the best part that Sony had is effectively dead but the Summer of Arcade still lives.
Thing is, every single game Sony makes does not need to break bank and be some big AAA game. They don't all need to be multi-million dollar epics, there's room for smaller games in there. They had a balance with this stuff before Jim Ryan came in and doubled down on one thing while jettisoning the other. Both can exist, and both Xbox and Nintendo find ways to do that. Sony does not, at least not anymore. And honestly it's why those kinds of games are starting to flock more and more to Switch than anything else, which is probably for the best.
@GodofCapcom A game doesn't need to be a million seller to justify its existence. A sensibly made game with no crunch and a ballooned budget can recoup its cost without selling millions. It's when you only try to make the biggest, most expensive games that it needs to sell millions which is WHY they are basic and very market tested without much identity or passion in it.
I consider people that swear by AAA and only AAA to be basic, yes. It's the equivalent of the Marvel/summer blockbuster crowd in movies that won't explore other areas in film. They're the most marketed, most known, and most easily digestible for a common audience. Basic. That's the realm the likes of God of War and Last of Us occupy.
Indies for the most part do get more experimental. You won't see a game telling the story that Pentiment does on a large scale.
And really, boiling all 2D sidescrollers down to the same genre? There's straightforward platformers, puzzle games, metroidvanias, beat 'em ups, survival horror, etc that are 2D sidescrollers and far from the same thing.
AAA games almost all run together to me and are far from innovative in my eyes either, the eyes that can't use VR so that's a non-point for me and another way Sony is turning me away. Have fun with it though I guess, I much prefer the path Xbox is taking right now than Playstation so i'll stick with my truth.
@GodofCapcom I don't see how variety would make Sony shut down, and comparing Hollow Knight to Mario Bros is laughable considering they aren't even the same genre. I don't care about the risk factor, i'm a consumer that was a fan of games like Ape Escape, Puppeteer, and Gravity Rush, they didn't set the world on fire for your basic b**** gamer that just wants to consume the big stuff God of War and Last of Us, but they also weren't as big a budget risk either. Sony decided to go all in on their AAA audience that doesn't care to dig beneath the surface and find the actual interesting games, and leave everyone else behind, and that has alienated a part of their audience, even if it's a smaller part.
Pentiment tells a better story than anything first party Playstation has ever put out, not least of all their bland ass 'zombies but it's fungi' series for the Walking Dead crowd out there.
Returnal is the one good game on PS5 i'll grant you, that seems like a fluke more than anything. It decided to be a fun game instead of a style of substance bloated slog fest with a standardized checklist of objectives.
@GodofCapcom Hey, Sony is ****ing the bed on making the smaller quirky experiences I want, which they used to be good at. Xbox leaning into AA and smaller projects at least fills the niche for those of us that Sony left in the dust. Go play your cookie cutter AAA open world game on Playstation if that's what you want, it's all they ever make anymore.
The Metroid Prime remaster that dropped out of nowhere, the Dead Space remake that did not drop out of nowhere, and between those being my big games, I’ll also be playing Dead Cells and Castlevania Rondo of Blood. Getting unreasonably hyped for Dead Cells Return to Castlevania next month, and I don’t know if that’s my love for both Dead Cells and Castlevania, or just my sheer desperation for a new Castlevania game period.
@FatalBubbles I couldn't disagree more. I think when the parry is introduced is when the combat really opens up, and it's an absolutely vital mechanic that they want to drill into you, so they will make sure you learn it before allowing you to move on. These kinds of games demanding skill of the player should be the norm if you ask me, and i'm glad we're still getting ones like these.
I guarantee the only thing that can dethrone Hi-Fi Rush for me is Silksong.
It’s games like these that remind me why I fell in love with games in the first place, after getting worn down with all these propped up AAA self important slog fests. Hope Xbox keeps leaning into these kinds of games.
Things are just going to get uglier from here on the macro scale of the bickering of mega corps trying to close the deal/stop or get concessions on the deal, government regulators with all the amazing speed of a snail stuck in molasses, and the micro scale of console war fanboys who will draw their own conclusions based on their favorite box.
Post game Hi-Fi Rush, that game continues to be an absolute delight and might be my favorite first party Xbox game since Killer Instinct 2013, but I’m also getting back into Dead Cells since I haven’t really played it since the first DLC, and that Castlevania DLC is coming up. Man…they added a lot to this game since I played last. The other indie character weapons are great!
Might dabble around with Valkyrie Profile Lenneth on PS5 as well.
I agree with him. It’s at least better than both Evil Within games, as much as I enjoyed Evil Within 2. I do still need to give Ghostwire Tokyo a go though.
This feels like a lost 6th generation classic in all the best ways. It transports me back to playing games like Viewtiful Joe, God Hand and Gitaroo Man as a kid. They seldom make them like this anymore.
Damn right it’s a 10 to me, and glad to see I’m not alone on that, cheers to Tango Game Works!
I genuinely don’t think I’ve had this much fun with a character action game in about a decade. Wonderful 101 was the last time. 9 is respectable and understandable.
Hi-Fi Rush just kinda came out of nowhere, showed me a game that'd jump right to the top of my most wanted list right next to Silksong if it made me wait, but then decided it'd release that day.
Hi-Fi Rush is a real feather in the cap for Xbox. And it REALLY makes me curious what other AA type passion projects are in the works by other developers.
Yeah, this is a fantastic game. This was a straight injection shot of a video game-ass video game that Xbox just gave us. Cannot wait to see what else they’re cooking.
Finished the first boss. This game is fun as hell, very charming and slick, and very accessible for even me, a person with terrible rhythm.
These are the titles I like seeing from Xbox. This gives me heavy vibes of an exclusive they'd have had for the original Xbox, and I mean that as VERY high praise. Between this and Pentiment, I am very, very excited to see what their other developers are cooking, because these passion projects from small teams have been the best thing from Xbox these past few years.
Double Fine ESPECIALLY has my interest, just what are they up to? And will it shadow drop 👀
@Somebody It’s a pleasant surprise. I’m down for more middle road, budget conscious AA games over the resource and crunch intensive AAA games that use cookie cutter mechanics to appeal to the most basic b**** gamer and recoup costs.
Honestly it’s the indies that bring me to gamepass. 90% of AAA games are bland, bloated and bloated with uninspired gameplay because they focused on being as pretty and profitable as possible.
Will definitely buy the inevitable physical collector’s edition of this. I don’t engage with that BS for most games, but I need the physical PS5 CE to go next to my PS4 CE and boxed PC copy of the first game.
The case of Microsoft and ABK vs The Federal Trade Commission is one of my most anticipated Xbox releases this year. The lore drops on the Microsoft and Sony factions are going to be nuts.
It isn't like this game breaks bank either honestly. Nice to see them commit to providing value and quality, but I don't think they even needed to justify it considering it costs less than 10 bucks right now to own everything out for the game so far.

Could be cool. We’ll see.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 18-19)
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line on Switch, Like A Dragon Ishin on Xbox, Castlevania SOTN on PS5 in anticipation for Dead Cells DLC.
Re: Review: Like A Dragon: Ishin! - This Slick Remaster Serves Up Another Excellent Yakuza Adventure
One of my big tentpole games this year, gonna get going on it later today, glad to see it getting good reviews!
Condolences to the 100% crowd on Like A Dragon games, I can't live that life.
Re: Xbox Game Pass Launches Enable 'Secure Success', Says Indie Publisher
@NEStalgia I’m convinced they’re either ponies or the basic b****es that say indies don’t count as real games.

Re: Pick One: What Was Your Favourite Xbox Game Pass Game In January?
Hi-Fi Rush by a comically large margin. Potential GOTY for me, would wager only Silksong stands a chance of toppling it.

Hi-Fi Rush stole the show, my heart, and my time away from the other games I had planned to be playing instead.

Hi-Fi Rush and One Piece Odyssey for me.

Re: Poll: What Will Be Xbox 'Game Of The Year' In 2023?
Hornet's Pharloom Adventures.
Seldomly known as Hollow Knight Silksong.
It will trounce Zelda. It will trounce Spider-Man. It will trounce Starfield. And it will do so with ease.
That is my faith in this game.
