It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, with Saints Row The Third Remastered part of Free Play Days, along with the upcoming release of the Saints Row reboot, we thought we'd focus on this classic Xbox series.
You may recall that we did a Pick One about Saints Row this time last year, and "The Third" ended up winning the poll with 47% of the vote, followed by Saints Row 2 with 31%. Will the results be any different this time around...?
Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at what we're working with:
Saints Row (2006)
Join the 3rd Street Saints in their battle for control of Stilwater in the 1st urban open world game for the Xbox 360! Offering extensive character customization, 13 unique pick up activities, 4 story lines, and a sprawling city that's unlocked from the start, Saints Row is the next evolutionary step in open world gaming.
Saints Row 2 (2008)
Help the 3rd Streets take back their city in this explosive sequel to the 2006 hit. Saints Row 2 features unparalleled character creation and customization; a massive open world to explore by land, air or sea; and online co-op play that enables you and a friend play through the entire story of Saints Row 2.
Saints Row: The Third (2011 / 2020)
Years after taking Stilwater for their own, the Third Street Saints have evolved from street gang to household brand name. Their celebrity status has not gone unnoticed. The Syndicate, a legendary criminal fraternity with pawns in play all over the globe, has turned its eye on the Saints and demands tribute.
Saints Row IV (2013)
The Saints have gone from the crackhouse to the White House—but the Earth has been invaded and it’s up to you to free the world from Overlord Zinyak and his alien empire.
Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell (2015)
After the antics of Saints Row IV, many asked what we could do next...the answer? Shoot The Devil in the face. Play as either Johnny Gat or Kinzie Kensington as you tear apart Hell in a quest to save the Bosses’ soul. Historical icons, old friends, older enemies, a talking gun, a full length musical number & a whole lot more shenanigans await you in this open-world standalone expansion playground.
Let us know which of these Saints Row games is your favourite below.

Yeah, it will be the 3rd game for me. I actually haven’t played 1 and 2.
Saints row 2 is probably my favourite followed by number 3 and hated saints row 4.
They all have some merits. My view on each:
First one I just really liked the gang culture that felt like a family. Yes is was a GTA clone but it did enough differently to be it's own game.
Saints Row 2 I actually don't remember much and I may be conflating 1&2 a bit.
Saints Row The Third was when this series really got it's own identity and moved pretty far away from GTA. It felt pretty balanced in many ways both OTT but also grounded at times.
Saints Row IV was completely OTT which worked both in it's favour and against it. I loved most of the superhero like gameplay, but hated the over reliance on twelve year old d*** joke humour and lack of any realism. By this point It was hard to care about any of the characters.
Gat out of Hell was a pretty bad spin off, that left no where to go as they had Super Saiyaned at least 4 times in earlier games, thankfully it was a shorter game.
Still enjoyed most of them but it just went too far. If ever a series needed a reboot it is this one. Hopefully it's better than it seemed on first few impressions.
2 for sure. Played it again recently and still love it.
It's definitely not the 3rd it saints row 2 all day long
Think my rankings gotta be 2, 3, 1 then 4... seriously, like anyone gives a hoot about GooH 🙂
@ironcrow86 I think gat out of hell was better than 4 tbh 😂
I haven't played any Saints Row since The Third. It's my favourite BUT the first two were both great games. The first one came at a perfect time; pre GTA IV, so it picked up a lot of the open world crime game slack.
For me it's easily 3. Played through the original and remaster 3 times. Love how completely over the top it is. 4 was a bit to much with the aliens but still enjoyable. Never been a gta fan but somehow sr3 I loved
Definitely 2 for me. While I quite enjoyed 3, it felt a lot more bare bones compared to 2.
The second game had lots of side events (like spraying sewage, being a bodyguard, chauffeuring ladies of the night) but it also had the more serious main story and the missions related to those.
SR3 was basically all side events, but there was less variety in them (IIRC a bunch of them had been cut out for DLC) and it meant the game was basically over the top all the time. I much preferred 2’s mixture of grounded seriousness mixed with silliness.
From what I’ve seen so far though, I’d play any of them over the incoming reboot… 😥
The third is just so good. One of my favourite games ever.
The fourth, as a crackdown fan you'd think I'd like it, but I just couldn't get into it. The series really fell from grace with four for me, surprisingly I thought Gat out of Hell was really fun, much better than four and it really should be judged for what it was, a short side game in the series.
100% The Third. One of my first Platinums on PS3.
2 for me. So much random fun stuffs to find. From a graveyard sex dungeon to a floaty rabbit. And flashing people in a flasher mac never gets old.
2 by far. Best sound track and best story
Definitely Saints Row 2. The first game is a classic but it's rough around the edges, Saints Row 2 seemed to hit the perfect balance and the game was still centered around the original thug/gang storyline. Saints Row 3 is a ton of fun but that's when the games started to feel like a parody of themselves, and everything was just really over the top, with the storyline being something completely different and ridiculous. By the time we get to the 4'th game and Gat Out of Hell, the series doesn't even resemble what it used to be. I had some fun with them, but the first 3 are the only ones I would really go back to.
SR2 is my favorite, however SR3 is the only other SR game I have played, PS3. The 1st looks cool but it never came to PS as was planned, and SR4 and Gat does not interest me.
SR3 is fun like calling for a bus full of zombies, but SR2 has the better map, cast of characters, better story, and more fun.
I prefered 2 as that was more 'Arcade' GTA and still had its own identity. 3 went too overboard on the 'teenage' humour that finds 'smut' funny, and 4 took that concept too far for my preference.
Saints Row 2 was the best in terms of content and story... but it ran like garbage.
Saints Row 3 had a more optimized game engine and ran much better but it didn't have nearly the amount of stuff to do that SR2 did.
I would personally love to see a SR1+2 remaster, but I don't think the world today could handle the OG Saints.
Second is the best for me. The mini games were just as fun as the main game. Everything after the second lacked the wild mini games.
The Third is the best of the bunch imo, especially the Remastered one, which I just bought in a recent sale. It looks so good on Series X.
I think this poll should make a comeback soon after the reboot has released to see if it’s the best one yet or the worse, I can’t see this being in the middle.
The 1st game for me, The saints games seem to get silly. Getting the other gangs was the best on the first game.
I did like the 4th more than most people did, but the 3rd one was easily the best, followed by 2. 1 was awful lol
2, easily. It did everything the first did right, built on it and managed to differentiate the series enough from GTA. The first game I like a lot also but the second was just better all-around, gameplay and story. Didn't care much for 3 or 4, not bad games, not great. No interest at all in what I've seen of the reboot. Would've preferred a Saints Row 5 with the old gang that returns to something similar to 2.
@XxEvilAshxX
The world could certainly handle it. The problem is Western game devs live on Twitter, particularly a specific side of it that is perpetually offended.
The Third for me. I haven't played 1, and I enjoyed 2 a lot as while GTA4 moved to a more realistic and grounded (for GTA) style SR2 went the other way with a wackier style than San Andreas, but still not bonkers. A great game, and second place on my list.
The Third, however, built upon that with better tech, depth of mechanics, and even crazier missions, characters, and scenarios. I loved managing my gang, and territory, and modifying cool vehicles. I really need to pick up the remastered version one day.
I liked SRIV a lot, and I have to give it to them for really mixing up the formula with an off the wall Alien invasion storyline. The powers were really fun to use, but I felt it was lacking in a few places compared to 3. The powers were great fun, but made weapons, and especially vehicles, obsolete. The cool car customisation mechanic was still there, but why drive when, by end game, you could run at 200 miles an hour and leap tall buildings?
3 was great, but I also loved 4 and GooH. They could had easily branched this series 100% into the superhero realm, given how hot Superhero properties are these days, I think it would had been the perfect direction to take.
