Sony has officially revealed the design of the PlayStation 5 during its digital reveal event. Two different models have been announced - a normal version and a "Digital Edition" without a disc drive.
It's an interesting move, given that Xbox is rumoured to be unveiling its cheaper, lesser powered "Lockhart" console later this year as well. Will both companies have two different models of next-gen systems on the market come Holiday 2020? That might well be the case, but we'll have to wait a little longer to find out.
What do you think to the design and the choice of two models? Let us know in the comments.

Will be getting one of each for sure! Not the sexiest console and I actually prefer the simplicity of the Series X but not a huge deal. Seems more likely we'll see Lockhart as a discless Xbox
Not too keen on the design to be honest. I actually prefer the toilet seat and hoover memes to the official one. For some reason it reminds me of insects.
It's futuristic but abit strange looking.... Can it lay flat or does it have to be on it's side?
So Lockehart is definitely a thing. This was Probably what MS was waiting for. And I prefer Series X, the blue like in between white and black is hard on my eyes..
@BANJO I think they showed it laying on the side.
MS already made a discless XBOX ONE S, so they'll probably do that again.
@BANJO Yes horizontal has been confirmed
Digital only seems a bold choice for Sony.
It makes sense with Xbox given how sublime Gamepass is but Sony just doesn't have the service to support all digital does it? Unless paying insane digital store prices doesn't bother you of course.
@redd214 @RedShirtRod Thanks for the confirmation...
The controllers still look they're wearing a ladies vest too. I can't unsee it.
I’m sorry, but that thing is hideous.
It looks like a router. It's awful. The games looked...fine? Horizon is beautiful, looks like more Horizon, i get the feeling Spiderman is more of a DLC type thing, Ratchet and Clank looked ok. Thought it was a perfectly fine show...
@armondo36 It was certainly a lot better than the Series X “gameplay” reveal that’s for sure and while most of the PS5 games looked fantastic, I didn’t see anything in the games that were a big generational leap but it’s early days and we know as the consoles life goes on games look better, bigger and could have innovative gameplay.
@armondo36
I thought it was “meh” & predictable. I figured they would have Horizon, Gran Turismo, a Housemarque game, the 405th Ratchet & Clank game, etc. 🙄
Spider-Man was a surprise, but it looks like DLC for the PS4 game. And the console is ugly as sin.
I thought it was an ok show. Not terrible, but not great either.
I really don’t like the push toward leaving physical copies behind. Was not too happy to see MS test the waters with the [appropriately named] XBox One SAD. Hope MS does not try this yet again.
That aside: Spider-Man as a launch title was a pleasant surprise. Horizon not even having a date was extremely disappointing. Would not be shocked if that won’t come out at least until 2022.
huh... well, what makes that interesting is that the disc version and the disc-less version both pretty much have the same specs... right? But isn't Lockhart supposed to be weaker than Series X?
I think the big battle we're not seeing right now is what the studios will price all their consoles.
P.S. funny enough, I like the console, but not the controllers. lol
@Tharsman
I agree. Horizon 2 not being a launch title for PS5 was shocking & a downside for Sony, in my opinion.
And the Spider-Man game feels like a side-story/DLC type of thing as opposed to a brand new game.
And Microsoft gets ripped for not showing gameplay in their May show, but Sony didn’t show off a ton of gameplay either. And these two games showed off none.
@KelticDevil let’s face it, the biggest issue is people got hyped to watch Valhalla gameplay specifically, and didn’t get it. They were not wrong to expect it.
Sony did show some gameplay, for some games, and since they never directly hyped any participar game, it didn’t become an issue.
All in all, although I personally was underwhelmed (mostly because I kept focusing at the fact that most games had no date, or a vague “2021” date, most people got exited. I do think that excitement is going to turn around and bite them, once people start realizing only three of the games shown are launch window:
•Spider-Man
•Godfall
•Astro’s Playground (a Wii sports kinda mini pack-in.)
I hope MS seizes the moment and throws a lot of “Available at Launch” titles next month once their event comes out.
Looking at the screenshots of the PS5 games actually made me feel a little ill.
Aside from Sackboy - they all feel like the devs are trying to force an extreme level of realism on things that just aren't and probably shouldn't be. I HATE the way the new Ratchet and Clank game looks. No way those characters were ever intended to be portayed in a realism style.
High power consoles with impressive graphics do not need to make everything hyper-realism. Every game doesn't need to go that route. I really hope MS understands this better than Sony!
@Tharsman
Yea the release date thing was the most shocking thing to me of the show. Sony’s first party has very little coming out at launch or even in 2020.
I didn’t expect them to have a lot since two of their audios still have games yet to release on PS4. But I, at least, thought Horizon 2 would be a launch title.
Microsoft has a huge chance here in July to knock it out of the park.
@KelticDevil first party? Even the third party stuff is not coming until next year.
Sure, most the stuff that MS showed coming this year are also games available on XBOne, and sometimes PS4, but think all of it is also furthermore optimized with ray tracing, native 4k and other features when running on XSX.
But still means tons of XSX optimized games 2020.
And we still have not seen Halo Infinite running on XSX (unless I missed that...)
Honestly, I have a hunch the PS5 most popular games will be TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima in BC mode.
@Tharsman
If they are even backwards compatible. Who knows, at this point? Sony didn’t say anything about that either.
It looks very ugly, to be honest! Series X is beautiful in comparison, clean and minimalist!
@KelticDevil they did say any game released after June will be required to pass BC testing on the PS5 to be certified, and I’m sure that will still include TLOU2.
That does not mean they will be enhanced in any way, though.
@Tharsman @KelticDevil I also expected Horizon 2 to be a launch game. So then not counting the mini game Astro (something like Nintendo Land) all that Sony has for the PS5 launch is Spiderman which turned to be an expansion.
Back on topic, I think that Series S exists and it's digital only. All rumours say that it's less powerful than Series X so it will probably be smaller too. It's going to be very interesting because both PS5 models are huge and none is more powerful than Series X.
@BlueOcean apparently Deathloop will also be launch window, and a timed exclusive (I’d guess a year.)
Kena is also launch window but PS4/PS5 (would be nice to see if somehow they incorporate some smart-delivery-esque system for that game.)
Oh and NBA, but that will go everywhere.
@Tharsman Yes but Deathloop is a Bethesda timed-exclusive, right? Kena is an indie game so not sure if that will remain exclusive or not.
@BlueOcean think so, but timed exclusives with big shops tend to be a whole year. By that point a lot of the “what machine to get first/at all” will have settled.
If we weighting “what can I play on launch that I can’t play on the competitor”, Deathloop and Kena should be counted.
I’m still taking for granted Halo Infinite will be a launch title for XSX.
@Tharsman You're right but I was counting what Sony has for PS5 launch and it's just Spiderman!
I'm one to wait a whole year (hi Final Fantasy VII) but I know some people don't. I'm also taking for granted that Halo Infinite is a launch title and I'd say that Hellblade II might be too... and Forza Motorsport 8?
@MaccaMUFC it will be better to compare this with Microsoft's actual show in July. that will be more of an apples-to-apples comparison. i feel like Microsoft just wanted to show a few games off and people got upset because..well gamers always get upset.
this is the ugliest console since the Atari Jaguar, and that thing literally looked like a toilet.
@KelticDevil it can't be a good sign when your console looks like one of the fake mock-ups people have been spreading around the internet.
@armondo36
Very true!
