@Carck It's more divisive than any other Kojima game since MGS2 but still not nearly to the extent of most AAA games
It still got a pretty positive reception from both critics and fans and hasn't done enough to damage his rep. It's also just a cool comeback story after his relationship with Konami was soured
I personally thought the "game" part of it was tedious but I enjoyed the narrative and that's ultimately what I look for in a Kojima game
@Only1PJA I doubt the SEGA acquisition stuff is actually happening. In that case why didn't they just dissolve the deal they had over PSO2 if they were being bought outright which would naturally make future games exclusive to Xbox
@BlueOcean FFXIII is technically just a backwards compatible-enhanced title from what I've heard and I think it just works with your OG Xbox 360 copy if you have one lying around
I bet Square probably wants to brush XIII under the rug with how polarizing it is among the other main entries which is probably why there hasn't been an official remaster
@BlueOcean When they say "best place to play" it could also likewise mean, "best optimized", but especially when taking into consideration that there are still series Bethesda have that are currently active like MachineGames' Wolfenstein series or the current DOOM series of which two or three of the games are on pretty much everything, it would make next to no sense to have games like New Colossus or DOOM Eternal be on PS4, Xbox, Switch, PC and even Stadia, to then suddenly the next game just being on Xbox and PC. That's cutting out like more than half of your playerbase. For original IPs they can totally be positioned as exclusives but for series that are currently ongoing I don't see that happening for a good few years until they get rebooted again
@BlueOcean I don't see them just suddenly making Elder Scrolls exclusive to Xbox
Maybe after TES VI but definitely not now. Doubly so for stuff like Wolfenstein considering the current series is still not completed and it began as a multiplatform franchise
Elder Scrolls and anything new from DOOM and Wolfenstein are probably staying multiplatform. It'd be stupid now for those particular franchises to have had such a footprint as multiplatform games, to just suddenly start being Xbox/PC-only, especially since TESVI has been in development since well before the acquisition was even announced, and Wolfenstein is still an ongoing series which hasn't even wrapped up yet
Well they said it. SOME games are going to be Xbox/PC exclusive
I imagine the ones in already established multiplatform franchises like Elder Scrolls, DOOM & Wolfenstein will continue to be multiplatform for the forseeable future, but I can totally see them making Starfield and Indiana Jones exclusives for the platform, the latter especially as an answer to PlayStation getting their hands on Spider-Man
I feel like the people overreacting are kind of misinterpreting what he said. Even the headline of the article paints him in a super antagonistic light
I'm sure he actually gets why people prefer Game Pass, but it is also a more disposable method in regards to playing games much like any Netflix-style service that has thousands upon thousands of different apps and content for a low entry fee
I personally stopped using Game Pass a while back because I just found it easier to dedicate my time to a single game if it genuinely interested me as opposed to sampling a bunch of games that I might not even play all the way through, which makes the subscription I have basically serve no purpose. I dabbled a bit with Master Chief Collection when it came to Game Pass on PC but that's literally all I've played on it before cancelling it and just buying it on Steam because I was far more interested in playing it to render my judgement and refunding it if it doesn't hook me as opposed to trying it once and letting my sub lapse over
That's just me though. Admittedly there are very few Xbox exclusives that genuinely hooked me over the past few years compared to Sony or Nintendo's offerings, so I found it just safer to buy the ones that actually captivated me instead of spending a few bucks on a subscription I'm not taking full advantage of. It's like how I treat anime on Netflix. If I can watch the shows I genuinely want to keep up with for free on sites like Anime Twist, why would I sub to Netflix or Crunchyroll just for Devilman Crybaby and Kakegurui
Definitely not 90's console wars levels of hardcore considering PS2 basically wiped the floor with everything else but this was like the last decade I can remember where gaming consoles actually had personality. The designs of the PS2, Xbox and GameCube were so loud and I feel like the PS5 and Series X are kind of harkening back to that era where everything had a wildly different aesthetic
Really bummed that it's not as great as it sounds on paper
Kind of sounds like most recent first party Xbox games to me honestly. I thought this one would have so much potential due to the dual-reality concept and the Silent Hill-esque atrmosphere.
@Menchi How is this being a corporate shill exactly? It's literally just logical to continue to support existing players on older platforms with active and thriving install bases so it means more people can play the game and the publishers profit way more. They're only going to start doing next-gen only games once they're confident almost everyone has switched over to the new hardware. That's just how this works. Nothing defensive towards corporate entities or whatever bullsh*t you're talking about
If you were one of the 96% who don't have a next gen console yet you'd probably understand
@Menchi Yeah because so many people own next gen consoles right now
It's literally the same deal as the PS4/Xbox One launch window. It also would've been really stupid to leave out older gen players because the PS4 and Xbox One still have massive install bases and nobody can buy a PS5/Series X right now without someone botting a console and selling it for overinflated prices
The GTA IV on Xbox 360 announcement was legendary. This was around the time a lot of major third party franchises like it and Final Fantasy which were previously PlayStation mainstays finally went multiplatform and it was really funny seeing the reaction on internet forums back then from early PS3 adpoters
@NEStalgia None of the versions are the most polished thing out there, especially after the numerous delays, but it really came back to bite them in the ass when they decided to actively hide the console versions from the public eye. Not helping things is that demo they showed of the PS4 Pro build basically looks like it's running on a higher end PC and being sold as a console version identical to the PC version
I still don't think this means they're above fixing it though. Considering a good chunk of players are on PS4 as is they really need to turn things around. I still don't think the developers are entirely at fault. They don't advertise the game. It's just a classic case of extremely poor mismanagement and misplaced optimism. I honestly would've taken another delay to holiday 2021 if it meant getting the best product possible on ALL systems despite my firm stance on buying this game on PC
Yeah I think I can echo a lot of what Newell said here
CP2077 had a really rough launch and arguably failed to deliver on what was advertised, but CDPR is not a malicious or scummy company and they ain't on that EA/Activision/Take Two level that a lot of people like to dramatize. Truth be told I thought CP was actually really solid. Was it the transcendant experience everyone hyped it up to be? Nah not at all, but it's one of the better open world games I've played in general since BotW imo
It really is the technical state that holds it back, but I do hope this game eventually gets polished up to the title they probably expected. I think making it a timed PC exclusive like Witcher 2 and Morrowind would've really helped to give the console versions, particularly the base PS4/Xbox One some actual polish
I don't think they will be by anyone, but I sincerely hope they don't acquire SEGA. Certain franchises like maybe Yakuza and definitely Sonic could probably continue to thrive on Xbox, but Atlus is basically dead in the water if they get acquired by Microsoft considering how historically bad their games have sold on their platforms. Granted, this means more stuff like SMT/Persona on PC (which is already happening), but still
Considering this is one of Bethesda's first newly announced games following the acquisition being made public knowledge I wouldn't be surprised if this one is solely on Xbox/PC. Games like Starfield and TESVI are in a way grayer area due to them supposedly being in development for longer than there were talks of having MS acquire the company in general, and Elder Scrolls already has a legacy on non-Xbox platforms to begin with, I can see those remaining multiplat or timed exclusives, while this could potentially be one of their first completely exclusive titles under the Microsoft umbrella
It could also probably be a good answer on Microsoft's end to Sony Interactive Entertainment securing Insomniac and Spider-Man's games for the forseeable future since that's another major Disney IP under Marvel
@Thretosix The fact that you're openly voicing your opinion on Sony in this exact article equating them to an abusive ex-girlfriend shows who the real console warrior is in this thread. I think you need to grow a pair. I hope that isn't a grown ass man behind the keyboard. Your opinion on this matter matters every bit as insignificantly as anyone else's, especially if you're just here to mope about a brick that plays games and people are actually being reasonable with you and stating their case.
@Thretosix The Game Pass quote is completely valid for them. You have to realize they just don't have the model or the money that Microsoft has. Xbox isn't a single console anymore. Microsoft have expanded so largely that they don't need just hardware in order to make a profit. Nintendo and Sony practically have no other option but to rely on console sales because that's what drives their business more than anything. PlayStation's core is still the dedicated gaming hardware they make, and they don't have the resources to do stuff like expanding their reach to other devices like having a cloud gaming service, or day one releases on PC like Microsoft does. You have to understand their perspective on this matter. In the context of what they have to do to profit off of their gaming division they literally don't have the money to turn PlayStation into such a wide and ambitious ecosystem of platforms that are interconnected like Microsoft does. Sony isn't nearly as much of a major monolithic tech giant and neither is Nintendo. They need the dedicated hardware to succeed, and thus it is more sustainable for them specifically to push that hardware and get people to buy it because they can't effectively manage something as ambitious as an entire family of devices being connected all at once without their own hardware tanking in revenue. That's why they literally only JUST started providing games on PC, and they're probably not going to be offering them nearly as regularly as Microsoft does without risking people gaining the perception they don't need to buy their hardware anymore to enjoy their games.
And yes, last generation Sony was completely right to clown on Microsoft for a lot of things. You can't act like the Xbox One's policies or their overreliance on Kinect which skyrocketed the launch Xbox One prices was a good thing, especially given the console was weaker power wise by default next to the PS4 which was already cheaper by 100 bucks which made it instantly easy to decide which console to buy from a casual perspective. They literally won the generation and left Microsoft to die as soon as they announced the PS4 would be able to play used games, you'd be able to pass games to friends and still play them without any sort of license, and that the console wouldn't require an online connection for basic functions. I hope it's a closer race this time around. Microsoft under Mattrick was the complete antithesis of consumer-friendly and when Phil came in and came really close to turning things around, it was already way too late. Fortunately, it looks like they're learning from their mistakes and being more transparent, but it's not like Xbox and PlayStation are just completely flawless. They both have inequalities all around. I personally found Sony's stance on crossplay and censorship bafflingly stupid, which made Switch and PC the go to platform for select Japanese titles in a lot of cases for me. They're in the process of amending crossplay concerns, but they could be doing a lot more and opening up a little bit.
@gollumb82 The industry's already pretty grown up. Hell Reggie, Shawn Layden and Phil Spencer all appeared on stage to give the opening monologue for the Game Awards in 2018. The vocal minority is just really vocal
@Kefka2589 I myself am getting my Xbox stuff on PC but either way I'm investing in all three platforms at various points during the coming console generation. Really hope Series X/S are able to pull MS out of the blood soaked waters of the last generation, but the consoles so far have no hook for me personally. It needs its Demon's Souls moment.
@Fenbops See I'd be cautious about that too but since the PS5 is practically going to be my only TV-tethered console I'm not losing sleep over it. I actually kinda dig the angular look of it as it reminds me a bit of the Xbox 360 S when stood up, which is how I'm planning on positioning it too.
@evan23 Ok well then clearly it was meant to be like that
Haven't been following Xbox in general nearly as often as Nintendo or PlayStation, I only heard about Microsoft planning to unify their UIs for the Xbox platform across all devices so it's probably intentional
Coming from someone opting for the PS5 over it I do have to say I dig the minimalist designs of both consoles. They'll definitely blend in way better with current entertainment setups due to their simplistic physical appearances, and I can see Series S especially being a good shelf console due to how compact it is. The UI also looks massively improved.
I'm pretty sure I saw the Disney+ app on the Xbox dashboard somewhere during the Series X tour video that had Malik and Value Village Austin Evans earlier last month so it wouldn't surprise me, especially since it's already confirmed for PlayStation 5. Packing it in with Game Pass would be a crazy value proposition, but I doubt it's coming for a while
@Revengercm Ok take that statement but gameplay then.
Death Stranding, Last of Us and Order 1886 are literally the only proper PS exclusives I can actively think of that are nothing but actual walking simulators.
@BlueOcean I will fight anyone who said God of War or Spider-Man had mediocre .
You get a pass on Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. They have lots of lore but they don't actually have proper narratives outside surface level stuff like "a plague is enveloping the "X setting of game""
@BlueOcean I would pay physical cash to anyone who actually can get through games like Demon's Souls, Horizon, Bloodborne, God of War or Spider-Man just by walking and hitting a button every few hours.
@Mckilmer My faith in Crystal has been shaken a bit because I didn't love Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Avengers was AGGRESSIVELY average, but the ex-Bioware and SIE talent makes me hope that something good will come out of that studio, especially given I don't gravitate towards a lot of Xbox's first party IPs compared to Sony or Nintendo.
@Mckilmer The SIE Santa Monica alumni is what really gives me faith in that studio. God of War would've been my GOTY for 2018 had Marvel's Spider-Man not been as amazing as it was.
@Mckilmer Spencer was a blessing for the company. I do think by the time he came the damage was probably as close to irreparable, but after the Bethesda acquisition, I'm not going to say that's going to be what makes them come out on top, but the competition just got a whole lot more interesting instead of what I expected with Sony cleaning house with them again.

Packing it in with Game Pass would be a crazy value proposition, but I doubt it's coming for a while
Re: Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is Completely Sustainable The Way It Is
@Revengercm Ok take that statement but gameplay then.
Death Stranding, Last of Us and Order 1886 are literally the only proper PS exclusives I can actively think of that are nothing but actual walking simulators.
Re: Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is Completely Sustainable The Way It Is
@BlueOcean I will fight anyone who said God of War or Spider-Man had mediocre .
You get a pass on Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. They have lots of lore but they don't actually have proper narratives outside surface level stuff like "a plague is enveloping the "X setting of game""
Re: Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is Completely Sustainable The Way It Is
@BlueOcean I would pay physical cash to anyone who actually can get through games like Demon's Souls, Horizon, Bloodborne, God of War or Spider-Man just by walking and hitting a button every few hours.
Re: Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is Completely Sustainable The Way It Is
@Mckilmer My faith in Crystal has been shaken a bit because I didn't love Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Avengers was AGGRESSIVELY average, but the ex-Bioware and SIE talent makes me hope that something good will come out of that studio, especially given I don't gravitate towards a lot of Xbox's first party IPs compared to Sony or Nintendo.
Re: Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is Completely Sustainable The Way It Is
@Mckilmer The SIE Santa Monica alumni is what really gives me faith in that studio. God of War would've been my GOTY for 2018 had Marvel's Spider-Man not been as amazing as it was.
Re: Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is Completely Sustainable The Way It Is
@Mckilmer Spencer was a blessing for the company. I do think by the time he came the damage was probably as close to irreparable, but after the Bethesda acquisition, I'm not going to say that's going to be what makes them come out on top, but the competition just got a whole lot more interesting instead of what I expected with Sony cleaning house with them again.
