Avowed has only been live in its standard edition form for just about a week now, but it sounds like it's doing pretty well both critically and commercially - at least in the eyes of Xbox developer Obsidian Entertainment.
As part of a recent newsletter over at Bloomberg, game director Carrie Patel touched on various bits of Avowed's development - and its launch, where Bloomberg notes that "players have raved about the game, and the company said it is happy with sales so far".
Given the game went number one on Steam last week, it sounds like Avowed has sold rather well then, despite being included in Xbox Game Pass on day one. Game Pass is only applicable for the Xbox and Microsoft Store PC versions though - Steam users would have to purchase the game, and purchase it they seem to have done.
The chat also provides us with plenty of direct quotes from Patel, including some interesting comments about the team potentially building on Avowed's foundations for another title. Bloomberg says "it seems more likely" that the team will expand on Avowed for a future project than start on something from scratch - and here's what Patel said herself on that topic:
"Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it,"
Ultimately, it'll be down to Microsoft to greenlight what's next for Obsidian's Avowed team - the team hasn't committed to any sort of DLC or sequel to the game just yet. What we do know is that another portion of the Xbox developer is working on The Outer Worlds 2 right now, which is expected to be out later this year.

"Happy with the sales" makes me really curious about what numbers we´re talking about.
Good they are happy regardless and great for them with the positive reception of the game
Removed - unconstructive
Glad it has done well for them. Personally the more I’m playing it the more the original gloss is wearing off. Still enjoying it and will finish my play through.
It’s a nice world. But it’s a very very shallow world. Has graphical bugs during cutscenes (series S) to name a few.
But the dev wants to do more in the world so there’s an excellent base to build upon and improve. - and as it’s sold well etc there’s more chance of a sequel
@mac_da_man Don't forget the "...so far", it's early days and can all change. But they likely had to come out and say something as a lot of the culture war team are posting many videos about how it's failed due to Steam concurrent players. As usual they have little to no information apart from one metric but claim to have all the answers. Sad.
I’m really enjoying the game so far. I’m 10 hours in and have loved it on Xbox, so I’m pleased that it’s doing well on Steam.
@themightyant I despise the using steam player count for anything. It’s such a bad metric
I have gone from thinking the game is good to feeling like it is brilliant and I am playing a tonne of it. 34 hours in now.
I'd be curious as to how much this cost to make though. In many ways it doesn't feel AAA and I suspect adding some of that AAA 'polish' would have been expensive and added very little.
Anyway, I think it is wonderful and I hope we get more in the future.
Good for them ☺️ very well deserved
Oh...!? So they are "happy". Good for them.
I won't finish this game and to be honest, avowed is already gone from my SSD.
I have better things to do with my free time...
I'm sad for this game... But yeah : everybody makes mistakes in life !!
I won't hold my breath for
the outer world 2....
Glad I purchased it personally and has been well worth it for me. I hope they will either release dlc or plan a follow up as its just such an interesting world & lore that they have created.
Enjoyed it enough that I am on my 2nd Avowed play through & am squeezing in fresh runs at both Pillars of Eternity games to refresh myself on the world lore and references that are in Avowed.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I'm usually for more transparency, but I can understand why Ubisoft and others are currently lobbying Valve for remove it as it seems to primarily be used by rage-baiters as evidence a game has failed, usually to give their poorly reasoned conspiracy theories some weight. Though they will probably just latch onto something else for their grift.
So far I am having a blast with the game on gamepass. I will probably purchase it on steam somewhere down the line. Obsidian and xbox have struck gold again.
Only played an hour of the game myself going to complete Hogwarts first but by the comments I'm seeing for the game up here I'm in for a good time!
Really enjoying it so far about 20 hours in and I'm still in the 2nd area. The world is beautiful and I'm having a lot of fun just exploring it slowly and taking a bunch of screenshots. I'm hoping they'll make dlc or we'll get a sequel in the future.
@themightyant Those folks don't care about games or gaming they do it for YouTube engagement & ad revenue. Bottom feeders the lot of them but folks still eat it up & parrot their bull 💩

Well now they can “save” any project releasing it later on PS/N where they get more sales anyways.
I love how it focuses on the essentials with beautiful graphics, great combat, great story, Choices that have consequences and simple gameplay mechanics. That's what we want—to get back to the essence of video games. Not everyone wants super complicated games with a steep learning curve. It's not perfect; it lacks interaction with NPCs and the liveliness of the visited places, but overall, everything else is very positive, and I'm having fun. That means the game is successful, at least for me!
Didn't they say the same exact thing about hifi rush?
They should follow up with not just avowed 2, but with pillars of eternity 3 in full turn-based mode, and bill it as Microsoft’s version of baldurs gate 3. And do that, but in their own way. They have the exposure now, and Microsoft should support and invite this.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner that’s how I felt. I loved it at first but during the second area that really started to wear off. It felt kind of shallow, the battles started to get repetitive (and kind of annoying)
@fizban3332 yep, when rumours of poor sales started cropping up, Aaron Greenburg said that Hi-Fi Rush was "a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations,", which clearly wasn't true considering that shortly after that Microsoft closed Tango Gameworks and washed its hands of the IP.
@Medic_alert Same. This game was a 7 first few hours for me and a solid 8.5 currently. 25 hours in.
@LordDieALot I'm edging towards a 9. I really love it and it takes a lot for me to really get into a new game.
@Medic_alert Quite the wild love story for this game for me. First 4 hours I was really liking it. Once Marius joined my party I really started to wonder if I would finish this game. Hours 4-8 were a rough time. Once I kicked him to the curb for Giatta I really started to get into the story big time. I also ran into a side quest around hour 10 that just clicked. Beautiful game. Can't wait to play more.
I am so glad that I was on point about Avowed killing it on PC! It is so good that I decided not to only play it on game pass, but also buy it on Xbox and Steam. Avowed will be a new glorious game series that we will be playing after 20 years! The game is pretty much perfect on their first try, I wonder how mind-blowing Avowed 7 will be!
I'm 24hrs in & sleep deprived between getting gaming in after work & family duties are over. It felt like an 8/10 for me, but honestly should be higher if it is causing sleep deprivation😁
For those that criticize some elements of it, I'm glad I don't need a masters degree in RPG gaming. For a casual gamer, Avowed is great!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I think it's a bad metric for a single player experience since there is no need to play the game during "peak hours". People just play it when they want to.
I normally don't get to game until like 9 or 10 at night - but I only play single player games and don't need a player count to enjoy the game.
But for a multi-player game, it's definitely concerning if the player counts are low.
I guess, in some ways, it's interesting to see if it's super popular for a snapshot in time, but I don't think it's any actual gauge of a single player game's success.
Then again, it also ignores the possibilities that the game is being played on other repositories/storefronts that it may be available (Epic, GOG, etc. - where applicable).
I really enjoyed the game and I hope we get some DLC/sequel in the future.
@GamingFan4Lyf I guess, in some ways, it's interesting to see if it's super popular for a snapshot in time, but I don't think it's any actual gauge of a single player game's success.
Exactly that, its great for showing how popular a game is at launch where you have a high peak showing who jumped in. Like you could see BG3 popping off in real time with a peak of 875k just on steam. But for other games the numbers are usually a fraction of that so outside of genre defining games everything else is similar.
I played the game for about 13 hours and i love it so far. Exploration and combat are the highlights for me. The world is colorfull and you see biomes and different aesthetics and more vivid colors that you don't see often in RPGs. The story is also fine and as you proceed into the game it becomes more interesting. Some side quests were also really good. Very good and fun game!
Another fan here! Started off having fun already, with the fluent combat, great visuals, good acting and nice world building.
Now, 12 hours in only in the first area, I’m absolutely having a blast. Game went from an 8/10 to a 9/10 for me.
Good news for the devs!

In response to others, there's absolutely nothing wrong with using Steam numbers to get a very good idea of how a game is doing across other platforms. If you're pretending otherwise, you're the one with an agenda.
