We've got confirmation of the next Mortal Kombat game! Mortal Kombat 1 will arrive for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on September 19th, 2023, with a beta dropping in August for those who pre-order the game.
Mortal Kombat 1 is described as the start of a "new era" for the series, featuring a "reborn" MK Universe:
"Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest title in the acclaimed Mortal Kombat videogame franchise developed by award-winning NetherRealm Studios. The game will introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe that has been created by the Fire God Liu Kang, featuring reimagined versions of iconic characters as they’ve never been seen before, along with a new fighting system, game modes, bone krushing finishing moves, and more."

"NetherRealm’s genre-defining Story Mode returns with an immersive cinematic narrative featuring unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories for a wide-ranging cast of legendary fighters, including Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. Mortal Kombat 1 will also introduce Kameo Fighters, a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players."
You'll be able to purchase Mortal Kombat 1 beginning this Friday, May 19th for $69.99, with everyone who pre-orders the game getting Shang Tsung as a playable character, as well as that aformentioned beta access in August. There will also be a Premium Edition and a Kollector's Edition for $109.99 and $249.99 respectively.
More details about Mortal Kombat 1 are available in the game's FAQ, including the confirmation that it'll support rollback netcode, along with more details on what to expect from those Premium and Kollector's Editions.

Really was hoping for some gameplay or anything that shows what the game will be like. Apparently there’s assists so that should be fun. Just hope the loot system is gone. Excited for this but I need to see more.
@Kaloudz I was thinking the same! Great trailer with a near release date, not in some distant future!
Isn’t it
KONFORMATION
Great trailer. I haven't played MK in years but a reboot makes me more likely to jump in.
That said locking the Boss Shang-Tsung and Beta access behind pre-orders is scummy. Not a fan.
Mortak Kombat, Street Fighter, and Tekken all in the same year, a huge comeback for fighting games. All we need now is a new (good) Dead or Alive.
I read this on PS and there it looked like a PS exclusive: PS5 game, PS showcase, Sony is a great supporter of Mortal Kombat... I'm relieved to know that Sony didn't pay for another third-party game to exclude Xbox!
@Kaloudz 5 years later...or never, lol.
Very cool, but I’ll be waiting awhile. They come out with all those character packs and DLC along the way, and then bring out another version that has all the DLC. I’ll wait for that one.
@themightyant they did the same thing with MK11, if my remember correctly. I vaguely recall needing to buy Shang Tsung separately in that game.
@EvilSilentFrame yep, Mortal Kombat 1 Ultimate all but guaranteed in 18-24 months.
Yep, loved MK11, but as cool as a beta access may sound, I will wait until the "Ultimate" version arrives. I think that is a given, right?
@Banjo- It is even coming to the Switch!
And yes, it is good to have publishers who release their games on all big platforms, unlike SE!
Maybe this one brings me back to the series. Wasn't a fan of all the new "next generation" characters and story,
To think there was a big group of people claiming Jez was full of it by simply “guessing” or “making up” that the game would indeed be called Mortal Kombat 1.
@Tharsman no joke. He’s pretty accurate down the Switch version.
@HarmanSmith Yes, it's coming for Switch! i wonder how that will look... 🤪
@Kaloudz Really? I thought it was an utterly useless trailer. Tells me nothing about the game and has zero gameplay footage.
Hi there fellow gamers.
What a year for fighting games it´s turning out to be.
With Street Fighter 6 on June, Mortal Kombat 1 on September and Tekken 8 on the horizon.
Now for a proper gameplay trailer...... Maybe on the Playstation showcase next week orr the Xbox showcase next month or even the Summer Game Fest perhaps??? Hopefuly in one of these three events.
Can´t wait to see more.
Cheers, and happy gaming folks
Shang Tsung only as pre-order bonus?
Ugh, I really hate modern gaming!
It used to be we'd pay one price and get a full roster.
We'd work to unlock new characters and fighters.
Kameo fighters sounds like how the recent Power Ranger fighting game was/is.
Hated it in Mario Kart, hated it in Power Rangers.
Hope it's not needed to be used here or I'll hate it here too!
@Clyde_Radcliffe Agreed. Bit of a nothing trailer.
@Banjo- Why would they exclude Xbox? Sony will get marketing rights and stuff but even WB and NRS won’t exclude Xbox since I believe they’re American companies and Mortal Kombat has always been successful multiplatform.
@Banjo- well according to NRS website, the Switch version is being developed by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive.
@anoyonmus Because of how it's been worded on Push Square.
@Banjo- as in it has been announced for PS5?
It’s similarly worded here too. And on NintendoLife the same thing.
they only announce their respective platform for each site.
@Banjo-
Sony doesn't have pockets deep enough to pay for a Mortal Kombat exclusive deal
@Spider-Kev It's always been like with fighting game as far as I can remember.
Remember when Street Fighter II came out, only to be followed by championship edition, only to be followed by Street Fighter II Turbo, then Super SFII and so on? And you had to buy the full game each time to get the new characters. Mortal Kombat was not better: MK3, UMK3, MK Trilogy, etc.
It would be nice that they threw a hidden unlockable character in the base game, like there used to be in the old games.
@RaZieLDaNtE you mean Street Fighter 6? Street Fighter 5 came out already.
@anoyonmus Hi there friend.
Oops, my bad 😜
SFV was so lackluster when it came out, that I stoped playing the game and sold it.
Only when Season 3 arrived with the Arcade Edition, that I eventualy bought the game back and had some fun with it.
From what we´ve seen so far, I beleive SF6 will deliver.
Hopefuly Mortal Kombat 1 will also be a fantastic game.
Cheers and have a good one
@anoyonmus No, It's not just that, I already explained it (#8). Have a good night/day.
I still have 11 sitting on my shelf, never touched. Someday I'll get to it and potentially this as well.
