Not sure why this trailer is getting so much hate. It was one of the best trailers of the showcase and the casting is 10/10. Given its playground games, I have confidence in the developer and I think this going to be one of the must play games coming from Xbox Game Studios in the future. However it is probably still way off. Maybe early or Mid 2025?
It was the best games showcase this year. The Summer Gamefest was a solid F. Playstation was a solid C and this was a B.
The problem was the lack of Gameplay however it was nice to see some updates from Xbox Game Studios.
Starfield, Fable, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Forza Motorsport all look and sound promising.
There's not much for 2023 apart from the obvious big 2. No shadow drops was also disappointing.
Avowed was perhaps the most disappointing showing. That one looks rough. Hellblade 2 looks just as boring as the first one.
Overall some solid looking Line up for Xbox. It's looking better from a single player perspective for Xbox than it does for Playstation...and I never thought I'd ever be saying that.
@InterceptorAlpha well considering how well Final Fantasy 7 Remake did, how loved it is by the FF fans and the fact that it got so much critical acclaim.
Considering the previews of FF16, I think it's fair to expect that this is going to be a huge game and one that Xbox only players will definitely miss out on. The Gameplay looks phenomenonal and it's a next gen only game, so it's very promising from what has been shown so far.
This is definitely something that Xbox only players will be missing out on. The game looks incredible of course we still need to wait and actually see how it turns out but from all the previews so far, it's looks extremely promising.
So if they actually get Starfield, Forza and Hallblade 2 out this year plus get the Activision deal approved then that's one hell of a turn around to what's been a poor 2022/23 for Xbox. It would be a huge win and really put Xbox in a strong position not just for GamePass but in the gaming industry as a whole.
What is the point of this then? They could literally show a bunch of cgi trailers for games that won't come out for the next 5 years.
The truth is that these are just hour long commercials for consoles so they include stuff that we won't see for years and years just to build fake hype. If they actually stuck to "next 12 months" then we'd only see like 5 games, out of which 2 would be worth playing and the other 3 would be mediocre.
The comments about engagement are true, people on Game pass are less likely to finish the game when compared to purchasing. That's why xbox game Completion rates are much lower when compared to Playstation
@Markatron84 those dates are crazy, everwild announced in 2019, that's 4 years and we don't even know what this game looks like. Elders Scrolls announced in 2018 but likely won't be out until well after Starfield. That's 5+ years, maybe even 10.
I don't think it will, I think the EU will rule against the acquisition. If that does happen then I can't see Microsoft battling US, EU and UK at the same time in court. But if the EU approves the deal then there is still a major chance of this going ahead.
Should it happen? Is another question we must ask. Given the current state of First Party studios, there is no way it should happen. I get that people just want Call of Duty and other Activision games on game pass as soon as possible but they are not looking at the overall picture. You can't deny that Microsoft has a huge problem with managing its internal studios, I don't care if its a full hands off approach. Whatever it the approach, its clearly not working as seen with Halo Infinite, the drought of 2022 and the launch of Redfall. Priorities should be in-house for Xbox. Get your studios in a state where they are pumping out quality games consistently first.
Would be a complete waste of resources. The old games still hold up so well. Not to mention that Gears of War 1 already has a updated version. Gears 2 & 3 look great as they are. It would be better to focus and work on Gears 6.
@SplooshDmg your comments about gamepass quality are absolutely spot on. In the June 2022 showcase there was a number of new xbox games pass games announced. Of course not all of them have been released yet. Here's a list of 11 showcase day 1 new releases on Game Pass and its metacritic score
1. Pentiment - 86
2. A Plague Tale Requiem - 85
3. Grounded - 82
4. Wo long - 79
5. As Dusk Falls - 77
6. Minecraft Legends - 71
7. Last Case of Benedict Fox - 69
8. Ravenlok - 68
9. High on Life - 67
10. Scorn - 64
11. Redfall - 59
Only 3 out of the 11 have scored above 80, there are 2 games that fall between 75 and 79. Meaning 6 games (over half relased) have scored rather poorly, mostly in the high 60s or low.
I picked the showcase releases because that's a huge marketing event for Xbox and they supposedly pick the best games coming to the service in the next 12 months but it highlights a quality issue. Of course we've had some other good games release on the service that were not part of the showcase like Hi-Fi Rush and this doesn't include Persona games because they aren't brand new games but overall seems to show a quality problem or at least a inconsistency issue.
@UltimateOtaku91 yeah true just shows that optimisation was never a priority for the development team. I guess they had too many problems with the game engine. Only they really know the real story.
If quality is being ignored just because "it's on Gamepass" then very soon all games on gamepass would resort to this quality and that's all you'll be left to play with on the service. Let's not forget that the game is also being sold at Full price which is just day light robbery at this point given what the game has turned out to be.
@NEStalgia yeah again you make some good points. It's "a" factor but not "the" factor. Its perhaps not as straightforward, it will certainly help push them up the ladder but like you say there will be other factors at the end of the day.
@Dezzy70 yeah there's a quite a few people out there who only play the big production games mainly. There's many reasons for that e.g. personal preference, lack of time, gaming budget etc. So naturally some Xbox fans will be a bit disappointed by the comments made but hopefully it's upwards from here for Xbox. Still got quite a few games lined up and let's be honest if Starfield scores well then no one is going to remember Redfall. So all is not lost.
@Blessed_Koz 100% spot on, I also think it's a defeatist way of looking at things. Everyone on Pure xbox or Push Square got into gaming because they wanted to play great games. It's always been about that for us since day 1. I don't think anything else matters. I get there are factors but I still believe that great games sell consoles. Nobody likes missing out on great games.
@NEStalgia yeah you make a good point about the success being built on the missteps of xbox, but the Exclusives they have still easily sell in the millions, I mean look at how big Ragnarok was last year and in prior years, look at the success of Spiderman, last of us, Uncharted. It does still draw customers to their platform. Perhaps not 100% of the fan base but I still think a large chunk is attracted toward the system because of the quality of Exclusives.
@TheArtfulDodger absolutely spot on. Sony literally became successful due to great games. People would flock to Xbox in a heartbeat if they started making great games. Games sell systems. It's simple as that. Everything else is secondary.
I think the only reason he said that is because they know they can't compete with Sony level quality. They don't have the talent or experience or even the strategies required to achieve this.
He said in the interview that even if Xbox builds great games they can't win the generation because they lost the last generation in which people built huge digital libraries. People won't ditch those libraries no matter what.
I'm not sure I agree with that. There's only so many times a person can play an old game until they get bored. Also who are these people that continuesly play old games? There's barely enough time to play new games.
This doesn't make sense because Phil Spencer literally posted a tweet to say that it was a difficult decision to delay redfall and starfield. So you knew the projects were having problems a year ago. When you already knew there was a problem then at that point you would expect that you'd keep a close eye on them, with stricter quality checks. It's not like this was a last minute thing, where on Sunday you saw the finished game and thought "oh no we can't do anything now because we have to release it on Monday".
@Sebatrox okay so reading that it feels like creative independence is a double edge sword. It's good because it promotes healthy working environment but having no internal reviews and a completely hands off approach also means that it can result in games like Redfall where the developer just doesn't care.
So it feels like there is a gap between Xbox and its acquired studios whereby there is no sign off from Xbox itself on the finished product or checks during development when certain milestones are met.
It's perhaps then more beneficial to implement checks both during and after production with the goal of emphasising quality rather than strict constraints that limit the developer. Like in the article I think it would make sense at this stage to invest in this area where quality control checks are made and perhaps reduce the hands off approach slightly because whatever these acquired Studios now produce would reflect on the Xbox brand.
@Dezzy70 I mean it's one thing having poor quality control but it's another thing when there are no consequences and instead it's being celebrated as if its a huge accomplishment.
Imagine working for any other firm, say its Amazon. You have a team whose working to overhaul Amazon Prime Video. You release the finished build and barely anything works. The videos crash and the app has serious performance issues. Core functionality is broken. In what world would Amazon management celebrate that? Or in what world would Amazon employees be proud of that accomplishment? From leadership to test team would be held accountable.
Yet we've got Arkane employees celebrating what is let's be honest one of the worst games of the year. Even IGN gave it a 4/10. User score is like 2.5 now on Metacritic. It has worse overall critic score than forspoken. I mean I see this guy celebrating and it feels like I'm living in some alternative universe where nothing makes sense anymore.
Maybe the game industry works differently and they appreciate failure.
In any other software development role, whether working in a multi-million dollar project with a consulting firm or even a tech start up. If lots of software breaking bugs/issues are released then the test team is held accountable and berated. I'm actually shocked as to how this is being celebrated. Its so surreal.

It was great if you love CGI trailers.
Having said that, I'm looking forward to Fable, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Starfield, Forza Motorsport from Xbox.
