Re: Former Xbox Exec Likes The Idea Of 'Tipping' Developers After Beating Their Games

Johnnel

I would understand something like this for an indie dev that people would want to provide extra support and keep them in business, but never for a large studio. I have concerns about how the money gets divided up because there are many different aspects to game development and a wide variety of people involved. If I enjoyed a game’s gameplay, music, and art while being disappointed in the story and characters, would I give a tip specifically to the departments that I liked or would the people whose work i didn’t appreciate as much get the same tip? Also, with how many people aren’t employed by the developer and are contractors, would they get tips too? I think having an option wouldn’t be bad, but would have a lot of questions that I would like answered before I give some extra money to the game.

Re: Xbox Announces Four Games Going To Other Consoles, 'Not Starfield Or Indiana Jones'

Johnnel

I think it’s kinda funny how people are saying that the cost of AAA games is so large nowadays that it only makes sense that they would be multiplatform, yet expect Microsoft to only port the smaller games. The other games are probably coming to Playstation like they do PC, and then there will be no reason to buy an Xbox. I don’t think this is a good idea since they would need a large catalog of quality exclusive games of all sizes to sell their console, but Microsoft has made it clear their goal isn’t to sell consoles. If they don’t want to sell consoles, then why bother?

Re: Xbox Fan Sparks Huge Debate After Receiving First 'Strike' For Bad Language

Johnnel

Character in game: “F***”
Microsoft: “That’s fine”
Player: “F***”
Microsoft: “That’s gonna be a no from me”

I think this new policy is ridiculous in general, but especially if it is an M rated game. If it is an M rated game, expect to have M rated interactions. The abbreviation is also already a form of censorship and it is dumb that that’s apparently not enough.

Re: Poll: How Would You Grade The Xbox Games Showcase 2023?

Johnnel

The more I think about it, the worse the showcase gets. They said not to temper expectations and yet this feels like a safe showcase showing mostly stuff we already know about. Some games are already out and they just showed updates. To me, giving updates on games that are already announced/released is definitely deserving of tempered expectations. The best announcements were probably Kunitsu-Gami Path of the Goddess and Metaphor: ReFantazio since they were surprise announcements with gameplay shown that interest me. Also, the Hellblade trailer is one of the worst trailers I've ever seen and I am puzzled as to why some people are calling it good let alone a highlight of the show. It was four minutes of nothing but standing in a cave. I'd still probably give the showcase a high C or low B, but it definitely was not worthy of not tempering expectations.

Re: Ubisoft's New Prince Of Persia Game Is Getting Blasted On YouTube

Johnnel

I haven’t played a Prince of Persia game before, but I will say the game itself looks fun. It looks like Metroid Dread and I love Metroid Dread. Some people have a problem with the art style and character designs, but I don’t. It’s not impressive but not horrible. My biggest problem with the trailer is of course the music. It didn’t do a good job of selling the setting and atmosphere. I also thought it was strange how the trailer had no lead in and just cut straight to gameplay. There was no time to get excited for what is about to be seen. I mentioned Metroid Dread and I think of the reveal trailer for that game which had the awesome cutscene of Samus meeting the EMMI before showing gameplay of her running away. This trailer needed something like that to set the tone and atmosphere before dropping gameplay. I will probably enjoy playing the game, but the trailer itself has problems.

Re: Talking Point: Xbox One Users, What Do You Think Of The Console In 2023?

Johnnel

I only use my Xbox One for streaming purposes nowadays. It feels like Microsoft is intentionally slowing down the old product to try and get people to buy the new product since my Xbox One is very slow ever since the Series X came out. The disc drive is also broken and the console oddly turns itself on at random times. It was nice when it was working, but now I have little use for it.

Re: Talking Point: Where Do You Want 'Tomb Raider' To Go Next?

Johnnel

I would like to see a new game that is similar to the recent hitman trilogy. A game were every level is like a large hub that has the objective of finding a treasure or two with maybe smaller treasures to find as bonus objectives. The player would have many different ways of going about completing that objective like the hitman games. A more attractive Lara with a stronger and more confident personality would also be preferable.

Re: Xbox Launch Exclusive 'High On Life' Was Once Meant For Google Stadia, Says Report

Johnnel

@NEStalgia “It’s a video game to unwind…” Elden Ring is the first Fromsoft game that I played, and I have put less than 3 hours into it. I understand that the game is designed specifically not to be a game to unwind with. It is supposed to be a challenge that you work at and be satisfied when the work is done. It is like saying that you would unwind by taking a hike on Mount Everest. Other mountains might be nice for hiking and relaxing, but Mount Everest is there for those that are up to the challenge and dedicated to mountain climbing. The challenge is intended by the developers and I think that’s great. If every game had to have the same difficulty, the lack of variety would get boring quickly.

Re: Report Suggests Ubisoft Could Be 'The Next Big Gaming Acquisition'

Johnnel

I don’t care much for Ubisoft’s recent games. However, I would be slightly upset if Microsoft or Sony bought them since Mario and Rabbids is the only good thing Ubisoft has made in about a decade. If they are bought by another console manufacturer, then Nintendo would probably cancel the sequel. I don’t think it’s very likely Sony or Microsoft will buy them, so I’m not too worried.

Re: Battle Pass Spotted In Overwatch 2 Concept Art

Johnnel

I think all battle passes should adopt the model that 343 says they are going to have with halo infinite. The battle pass never goes away and can still be bought/leveled up even if it is not the pass for the current season. A lot of the time with these games that have many seasons and battle passes, I feel like I already missed out on a lot of stuff, so why bother starting to play now.

Re: Surprise! Tunic Is Available Today With Xbox Game Pass

Johnnel

Not much of a surprise. I, and many others it seemed, was under the impression that it was already announced it coming to Gamepass day one when the game was first revealed. Unfortunately I’ll be out of town for a few days and will not be able to play it, but I do look forward to trying it when I get back.

Re: Review: Dying Light 2 - More Is Less In Techland's Latest

Johnnel

With the statements the developers made about the game recently, I knew the game wouldn’t be my cup of tea. I thought the statements about how it would take 500 hours to complete and how they were going to support the game for 5 years after release showed how there simultaneously too much content and not enough content. The content that was there would be bland only for any significant content to be sold later as dlc. I thought I might’ve been to negative and didn’t expect to be right, but here we are.

Re: Sony Boss Tells PlayStation Owners To 'Expect More Acquisitions'

Johnnel

I bought a PlayStation 4 mostly for the third party Japanese exclusives (Persona 5, Tales of Berseria, FF7R, Street Fighter V, etc.). It would be somewhat disappointing if these third party games became first party games with no chance of going elsewhere, but it makes no difference in the end since they were exclusive in the first place.

Re: Feature: Alright, It's Time For Xbox To Make A Smash Bros. Game

Johnnel

@isturbo1984 I counted about 25 characters on a roster of about 90 that use swords in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. That’s definitely not a majority. While Microsoft now owns a lot of IP’s that they could find characters that do not use guns, the most popular characters that they most likely would include do use guns. Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, Doomguy, characters from CoD like Captain Price, Overwatch characters, Fallout characters, etc. all use guns. That would be a lot of projectile focused characters. Think about how well the game would be received if half the roster was Deadshot from Injustice 2.

Re: Feature: Alright, It's Time For Xbox To Make A Smash Bros. Game

Johnnel

I thought about this idea and have come yo the conclusion that the game probably wouldn’t be that much fun since the majority of characters on Xbox use guns. It would be difficult to make a platform fighter with a roster of characters with unique play styles when they all use similar weapons. Since most Microsoft characters use guns, why not make it a shooter? I think they could make a cool hero/arena shooter.

Re: Talking Point: Will Call Of Duty Become An Xbox Exclusive In The Future?

Johnnel

It's hard to say. The main goal initially is to make back the nearly $70 billion they just spent. I could see Microsoft potentially keeping Call of Duty on Playstation if they think that the sales there would be substantial enough to outweigh the people that would buy Xboxes for Call of Duty or subscribe to Gamepass. Personally, I'm unsure if the new Xbox owners or Gamepass subscribers would outweigh the current Playstation player base, but I'm no market analyst or anything.

Re: Dying Light 2 Will Be Supported For Five Years After Launch

Johnnel

I’m not interested in this game, but when I hear companies use statements like this to advertise single player games, all I could think about is how they are admitting the game is unfinished. Statements like this make sense for multiplayer games that have to make sure they have a consistent playerbase, but for a single player game it doesn’t matter if one person or one million people are playing the game, since the player would still be able to experience the game. A statement like this only tells me that the best option is to buy the game in five years and get thw whole experience for probably less than $5.

Re: Phil Spencer Wants The Gaming Industry To Implement Cross-Platform Bans

Johnnel

@PhileasFragg I think the power should be in the hands of the player. If someone feels like they are being abused online, it is simple enough to mute or block the person they feel is abusing them. No need to get the platform holder involved. Also, in the United States, this could be a question about section 230 which gives immunity for illegal activity to platforms but not publishers. Microsoft recognizes Xbox as a platform for its customers, as stated by Phil himself when he uses the term "cross-platform," but if they are banning people and selectively choosing which people get to be on their platform, then they are acting more as a publisher meaning they could be held responsible for illegal activities that occur through Xbox. I'm no lawyer so I'm not sure how correct my understanding of section 230 is and its application, but I do think it is an interesting question to ask.
