With 2022 behind us we can start looking ahead at what is set to be a huge year for gaming. We have some incredibly hyped third-party games scheduled for this year, alongside a slew of Xbox exclusives that should finally see the light of day in 2023.
Last year, the first few months brought us some of 2022's biggest games, including FromSoftware's hugely popular Elden Ring, Techland's much awaited Dying Light 2 and more. That's got us thinking - could we be playing some Game of the Year contenders in just a few short weeks?
February and March, as of right now, are absolutely packed. Hogwarts Legacy, Atomic Heart, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Resident Evil 4 Remake are all launching before April, not to mention Xbox's trio of "first half of 2023" games (Forza Motorsport included) that could all release before July. Then, there's the latter part of the year, which we know very little about just yet. All in all, it's safe to say we're in for a busy year ahead!
So, which of these 2023 titles do you think could actually win Game of the Year? Of course, we're talking Xbox games here, and we're also sticking with a list of major titles confirmed for 2023. Starfield will surely be in the conversation, but as for the rest, it'll be interesting to see!
Which of these will be in with a shout for GOTY 2023? Vote in the poll and let us know if we've missed your pick!

How are people supposed to say if they haven't actually played a game. You're only setting yourself up for disappointment when games don't live up to unreasonable expectations.
All I care about is that Microsoft actually gets some decent first party games out as that would be a start. No more excuses.
@Cyberpsycho It's just a bit of fun
If it ain't Starfield something has gone horribly wrong...
or something else has gone horribly right
@FraserG I know but seems weird to ask people when they haven't actually played the games. That doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to some games but I no longer get hyped knowing how badly games can turn out.
No guarantee that these games won't get delayed into next year, hopefully Microsoft can finally deliver. It's the last chance for me fed up with being let down.
If Bethesda get starfield right on release then I think that will be up for nomination, along with hogwarts legacy and diablo 4. Personally though im hoping suicide squad ends up being the surprise of the bunch.
I can't see it being anything other than Starfield for me. I'm ready for another Bethesda masterpiece.
But I am also really looking forward to redfall, hogwarts legacy, alan wake 2, and RE4.
I don't think I'm gonna vote - tbh it'd be nice just getting to Christmas and being able count the games released on more than one hand 😄
@Cyberpsycho Its a 'predictions' for 2023 essentially - just a bit of fun to 'predict' what you think may well be the Xbox game of the year for 2023.
Any game that I can play on Playstation specifically, I don't tend to think of as an 'Xbox' game, they would compete for my 'overall' Game of the Year, just like I wouldn't count them in a Playstation Game of the Year. When I hear 'Xbox' or Playstation in this context, I think more of them as a Publisher and only count their own or 3rd Party partner exclusives.
So I think Starfield will be Xbox Game of the Year based purely on what I know 'now' which excludes many Xbox games as I don't know if they will release in 2023 - even if there is a 'strong' likelihood of release so Hellblade 2 for example isn't in my thoughts yet.
I don't know yet if Starfield would be my 'overall' Game of the Year, there are a LOT of games coming this year and so I do expect it to be a more difficult choice than 2022's GotY. I expect Forza to take best Racing/sports game, Redfall could surprise and win some awards too - maybe not the GotY, but maybe some other category. I do think MS will get more nominations in more categories this year.
For Xbox, probably Starfield.
Overall, probably Tears of the Kingdom. I usually don't go to sites and say stuff like this so I mean no offense, but that's my opinion.
What an embarrassment of riches! I don’t care who wins…it’s gonna be a great year for gaming 🙂
Redfall is my game of the year
@ironcrow86 How about counting the games released since E3 2021 and/or expected before E3 2023 - a '2 year' period.
You have MSFS, Psychonauts 2, Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Deathloop, Ghostwire Protocol, Grounded, Pentiment, Forza Motorsport, Age of Empires 4, Redfall, Starfield and Minecraft Legends. I know that some were not playable on Xbox Consoles day and date for 'reasons' but they are all MS owned IP's.
That's just 'new' games, not including any new content for 'older' games like Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76, ESO etc - any 'ports' to Series S/X to give you 'native' console versions - AoE 2 and 4 as well as Goldeneye could come in the next few months to increase that 'output'.
By my calculations, MS have 'released' or will release more than 12 games over the 2yr period from E3 2021 to E3 2023, which equates to an average of over 6 a year.
However, if you want to look back at the year leading up to Christmas 2022, you have Ghostwire Tokyo, Deathloop (Xbox version), AoE4 (currently PC only), Pentiment and Grounded (without counting FH5 Hot Wheels for example). Maybe not as 'exciting' as GT7, H:FW and GoW:R but still at least a 'hands' worth to count up...
Sony's are 'bumped' up with more 3rd Party exclusives - like Ghostwire and Deathloop as well as FF, Forspoken etc, and of course those 'ports' of older games to newer hardware and/or PC like Last of Us, Spider-Man, Uncharted etc but I can't think of any 'new' Sony made games released since E3 2021 other than the 3 I mentioned above (GT7, H:FW, GoW:R) compared to over 12 I can think of that MS released. I could be 'wrong' and missed something, but just because MS's games are not all exclusive and/or not all released (yet) on their own console, doesn't mean they haven't released anything...
For me, it's gonna be Hogwarts Legacy. For most of the internet, probably REmake 4 or Starfield.
Voted for REmake 4. It’s just such a safe bet it’ll be a 9/10 or better. I’d like to say Starfield or Hogwarts, but I just don’t know. It’s hard to tell right now what will hit or not.
@BAMozzy i was actually just referring to the massive amount of delays due to lockdown 🙂
Shouldn't we be seeing what games actually manage to release in 2023 before voting on the GotY?
I mean, based on the practicality of this poll, my vote is for Balan Wonderworld 2. Assuming Naka-san gets out on parole by year's end.
It's really hard to look past Starfield when you see Skyrim being played still to this day. It doesn't have to be for everyone but it's definitely going to be for a lot of folks.
@Berserker7 Looking better every time we see it.
Probably starfield, but other than that, I'd say RE4R. It's already a nearly perfect game, so it has that as an advantage. Silksong will be up there, along with forza.
@Cyberpsycho It's just a predictions poll done for fun and to share anticipation for upcoming games. No need to take it so seriously. Try having fun some time.
I don't see the hype in Starfield myself. I'm more looking forward to Stalker 2. I loved the first game back in the day and have some very fond memories of playing it with my friends.
Hornet's Pharloom Adventures.
Seldomly known as Hollow Knight Silksong.
It will trounce Zelda. It will trounce Spider-Man. It will trounce Starfield. And it will do so with ease.
That is my faith in this game.
I think Silksong has the best chance out of the stuff coming to Xbox.
Starfield would be my guess but i have a question. Is all those games set to release this year, Is Remedy doing Alan Wake 2 ?
@Nightcrawler71 exactly
I voted with some bias and went Diablo 4, i love the series and don’t believe 1-3 have any issues with being called the best action RPG of their respected times. Obviously it should be Starfield, but…. What if Hellblade 2 comes out in the fall? Cutting edge graphics and great storytelling, could propel it to something very special. For me if Diablo 4 isn’t a 9 or 10 out of 10, the year will mainly be a bust for me personally. This is the game i want. Granted the other two games i want won’t happen and thats a Red Dead 1 & 2 next gen, and Gears of War ultimate collection 1-3.
That vote result looks about right. Starfield is going to be insane, I love Todd Howard's games.
Wow. That is a LOT more confidence in Starfield than I expected
@NeutronBomb I agree
That one game released in 2023 that sold a lot and won a lot of awards, will be the game of the year for 2023. You know the game most of this board bought and praised that got super high reviews.
@grumpypotato yeah i ain’t voting for a remake, but I probably will get around to playing RE4 at some point, i am sure it will be well done and fun to play. Yeah i hope Starfield gets a decent showcase in a few months. People need to see more of it. But once it hits Xbox it will do well as there has been so little AAA’s ahead of it. 2023 is going to be a wild year in the industry.
I feel like it has to be Starfield. I mean, when a game is in development for 30, 40, 50 years, it has to turn out great. Right?
Stalker 2. If it does come out this year, its post apocalyptic horror vibe might be a winner.
For me its A Plague Tale: Requiem and Hogwarts Legacy. At this point, even if its a total masterpiece, Starfield does not deserve the win.
