Re: Diablo 4 Could Be Shaping Up As Another 2023 GOTY Contender

Wilforce

I dunno about GOTY. The graphics engine is dramatically overhauled, but it’s still just Diablo. The game doesn’t revolutionize anything meaningful about the Isometric Action RPG. It’s fun and I’ll probably sink a good 300 hours or more into the game like I did every other Diablo game, but for me it’s like visiting a home with a new coat of paint. If anything it’s a step back from the predecessors since it’s no longer possible to match make with other players for playing through the story… not a fan of just bumping into other players and hoping we’re doing the same thing.

Re: Sony Has 'Sufficient' Time To Develop Call Of Duty Alternatives, Says Microsoft

Wilforce

Encouraging Sony to develop a Call of Duty competitor is surprisingly anti-consumer. I never liked how gamers are spread out across multiple platforms and believe there should be more uniformity on content. Having games like Call of Duty and Diablo be crossplay is important to me. Redfall being an Xbox console exclusive is frustrating. That and Sea of Thieves should be multi-platform with crossplay.

While I want this deal to go through, I am concerned about future control over the franchises that Microsoft will exert.

Re: PlayStation Boss Heavily Criticises Xbox For 'Inadquate' Call Of Duty Offer

Wilforce

This statement is loaded. “3 years after the current agreement” - when does the current agreement end? What are the details of the two agreements? Is the current agreement regarding exclusive content/skins/modes/demos/tests or is it a blanket agreement for keeping the game on the console?

As far as I can tell, the agreement is X+3 regarding keeping extra/exclusive content on the console. Sony needs to take the loss and move on, they have their fair share of exclusives and studios that they’ve acquired over the years.

Re: Microsoft Explains Why It 'Wouldn't Be Profitable' To Make Call Of Duty Xbox Exclusive

Wilforce

@uptownsoul It’s the work of editorialization. Though not necessarily far fetched considering that Starfield and Redfall are both Xbox exclusives, which I single out simply because of their high profile nature. In the context provided, it doesn’t seem like they discuss future games - only pre-existing. I don’t feel like reading through 27 pages, but my gut tells me there are loopholes where they could pull an exclusivity on unannounced games or franchises.

Re: Microsoft Defends Activision Blizzard Deal With Eyebrow-Raising Statement

Wilforce

Must haves are a matter of perception. I wouldn’t classify any Activision title as a must have. They sell well, but if Activision didn’t exist it wouldn’t matter because at the end of the day we’d still have hundreds of similar titles. One could argue that their titles are successful because of good marketing campaigns. Call of Duty is a one hit wonder, Blizzard games ride on the developer’s storied history despite many devs moving on to other companies, and since they practically disbanded Toys For Bob - they don’t have any other games in development.

Re: Talking Point: Which Is The Most Underrated Xbox Console To Date?

Wilforce

I’ll side with you on this. As an early adopter, my Xbox One is still alive and ticking while my original Xbox lost access to DLC ages ago and my Xbox 360 died after its 5th year. I totally supported Microsoft’s efforts to bring the Xbox to the living room with the pass through HDMI for cable boxes, built-in TV guide, and native Kinect support. Another feature that was never fully embraced is the second screen connectivity, lots of respect for EA with Battlefield and Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare taking advantage of that feature to give commanders and edge in the fight.

Re: Sony CFO Says That Game Pass-Style Launches Would Cause Exclusives To 'Deteriorate'

Wilforce

Microsoft treats their games as services, which by releasing them on Game Pass they can analyze usage over time and define end-of-life on a per-product basis. Sony on the other hand treats their games as a complete package. It’s difficult to shift, which can be seen in the release of Gran Turismo where the dev tried to go a different direction.

I think the Game Pass model has a lot of potential, but I also see an eventual consolidation if all developers and platforms start their own equivalent service. It would be a repeat of the cable and streaming wars where we see heavy consolidation, but most developers don’t release enough new content annually to justify having a dedicated game pass (I.e: EA, Ubisoft).

Re: Fans Aren't Happy About The Sonic Origins DLC Plan Already

Wilforce

I have so many questions… What is mirror mode? What can coins be spent on? What are music islands and why should I care about character animations? What is the difference between a letterbox background and a non-letterbox background? How do camera controls on the main menu islands impact gameplay?
