Ahead of a relatively quiet fall season, we were just thinking about our favourite games of the year so far. Typically, we'd reserve this sort of discussion for later in the year, but given how front-heavy 2022 is shaping up to be — after yet more delays — we've already started thinking about GOTY contenders.
Elden Ring is a huge one of course, and it's certainly on our list at this point as we thoroughly enjoyed our time with FromSoftware's latest RPG. We also have to give a huge shout out to As Dusk Falls, which surprised us with its deep, engrossing storyline.
So, when it comes to Xbox releases (first or third party, along as it's on Xbox) what is your GOTY so far? Out of everything that's dropped in 2022, what could you see yourself voting for come the Holiday season?
If you're still looking at a big upcoming 2022 release as a potential GOTY (are there any left?!), or we've missed your current GOTY, feel free to drop that down in the comments.
Vote in the poll and let us know!

I'd have to say Triangle Strategy, Tunic, and Shredder's Revenge are my top 3. All very different from each other and very "old school" in their own right. I'll gladly take more games like those any day of the week.
Out of that entire list I've played powerwash simulator and Shredders revenge, went for Shredders revenge, such a great game
Elden Ring and it really isn’t close. Wasn’t a choice but I was honestly was a bit disappointed with Horizon Forbidden West. Just seemed too safe and more of the same. Elden Ring absolutely deserves all the praise it gets.
Ooof, I've played a sum total of 2 of those games on that list. Guess you can count me out of GOTY voting. This year was about the backlog and Gamepass games.
I will go for xenoblade. Regarding elden ring although I have not finish it yet I am far into (level 120+) and I don't understand all the hype about it. As a souls game I would say it is easily the weakest of all. The formula works much better on a smaller scale (altough I like to fight on horse)
I've played very few games that came out this year so far; even fewer that I actually enjoyed. Sooo... it's PowerWash Simulator, then Shredder's Revenge.
Terrible year for games.
It's down to three games for me so far and it's too hard to choose one.
1, Elden Ring
2, Xenoblade chronicles 3
3, Horizon Forbidden West
Pretty certain God of war Ragnarok, Pokémon scarlet and Soul Hackers 2 will also be up there as well.
Any of those for game of the year, can't see any other games winning it.
Elden Ring is the game of the year, as it is consist of madness level labor and creativity.
@Chaudy depends what system(s) you play on.
I own all three and this year has been decent with more to come, but I also like JRPG's which I understand most other people don't so for them it might be a bad year as well.
This is a hypothetical of course, because Elden Ring did release, but honestly imagine it didn't come out this year... this has not been one of the great years in gaming, particularly if you're a single-console gamer. There's a good mix over the three big consoles but any one of them alone has not had a great release schedule.
Out of this list i only played Tiny Tina, As Dusk Falls and Lego Star Wars. I'm currently playing Elden Ring, but that won't be my game of the year. I think it's a good game, even though i'm not into souls games or challenging games generally, but personally i don't see it as my favorite game of the year. On Xbox side with this list i would pick Lego Star Wars. My actual personal favorite game of the year is Horizon Forbidden West, which is exactly what I am looking for in a game.
But yeah it's been an okish year of gaming until now, especially with all the delays. Let's hope next year we will see less delays
Elden Ring, nothing that’s released this year has even come close imo. Shredders Revenge was nice but it was never gonna take the top spot over Elden Ring for me.
First the Quarry, second cult of the lamb, third could be Elden Ring or GTA V, I never played it before and my friends gifted me the next gen version of GTA V, the story is really fun so far
Elden Ring....Only Forbidden West comes close for me. Let's see when/if God of War releases in November if they get any competition. I did enjoy the XSX version of Cyberpunk but that isn't even listed.
What a barren year 2022 has been for AAA releases in general. Shredder's Revenge was enjoyable for the couple of evenings it lasted, and have enjoyed playing some older games on GamePass, but as far as new 2022 releases there isn't much. Next year looking promising tough given all the delays.
I've only bought FF Origin and Sonic Origins this year so far on Xbox so I'll go for FF Origin. If DLC expansions counts then FH5 Hot Wheels for sure.
Across all platforms, top 3 so far would probably be:
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 3
2. Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes
3. Portal Companion Collection
Switch this year is insanely good.
There's not even competition on Xbox. But to be honest, even if stalker 2, starfield, redfall, hell blade 2, or any others you care to mention...came out this year, Elden ring would still be a clear winner for me.
Elden ring is just a game that keeps on giving...keeps on growing. It has so many layers to it. 100hrs in and nearly every play through has revealed something new. They've literally found the ingredients of what made the demon/dark souls games so addicting in their gameplay loop...and combined it with the openness and sense of rewarding exploration of Zelda breath of the wild. In doing so they've removed all the frustrating aspects of the souls games...and created a game that consistently rewarding.
This game will be in talks for game of the generation, let alone game of the year.
I'm really looking forward to God of War but, though the story may be tighter, I honestly can't see it coming close to stealing GOTY from Elden ring. And that's probably its best hope of competition this year.
Went for Powerwash Simulator but it clearly is Kirby and the Forgotten Land overall for me, pretty much the only game I played to the end on Switch this year. It's ***** digital prozac.
Chose Elden Ring because it was and continues to be sublime…basically it’s like a ‘best of’ souls game, with everything they’ve learnt previously, plus lots of stuff extra goodness. Have you guys played Cult of the Lamb though? That game is full of fun stuff to do! Definitely better than some of the stuff on the list here
Tunic hands down.
Then maybe Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Horizon Forbidden West.
Runners up: Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes, Shadow Warrior 3, and Pokemon Legends Arceus.
this year games are quite weak. for me AI The Somnium Files -Nirvana Initiative- is the best this year
Elden Ring does feel like a boring choice, but it really is the best this year.
Also very good games for me include: TMNT:Shredders Revenge, As Dusk Falls, Two Point Campus and Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Yet to play the new AI:Somnium Files, Mario Football, Fire Emblem Warriors and Tunic.
Sadly, there hasn't been a single game on XBOX that I wanted to play yet in 2022.
For me its The Ascent, but I went for Trek To Yomi on the list.
Kirby 😂 Followed by Sea of Thieves... this year has been a weak showing for Xbox. I did enjoy the heck out of Dying Light 2 though, so that'd be choice from among the listed options, followed by Shredder's Revenge.
Nothing for me of goty quality.
I don’t do Elden Ring, so can’t say.
HFW was ok, to safe, similar.
Xbox are not playing/releasing this year.
Nintendo safe again not much.
Not a great gaming year really.
Cult of the Lamb probably. Enjoying it immensely.
I had to go with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands as I really don't enjoy FromSoftwares games - not just the 'game-play' loop, but also the lack of quality and polish. Tiny Tina isn't the 'best' either but at least its performance is much more consistent and the game-play loop is a lot of fun...
All this says to me is that this year seems to be hit hard for 'big games' releasing that you instantly think will make for a memorable Game of the Year awards show - now it seems that these shows will be quite predictable and not too much competition to make it interesting.
Globally, its been a 'difficult' year with most of the games we 'expected' to compete with Elden Ring ending up being delayed into 2023. I don't think 2022 will go down in history in terms of games, regardless of your 'preferences, platforms and/or biases'...
Some decent games have released and the rest of the year looks 'decent' too, even if it's not as 'exciting' as other years. Maybe one of the new games will surprise me...
@Dezzy70 it’s been pretty dire on both platforms. I agree with what you say about HFW. I’ve not played it yet, thought the first was good, not great and I’ve been watching a friend play the second, it looks like exactly the same game with slightly better graphics. Kind of lowered my interest in it tbh.
Sniper Elite 5 for me, although it’s admittedly a flawed game (too generic with annoying environmental travel restrictions).
But anytime you get a chance to kill some fascists, well, it’s a good day in the neighborhood.
🤫
@Fenbops
All platforms for me are not having a great 2022 even third party.
We have GOWR November so let’s see how that is.
We also have Pokémon as well later in the year.
Let’s hope for a better 2023.
Where's the masterpiece CrossfireX?
This year for gaming has not been exciting for me with the constant delays to 2023, Xbox not having first party exclusives and having no interest in any of the PS exclusives. The only game I actually want is The Callisto Protocol which is coming out in December, meaning it wont be eligible for GOTY this year.
My game of the year so far would have to be Elden Ring despite not finishing it.
Where’s the option for “other”? Even though it’s barely been out a week I’m tempted to say Cult of the lamb which I currently can’t stop playing! Btw where’s your review?
Elden Ring was good, From Software games still lack decent narratives, dialogue and interesting npc's in my opinion. If you could mix Witcher lore/characters/dialogue with Souls' games combat and character levelling then you'd be on to a GOAT game for sure.
I haven't gotten to Horizon Forbidden West or Dying Light 2 yet #backlog. My favourite game that I've played this year is Disco Elysium hands down.
Elden ring! I don't know if it's my favourite from software game yet (I will probably take a while before I decide that) but it's very clearly my goty and I'm highly doubtful anything will get close.
But my other favourites would be Nobody saves the world, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Legends Arceus and Citizen Sleeper.
I'm still yet to play Neon White, Cult of the Lamb TMNT and three hopes.
TMNT: Shredders Revenge without a doubt. That game was just perfect.
Neon White is the best game this year.
Elden Ring, without any doubt. I spent around 300 hours spread over several months playing exclusively that game over two different playthroughs. I will no doubt revisit it at some point later in the year, waiting to see what their DLC plans look like.
I strongly suspect that Splatoon 3 on Switch will become my number 2 once that’s released next month.
Elden Ring needs to come to gamepass before the DLC.
Elden Ring. It’s a pure 10/10 game and those are rare and wonderful beasts, my friends.
Current Top 20 Games 2022

Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Blossom Tales 2
Rollerdrome
Strange Horticulture
As Dusk Falls
I have yet to try any of those, so I'll just say Stray. 🐈 Meow there.
Elden Ring has no rival this year, it's just on another level, nothing comes even close.
Elden Ring is great, but this year it’s all about the turtles.
@Kezelpaso Add the "Other" option! And Sonic Origins...
To have a definitive "GOTY" is hard to decide. Are we going by what sold the most? What got the best scores, across the board? What game we, as individuals, played the most? Etc. Also, there should be multiple GOTYs. GOTY for shooters, arpgs, platformers, racers, etc.
Imagine someone asking best drink of the year. "Are we talking alcoholic? Soft? Juice? The amount we've drank, etc?"
"Yes"
"I guess water"
Horizon forbidden west
Elden Ring without doubt; absolutely brilliant game. Otherwise has felt pretty poor this year on the Xbox although As Dusk Falls and Cult of the Lamb are both enjoyable.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 all the way for me. Game barely came out and I'm close to 100hrs spent in it. Can't remember the last time I was this hooked on a game.
I enjoyed As Dusk Falls.
Very different from what I usually play and enjoyed it.
I loved the choices, the twisty turny story, the graphical style and the amazing soundtrack.
But we need more from xbox game studio publishing.
Fortunately for xbox, elden ring came out this year. Without it, theres no way goty could be an xbox title, as theres been so little of note on the platform. Were only 2/3 of the way through the year, but you can have this conversation on an xbox site as we know theres little more to come.
I'm still looking forward to plauge tale 2 and the callisto protocol, but I dont think they will be contenders, just a reason for me to power up the series x!
Much as I rate other games that will be considered, and I expect GOW to give it some competition, Elden Ring has to be a shoe in for the title. Not many games shift expectations as much as that title, and I think it will be a worthy winner. I didnt vote here though as I played it on another system.
1) Xenoblade Chronicles 3
2) Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
3) Triangle Strategy
4) Elden Ring
5) Kirby and the Forgotten Land
I haven't played every notable new release this year (HFW and Nirvana Initative are going to have to wait), but those would be my top five this year. Switch is absolutely on fire at the moment.
Shredders Revenge for me. Superb. Great game and full of nostalgia. Elden Ring is one of the dullest games I have played this year. I kind of get it but is it a game that’s really up there with some of the very best? Not even close for me. Loads of aesthetic quality but a total lack of substance. Give me Cowabunga any day of the week!
Elden Ring is simply a masterpiece. Excellent graphics, excellent combat, huge customization options for any build you want, incredible boss battles and set pieces and a whole lot of lore. I really like how everyone's sense of discovery & approach is different, but if you watch Carbot Animation's take on YouTube, it's hilarious how we all go through the same little bita of frustrating pieces 😂😂
@jarvismp yeah but did you beat the game or nah?
@Titntin yeah agree, Xbox missed the mark. 3rd party devs are holding up the console this year.
@ozkrmz Ragnorok will def take GOTY!!
As a gamepass ultimate subscriber (till December 2023) I say "I'll be more than happy to see Elden Ring in gamepass.
Elden ring and shredders revenge.
Honorable mention for nobody saves the world.
Not my bag, but it was a good game.
Elden Ring would probably be one of my last choices to be honest.
@Kilamanjaro still go back now and again. It’s just not for me. Like I said, I get why some will love it but it just doesn’t feel that exciting or enthralling to me.
@jarvismp totally fair, and TMNT is excellent too
@Sam_TSM Tunic started off great & then the puzzles towards the end game just became ridiculous for the true ending
@Kilamanjaro Agree on that. Started well and just fell away which was a shame. Still a decent title but lost its way a bit.
@sjbsixpack Hopefully...
