Re: Ubisoft's Splinter Cell Remake Will 'Update The Story' For Modern Audiences

Richnj

@Grail_Quest I get people not wanting things to change, but that doesn't mean they have to stay the same either.

Friendly reminder that they did change Bond and people raged about it. And now nobody gives two sh*ts about a blonde Bond. And the outrage looks petty in retrospect.

There's more to these character than their hair or skin colour. Idris Elba has more Bond energy and than many white guys. No one's picking Danny DeVito over Elba as their next Bond just to keep a skin tone consistent.

Re: Xbox's 'Improved' Elite Series 2 Controller Is Getting Mixed Feedback So Far

Richnj

Well, I'm not surprised. Despite the very clear design flaws (face buttons not depressing enough to make full contact with the connectors), the Elite v2 had a lot of good reviews and praise.

The short of it is that for whatever reason, most people just didn't encounter the fault, and aren't techy enough to test for, and find, the fault.

The most annoying aspect of the whole thing, is that the Elite pads are mostly fantastic. And the face button issue would have been a really easy and cheap fix. There's no excuse for not fixing it.

Re: GTA 6 Footage Appears To Leak Online, 90 Different Videos

Richnj

@Dsswoosh This definition would completely fly in the face of both the woke and anti-woke definitions.

Woke has been attached to brand new IPs and entries that didn't replace characters with a more diverse cast and it has been attached to GTA 6 just for having a female Latino lead.

You can't be the create your own definition outside of its usage. This definition seems to be cobbled together just to walk the line.

Re: Digital Foundry Says Halo Infinite Split-Screen Is 'Excellent', 343 Declines To Comment

Richnj

Oh, and to get ahead of all the BS.

The single screen version of Halo Infinite on Xbone also runs at 540p and sub 30fps. So the notions that it's not good enough for those users, or that it's a target that 343i isn't happy with, is nonsense.

It's already the reality on Xbone so trying to give the impression that these are exclusive to split screen and is unacceptable, is disingenuous.

Re: Halo Infinite Players Discover Split-Screen Exploit On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@Acurisur @BAMozzy But objecting to XBox One Split screen because of 540p and sub 30fps, and lower asset quality, is inconsistent, Single screen play, a finished mode, is also capable of these figures on these consoles. So the whole idea that these players won't accept these figures or that releasing a game in this state is just unacceptable, is just a flat out lie.

"On Xbox One S, Halo Infinite makes a number of visual compromises to maintain its target frame rate of 30 frames per second. Among the various downgrades though, like lower quality assets and lighting, players on the Xbox One S will find the game scaling down to 540p regularly. In all, Digital Foundry writer and producer John Linneman called the Xbox One S version of Halo Infinite a “Switch port of an Xbox One X game.” However, Linneman later said that this was a good thing because, while the game was pushing the One S to its limit, it was still playable.

Also going against the Xbox One S version of Halo Infinite is the game’s overall performance. While both the Xbox One X and One S run Halo Infinite at 30 fps, the latter has additional issues that make the game feel worse overall. According to Digital Foundry’s testing, frame-time on the One S version jumps around constantly, producing a slight stuttering effect that, overall, makes for a worse experience."

And again, I have to stress, it's weird that you are deciding for XBox One VCR players what is acceptable. If they don't find it acceptable, they can just not play it, right?. If you personally don't like the performance, either get a better xbox, play it online, or just play single player.

Why is "you guys can't have it, because I don't like the results" a thing?

Re: Phil Spencer Passionately Defends Xbox Game Pass Over Call Of Duty Concerns

Richnj

@fizban3332 Exactly. We've seen what Sony thinks about sub services. Primarily, that big AAA titles shouldn't release day and date on them in order to preserve the massive income on premium launch titles, that comes from millions spent to cause hype and FOMO.

Releasing their own titles after a delay, paying to keep games off of Game Pass but not Xbox, and this whole drama.

Sony do not want to compete with Game Pass on even terms, and would rather pay to undermine both services.

Re: Halo Infinite Players Discover Split-Screen Exploit On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@BAMozzy Well we're just moving goal posts at this point. We've gone from "it just wouldn't run" to "well, this mode that I'm never going to play, doesn't run well enough to my personal standards, so I've decided that nobody wants to play it like that". As DF said, this proves the theory that the VCR just couldn't handle it is wrong.

We aren't even talking about 540p sub 30fps being just how the game runs in general, we are talking about how it runs in split screen on the Xbox One VCR. It's a fraction, of a fraction, of a fraction, of a fraction. We're justifying the removal of a mode for Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One X and S, because a few people might play the game on VCR, and some may even play it in split screen, where maybe half of them might complain about Switch graphics.

Which is total BS when you consider how well the game runs on an Xbox Series X in 4 player split screen. The VCR split screen mode may become a funny meme (we all remember Craig), but the XSX split screen would end up being the star of the show here. All in all, the inclusion of the mode would be praised, and the performance on VCR would be a footnote.

Re: Halo Infinite Players Discover Split-Screen Exploit On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@BAMozzy It's an unfinished mode, where the low res and frames were expected, and the other issues were noted as problems on the Series X version (as in, not exclusive to the Xbox VCR version). The original claims were that the VCR couldn't run the mode, not that the mode couldn't have bugs in any version.

Digital Foundry, the guys who obsess over details like res and frames, opened with "turns out, split screen works really well on XBox One VCR". They were really positive about the mode in its current (unfinished) form.

But considering how you've said "I couldn't care less about Local co-op" why would you be upset that XBox One VCR players got to play the game in a worse state than you need to?

I mean, you also banged on about showing you it running 2 players playing at the same time, which I've done, you still aren't happy.

And made unnreasonable requests like "with few frame drops", because you want an open world Halo to run smoother than any other Halo in split screen, and you somehow expected it to come from unfinished code.

It seems like there's another reason you are so against the mode, besides the stated reasons.

"They'd be ridiculed, heavily criticised and destroyed the franchise!"

Unlike right now, where they canceled split screen on all versions, in all forms, and not once were ridiculed, heavily criticised, or labeled the destroyer of the franchise.

Re: Resident Evil 4 Remake Adds PS4 Version, But No Sign Of Xbox One

Richnj

@Tharsman Most of those early gen differences were down to the required Kinect support, which is one of the reasons it was dropped, and doing so allowed some games to boost performance.

The most likely explanation here is purely that the PS5 and both xbox gens don't have 100m+ units, making the PS4 still a very attractive market to cater to.

This news does mean that I'll probably get the PS4 version in the first instance, and play the PS5 and XBox versions years from now on a re-play (like how I plan to play the Calisto game).

Re: Reaction: GoldenEye Is Finally Coming To Xbox, But It's A Rare Whiffed Shot For 007

Richnj

@Banjo- Everything about TLOU pt 1 screamed remaster, and I was proven right about that. Everything about Goldeneye screams ROM dump, and I guess digital foundry might be our first word on the matter.

For what it's worth, it looks like a nice ROM dump. Something similar to the OG Xbox BC games. They are ROM dumps but use MS' emulation software to massively improve the presentation and performance. The fact that this title is coming to Rare Replay is also a point in the emulation column, since almost all those titles are also just emulated.

Re: Xbox Issues Statement About Lack Of Online Multiplayer In GoldenEye 007

Richnj

I look forward to ten years from now when Rare employees explain that they could only get Goldeneye on the condition that they had to basically use the same version (ROM dump) as Nintendo.

I'm still excited to play it, but this is a huge let down and disservice to the game. After 25 years being locked on N64, it deserved a lot of love before launching.

Re: GoldenEye 007 Reportedly Won't Include Online Multiplayer On Xbox

Richnj

@StylesT This would be more about allowing friends and communities to arrange MP sessions, than it would about keeping an active online population.

@J_Mo_Money That would be a good explanation, if these were both ROM dumps.

And they've been calling it a remaster. Either the xbox is also getting a ROM dump and can't do online MP, or it's a remaster and has no excuse for not including the feature.

Re: Ubisoft Confirms 'Big AAA' Games Will Be $70 Moving Forward

Richnj

I'd defend up to $100 games, but not while they are carved up and sold off in tiny little chunks with more thought going in to how to stock a digital store of useless items.

Any game that has any kind of in game digital store is automatically not worth more than £20.

Re: Bonnie Ross, The Head Of Halo, Is Leaving 343 Industries And Microsoft

Richnj

@SpacemanJupiter She can be the cause and there not be a magical fix.

Since she founded and ran the studio. The people who helped make all the big decisions, and failed to get their teams to hit deadlines or push in the right design directions, were hired by her. And after each failure, she failed to get the studio in to shape. She caused this situation.

And after 10 years and 3 mainline releases (along side other priducts), the studio is probably still a mess, and many of the hires still sitting in places they don't belong, it would take a firm hand, and at least a few years, to correct all the issues that Ross let stay. Whether the new bosses have that in them or not is to be seen. Not a magical fix.

But it's a better chance than her staying.

Re: Microsoft Announces 343 Industries Leadership Team Restructure

Richnj

@GuyinPA75 I spent years on Waypoint trying to highlight the issues Halo would face with the direction it was taking (and unfortunately, was completely right) and we'd get so much push back from people like Snickerdoodle.

And now I've just read that they made them an actual 343i employee in 2019? It's no wonder that 343i don't understand the community when these are the people in charge of managing the community.

Re: Poll: Did You Ever Buy The 'Chatpad' For Your Xbox Controller?

Richnj

Can't vote because I have one on both my 360 and Xbone.

It's actually a really good piece of kit. Naming folders, sending in chat Halo MCC messages, searching for games. It comes in handy a lot more than you'd realise. It's only when I'm doing stuff on my partner or son's xbox that Inotice and then hate not having one on there.

Typing with the analogue sticks is a pain in comparison.

In fact, I think MS should just go ahead and incorporate chatpads as a base feature in to their Series 2 pads (along with gyro). If devs could rely on the feature being there, they could actual make good use out of it. We could even have spelling based games for kids to practice their spelling. It would be great.

Re: Here's Your First Look At Xbox's New Home UI In Motion

Richnj

Game Pass should be one tile, and nothing more. Everything being displayed here for GP can be displayed within that one tile once entered. That would be empowering the player, rather than overwhelm them.

This is just a lot going on and I'm absorbing none of it.

Re: Xbox & PlayStation Stuck In 'Complicated' Call Of Duty Situation, Says Geoff Keighley

Richnj

The Starfield thing is inconsistent.

Offering a three year parity deal and not a "COD will be xbox exclusive after three years" deal, is not inconsistent.

Deals need end dates.

Edit: "The thing I've always wondered: If COD is part of Game Pass on Xbox but $70 on PlayStation, how much should that be factored into the discussion around "exclusivity"?"

The same can be said for Sony blocking Game Pass. Preventing release on a platform/service is the definition of exclusivity.

Re: PSA: Now's Probably A Good Time To Use 'Energy Saver' Mode On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@lokozar Given recent news, I have concluded you are right. I am going to turn off my xbox so that it offsets Liz Truss unbanning fracking.

@NEStalgia "But turn your Xbox off and help save the world! How about: tear down every office building, replace them with shopping at a nearly walkable distance everywhere, and end the idea of travel vacations and non-essential business travel....then we can talk about Xbox power save all you'd like. "

I love this.

Re: PlayStation Boss Heavily Criticises Xbox For 'Inadquate' Call Of Duty Offer

Richnj

So he was ok with taking Spider-Man, and is ok with MS taking;

Wolfenstein
Doom
Rage
Elder Scrolls
Fallout
Starfield
Prey
Dishonored
Evil Within
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro
Tony Hawks Pro Skater
and god knows what else,

But not COD?, that's curious line to draw. If the "failed to take account of the impact on our gamers" is the reason, and not the obscene amount of money COD makes on PS consoles, why is it limited to COD?

Re: PSA: Now's Probably A Good Time To Use 'Energy Saver' Mode On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@lokozar "For example, here, for years now, energy companies switch to renewable energy sources, not because they have to, but because there is growing demand for it"

Really?, you sure it had nothing to do with renewables becoming cheaper than fossil fuels this last decade?

Because here's the bottom line in this debate. If fossil fuels were still much cheaper than renewables, companies would still push that product harder, and your average person would probably pick it because it benefited them more. Not always out of pure selfishness, but because life is hard already, and sometimes they don't always have the luxury to half freeze to death for the sake of the planet.

We can definitely agree that convincing individuals that recycling and renewables are the best option, but getting them to put it in to practice on a personal level is hard and more or less pointless in comparison to changing the source of the problems.

Edit: renewable energy is actually a perfect example of what I'm talking about. It would be a lot more effective to force all energy companies over to renewable than it would to convince billions of people to turn off the electronics.

Re: PSA: Now's Probably A Good Time To Use 'Energy Saver' Mode On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@lokozar I'm saying that advocating for individuals to change, changes nothing.

Adding Sh*t to a sh*t pile doesn't change the fact that what you have in front of you is a sh*t pile. It doesn't make things better, but you're not making the sh*t pile go away either. You telling individuals to stop pooping there while massive lorries drive right past you isn't preventing the sh*t pile, it's just making it harder for individuals to find a place to go to the bathroom.

Re: PSA: Now's Probably A Good Time To Use 'Energy Saver' Mode On Xbox Series X|S

Richnj

@lokozar "Multiply the 13 Watts by 16 million. It sums up."

I actually really disagree with this more.

We could all live using zero electricity. And we could all recycle absolutely everything. But you'd still have corporations burning fossil fuels and dumping waste in to our waters like they own the place.

Everything you have done is great, but we still ended up with an energy crisis and sewage water. The change needs to come from the top and to the way society is structured.

The products we use need to be sustainable in and of themselves, and not the way in which we use them.
