I generally use paramount+ for the Nickelodeon classic cartoons for my kids. Now I get to enjoy something on there!
It does seem like a couple plot points are already different. For instance, the quote where he says “find halo, end the war”. In the games halo was a more or less accidental discovery (Cortana having just a suspicion and directing them there). But it does look like what I would expect a high budget Halo series to look like which is great!
I personally don’t feel like the Call of Duty exclusive question matters as much with Xbox and exclusives as other aspects of this deal. I don’t mean that Call of duty is a small thing… it’s huge! But what’s more valuable to MS early on (before they sort out this contract stuff) is getting control of the studios and taking off all of the support studios from COD. Letting Toys for Bob, Raven, and others create new IPs or work on sequels to long lost franchises is going to be the more immediate boost to Xbox exclusives (within a few years) as they sort out the Call of Duty stuff over the course of this generation. Kinda like how Arkane released Deathloop and now is already creating new games in Redfall and whatever the Deathloop studio is starting.
Personally I want more Tony Hawk and for Toys for Bob to do some sort of platformer (classic mascot or new ip idc)
@LtSarge so the last call of duty campaign j played (with the only exception being ww2) was Call of Duty 2 on 360. I sort of quit call of duty when it went to modern warfare because at the time I loved the ww2 era so much. But the way you’re talking about black ops and modern warfare as a story arc makes me look forward to trying those out!
As a side note, I’d love to see an expanded COD stand alone story (separate from multiplayer) with a lot of time and care put into it.
I like the idea of a combined universe game but not a smash clone. It should be some type of arena shooter/slasher game. That would fit these properties better.
Also, there would have to be separation between the mature games and mascots. I just can’t see the chainsaw gun being used to slash Spyro in half. It just doesn’t feel right. You’d have to have the family style game and the mature one.
@IronMan30 I posed this thought on another forum. But doesn’t Microsoft have a lot of openings at other studios? If there was a need to shrink the workforce a little, could they move these employees to other studios? The Initiative down the road could use workers
@Microbius I’m with you. I played Call of Duty WW2s campaign as a history buff, but the last COD game I actually played before that was Call of Duty 2 (Not modern warfare 2… the actual 2…. The ww2 one on 360).
That being said. If one of these studios made a single player focused COD story that was longer, more developed, and took you on a legit journey, I would totally play it!
In looking at the Bloomberg article, one of the worries seem to be layoffs. I totally get that because I saw somewhere there’s like 10.000 employees. But aren’t there several Xbox studios that are still hiring? Assuming there would be any need to lessen the staff numbers at all at AB (there may not be) could Xbox offer these workers job at some of their other studios? Just a thought.
@electrolite77 I’m with you on Xbox not being the ones to buy EA. They just spent a ton on Activision/Blizzard. They’re not gonna add 50 billion more in spending. My worry is it would be someone like a Tencent or Google.
The only purchases j still feel would be cool for MS would be like an IO Interactive or Asobo. I think we’re good on publishers lol
As long as this is for some legitimate licensing issue (or a similar reason) that makes sense. However, if it’s the result of external pressure because people are uncomfortable with the game topic or something like that, then that would be pretty lame. But it’s most likely a licensing/legal thing.
Halo 2 - best story, halo 3 - best gaming memories, halo 1 - most game changing and for its time the biggest leap forward in gameplay and first person storytelling.
But I agree Halo Infinite might have risen to the top for me when it comes to gameplay and just enjoyment while playing.
Since I never owned a ps4 (ps3 was my last PlayStation) I might invest and give this a play through now. When I had a ps3 I had the god of war 1+2 combo and couldn’t get through it. But I know this one plays much more modern. I’m excited!
@LtSarge I think stealing the spotlight would probably happen anyway with horizon and god of war coming. But I think this last year proved MS is on the upswing and at this point, not in danger of completely floundering. If I’m not desperate for MS to “take the crown” so to speak and am simply excited about the future of Xbox, I’m feeling pretty good moving forward. Within a couple years PS will easily be outselling Xbox by millions, but Xbox will also be doing better than ever with both sales and game offerings.
For me the only thing that stinks about this is the wasted time. I LOVE sea of thieves but this one, other than looking beautiful from an art direction perspective, hasn’t interested me at all. I’m more interested in whatever Rare will do next after this.
@Would_you_kindly I actually agree about the meta story of halo 5. I didn’t mind it. I just didn’t like only playing as chief for 3 missions.
But I wouldn’t say this makes it pointless. It actually does follow up on 5. The disappointment I felt was like never seeing important characters from 5, so where they are is still up in the air. But the Cortana thing actually wraps up well.
@Would_you_kindly I’m super into the old halo stories (5 as the exception) and very much a classic halo gamer. I also, as a result, was slightly disappointed in the sort of hollow narrative feel I felt while playing through Infinite. However, if you enjoy Halo it is well worth a play through, and is tied with Psychonauts for my GOTY. It doesn’t feel like classic Halo in a lot of ways narratively, but it is its own new experience and is amazing for what it is. And the Halo gameplay is better than ever. Horizon 5 is definitely amazing though too so I’ll give that to you.
The beat days of multiplayer gaming existed before online gaming IMO. You and your friends battled it out. You didn’t worry about making a game your life to be on some international leaderboard. You just had fun and went on. And also, in reference to this article, they were your friends and weren’t hiding behind a pseudo name. So they either didn’t say stuff like this or id they did you punched them, fixed your disagreements, and went on.
I still enjoy halo online as well as many other games. But I will forever be an old person at heart when it comes to my feelings in online gaming. That’s why I still play only with friends I know in person really and single player campaigns.
It’s just my opinion. But the world was better before we were absorbed in the internet.(and believe me I get the irony of saying this with a pseudonym while actively checking this new site every day).
I’m still excited for this. But am I the only one that actually just WANTED the first game as a movie? Honestly I just wanted to relive the original game in a cinematic experience. That would’ve been cool. I get it though. Gotta do something new. And it looks great.
@themightyant interesting. Well if anything it shows that it’s popular right now. Or at least has a fairly large and super passionate fan base. So that’s bodes well for now with player count.
As someone who didn’t sit for over three hours to watch this, it seems like a decent list of trailers and reveals. But I’ll bet it was boring sitting and watching that long. I played Halo Infinite instead lol
I’m just out into the open world right now. I’m certainly feeling the “awe” that I felt when first playing Halo CE back in the day and the gameplay is awesome. Right now I’m super curious as to why they keep referencing certain people as “dead” so I’m wondering if there is a twist to come or if that person really is dead and that’s this games way of wiping out the past to do a fresh restart.
@Tharsman that seems like a breath of the wild or borderlands 1 style of storytelling. That’s not bad if it’s done right. I’m looking forward to at least trying it out.
@Justifier I’m like you. When I’m in the mood I want to simply marathon a story so I like that I can do that. However, I also will be exploring everywhere and soaking everything up my first time.
@themightyant I like what you said about the trade off of going open world and then losing narrative pacing. A friend of mine enjoyed BOTW but was such a serious classic Zelda fan he was left disappointed with its simple story and less of a focus on the narrative driven dungeons. I myself have noticed the trade off in assassins creed as the new gameplay style adds a lot and is a fresh change of pace (since Origins) but I do miss the classic AC formula.
I think the simple story here will definitely give many similar vibes, with the gameplay itself being fresh and exciting, but the narrative being more simplistic. I think where I’m still holding on; though, is that it seems like this isn’t so much an entire story, but part of a new story, based on how they are handling expansions with this. I think if they don’t solve the previous story threads by the end of whatever campaign expansions they do last (I’m gonna guess at least two more stories in this) then I’ll be really disappointed. But since I know they didn’t solve all those threads here, I am a little disheartened, but will have a better understanding of what I will experience and will hold out for the full tying up of story threads in the future.
@themightyant to me a good story is subjective. Look at the extreme opinions on the last of us 2 as proof of divisive possibilities. From what I’m getting this game kinda goes the direction of breath of the wild when it comes to story. By this I mean they went back to a simple, personal story, as opposed to a cinematic, linear, surprise filled story. Whether or not I’ll love or hate it remains to be seen, but knowing that campaign expansions are coming in the pipeline for this (this is only part 1 of infinites story) a basic reset might not be that awful. I think for me what will be disappointing is if I treat it like halo 6 (end of a story arc from halo 4 and 5) rather than halo infinite (start of a new story arc). I definitely wanted a halo 6 to wrap up the story but will be okay with seeing where this goes.
My overall point I guess is that good and bad are relative, but simple and convoluted are not. This one seems to have gone the simple route. I’m not loving hearing this, but am approaching it as the beginning of something new.
@UltimateOtaku91 from what I’m getting there are larger questions you won’t understand but the moment to moment story will be more personal and about the characters on screen, avoiding having to know too much about the old driving narrative. For extreme halo lore fans it might be disappointing but for newbies it might be okay.
Not really a fan of the never ending looter shooter thing. So even though I’ve been disappointed with the story Of Halo post Bungie (though some aspects are growing on me) at least we’re getting a story still, and the universe is expanding. Destiny’s story was basically not even there. If that formula had been used for Halo I would have fallen off way sooner, and wouldn’t be here excited to try Halo Infinite.
@IronMan30 definitely! Loving it! I’m not into cosmetics so I’m just enjoying the gameplay and it feels like halo 3 if it were made today. Which I love
@IronMan30 I’m with you! I say 85. The game to me is shaping up to be one of the best halos. But since it’s open and will depend on the players choices and experience (not so much hand crafted and linear) it’ll get a variety of scores and rate in the 80s on average.

@__jamiie I’m with you. The last week has shown me this is more of a “protect gaming from Apple, Google” move than anything.
