It's time for another round of Pick One! With January in the books, we're looking back at a slightly bizarre month for Xbox Game Pass, but one that ultimately ended up turning into some of the best few weeks we've seen in quite a while.
The service only treated us to two games between January 1st and January 18th in the form of Stranded Deep and Mortal Shell: Enhanced Edition, but these were then followed up with some of the absolute best games on Xbox Game Pass to date including Persona 3 and Persona 4, Monster Hunter Rise, Hi-Fi RUSH, GoldenEye 007, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition (for consoles) and much more!
So, what was the best Game Pass addition in January? Remember you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at what we're working with:

Don't have Game Pass, but I voted Hi-Fi Rush. Bought and loving it, so far.
Hi fi rush only for me, the others didn’t interest me this month.
Hi-Fi Rush was great, Monster Hunter too (but I've played through that elsewhere). Everything else, I wouldn't have been bothered even if they skipped GP.
Genuinely ridiculously difficult to choose. I'm not even interested in half the games and the other half are corkers. Hi Fi Rush, GoldenEye, age of Empires. All class
Hi-Fi Rush and Goldeneye, by all intents and purposes, feel equally outstanding for me.
Hi-Fi Rush by a comically large margin. Potential GOTY for me, would wager only Silksong stands a chance of toppling it.
None of them really. I know that Hi-Fi looks and plays great, I tried it, but beside God Of War (because of its exceptional production value) most of these games with chain combo fighting systems bore me because I find no enjoyment in that kind of combat. Still a great addition to gamepass for sure
AOE2. I've played thousands of hours over the years but the console controls are so good that I'm loving it all over again.
It would be Goldeneye 007 if it wasn't for Code Mystics' poor emulation.
AoE 2 for me. Still learning the controls, but they’ve done a stellar job converting to the Xbox controller. I can see myself sinking many hours into this game 🙂 I tried Hi-fi rush, but I’m not really into rhythm action games so it didn’t click with me. Nice graphics though.
I wish I could honestly answer, through Jan I spent it playing Castlevania Advance collection at the start of the month, Plague Tale Requiem and now stuck on Skyrim (and for some dumb reason aiming to get all achievements)
Interest wise, HiFi Rush > Persona 4 > Age of Empires 2 (just for a spin, I’ll definitely not play that with any intention to beat it.)
Easy, Hifi Rush.
Easiest poll ever.
Hi-Fi Rush has been my favorite Xbox exclusive since Sunset Overdrive, which says a lot.
Pretty decent month if you ask me. Haven't even had a chance to get to P4G yet.
Hi Fi because I beat it in a few days. Monster Hunter rise because I already have 18 hours in it. The amount of hours of content in January is really high. Persona 3-4 is dozens of hours. Monster Hunter is dozens of hours. AOE2 is also dozens of hours.
Only Hi-Fi RUSH 💚👌
How the heck is an ancient N64 shooter stomping 2 personas and the best monster hunter ever??
AOE2 finally on a console.
Hi-Fi Rush and Goldeneye were the highlights for me. Monster Hunter Rise isn’t my favorite genre, but is a fun game.
Hi-Fi is already in my personal top 10 games.
Goldeneye has so much jank and yet I've finished 8 levels on 00 Agent and plan to keep going, so I voted for Goldeneye. I've already played Monster hunter rise on the Switch and p4g on vita, but those are also phenomenal games as well. Haven't tried the hi rush game yet, but I have downloaded it, so I'll probably get to it after I finish goldeneye.
and xbox players wonder why Japanese games etc dont arrive on the console.
At least we can all agree that January alone was better than the entire 2022.
@NEStalgia Because not only has Goldeneye been talked up for years now, and James Bond is mainstream as hell, but both Monster Hunter and Persona are very niche titles and much more popular in Japan compared to the west.
@Korsica_Is_Best_Girl MH really broke out of Japan heavily with World, and Persona has been more popular in the west than Japan largely. Nice to the mainstream but not so much to people that hang out on video game sites.
But golden eye is literally a 25 year old N64 game! Master Chiefs helmet is made up of more polygons than that entire game 😂
goldeneye! age of empires a close second.
@NEStalgia I mean sure, but you also have to realize people have been playing P4G on PC for a couple years now, MH:Rise on the Switch for about a year(Or is it 2?), and Persona 3 FES was atleast on the PS3 store.
Meanwhile Goldeneye hasn't been on a modern console since I believe.
Goldeneye. Finished it on 00 agent, only aztec/egyptian left to complete. Got all the speedrun cheats done aswell so far. Facility took a while due to bad rng and archives was surprisingly easier than I remembered.
Amazingly, Hi -Fi rush….even when my two favorites franchises of all time are in the lineup (persona and Monster Hunter) but Hi-fi rush is the best new IP from ANY developer in a looong time
Finally caught up with Persona 4 Golden, super game!
@Korsica_Is_Best_Girl Ok, but seriously.... Literally any other game should be beating an ancient N64 game. It's truly ancient. The implication here is NSO is better than Game Pass lol.
@NEStalgia I don't quite know how you can say NSO is better than Game Pass because people want to play a older game. It may be ancient, but it's still consider one of the most innovative games ever created. Also it's not like Golden Eye is beating new games, in fact the one new game(Hi Fi Rush) has quite a sizeable lead over everything else.
I will certainly never understand the Internet obsession with Goldeneye. I get that it was very ahead of it's time in it's own time, but that time was a long long time ago, and while for the time it was very innovaltive, it's just sooo archaic now.
Also archaic but not quite as archaic the old No One Lives Forever series captures the "bond" feel better imo. Sadly not available on newer consoles, but I wonder if MS will end up owning it. I think Sierra did, and Activision bought Sierra... Wonder where that IP sits
I'm looking forward to IOIs Bond game, mind, but....90s shooters really don't age well...
Im enjoying hifi rush, but not buying into the hyperbole behind it.
Its a pretty basic game that becomes less inventive after 3 or 4 levels, but its fun, looks pretty and has been made with care.
Ive never understood why people were crying out for goldeneye. It feels every bit like the 26 year old n64 game it is and its interest for me is historic only.
I tried rise, but again, this felt seriously last gen and I think world is a better title. Not for me.
They have done an excellent job with the interface on AoE, but this would stil play better on a pc and its another game thats over 20 years old?
HiFi is my choice as it bright and fresh and the only title that can pass as next gen.
Hi-fi rush, persona 4 golden, golden eye, and monhun rise for me
I want to put Age of empire 2 but I can't play it on my pc after installing it, it said the game detect tampering although I didn't tamper the game and disable my antivirus software.
