The time has finally come! Rare has confirmed today that a "faithful recreation" of the N64 classic GoldenEye 007 is coming to Xbox Game Pass in the near future, although we don't have a date just yet.
You can check out the trailer above, which sadly doesn't show any gameplay, but Rare has stated that this version will feature achievements, a native 16:9 resolution at up to 4K Ultra HD and a smoother framerate, even in (up to four-player) splitscreen multiplayer. Plus, there are improved control options including dual analog stick support.
Update: We also now have a few screenshots to share, which you can find below:
In a bit of bad news, online multiplayer unfortunately won't be included in the Xbox version of GoldenEye 007 and will instead be exclusive to Nintendo Switch.
You might have also noticed a Rare Replay banner in the trailer, and that's because anyone who owns the digital version of Rare Replay will be given access to GoldenEye 007 for free, regardless of whether they have Game Pass or not.

OMG! And in Game Pass! My dream has come true!
Wow, this was my childhood! It’s the game that I obsessed with before and after school with my friends so much.
We’d all take turns going one another’s homes for breakfast and dinner before and after school for multiplayer.
Granted, the graphics haven’t aged well, but still one of my fondest memories of my video gaming time over the years.
Been meaning to get the N64 out of the cupboard to show my daughter, but just haven’t gotten around to it.
I guess now I don’t have to! Wow. Just wow.
It will be also on the NSO Service on Switch!
One of the happiest days on my recent gaming days!
I don't have Game Pass, will it be available to buy?
Im curious. Never played the original but hear nothing but good things about it. So hope i will enjoy it as much now as people did back then
Xbox and Nintendo colab. Love to see it. This game should be a fun romp.
@species8472 It's coming to switch and they dont have game pass so it should be.
Can we ever get something just for Xbox
I have such fond memories of this game but I'm really scared to ruin my nostalgic memories buy looking at those graphics today. I really want to play it....but I'm kinda scared. But proximity mine multiplayer.... that's a lot of fun
Still have this on an N64 HAHA
Yay now people can play it for 5 minutes and then uninstall it
Perfect Dark on Xbox is superb, really looking forward to this.
@species8472 Everything on Game Pass is
Glad for the people who were hoping for it, and for more xbox games this year.
@Trmn8r
Thanks, i know nothing about Game Pass to be honest.
@species8472 @J_Mo_Money Switch version is part of the Nintendo Online Expansion, but as as for XBox, so far there has been no game in Game Pass that is not available for sale.
Based on the teaser's end banner, it seems it might just become part of the Rare Replay collection, but who knows.
@Reptilio This game on Xbox is going to be a 4k remaster/recreation/whatchacallit.
The Switch version is just an emulation of the original N64 game. Timing aside, only Xbox is getting this remaster.
Hell, yeah!! Finally…
I’m really excited for this! Sounds like just what we expected with Nintendo getting the base game and Xbox getting the remaster 👌
Tales of Symphona Remastered is even coming to xbox! I've never played that and the Tales series is one of my favorites.
@species8472 Think Netflix, but games
I have GP and Rare Replay, so either way I'm covered.
And it seems that Xbox will be getting the better version all round.
I cant wait to play this and then realise that only 4 missions havent aged like spoilt milk...
I wonder why they don’t have a release date yet.
YES! YES! YES! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I played this game enough to know every nook and cranny. The songs are forever living rent free in my head. But I remember the most was being splitscreen 4-players and being pretty tipsy and screaming at the television. So needless to say, I am super excited this day!
Does faithful recreation mean it's not the remake that was leaked a while back???
Either way it's cool.
Rare Replay confirmed:
“GoldenEye 007 will be made available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as part of Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, players who own a digital copy of Rare Replay, the 30-game compilation of classics from the award-winning studio behind GoldenEye 007’s original release, will be able to download and enjoy the game free of charge.”

Only as long as I can purchase it and play it WITHOUT any dependence on some subscription that I must keep pouring money into to be able to access it. Yes, by that I mean GamePass. To each his/her own, but subscription models are just not for me.
Knew not to expect this would be the rumored Xbox 360 version that was never released...which is still disappointing...but hopefully this N64 remaster means that won't be any sub-20 fps moments throughout the game.
YEEEEEEEAHHHHHH!
Sorry @FraserG but this time it's justified! LOL I knew it was the remaster in spite of the retro screenshots for the achievements.
This is one of the best shooter campaigns ever made and the multiplayer made Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party boring in comparison.
I wonder what the naysayers are saying now (on NL, PX, PS...).
When Rare Replay was released, three important games were missing. One of them was Diddy Kong Racing because Nintendo says no (Nintendo only owns the Diddy Kong character, as far as I know). Another one was Conker: Live and Reloaded that was later made available via backwards compatibility, and, finally, Goldeneye 007. They made excuses for not including Goldeneye 007 but now it's clear that they really wanted to include it. They also made excuses for Conker: Live and Reloaded that didn't make sense either because both Viva Piñata and Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise are included. What a wonderful Rare Replay upgrade!
Adding this to Rare Replay (which you can buy second hand pretty affordably) is a classy move I wouldn't expect.
Fan...f'ing..TASTIC!!! Let's go, Xbox!!!!
@SinfulDestroyer What has that to do with it, you salty one? I didn't even mention Switch and I have one (the Lite). Anyway, the N64 rom is coming to Switch, not the remaster, sorry! 😝 The sea became salt-less today.
That's great news
Rumor is Online Multiple player is exclusive to Switch version which’s is word you’d think Local co-op would be…
@mousieone Yeah i read that also. Does Nintendo hold some rights to this game? If so pretty stupid to do that ...
@J_Mo_Money @mousieone What rumour? The information available is that the Switch version is the N64 rom (confirmed by the UI) with online and that the Xbox version is a "faithful recreation" = remaster, so why wouldn't it include online? We don't know yet.
EDIT: The article says that there is no online multiplayer according to a post on the official James Bond website, it's not a rumour. Weird but well, probably more fun in local multiplayer anyway.
Been waiting for this news for a while! YES! I'm stoked to play this classic again. I do hope for online multiplayer but if it's not there then so be it.
Is Sony gonna complain about this too?
@Ashadelo Very likely.
@Banjo- I've heard the way switch handles online on the backend would make it work for them but not xbox. Since Nintendo's way is essentially tricking it to think its local (which is why snes games can do online) and that it doesnt actually have servers. Modern games use servers, so that could be a reason.
@J_Mo_Money Yes, Switch is using the N64 version for Nintendo Switch Online but the Xbox version is not the N64 rom but a remaster, probably an updated version of the Xbox 360 remaster. It shouldn't be a problem to add online modes but they haven't confirmed that just yet.
EDIT: The article says that there is no online multiplayer according to a post on the official James Bond website, it's not a rumour. Weird but well, probably more fun in local multiplayer anyway.
@Banjo- Might wanna check twitter, looks like I was right from the sound of it. No online for xbox, switch exclusive.
@J_Mo_Money The article says that there is no online multiplayer according to a post on the official James Bond website, it's not a rumour. Weird but well, probably more fun in local multiplayer anyway.

The official article also confirms that the Xbox version is a remaster: "A 4K resolution remaster is on its way to Xbox’s Game Pass", while the Switch version is the N64 rom: "the Nintendo 64 classic is coming soon to the console’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online service."
what!? no online multiplayer ..... duuude ugh!@#$
Multiplayer for Switch only. Well, way to not get people excited. I will still play it.
@Spazmonic There is multiplayer on Xbox but not online.
@Banjo- im still gonna play the single player, i have a switch so might try a few MP matches.
the game released exactly on the day i was born, so finally getting to play this is gonna be dope
@J_Mo_Money I'd like to play local multiplayer because I assume that it will be included in the Xbox remaster. The problem with online multiplayer is, well, you probably know. I have fun playing some games online while others just give me frustration because of rage quit, unfairness and whatever. It's like when Sea of Thieves PC players with mouse and keyboard started annihilating Xbox players with controllers, until an update allowed to separate servers... or playing against Fortine mouse pros. On Switch, everyone will be playing on Switch, so it might be fun. The campaign is what I feel like playing the most, anyway.
It will have local MP from what I see. To be honest, I think the single player is what people will stick with longer, but people WANT the online MP only to be like (this sucks) after a few matches lol
If it wasn't for this game there would have been no Halo.
I have a physical copy of Rare Replay. The digital goes for £5 sometimes, kind of wish I had bought it to get Goldeneye free (but that depends on how much it’ll cost to buy it on its own).
This has made a bad day so much better for me. Fist pumped the air when I read this, Haha. Absolute buzzing about this, So happy. Nice one Xbox.
@J_Mo_Money Yes, with friends the local multiplayer might be fun but the campaign is superb, not just because of the level design but because the levels are very replayable and become more complex in higher difficulty levels. I played the N64 game a lot and there was always something different and unique but still fun to do because of the lack of long cut-scenes and filler. The clever stealthy approach is very rewarding and the game is very "gamey", like most Rare games.
I own Rare Replay digitally so this is free for me? Nice. Shame about the MP as i would rather play it online on my Xbox then my Switch but oh well.

listen to this while you wait the release
@species8472 Rare Replay digitally on the store is £4.99 to buy in a sale for the next 2 weeks, would recommend picking that up now as it will include Goldeneye for free
£4.99 for 31 Rare games, now that's incredible value.
Now would be the perfect time to give Rare Replay a Series X|S upgrade.
@SinfulDestroyer Not at all, and you started the only nonsense on this thread. Looking at your comment history, it doesn't surprise me. I guess I'll just ignore you.
I think looking at the NSO Expansion Pack timing, we can deduce that this releases in 2022. NSO Expansion Pack gets 1 N64 game per month, September's game hasn't been announced yet but we know the following games are coming later in 2022:
4 months, 3 games so from that it's pretty clear than Goldeneye is also a 2022 release.
@ChopperCampbell Rare Replay is not optimised for Series S/X but it has the 4K upgrades for the Xbox 360 games on Xbox One X and Series X. The Goldeneye 007 remaster is confirmed to run in 4K, too. The other games are also remastered somehow, like Grabbed by the Ghoulies (1080p and 60fps instead of 480 30fps) and Conker's Bad Fur Day (1080p and it doesn't look like a N64 game at all). So yes, no Series S/X upgrade yet but, at least, there is a partial 4K upgrade. I agree that a Series S/X upgrade would be nice, though.
@J_Mo_Money The James Bond site doesn't mention it but local multiplayer is confirmed by Rare 👍.
"The classic campaign mode, transformative difficulty levels and havoc-inducing cheats will all make their return – as will the iconic split-screen local multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to take to the couch in a battle of wits and skill."

About the Tales of Symphonia remaster, I played it on GameCube. It has simple but fun gameplay and a simple but well-developed story.
@PartyMarty
Will do, thanks for the heads up that's a no brainer!
@species8472 you're welcome thought I'd call it out as it's a definite no brainer if you don't have game pass.
Announced for 'Game Pass' - so maybe not available to buy? At least not on day of release???
Its the 'remastered' for Xbox version, not the 'N64' emulated version that Nintendo are offering. Nintendo have Online play, but Game Pass has local MP only?
If you read what each says, this would appear to be the situation...
I have Gamepass so that's good. But will likely be playing mostly on Switch since I can play against friends online.
@Lavalera cannot say the game has aged that well. The multiplayer was some of the best times I had for sure and it will be nice to be in the jungle above 10 FPS lol.
@Grumblevolcano
I wish GB and GBA were announced. Looks like we will probably have to wait another year. The slow drip on these releases is much worse than the virtual console pace.
@Balta666 oh I know m8, I don't expect it to be some modern masterpiece. I played ff7 earlier this year and that one also felt extremely dated in some ways but I still enjoyed it for what it was, sure it would have been totally different if I would experienced it during the time it was live, but I still wanna see what it is what people are so excited for
@Lavalera One of the best shooter campaigns ever with a lot of stealth elements, great level design, gameplay and music and now in 4K, 60fps (instead of 10-20) and with modern controls, so I hope that you enjoy it!
I've never played this but ive only heard good things about it, especially on here.
Won't harm to give it a try with gamepass, don't really care about it not having online MP, would rather have the better resolution
@Balta666 The Single player is probably dated due to level design and constraints of hardware it was designed for but at least with a 'remade' version - that retains the 'retro' aesthetic it originally had just makes it a classic that is 'playable' today without the 'issues' that plague going back to play the 'original' on its hardware.
For a start, this should have much more 'modern' controls - I know it has a dual thumbstick option like modern FPS games utilise and its going to have 4 player split screen support too - which you know will look much sharper and run smoothly - something you can't say you've ever experienced on console.
I would expect this to compete very favourably with 'modern' Indie games that also go for the 'retro' gaming experience...
It seems that neither could 'agree' a solution to 'sell' the game because of 'rights', so both are able to put the game on their service by mutual consent and MS can package the game as 'part of' Rare Replay so owners of that can download it free.
Obviously MS can't 'publish' Goldeneye and Nintendo too and with the rights split between the two, Nintendo with Publishing rights to the N64 version and Rare owning the assets etc, so they can remake the game but can't publish it so it seems they reached a mutually beneficial solution of putting it in their Online services so no-one is 'selling' it but Subscribers can play it...
As an owner of the original N64 cart, I'm on the fence with this one. Judging by the screenshots, this seems to just be an emulated ROM. ("Remaster" can mean a lot of things!)
But if the controls and timings are tweaked a little, it could still be worth it. (Mapping the C buttons to the left stick in an emulator has always felt just a little off, and the vanilla game has a bug where the firing rate of all the guns is dependent on the current framerate.)
Regardless, I'm glad that this classic is available again, and that so many more people will be able to experience it!
On principle, I'm in favour of as many older games as possible coming back- and ideally, remaining available indefinitely.
Cool I bought rare replay for a fiver on sale lol
Now for the real question... Which will be the better xbox game
Goldeneye or Perfect Dark?
Whilst I enjoyed the original plenty when it was released, its been well surpassed in terms of multiplayer entertainment since.
I cant get excited for this on xbox and especially not since the online mutiplayer, the only new element, is switch only. Its been playable at 4k (4x 1080 render) on a pc emulator for many years..
This is not what im looking for on xbox, but im glad some others can enjoy memories of their youth 😀
@smoreon Every game included in Rare Replay is improved somehow. Conker's Bad Fur Day doesn't even look like a N64 game on Xbox. Yes, it's a late and beautiful N64 game, but the smoothness and resolution of the Xbox version makes it look and play much better. The Xbox version of Perfect Dark is a port but didn't change the graphics significantly. Goldeneye 007 is just that, similar graphics in an improved package and the best way to play the game. Also, as you said, this is a way to preserve one of the best shooters ever made and it's only available for purchase on Xbox because on Switch is a rented rom. It doesn't include online multiplayer but Perfect Dark does.
@Banjo- Ah, good looks. I probably would have known that if I read
@Spazmonic No problem.
