Yes, it's really been 20 years since the release of the original Xbox - or at least, it will have been on November 15, 2021!
To lead up to that date, Microsoft has begun kicking off the celebrations early, issuing a first wave of 20th anniversary gear into the Xbox Gear Shop, dishing out a bunch of anniversary themed wallpapers, and much more.
In addition, the team has advised fans to register today for Xbox FanFest to participate in 20th Anniversary FanFest activities including exclusive sweepstakes, FanFest gear, and digital experiences.
It's not just the original Xbox that is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021 - the Halo franchise is also joining in the fun as you can see above, with the team at 343 Industries highlighting the occasion on social media and Halo Waypoint.
You can check out a full rundown of everything Xbox is doing to kick off the celebrations over at the official Xbox Wire website, and Microsoft says it'll have "more fun to share as we get closer to the November 15th anniversary date."
"Whether you have been an Xbox fan since day one or joined Xbox for the first time this week, we are humbled and excited to be a part of the Xbox community with you. As we reminisce together about the memories we’ve shared over 20 years, we also can’t help but be excited about what’s next for Xbox. Imagine what we will do together over the next 20 years!"

How about some free games to celebrate?
Making a bad ass GwG list would be great. Give me Witcher 3!
i will be celebrating this amazing 20 year milestone. by buying a limited edition Halo infinite series x console if one becomes a realization
Yup, 20 years!
Oh, 19, as traded the XONEX last year and haven't got hold of the XSX yet, lol
but you could kick off the 20 year celebration right by giving us free AAA games . and having a 20 year celebration 60-75 % off game sale on the Xbox store
This makes me feel there's an increased chance of Halo Infinite actually releasing specifically on the anniversary rather than wait until the following day for a normal Tuesday release.
i have been apart of the Xbox community for all 20 years and what an amazing 20 years it has been. i still have all of my original Xbox console spanning from 2001- 2021. its been quit a ride and I'm proud that I've been able to witness the evolution of this great platform . i see only great awesome things coming to Xbox in the next 20 years. we are all on this fantastic journey together (we are gamers we are Xbox)
Seeing this article reminded me of something. Is the Xbox brand iconic? There are things people associate with Sony and Nintendo, that makes their brands iconic. I don’t see it with Xbox. Outside of the logo, I mainly see a PC in console form. There’s nothing about the games that stands out. No disrespect to the system and those who enjoy it. Maybe it feels this way because of the Xbox One’s performance. 🤷🏾♂️
I joined Xbox family in 2007 I think, or possibly early 2008, I remember the original Assassins Creed and first Mass Effect blowing me away, as did Call of Duty 4. From 2013, I moved onto PS4 but I did eventually return a couple of years later, and since then, I have sort of jumped backwards and forwards between the two.
Nowadays I primarily play on my Series X, but I also was very fortunate to get a ps5 too as well as a laptop with a Ryzen 7 and Gtx 1660 ti, so I am pretty much sorted for the next 7 years ( unless my laptop dies out, I cannot see strategy games placing too much strain on a 1660 for the foreseeable future)
I got an XBox One in 2017. I've had a blast playing it, and I'm glad to celebrate this milestone being part of this community.
@outsider83 Yes it's iconic. Gears, Halo and Game Pass are all iconic.
I have been an Xbox fan since i stood in line at Best Buy to get the Original Xbox. I have been a loyal fan ever since. I do not expect any free games from Microsoft because of this and those of you that want/expect free games and free AAA games should stop hoping. We dont deserve anything. I am just glad that Microsoft is still around and doing what they do best. Thank you Microsoft and Xbox!
Wow I’m getting old, I was there day one with the original Xbox and Halo and had every Xbox console since and now series x.
Skipped the original Xbox (had a PS2 and GameCube that gen) but got into the Xbox Ecosystem with the Xbox 360 after Sony overcharged for the PS3. Got a PS4 at the beginning of last gen due to Mattrick's screwing up but got a One a few years ago. Now I have a Series X.
@phoenix1
It’s good to know someone has been there from the beginning and had every Xbox console.
Also someone is as old as me 😂
@Porridge2215
Same as me and as old as me 😂
Come on Fletch you must have contacts to get a series x.
How should I vote if I owned an original Xbox but then switched to PC and didn’t come back to Xbox until a couple months ago?
Also the original wasn’t brand new, it was second hand from CEX and bought roughly around the year Xbox 360 released in (I was a child at the time and grew up in a not very affluent family).
In 2001, I bought the most powerful and creative console and the most creative in terms of games & I'm proud of that
💚❤💚❤💚
@Dezzy70 Same mate, I too am old haha
@Dezzy70 Me too, First game was halo, still remember driving down the beach in the warthog and the feeling, Now the proud owner of a series x and every console before it.
This is awesome! Though I have no real nostalgia for the brand at all, I love seeing folks excited for things. Hope they have some great things on the docket to celebrate!
I've had an Xbox since the first console came out, I bought my first one within a week or so of it coming out. I didn't join Xbox Live until a couple of years after that though, as I don't really do multiplayer. I've still got my original Xbox somewhere, as well as a couple of 360's (including a Gears of War one), I have the Project Scorpio Xbox One, a Gears of War Xbox One, and a Xbox One X. All that, and a Series X too...
Mind you, I've also owned every iteration of the PlayStation too, except for the PS4 Pro, but including the PS5. The Xbox is far and beyond my favourite console, if a game is multi-platform, I will always get it on the Xbox. As a consequence I only played about 10 games on my PS4 throughout the entire generation, and though I've had a PS5 since launch day, I still haven't played it. My Series X, on the other hand, has been utilised every days since day one, and I'm more than a little impressed.
The future is exceptionally bright for the Xbox brand...
@Cyberpunk1964
Really hoping after all the ups and downs over the years, Halo Infinite gives me that same feeling from 20 years ago.
I got my Xbox 360 in high school when Gears of War was released. I've been obsessed with both the Xbox brand, and the Gears and Halo series ever since. I use a Playstation and Switch often, but nothing will ever beat the times I had gaming with my friends in Gears of War and Halo 3. It's still my go to console and eagerly anticipate all that's to come this generation.
@LocalPenguin
Never to old to game.
And looking at the results of the survey, lots of us on here are.
Xbox needs to get young and trendy again, more like in the glory xbox360 days.
Get the FIFA and COD advertising rights, the crowd back over to Xbox and ignite the youthful audience with games like gears of war again.
I jumped in to the Xbox 360 after my PS2 died and never looked back. I’ll never forget my birthday weekend, diving into Dead Rising and being blown away by the spectacle on show.
Oh, and replaying the Tom Clancy Rainbow Six Vegas demo for months - all because that damn casino map was so addictive!
I bought into Xbox in 2008. Haven't looked back.
Also, don't remind me that the newest member of the Big 3 has been in the game for 20 years. It doesn't feel like it's already been that long.
@Dezzy70 yupe not old but I'm as old-school as Pac-man....lol I'm proud to be apart of a special group of gamers still gaming today now on these amazing gen9 systems. I've seen and played every kind of game through the decades since the very early 1980's. its been real fun to watch the gaming industry evolve throughout the ages
@phoenix1
It certain has evolved done my Atari2600 days.
I tell the young of today, that they have gaming so good nowadays compared to Defender and Pacman.
The young will never see the evolution we have, because now the gains over the years are far less and are diminishing rapidly.
Happy 20th celebration, Xbox 4 Lyfe..
Joined in 2008 when I got my 360. After a few years I didn't use it much. Kicked off again last December when the XSX arrived!
This makes me feel old. Halo with my buddies, great times!
I’m an original Xbox owner and one of the lucky ones to have owned every console made by Sega, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft (my parents really supported my brothers and my gaming habit).
I remember the classics of that era, Halo, Fable, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and of course Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
Three teenage boys played that game to death for erm... the gameplay and well written story of course.
I've played my brothers Xbox 360 back in the day, but never owned my own Xbox system. I have been gaming on the Windows Store since 2016, so that is something I suppose.
I was a little late to the party having only got my first Xbox in 2003, but my flat mate at uni had one from 2002, so I regularly got to game on that at the time.
I got a 360 Slim in 2010, an Xbone Gears/Halo bundle that was on sale in (I think?) 2018, and a Series X on launch day (that I actually got for $0 due to a pricing error 🤣) Xbox is a very good platform with good services like GPU, and the BWC is awesome. I'm playing the 360 version of RDR now and it runs amazingly well on XSX.
Been with Xbox since between shortly after the release of Halo 2 and the release of the Xbox 360. It seemed like I had the original Xbox for longer than that, but I guess most of my Halo 2 time was actually on the 360. Either way, that means it's been almost 16 years now for me since the 360 was released in November of 2005.
Kept owning their systems all along, but switched my preference later in the 360/PS3 generation and for the PS4 generation, but I'm back with Xbox as my primary console with the excellent Xbox Series X. It's a beast, and the future is very bright.
One slightly negative note is their 20th anniversary group of games listed on the Microsoft store is kind of a joke. Some obvious classics, but then some new games that really have no business being there like Watch Dogs: Legion. No offense to fans of that game, but it's not something that should be included in something like this.
@Dezzy70 afraid not - Harry Grout has retired, (the old dog), Lukewarm is a no show.
Private Joe Walker would sort me out, but he left for the smoke to do a deal and ain't been seen since...
Expected someone from the One generation to be in the minority but this margin is quite something. Joined the xbox family since nov 18 and I love it. I've had to adjust a bit being a ps4 gamer before but it's been a great experience. Here's to a great series x generation.
Not sure what to put for that Poll. I had a 360 many moons ago, but haven't had an another Xbox till the Series S, so am I 1-2 years, or the 11-15 one?!
@Porridge2215
Try the Eastgate platoon I heard they had a few.
If not try south London a chap called Del Boy, he gets everything.
I joined Xbox console proper late to the game. 2008 or so, after learning that PS3 was garbage with any and all multiplats. But I was actually exclusively (then primarily) PC from the mid-90's through the day I got the 360, so while not "Xbox" technically, I was primarily steeped in Microsoft's gaming environment since '96 or so when N64 didn't excite me.
@outsider83 I think it's "too new" to be iconic. 20 years is a big milestone, but it hasn't crossed over extreme generational/era gaps yet to look back at the earliest models as a different time and way of life and say "wow, I remember that back in the day". 2001 still seems like part of the same era as 2021. 1995 (PSX) seems like a whole other civlization. 1984 (NES) seems like an era uncovered deep in the sands of the desert. Halo 1 was revolutionary, but Halo Infinite isn't likely to break any ground as something that changes the way we perceive games, just a refinement of form. Compare it to Crash 1, FFVII on PSX, or SMB, TLoZ, DK arcade, etc on NES, it feels like a completely different world of games. Plus those brands have mascots due to their 80's/90's pedigree that helped create the icon. XB didn't really have mascots to attach to it. Chief is the closest thing, but a faceless powersuit doesn't really carry that mascot iconography with it. Cdr. Shepard, the Jade Empire cast, etc could and should have become their mascots and icons, but they never actually owned them. The brand can still become an icon, but I think that gives it a slower route until the brand and logo itself has more widespread sentiment attached.
By 2031, Xbox will probably seem "iconic" when we look back at it. Especially once GoogApplAzon takes over in the gaming space, the console with a familiar logo and the first mainstream cloud service will look ever more iconic.
Living in the UK at the time, we had to wait until 2002 for the Xbox to launch. I managed to save up the money by selling burned discs of various media at school.
Pretty sure I paid £300 at launch for it and they dropped the price a few weeks later. They sent me Dead Or Alive 3 as a good will gesture for paying £100 extra at launch. Been Xbox ever since.
Have been playing Xboxs since the original, but the One X is the 1st I've owned personally. With this 20 year celebration, I hope they really celebrate by giving us a ton more backwards compatible games, now that would feel like a celebration of the past 20 Xbox years.
