Update: Well, we've definitely got confirmation now! A Microsoft spokesperson revealed "no plans" to bring online multiplayer to GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass earlier today in a statement:
Original story: There's been some confusion today about whether GoldenEye 007's Xbox port will include online multiplayer or not, and unfortunately it looks like the answer is that it'll be restricted to four-player local multiplayer alone.
In an article on the official James Bond website, it's mentioned that online play will be "exclusive" to the Nintendo Switch version, appearing to confirm that Xbox won't benefit from any online features at all:
"Exclusive to the new Switch version of the 1997 title will be online play, allowing 007 fans across the world to take part in the popular four person multiplayer mode."
The article itself has been changed a few times today, so there's a chance it could be wrong, but Rare has been promoting the game on the Xbox website without saying anything about online multiplayer, so don't get your hopes up.
It's a bit of a disappointment, then, but maybe it could be patched in at a later date? Who knows...
Sad about this? Let us know down in the comments below.

Yikes! That's pretty galling!
This makes zero sense.
Unless there was another reason, like Nintendo blocking it as part of the deal to get it released at all, or MS just not wanting to support a MP game that wasn't a live service.
Yeah this is complete nonsense, $500 console from a trillion dollar company that owns RARE and we can't even get feature parity. Really lazy and disappointing.
@Richnj It's because NSO has the feature of remote like play for their multiplayer on emulated games. It's why SNES games like mario kart ect can do online multiplayer because there are no servers. Xbox doesnt have that type of feature, neither does PS4. So that probably explains why.
Nintendo trickery 🤪 I’m just pleased we are getting it! I guess we’ll be able to purchase the game on Xbox but it’ll switch online only for Nintendo.
@Sk8boyP also, MS may own Rare but they dont own the rights to this game.
GOOSEBUMPS HEARING THAT MUSIC AGAIN 🎶🥰
Let's be honest it would be dead after a few days anyway...boot it up abit of Nostalgia but then the realisation of how dated it is
@StylesT This would be more about allowing friends and communities to arrange MP sessions, than it would about keeping an active online population.
@J_Mo_Money That would be a good explanation, if these were both ROM dumps.
And they've been calling it a remaster. Either the xbox is also getting a ROM dump and can't do online MP, or it's a remaster and has no excuse for not including the feature.
If this is the case then it's a sign that this is a really low effort port. I'm hoping that something so anticipated won't just be a hastily done upscale emulation job. There's a lot of dedicated fans that know this game inside and out.
@Richnj Switch is the N64 rom version and Xbox has the remastered XBLA version with 4k textures 16:9 ect. There was no online MP servers for that version so they would have to build it from scratch. I can understand why they wouldn't bother lol.
I never thought I'd see the day when Nintendo is the console with the best onlin - A communication error has occurred.
Pretty cool. Looking forward to the nostalgia trip
@Richnj It's a remaster not a remake. Rare isn't Naughty Dog. They don't just remake the game with the multipla--- oh, what nvm. At least it's cheap/free and not $70 to have the online stripped out
Seriously though the original N64 game never had online (N64 itself didn't.) Even the remaster is still based on the ROM. To make it online they'd have to build the online functionality from scratch (and they probably can't even recompile the game anymore, it's probably some emulation layer and updated assets added to give the remaster.) Switch has a sort of emulated online thing built into the platform for retro ROMs, bridging the local multiplayer to an online service.
@NEStalgia THIS
@J_Mo_Money @NEStalgia Remasters can have online MP. Perfect Dark and and Halo CE didn't have online MP in their orginal releases either.
@J_Mo_Money this is most likely the reason
@J_Mo_Money actually I doubt it's the remaster version
Here is why.
1 they say faithfully recreated
2. It has the Rare replay abnner
3. The intro they used for the trailer for the Xbox version is not the remastered version. It's a high res version of the original
@Richnj I have not seen anything official today say it's a remaster. The tweet says faithfully recreated and the trailer has the og intro in high res not the leaked intro that is the remake.
I'm not sure why but i'm kind of furious about it. An xbox first party studio creating MORE content for another console? We're already slim on exclusive content this year. At this rate there will be no reason at all to buy an Xbox. I'll buy their competitors instead, and get more from Xbox studios while I'm at it
@Jbuggydroid "Microsoft also confirmed news today (September 13) that a 4K resolution remaster is on its way to Xbox’s Game Pass."
https://www.007.com/goldeneye-007-coming-to-nintendo-switch-online-xbox-gamepass/
Edit: and doing the least amount of work for a highly anticipated release, 25 years in the making, is very deserving of criticism.
@Reptilio Xbox doesn't own the rights to this game, similar to how Xbox owns the rights to the 1st Sunset Overdrive but Insomniac/Sony do not. Also, being "furious" over something this trivial? Really?
@Reptilio nobody created "more" content for anything. The Switch is going to run the ROM on an emulator with online functionality. The game itself is unchanged.
@NEStalgia your comment #12 sums up my weekend with splatoon 3 lol
Then what is the point of releasing it on Xbox Gamepass and the console at all? No online multiplayer means a big L for Xbox. They better get it at some point ridiculous that they won’t to begin with.
@StylesT false
@J_Mo_Money @carck
Frustrated is better word. But year, the fact of the matter is Rare is an xbox studio. They put the work into creating this for modern consoles, and provided a competing console with more functionality.
Honestly I think most gamers will install it, give it a go, realise how badly it's aged and never play it again. Not the biggest loss (can you lose something you don't have) /jk
Really hope this gets patched in; kind of a no-brainer especially on Gamepass. I get that the original fun of the game was the split screen but come on… still I get it for free and can have the guys over for some local… guess that will have to do for now!
@Richnj well that's confusing cause the screenshots that have been shared of the Xbox version are straight up from the N64 version but higher resolution.
Edit .. got confused with remaster and remake lol. My bad
As it should be. This game is meant for splitscreen gaming with everyone in the same room.
@Reptilio no bro. This is almost zero work. It’s literally an emulator running a rom. The emulator on the switch (developed by nintendo) allows for online play. That’s about it
@Carck nah bruh, they could've provided the same functionality for xbox. That's about it.
No multiplayer, no care. DOA for me.
Yet another L for Xbox in a generation of Ls.
@Jbuggydroid Ha, yeah, a lot of people confuse those. Don't worry about it lol.
That statement implies that the Switch version is the ropey 1997 release whereas the Xbox version is 4k60 and therefore not the same.
@Reptilio it is nintendo providing the feature. Who are you talking about? You think there’s enough people interested in playing a shoddy 1997 shooter online to warrant extra development and resources? It’s not surprising
Honestly all I care about is the single player campaign so no loss for me.
@Tasuki Exactly!
@Richnj The Halo CE PC version did which is probably what they used for MCC. IDK about perfect dark but it's their own IP and they probably could rebuild it with a lot less issues. This isn't their IP and modifying it almost certainly breaks the licensing.
So i understand now why it doesn't have multiplayer but it's still disappointing. I'll likely go through the campaign once and that's all she wrote. If it had MP i would have played it with buddies to see how it goes. Ah well, was excited, got disappointed, will give it a go and hopefully enjoy it.
Microsoft seems like they are trying to implode over the last year.
The James Bond site doesn't mention any multiplayer mode for Xbox but the Xbox site does specifically mention local multiplayer. Probably, online modes are added later but I'm not worried about that in this particular game. It's funny that the worst online service (Nintendo's) is going to add an online mode but I can't wait to see how much input lag is added to the rented N64 rom. I could try it myself as I have the Switch Lite but give me the remastered campaign and local multiplayer any day.
@Jbuggydroid BUT they also wrote, "adding new features for the modern age of gaming", "widescreen", "4K"... (on Xbox site) so yes, it's a remaster. The Xbox 360 remaster has some faces changed so I bet now everyone is going to check those details and see the features included and excluded in the Xbox One/Series remaster, but that will be when the new remaster is released. We don't know how much N64 and how much Xbox 360 it is yet.
This looks like emulation to me, so calling it a remaster seems inaccurate. It seems to be just an emulator with the output resolution set to 4K. The original game even had a 16:9 mode. Even using a high-res texture pack or more detailed models like you get on some N64 emulators it wouldn’t really class this as a remaster to me.
Still, it will be interesting to play it on the Xbox, although I still regularly play it on the N64 so I probably don’t want to get too used to smoother framerates and higher resolutions! 😅
no online no play....unless its a 100% remake ill pass on it the multiplayer is all i every played in the dorms.... its about the only feature i wanted. and i wont spend money on games on my switch unless made by nintendo or cant get anywhere else... splatoon 3 comes to mind.
I know it's disappointing for Xbox folks; but I think it's kind a nice for Nintendo to have a one-up this time.
People can scream "missed opportunity" all they want; but I bet NSO Expansion Pass subscriptions will blow through the roof just to be able to play this online. And Switch has...what...over 111 million units shipped at this point?! So it's not like the Switch is a niche system or anything.
@GamingFan4Lyf I think it'll be a fun romp for a few days but I dont see this having very long legs, which is why I'm glad its free on NSO and on game pass. I'm sure we'll forget all about it after a month or two.
@RadioHedgeFund Correct
@TheGrizMan Lol "Yet another L for Xbox in a generation of Ls." ok troll...
Guess I'll play the campaign on Xbox and multiplayer on Switch.
@Banjo- the N64 app and the other retro system apps on the switch have online baked in. Basically it's local multiplayer but you can do it online now. There is no online added to these games. They are basically emulators that enable the ability to do online.
It's prob the only way Nintendo would allow this to happen. Rumor is they are the reason the remake didn't come to light.
@Jbuggydroid So it's basically translating the offline multiplayer to an online environment. The online is always spotty on Nintendo consoles so I guess Goldeneye 007 won't be an exception. I could pay the expansion pack and see but I'm more excited about the campaign and local multiplayer, in this case.
Some Rare members admitted that Nintendo stopped the Xbox 360 remaster because they had the publishing rights until 2017. I'm sure that they would stop the Xbox One/Series remaster if they could, but they can't 👍👌.
While it's cool to see Goldeneye back, I can't say I planned on playing it online. That said, it is a bit ridiculous the Switch version will get it and not Xbox.
I was excited.
Now I won't even be bothering to download it.
Nor will I be buying it on my Switch.
@Banjo- I hope when the remaster does it comes to all consoles. Playing the one that got leaked was awesome. Being able to swap back and forth between old and new was nice.
No multiplayer AND its not the remake? I can't even think of an analogy to use cause i can't think of anything that makes that little sense
@Jbuggydroid Yes but the leaked remaster (Xbox 360 game) is hard to emulate even on modern PCs so I'm very excited to have this on Series X.
People are making this a big deal when it isn’t. All this is is how Nintendo Online’s emulator simulates multiplayer originally intended for local play. It’s baked into NO - not some “exclusive” new multiplayer suite. It’s literally just part of their emulation.
@awp69 Right, it's a rom with the same modes but Nintendo Online will look for online players instead of for additional controllers.
@Banjo- My PC built about 5 years ago does it flawlessly....
@InterceptorAlpha My Surface Laptop 4 (the high-end model) doesn't. I guess that ultra-thin laptops can't compete in gaming but I don't game on PC.
@Banjo- That's exactly right. A Surface I not a gaming machine. It is good for productivity, and even plenty of games.
However rule of thumb for emulation is your device needs to be 3-4x more powerful than what's being emulated. This includes CPU, GPU, RAM performance, etc.
@SplooshDmg "Everything about this release just seems kinda shoehorned together"
Not on the Nintendo side.
@GamingFan4Lyf Shoehorning it in is actually what Nintendo is doing. They’re basically putting the original code into an emulator. The “multiplayer” is already baked into that emulator (using the local MP ports). I don’t get why people don’t seem to understand this. It’s not like Rare went over and above to do something extra for Nintendo. They didn’t.
I wish articles like this one would make it clear that the Nintendo Online emulator is doing what it did for other N64 ports as well. Taking local MP and emulating it like people elsewhere are in the same room.
Ironic, since I'm playing it on Xbox. I hardly played the mp mode as a kid.
@SplooshDmg you can already emulate it on the PC. It even plays online as well
@awp69 I am well aware of how it is accomplished. That doesn't change the fact that GoldenEye is exactly as people will remember with the added benefit of having online play no matter how it was achieved.
I don't see how that's shoehorned on the Nintendo side.
Nintendo was able to add online multiplayer to a bunch of classic games at the emulation level. Kudos to Nintendo for accomplishing that and for doing whatever Nintendo did to get the game released - I am sure it was no easy feat as it probably required new license agreements for James Bond and agreements with Microsoft.
If any game deserves to have online play added - even if it wasn't added with any effort on Rare's side - it's GoldenEye.
It never had Online Multi-player and that was part of its charm - sitting around a TV together with friends having battles to 'silly o'clock' when you know you had work in a few hours but just had to play 1 more match....
With many people lamenting the lack of split-screen gaming options and a wealth of Online options that were built and designed around online play and is a very competitive market on Xbox, CoD, Halo, Doom, Fortnite, Battlefield etc etc, If any game doesn't need to add Online, its Goldeneye on the Xbox.
Switch is perhaps more understandable with its small screen when not docked so will benefit from online options but Xbox doesn't need Online. Sure it would be 'nice' for some, but its not true to the Goldeneye MP experience that made it what it was...
@InterceptorAlpha It has plenty of CPU and RAM power as it's the high-end model but not a proper gaming GPU because it's an ultra-thin laptop. I didn't get it for gaming because I play most games on Series X but I wanted to play the leaked Xbox 360 remaster. Now I'll play Goldeneye 007 like any other Rare Replay title on Series X.
As a side note, Series X/S can easily emulate Diddy Kong Racing via Retroarch, the only Rare game still in limbo. All the other Rare games are available on Xbox except the Donkey Kong games that are available on Wii U and Switch Online. However, Retroarch on Series X is not able to emulate the N64 version of Goldeneye 007 smoothly. Goldeneye 007 is an early N64 game but for some reason is a complex game.
@BartoxTharglod The James Bond site says that Xbox is getting a 4K remaster and the Xbox site says 4K, wide-screen and new gameplay features. I guess it's a new remaster.
@BAMozzy Unfortunately this argument relies on times not having changed.
Unfortunately they have.
Gone are the days that your friend come over and spend a week up staying the night playing games. These thing have to be scheduled now. Much like how I scheduled a party for Halo Infinite's release for split screen only to have to cancel it.
Most of the time we have to rely on online functions for those 20 minutes you and yours have to actually play together.
@StylesT you'd be foaming at the mouth if it said playstation instead of Nintendo lol
@BartoxTharglod I believe that's probably what it is just like the ps2 classics on PS4 it's an emulated rom with achievements , upscaling through the emulator & tweaked controls
@BartoxTharglod @Would_you_kindly You don't know that. It's just your own negative assumptions and/or hope. The official sites (James Bond and Xbox) say that it's a remaster.
@Banjo- why would I hope that , I'll be getting it free because I bought rare replay on sale that's just what it looks like to me 🤷♂️
@Would_you_kindly The MGM/Danjaq and Xbox sites can't be lying. It's a remaster with improved graphics, gameplay, controls and aspect ratio. Maybe we should wait for the Xbox game to be released before agreeing with someone that is calling the Xbox version "a rom dump" and "inferior version" on every thread... No? 😅
@InterceptorAlpha Times may of changed, but that's not the point - this is a faithful recreation of the Original game and keeping true to its original design and that includes the way the MP was designed and built.
Whether the times have changed or not, that also doesn't mean that a 25 yr old game with a 25 yr old design philosophy should offer something that wasn't part of what made Goldeneye, and its MP in particular, great! Part of that was because it was Split screen, because you all could see each others position by their view, all being in the same room together - that's what made the MP so great - more than the 'simplistic' MP maps/modes and game-play that has become far more complex in more ways than just 'visual' improvements...
Online 'Goldeneye' is not the same game, not the same experience - something is missing/lost from that. Whinging about a 25yr old game not offering something it 'never' had in the first place is absolutely ridiculous. It never had online so why expect it? This is what I and anyone else should 'expect' as that is what Goldeneye was.
Nintendo may feel they need to add it because their hardware may not be able to run the MP in 4 player split screen very well and also the screen size isn't conducive to 4 player FPS split screen combat - good luck on a Switch Lite!! Point is, Xbox is keeping the MP true to its original design and the way it was meant to be played intact so I really can't see why you are crying about the fact you can now get that experience on a modern Xbox. Its not as if you don't have a Plethora of Online MP FPS options built specifically for 'online' and for modern gamers - not those looking for a retro experience or get to play Classic games as they were designed to be played without some of the 'drawbacks'
Had good times playing couch Mp back in the day. Ngl, I wasn’t gonna revisit this because I’m 100% sure it hasn’t aged well
@Would_you_kindly Dont know how you work that out..but okay
@BartoxTharglod All good questions. Everything about this title has always been shrouded in mystery. Between ip holder politics, Nintendo involvement, and Rare being Rare, it's never really obvious why it has been treated as it has. And just when it looked dead and forgotten we get this new chapter!
@InterceptorAlpha @BAMozzy I may be wrong but I think Nintendo has it simply by default as a standard feature of their N64 emulator for multi controller games, not because they specifically did anything for this game. It's a platform feature, like quick resume on xb. It's just automatic for their service.
@BartoxTharglod What I am implying is that a portable based platform - Such as the switch with its 'relatively' weak hardware that's not only running the game, but an emulator too, may not be able to offer 4player Split Screen at a 'reasonable' frame rate - running it much like the N64 did which barely broke 20fps let alone at least 30fps and if you have a Switch Lite only, Its not exactly going to be much fun trying to play 4player split screen if all 4 players are trying to stare at a 'tiny' corner of a tiny screen. Its bad enough on Mario Kart when you only need to focus on the track direction.
I never said that the Switch version wouldn't have 'co-op' like the Original so miss out, I said they had a much bigger reason to add it than MS - especially as the Switch doesn't have as many online MP FPS type games it can offer by comparison too.
On the one hand, you have a 'modern' version built to run on Xbox hardware, running on a Series X with so much more CPU/GPU/RAM budget than the Switch. On top of that, its not likely to be connected to a tiny screen that people will have to share - each staring at their corner.
Therefore it benefits Nintendo more to add Online because its a Portable system first and foremost that is better suited to individual (not group) play. Whether co-op will run well enough or not, whether (some) can play docked or not, the fact is that the Switch is not that powerful and running through emulation too, I can't see frame rates being great let alone having much fun trying to play with 3 others camped around a Switch Lite and trying to see my little corner of the screen.
Xbox doesn't need to add Online to a game that was never designed for online gaming. It has the power to run multiple instances from different perspectives simultaneously and not plugged in to a 6" screen. Average in the UK is probably 48" so each player would get a 24" screen view!!
@NEStalgia whether they added it intentionally or by circumstances as a result of their 'emulation' software, it still doesn't change the fact that its better suited to the Switch for reasons I mentioned. You aren't going to get the Goldeneye MP experience on a Switch Lite or Portable mode because of screen size issue at the very least.
Xbox doesn't need to 'change' anything from the original experience because it has the 'hardware' to run 4 player split screen and generally plugged into a large TV to make 4 player Split screen gaming much easier, more comfortable and 'better' than the Original (better resolution, frame rates etc). Its also preserving that MP experience that EVERYONE remembers and loved. Its NOT the same online...
@BartoxTharglod I'm totally fine and very happy about this remaster that you call "rom dump" when it's Switch that's getting the "rom dump". You're the one that seems to be suffering a meltdown and that seems desperate to convince everyone about your assumptions on every thread. I just wanted to stop your deliberate misinformation based on your assumptions 😁.
Should have been cross platform between Nintendo and Xbox, but what do I know right. Happy this is coming out, and will play it on 00 Agent.
I should bring up that the reason the Switch version is online compatible is because the Nintendo Switch online N64 games are specifically designed to be online as part of the service. This is likely a direct port of the original with no added features, hence why Switch has online but Xbox doesn’t.
Yes the NSO version (that you can't buy) will include online multi-player just like it does for every other multiplayer NSO game. However, it will also use the outdated n64 controls. Good luck with that. I'll take xbox's dual stick solution over that any day. I also probably won't be playing it online anyway.
