One of my flatmates had an Xbox in my final year of university whilst I had a Dreamcast and GameCube, and we both had gaming PCs. After I left and he stayed on to complete the final year of his PhD I went back to visit and ended up playing Knights of the Old Republic, at that point I knew I couldn’t wait for the PC release and when I got back home I went straight out and bought an Xbox.
@Markatron84 You're correct, you do get points for logging in to the app, but it's no longer a daily reward against the completionist reward. So whilst in the past you would only have to log in to the app and play a game a total of 45 times in the month, you now have to play a game and get an achievement 45 times in a month (some months will be easier than others depending if it's a 5 week month).
I'm just going to accept that I'll no longer get this reward and move on.
@Markatron84 In those days we also had a daily for logging in to the Xbox app, rather than a daily for an achievement making it easier to get the 45 dailies.
Whilst these changes mean I won't get the 1000, I just take the rewards program for what it is, a bonus, I'll get as many points as I can from it, and once it no longer pays for my GPU I'll quit it, although being stacked for 3 years that will likely be a while off.
@PapaGlitch Microsoft games usually have cross save through the Xbox platform (so Windows store) so there will almost certainly be cross save that way, I'm not sure if this extends to Steam versions though. I'm sorely tempted to install Windows on an SD card on my Steam Deck so I can play MS GP games natively
@jordan1992 When the deal goes through the price will be $95 per share as that’s the price Microsoft have already agreed to buy at. At $72 per share right now you would make $23 per share, so a decent profit per share at the current price.
@jordan1992 The a price Microsoft will be buying at is already set, so if the share value is lower right now, people may be reluctant to sell as they know they’ll get more if the deal is approved, and if it’s higher you’ll lose out when selling them to MS
Ignoring the point of whether it's right or wrong for Sony to block the streaming of their games via the Edge browser on Xbox, one thing I have to point out is that you can't really compare GFN with Game Pass cloud streaming.
Whilst they are both at heart game streaming services, they operate in completely different ways. With GP you're subscribing and getting access to the library chosen by MS, so your game choice is through the subscription choices only. With GFN, you can either play via the free service, or subscribe for some streaming benefits, but you have to purchase the games through a service such as Steam to be able to play them.
With that in mind, Sony are effectively saying you can play the game you have purchased a license to play via any browser capable of using GFN except for the one on the Xbox. But then, they're a business and they have decided that is the best way for them to do business that will maximise their profits (same as MS do with their decisions and Nintendo do with theirs).
@CaptnDave It might not be what you’re looking for, but in the accessibility options menu, you have 2 options, an unlimited stamina mode (does exactly what it says on the tin), and a no fail mode (means you can’t die during combat). These modes can both be turned on and off as you want through gameplay.
This is good news, but when I do finally get mine (currently now due after Q3, so over a year after placing my reservation) I may just end up dual booting it (this will be available when Steam OS 3 launches apparently) with Windows 11 (which should be working on it by then) allowing me to install the games to it too.
Now if they get full official support for the MS storefront and the games working via Proton I won’t even need to do that.
@Krysus With the Steam Deck you are able to install Windows and then use the Xbox App through that. I'm still hoping an official app comes out for use within the Steam OS though.
@Phantom_Anima We find it's just a case of making sure you do your daily sets for mobile and PC searches, as this nets you about 200 points a day minimum, and making sure you keep up on your weekly sets on Xbox. I got the 80 week bonus on mine during Feb, so I got the 10 week 2500 bonus points. Also keep an eye out for any punch cards on the Xbox dashboard that you qualify for, as these can help. I personally try to save the achievement ones for the 3 achievements in a week to help with that one.
And a point that many people may or may not know, achievements in their phone games (such as Sudoku) count towards the weekly set achievements (although not the Game Pass ones if they come back) if you don't have the time to play an Xbox or PC game to get the achievements needed for that week.
@Phantom_Anima My wife picks up around 11,000-12,000 points a month, and that’s without GamePass rewards or the rewards from the Xbox app. With the Game Pass and Xbox app ones as extra I got 25,000 points last month. So in the UK at least it’s easy to make decent points. And generally neither of us do the daily achievement ones, usually only when we need to get 3 achievements in a week if we spread the 3 achievements out over 3 days
@UltimateKGB If they do manage to get it working natively, it will at least save me having to install Windows to get it working, and then still install Steam to get access to my Steam library
@Kilamanjaro I have the 512GB one reserved. Going to be quite some time until I can put my order in to purchase it though as even before the 2 month slip I was showing after Q2.
As has been stated a few times in the comments MS only entered the console market when Sony started pushing the PS2 as a PC for the living room, Microsoft saw that as cutting in to their market so had to compete. I found this very long article which goes in to the birth of the Xbox to be a very interesting read https://www.shacknews.com/article/120300/bet-on-black-how-microsoft-and-xbox-changed-pop-culture
I think if they do it as a TV show, they have to work it in the same way as the books and work on the surrounding characters and not follow the Shepard story. Then and only the. Would it have any chance of working.
My first Xbox was the original Xbox which I got in 2003, my flat mate at uni had one in 2002, so I didn't need one of my own, but after leaving and playing KoTOR, I needed to get one of my own to skip the wait for the launch of the PC version.
My favourite moments would date back to the Xbox 360 era, I used to run a website and we had regular gaming nights that are unforgettable. Gears of War 2 playing grenades only matches, or chainsaws vs shotguns stick out in mind. Playing Bad Company 2, joining a team death match with another team being half way to victory when we joined yet still winning, or all of the conquest matches in the Vietnam add on, nothing could beat a night of late gaming, a few bears and your friends on voice chat, something that nothing could do as well as Xbox in the 360 era.
My vote would be between 360 and Series X. The 360 would be the winner at the moment, but if the Series X lives up to its potential it will surpass it. These two generations are the Xbox generations I got in to at launch and both moved me away from PC, the other two were additional to PC.
I never actually played either of these games despite being a fan of the original movie, at the time I just expected movie tie in games to be bad games. Although my mind was changed between these two games by Escape From Butcher Bay, which to this day is still my favourite movie tie in game, followed by Dark Athena. Now these are games I would love to see remade, or a new game to tie in with the release of Furya when it comes out.
I just want one of these controllers that’s big enough for the Galaxy Tab A 10.1. I have the Kishi for iPhone and find it amazing, but I want portable gaming on a 10” screen
@VenomousAlbino @rjer You also get reward points back when you spend on the digital store (even if it’s all money from credit from reward points). I think it’s 5 points per £ for level 1, 10 points per £ for level 2 (which just requires earning 500 points a month) and if you’re a Game Pass subscriber it’s 20 points per £ spent.
At the moment my limited gaming time is taken up by the Gamerscore Challenge. I’ve recently completed Donut County and Full Throttle as part of it, and will now move on to other easy 1000 games I’m interested in (I used up the really easy ones in the last challenge).
I was a little late to the party having only got my first Xbox in 2003, but my flat mate at uni had one from 2002, so I regularly got to game on that at the time.
@VenomousAlbino It’s even better as you get further in. I’ll be hitting my 40 week streak next week and getting 2500 bonus points.
I’m currently sitting on 51k and will be getting Mass Effect Legendary Edition when I reach enough (58.5k) to get £50 of credit. Can’t complain getting the entire Mass Effect trilogy for £3.99.
@ComposedbyNone Sometimes I have to login about 3 or 4 times before it connects. I also had the same issue trying it on Edge on PC. It’s not a major issue, and won’t be a problem at all when it goes live to everyone.
I have the invite, I’ve tried it out on iOS and PC. It works as well as it does on Android when you’re playing the games. The only issues I’ve had are on the landing page, where it will regularly tell me it’s open to people who have had an invite.
Original Xbox and KOTOR. I had a PC capable of playing it, but after trying it on a friend’s Xbox, I had to go out and buy my own along with the game just to get it a few months early.
I tried attacking the guards for the lockdown in Escapists but couldn’t get the quest to pop that way. Thanks to True Achievements, I found that you can get it by just lying in bed until 9am when you’ll have missed roll call. If you don’t want an achievement to pop you’ll have to quit before the dogs get to you though.
