It's been a number of years since we got Halo: The Master Chief Collection. It was quite a unique bundle, as missions and maps could be interchanged at will, well, when it was fixed at least. Since then, there's been all sorts of talk about a Gears of War collection, and a new rumour points towards something similar coming.
This week's 'XboxEra' podcast discussed a new rumour surrounding an 'MCC-style' collection being developed for another Xbox franchise. One of the show's hosts, "Shepshal Nick", didn't name the series, but said he's been told it's in the works and could release this or next year. Here's the timestamp:
Details are incredibly light here, so take it with a grain of salt. The hosts speculate on a bunch of Xbox franchises, including Gears of War, Fable, and possibly something from Bethesda's catalogue.
As pure speculation on our part, Gears of War seems to fit the bill the most. It has extensive online play, which could cross over multiple games, and of course the series is hugely popular.
There was also something that could be considered a tease posted by Gears developer The Coalition earlier this year. The team posted a New Years 2022 message, along with some extremely detailed Gears of War 2-era artwork that certainly looks like more than a 2008 leftover.
Fable could also make a lot of sense, to bring players back into the fold before Playground Games' reboot launches in the coming years. Again, both of these are just speculation on our part, and we'd like to see either to be honest!
Which Xbox franchise do you want to see remastered? Let us know below.

I couldn't hazard a guess, but I hope if it's a game that originally only had online multiplayer that it features local multiplayer in the remake. Even remakes of original Xbox, Xbox 360, and early Xbox One games should be capable of supporting local multiplayer on the Xbox Series X|S.
Edit: I'm going to go out on a limb — a distant limb — and suggest Microsoft is going to remake Rare's classic platformer Digger T. Rock: Legend of the Lost City, featuring procedurally-generated levels, and switchable 8-bit, 16-bit, HD, and 4K graphics and music.
All the 360 Gears games got FPS boost so there's not much more to be done on them for a collection. Fable 1 and 3 got FPS boost so maybe a Fable collection where 2 gets a full remaster?
Pls be Fable, would love that
Gears and Fable are both my personal prime candidates. I wouldn't want a lazy collection though. They would have to remaster either Gears 2 or Fable II, similar how we got that gorgeous Halo 2 Anniversary version.
@LX_FENIX We could get a reworking. There is more than just upping resolution and frame rate.
Instead of another "collection" how about a halo, forza, gears, fable shared universe, deck building, roguelite, co-op hack n slash looter, racer?
I mean, it has to be Fable. The franchise has been pretty much dead since the 360 era, while Gears has seen plenty of life on One and it's already going great for that series. There's more of a reason to remake the Fable trilogy in order to generate hype for the Fable reboot as well as interest for the franchise as a whole.
Because of Microsoft's efforts for OG Xbox and 360 backwards compatibility on XB1/Series X|S, the primary reason for a new remastered collection would be to give PC players an opportunity to play games that were previously only playable on OG Xbox or 360.
Hence I think it's Gears because that has 3 games not on PC (2, 3, Judgment) meanwhile Fable only has 1 (Fable 2).
I do think if Age of Empires 4 does come to console, the remastered Age of Empires collection will also come to console to help close the gap between PC and console.
Gears is what is what I would expect but that odd fable tweet a while back makes me think it's actually fable.
Got to be gears surely
Considering Gears 6 is apparently looking like a 2024 game, I'd put my money on a 'Marcus Fenix Collection'.
The only issue is the games already look and play great due to resolution and FPS Boost, so unless the upgrades are significant, it could be rather a pointless release.
@Krzzystuff what tweet is that?
@Rural-Bandit Yeah I mean, it's plausible that either one of the franchises will see a remastered collection. A Marcus Fenix Collection makes a lot of sense as well. I just feel like we've already seen Gears 4 and 5 keeping people interested in the series, and even the Gears 1 remaster that came out on Xbox One in 2015. So to me, it makes more sense to bring back Fable this way.
@blinx01 It came to mind that with the 360 Halo servers shut down earlier this month that the 360 Gears servers probably aren't far off, the existence of a collection would preserve the multiplayer.
I'm hoping for Project Gotham Racing.
All resources on New games please Xbox.
Unless it is a massive remaster in the likes of Demon Souls for the PS5.
I mean look at the uncharted remaster coming later this month, hardly worth it.
Gears of war still looks good today in some ways, so these little tart ups of graphics are hardly worth the resource or effort.
I think they are used as game gap fillers as new games are not ready to release yet and it makes some the general public, look wow a new game.
@Chaudy second this. Fable collection in 4k would be awesome.
Fable wouldn't work for an "MCC style" game. Firstly because of the lack of MP, secondly because the SP isn't individual levels that allow mix and match.
A Fable collection would ultimately just be a front end loader. And once you're in a game, you aren't coming out for a few hours at least. Unlike MCC which sees you come back to the menu every 15 to 30 mins to start a new session. Wouldn't be MCC like at all. This would be the same problem with anything like Elder Scrolls or Fallout.
Gears would better fit an MCC style game, so would Quake. But both of these have a remaster of the first game already on Xbox One/Series. Doom already has all of its games on current systems so an MCC style game would be pointless unless it's a free upgrade.
Gears is the only game that fits this kind of game.
@Cherip-the-Ripper the fable anniversary one a few months ago that just got squashed almost as soon as it went out. They wouldn't have sent that if it wasn't related to something, i imagine it it delayed and someone missed a memo and sent it out as originally intended.
A Gears of War Collection in UE5!
Part of the Coalitions 'learning' curve with the engine, practice with getting the trilogy ported into and remastered in UE5....
Fable would be a great choice to boost its popularity before Fable 4. However, it should be Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie and Nuts & Bolts. It would make a lot of sense, like the Crash trilogy before 4. Microsoft have five studios that could work on a new Banjo-Kazooie game: Rare, Double Fine, Toys for Bob, Beenox and Vicarious Visions.
@Smeltos absolute classic games. They should bring it back, such a great franchise
Can I just get a Halo 3 anniversary on the MCC? It’s the oldest looking Halo now.
@Rural-Bandit No I mean you're absolutely right. I was actually going back and forth in my mind in terms of things that made sense and that's the thing, since it's a Fable reboot, you don't really need to play the Fable trilogy. And if Gears 6 comes out, then it would be nice to go through the old games again in preparation for that. So in that regard, you're definitely correct.
A Gears collection would be fantastic..
@Rural-Bandit
I know you love the gears and so do I.
But they do look and play amazing as is.
They good use the resource if they must doing a gears add on like Hive Busters 2 😊
It's gotta be the Jetman games of course!
@Dezzy70 Demon's Souls is a remake 😅
i hopr its fable.
Hoping for Fable. Loved 2 & 3 (the magic system was best in 2). Tried to play Fable Anniversary but it was too dated to enjoy.
Only Gears make sense, given how big the multiplayer component of MCC is to that bundle. Fable is perfectly well served with BC, but they likely want to, sooner or later, get rid of the 360 gears servers (if they are still running at all.)
Are they gonna at least give the original first game the treatment and not the ultimate edition? Cause I was a bit disappointed in how they didn't manage to bring back to horror feel from the original.
@Tharsman The servers are still on, just not particularly active much like the 360 Halo servers prior to the shutdown announcement. Most opponents are bots in matchmaking.
I really hope it isn’t Gears, the series has already been remastered and enhanced. I’d much rather it was the Fable series, I’d love to play them again with the power of Series X.
@Smeltos Great shout on Project Gotham Racing, I totally forgot Activision Blizzard owned the IP and now with the buyout MS can bring it to Xbox if they wanted. But now that we have the Forza series, both Motorsport and Horizon, would they be any desire to make a new PGR? It’s doubtful. I’d love to play the first 3 though but seeing as they stopped bringing more games through backward compatibility I don’t see it happening.
My only wish is for Xbox to remaster Buffy & Bethesda to remaster/boost Wet.
I'm actually happy with how good the original GoW games currently look/feel on XSS so I don't think they need it yet?
Yeah Gears makes the most sense here. It would be pretty awesome too to have all the MPs of the Gears series rolled into one package. Well assuming it works properly anyway. Fable wouldn't really benefit too much in any meaningful way that I can think of especially since after 2 the series seemed to lose its way(Though I never played any of them after 2 so I might be wrong but 1 and 2 seem to be the ones most talked about).
Though please if you do Gears let the added content to Gears 1 campaign be optional. I hated that section in Ultimate!
Only my 2nd year into xbox, finished the MCC and halo infinite. Ready to start either Gears or Fable but worried with gears that I'll like the remaster of 1 and not the rest of the series.
Either way, I'm down for whatever gets remastered.
@umeandgames I played them for the first time in 2021 before the FPS boost. All of them hold up really well and are a blast to play. The only ones that I didn't like as much as the others were Judgement and 5, actually. Hivebusters (5 expansion) is cool, though.
The Elder Scrolls Collection: Arena (HD), Daggerfall (HD), Morrowind (4K), Oblivion (4K), and the first fully
remastered Skyrim (8K) of course.
Just in time to pull a new generation of gamers into the saga for the release of The Elder Scrolls VI
@Banjo- That helps, thanks.
Hopefully Fable. Last time I tried to play Fable Anniversary on XBSX it ran horribly.
We never got Fable II or Gears 2 & 3 on PC.
An MCC style remaster will help here a lot!
Plz, Philly Spee ....
I reckon its Forza
Gears trilogy should have been done instead of 1 Ultimate Edition. Better late than never.
@MaccaMUFC Driving games suffer with music and vehicle licensing but would love to see PGR(although I still own all 4!). Forza Horizon would make sense though they just couldnt necessarily have all of the cars or songs the originals had, I think eventually MS will have a fair few key franchises consolidated in this way my guess would be Gears next.
Blinx the Timewseeper. Poor guy deserves a break.
@Rural-Bandit You make it sound like UE5 is hard to learn. Give it a try, it's a great place to start.
Viva Pinata.
I would rather have a Forza collection though.
@umeandgames don’t worry - if it isn’t Gears, the old versions still play great. They’ve updated the first and 2 still looks great.
Fable 2 looks terrible on XSX and I’ve been really keen on playing it, so make it happen lol.
It is definitely advent Rising.
