Double Fine's Psychonauts 2 has undoubtedly been one of the biggest success stories of 2021 for Xbox (Phil Spencer even suggested it was "probably" his game of the year), but now the team is switching its focus to new projects.
In an update on Fig (as highlighted by VGC), it was explained that Psychonauts 2 has "essentially wrapped up as a project", and now the studio is splitting into teams to work on different projects "that we think you'll enjoy."
"Psychonauts 2 has essentially wrapped up as a project although there will be tweaks and fixes as we move forward. The studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll enjoy. We like experimentation here at Double Fine. Every game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual styles or gameplay, emotions, and more."
The message from Double Fine went on to say that the team members "think the pay off was pretty great" with Psychonauts 2, stating that they "stuck the landing". We certainly agree, having given it a coveted 10/10 earlier this year!
Double Fine's main focus now in regards to Psychonauts 2 is to get the remaining Fig rewards shipped out to backers, which has faced some issues up until now due to COVID-19 related issues:
"Our focus moves to these new projects but we’re also intensely tracking incoming support tickets sent our way and working with distributors to get folks their rewards as soon as our strange world allows. These are still somewhat uncertain times where even something like paper can be in short supply and affect production of goods. As the year ends, I hope each of you get to enjoy some rest and comfort with family and friends."

Double fine, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Bethesda. These are just some of the reasons why Xbox is gonna kill it. Can't wait to see what's next for all studios but especially double fine!
Double Fine is very creative, can't wait to see what they do next. Loved Psychonauts 2
I'm interested to see their next game now that we know it's exclusive.
Iron Brigade 2 please.
A new Brutal Legend is what I need. Jack Black and rock n' roll!
Sounds like they might be turning into what Rare should have been allowed to back in the day. A shot at their past, but obviously a big positive for their future.
@KilloWertz imagine handing Double Fine the Banjo-Kazooie IP for a modern day brand new project. Using platforming mechanics from Psychonauts. Could be awesome.
I’m excited to see what they do next. Whether it is a platformer like psychonauts or adventure game like grim fandango or something else, I’ll be sure to check it out. As suggested above, I’d like to see their take on Banjo-Kazooie, but I also think their take on Conker would be hilarious.
They can bother to release a disc edition of Pyschonauts 2 first, outside of NA.
@MyThoughts31 They did, for people who went in on their crowdfunding campaign.
Is it too much to ask for Costume Quest 3?
@Sakisa Only released in NA and excludes everyone else. Yet more NA only physical releases from Limited Run or Double Fine. I won't buy another game from either for exactly this reason.
In an ideal world it'll be Grim Fandango 2 or Brutal Legend 2 (without the RTS).
@Johnnel I'm totally riding with you on them getting the conkers licence and running with it. The writing would be spot on.
I'll be really sad they're leaving Psychonauts behind. It was so great and left me wanting more. I'm sure anything they put out will be fantastic. It always has been. But it's sad to leave that behind.
