Sounds like a pile of buzz words and advertising gimmicks.
I need some clear cut examples of things that can be done now, on this new device, that couldn't be done before.
With each passing article I read about PS5 and XBX I find myself more and more convinced that a gaming PC and Nintendo Switch is all I would ever need going forward for this hobby.
What did anyone expect him to say? Is he gonna stab his company in the back by saying otherwise?
Although I do believe him here - I don't understand why people think he'd ever say otherwise. Not unless he was about to resign without a severance package!
Having a target like this is nice and all, but I really need more game play and other details about the actual games themselves.
Right now I'm just not very excited about either console, PS5 or XboxX. But I'm leaning MS right now because of the backwards compatibility.
I still have all my old Xbox and Xbox 360 titles in storage. I'd love revisiting many of them. But my 360 mysteriously died a couple years ago. No red ring, it just doesn't turn on. No visible damage, it just doesn't react at all.
I'd totally like to get back into Minecraft at some point. They've added so much to the game. But single player just isn't that interesting and all my friends have long since moved on from the game. We all used to play it back in like 2013 on PC together.
And I still remember when they added beds to the game. lol
I'm not buying it at all. Nothing I have read about either XboxX or PS5 has impressed me.
No matter what buzzwords and excuses they want to make, all I am seeing is "better graphics and faster loading times". Which isn't surprising or impressive.
It's just expected.
I'm sick of these companies making claims. Show me what you're talking about with something you think is actually revolutionary.
All the screen shots and videos I've seen just look like current gen games with higher res and better frame-rate.
Which is nice, but again, not surprising or impressive. I'd darn well hope a device almost a decade newer would have those things.
Loading times haven't been long enough for me to care since the days of PS1. So will next gen be faster? Sure. Does it really matter to me?
Nope. I'm not so impatient that I can't wait 5-10 seconds here and there. I usually just sip my drink or whatever.
I've been playing games for nearly 25 years. Each gen we get better graphics and faster loading. At this point it just doesn't impress me. It's just a given or expected.
What I do like about XboxX over PS5 is the backwards compatibility. The ability to play all those old games on the latest system is fantastic!
Not unless someone invents a headset I can actually wear over my glasses. I can't play VR. Without my glasses I rapidly feel sick and get a headache. But with them on the headset presses my glasses back into my face and is massively uncomfortable.
And no, contacts are not a thing. How people can stand shoving plastic in their eyes is something I will never understand.
@XBontendo We already had events established set right after Return of the Jedi. But when Disney bought Star Wars, they threw it all in the trash with the giant asterisk that they could go back and bastardize popular characters if they wanted (like Grand Admiral Thrawn for example).
Thankfully, I own all the original books and games still, so no matter how much Disney tries, they totally erase that legacy.
Disney Wars is but a pale shadow of the Star Wars I grew up loving.
I wish Disney would take the shakles off and allow there to just be two Star Wars canon. The old expanded universe and the new Disney Wars. Because I absolutely LOVE the former and can't stand the latter.
But furthermore, if they did that, they could revive the Rogue Squadron series, or remaster KOTOR 1 and 2, or even make a KOTOR 3. We could get new Jedi Academy games or Empire at War 2!
I always wanted a Star Wars game set during the New Jedi Order books! I dreamed, literally dreamed of it for years!
By abandoning the old Expanded Universe they are throwing away a huge wealth of potential content for games and merchandise because they think fans are too stupid to understand there being two different timelines.
Ask Marvel and DC fans, different timeline/universes aren't that strange.
Personally, if you ask me, they know their new canon just isn't as good as the old EU, even despite some of the consistency problems the EU had. But I'm openly biased.
So, instead of making us shell out massive amounts of cash to replace our storage with a larger drive, why can't they just add a second expansion slot? I've been saying this about Switch for years, just give us another slot!
How about the games themselves? I'm getting so sick of this. Specs, resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, SSD, teraflops, revolutionary, "It's completely change game design!" blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah!
Can I remind everyone these are game consoles, and the most important aspect of them will be the games themselves!? But no one is talking about them. No, they aren't. Stop typing that reply saying "but 4K 60FPS is so amazing!" Shut up! I know. We all know, and I don't care.
I want to hear about the games, what do you get to do in these games? Give me a preview of the story, hook me on the gameplay, tell me about the setting, the characters, the vehicles etc etc. What kind of adventure can I go on? Where will it happen?
Why is no one talking about the games themselves anymore? It's nothing but specs, resolution and frame rate!
Looking at the screenshots of the PS5 games actually made me feel a little ill.
Aside from Sackboy - they all feel like the devs are trying to force an extreme level of realism on things that just aren't and probably shouldn't be. I HATE the way the new Ratchet and Clank game looks. No way those characters were ever intended to be portayed in a realism style.
High power consoles with impressive graphics do not need to make everything hyper-realism. Every game doesn't need to go that route. I really hope MS understands this better than Sony!
I guess I'm a normie, but it's the 360 for me. Of course I never bought an Xbone. The 360 was the easy winner of its generation for me. Between Wii, PS3 and 360, all of which I own, I played the most on my 360, followed by Wii and then PS3.
I get the impression that companies don't want us to own consoles anymore. Google Stadia might have failed but companies would still like us to give them money for nothing more than access to a server.
The tech just isn't there - but you can be sure that when it finally is, they are going to shove it down our throats and we can take it, or be left behind. MS already tried to ditch the disk drive once, and when that didn't work gaming has evolved in such a way that the disks are still almost meaningless now.
Wait, the first? Meaning more is planned and not included? Honestly that's pretty lame. Especially with XboxX already announced and coming out in probably less than a year.
How about we go back to a time where game consoles just came in different colors? I don't understand why every device in 2020 is a black or white rectangle or square.
It cannot cost that much more to produce a device shell in 3 or 4 colors.
My vote would be for a navy blue or purple color. Or red and white.
Different colors don't need to be tied to limited editions for specific games.
@MasterEMFG There's a lot that went into it. If you can get people to be entirely honest and set aside their nationalism for once, you'll find that both America and Japan committed unspeakable acts during that war - but when it ended, America learned from he mistakes of WW1, instead of leaving Germany and Japan in ruins it helped rebuild both Japan and Germany and in return those nations grew to be powerful and reliable friends and allies for a long time.
And it's very important to look at other examples of important post-war mercy. The Emperor of Japan expected America to kill him at the end of the war - as did many others, and indeed many Americans wanted him dead. But MacArthur knew that doing that would make peace volumes harder, that it would lead to years or decades of potential insurgency. By sparing him that opened the door to reconciliation and forgiveness.
Nothing was perfect about that war or how it ended but I think what we got was vastly better than most alternatives could have been.
It's a shame that so few people learned from history and many now call for a return to isolationist and nationalist policies... Those can only lead to future tragedy.
@MasterEMFG I can say, small sample size, that people I've spoken to here in Japan have been very worried, more so now, than in the past. When I was first here in Japan, during the previous administration, there were mixed feelings about the American bases, but no concern of being abandoned. That wasn't even on the radar. But in more recent years that has been a very real concern.
Japan isn't defenseless - they do actually have a sizable defense force and budget. But from a size and resource standpoint they could not hope to match China. Without the alliance with America, Japan likely would have been forced into the Chinese sphere of influence a long time ago. And considering the trouble history between the nations, that would not likely be a cordial relationship.
Ironically although America and Japan were bitter enemies in the war - because of the way America invested in Japan's rebuilding, little to no residual hostility remains toward the US. Which is something I was honestly surprised to learn when I came here.
@Grot I don't purely mean economics though. With regards to China and Japan, China has a very powerful military, is a vastly larger country, and has far more resources. I am not suggesting China would attack Japan, but they could certainly make things very hard for the small island nation.
And an attack isn't 100% out of the question either. There's a lot of lingering resentment in China over the actions of Japan during WW2. Unjustified resentment in my opinion because those responsible are all long dead and I firmly disagree with the idea of "inherited guilt", but it's there nonetheless.
And another factor is that, while Japan and the US are relatively friendly, recent political trends in the US beg the question of whether America would honor its defense pact with Japan. I live in Japan currently and there are a lot of people here that worry that the whole "America first" mentality means that America no longer has Japan's back in the potential case of aggression.
I generally only choose digital when it's the only practical option or it's significantly cheaper.
But the main reasons for why I like physical have largely already been phased out. I always use this example: I can grab my original copy of Mario 64, stick it back in my N64 and play it just like I could when it was new.
But games today are constantly getting updated and patched - fixing a plethora of bugs and problems that just wouldn't have been tolerable in the pre-digital era. Furthermore you have games that you buy a disk for, and still download half the game.
What good is there in having a physical copy of half a game, un-patched, missing game modes?
@pip_muzz Honestly it's probably related to Japan's proximity to, and rocky relationship with China. China is right next door to Japan and already has a territorial dispute with Japan. If Japan did this - or if Japanese companies did this, it could provoke a lot of problems with China.
On the other hand, Sony and Japan are relatively safe with this choice. The riots and protests in the US are largely an internal issue and Japan and America have a fairly friendly relationship. Japan doesn't have the fear of poking the dangerous monster with this that they do with China and Hong Kong.
@BlueOcean There's numerous problems with that approach. It would cause outrage because it would be massively unfair to people who bought physical. And if they made if so any games you had played physical copies could be brought over then what's to stop people from just sharing disks? Or buying cheap used Wii Us and the Wii U version of the game for 5 bucks used instead?
I'm not at all convinced that they could prevent that. Not to mention how massively hack-able the Wii U is.
@BlueOcean I have to disagree somewhat with your opinion on Nintendo. Wii U was fully backwards compatible with Wii games right out of the box and Wii played Gamecube too. GC support was only dropped on Wii U as a cost saving measure related to hardware. And Switch has no disk drive. While it's possible they could have made it so people who owned the games digitally could get them on Switch too - that would have likely caused more outrage than happiness for all the physical owners.
GBA played the whole library of Game Boy games too. 3DS supported the whole DS library as well.
Nintendo has a pretty good track record over the years with backwards compatibility. Far from perfect - I mean you're not wrong about some ports being full price from Wii U on Switch - but not nearly as bad as I feel you made it sound.
MS has had an alright track record too. With at least some support for Xbox games on 360 and 360 games on Xbone.
But Sony? PS2 played PS1 but after that it just stopped. Excluding that rare and prone to fail PS3 that did support PS2 titles, PS3 did not generally support PS2 or PS1, nor does PS4 support 1-3. And they do not have the excuse of different media - all Playstation systems use disc drives. And DVD players play CDs just as Blueray supports DVDs too.
I don't own an Xbone. But I have a lot of 360 games in the closet I wouldn't mind revisiting. A few OG Xbox titles too. Will they work on XboxX? If this new machine plays everything, or the majority of games, from over the years - at launch no less - they will win me back from Sony easily.
@Grot Just hearing the mention of that type of chore makes me so grateful I live in an apartment! I used to help my father do that around the house as a kid and even together it was usually a whole weekend of work. And that's not even counting the flower gardens my mother took care of. Not to mention watering the lawn and 3 times a week mowing and trimming...
@PretendWorking Is it as loopsided as it is in Japan? In Japan Xbox is literally a joke, they sell barely in the triple digits. When I first moved to Japan, I did a self introduction to my students, and they asked me why I even had Xbox listed alongside Playstation and Nintendo. lol
They weren't even being sarcastic, they were legitimately surprised I even considered MS a contender.
Not these days. But I have put probably 1000ish hours in the game between PC and Switch. Mostly I played on PC with a variety of mods. I remember really love thing "Attack of the B-Team" mod pack.
I first played Minecraft on PC, the beta version, before beds were added to the game.
I just cannot play the game single player anymore. But if even one friend wanted to play it with me regularly, I'd be happy to play together again. Even just chatting while we strip mine for diamonds.

Next you'll tell me the boss of Ford Motor said the new Mustang is really cool and he can't wait to drive one himself!
Or maybe the producer of the next Disney Wars film really likes it and looks forward to watching it.
No no, next you'll talk about how the CEO of EA loves the microtransactions in FIFA.
Maybe Spencer is totally genuine here, but it means nothing to me because it's his company. He couldn't possibly say anything but that he likes it!

I'm still waiting to actually hear some details about this game. Everything about it is:

I've heard almost nothing about what the game is about, what the gameplay is like, what the story is, etc etc.
Re: EA Plans To 'Double Down' On Developing Star Wars Games
Not a fan of this. I'd much rather the floodgates be opened and allow real competition.
While were at it, it would be nice if Disney would allow there to just be two Star Wars timelines. The old expanded universe and the new Disney Wars.
People aren't that stupid, Marvel and DC have had alternative time lines for literally decades. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
I want my New Jedi Order game!

And they do not have the excuse of different media - all Playstation systems use disc drives. And DVD players play CDs just as Blueray supports DVDs too.
Re: Xbox Series X To Offer "More Choice, Value & Variety Than Any Console Launch Ever"
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 30th)
Re: Pick One: Which Of These Xbox Classics Would You Remaster? (#5)
I'd go with Crimson Skies. There really aren't many games in that genre getting made anymore and we could use a good one.
Re: UK Charts: Seven Years On, GTA V Is Still Dominating The Charts
@PretendWorking Is it as loopsided as it is in Japan? In Japan Xbox is literally a joke, they sell barely in the triple digits. When I first moved to Japan, I did a self introduction to my students, and they asked me why I even had Xbox listed alongside Playstation and Nintendo. lol
They weren't even being sarcastic, they were legitimately surprised I even considered MS a contender.
Re: UK Charts: Seven Years On, GTA V Is Still Dominating The Charts
Is either Sony or MS dominant in the UK or are the two pretty even? Never been to the UK myself and never thought to ask this question before.
Re: 126 Million People Are Now Playing Minecraft Every Month
Not these days. But I have put probably 1000ish hours in the game between PC and Switch. Mostly I played on PC with a variety of mods. I remember really love thing "Attack of the B-Team" mod pack.
And Switch because portable.
Re: Talking Point: If You Could Download Any Xbox Game For Free, What Would You Pick?
Xbox? As in the original console only, or Xbox, as in the entire family of consoles?
In the former case it would be either Star Wars KOTOR 2 or Fable
In the latter case it would be the Mass Effect Trilogy - or if that is cheating and since I can't let myself only play one of them, then Fable 2.
Re: Guide: All Xbox Series X Games
There's nothing on this list so far that really calls to me so far... Same for PS5's expected list so far.
But XboxX planned backward compatibility has me leaning toward MS this time. Unless Sony announces PS3 support.
Re: Industry Analyst Suggests The Xbox Series X Could Launch At $400
2028 and neither Sony no MS have released a console in over a decade as both wait for the other to admit a price first!
Meanwhile the Switch 3 has just broken records for launch unit sales, though PC gaming remains the largest marketshare
Re: Minecraft First Released For Xbox Eight Years Ago Today
I first played Minecraft on PC, the beta version, before beds were added to the game.
I just cannot play the game single player anymore. But if even one friend wanted to play it with me regularly, I'd be happy to play together again. Even just chatting while we strip mine for diamonds.
Re: Xbox Exec Confirms Smart Delivery On Xbox Series X Will Support Cross-Progression
This is pretty cool, not gonna lie.
