It's finally almost time for the classic Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye 007 to make its Xbox debut, including as part of the Xbox Game Pass library and the Rare Replay collection, with the release date set for Friday, January 27th!
You can check out the release trailer above, which shows off the kind of visuals we can expect from this Xbox version, as well as a bit of split-screen multiplayer footage. Keep in mind that there's sadly no online multiplayer here.
Rare has already confirmed that this Xbox debut for GoldenEye 007 will feature native 16:9 resolution at up to 4K Ultra HD resolution, alternative control options, and of course, a whole bunch of Xbox achievements.

Excited for GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass? Tell us down in the comments below.

Very excited about this addition! Time to get some friends over. Hoping they add online at a later date but for now, all good
Edit: shame a lot of others don’t agree. Talk about preservation and accessibility being good in the gaming industry; and then Goldeneye, one of the classics though maybe not aged well, and one that was stuck in licensing hell, gets a re-release in two different styles on two modern platforms and…. You guessed it…. Everyone ***** whinges. This is another local multiplayer offering on a service that families are starting to adopt. So yea, glad it’s getting these releases finally.
Saw Nintendo annouce it was hitting their service on Friday, thought they may have "spoilt" something from the direct later, but I'm doubting there is any "surprises"
Yei! Friday I will be running home to play it...
"For England, James...".
Interested to see how the younger people react to Goldeneye in this modern age
I'm hoping there is the option to fix the aiming to the centre of the screen like in modern FPS. The free aiming mechanic was fine back in the day, but I think my brain will struggle to readjust to it.
I still cant understand why anyone wants it - but at least here for those that do.
Loved this title on the N64, but things have moved a long way since those days and the last time I put it on an emulator I switched off after 5 minutes. I hope this version has some tweeks that make it great again
Oh dear what a waste of someone’s time.
@Dusk_Actual It's going to be interesting to see how oldies react to play this after decades too.
There's a hefty bit of nostalgia going on here. I think some of us will bounce off of experiencing it again.
Edit: just watched the trailer... that music. Oppfff... yea, memories. I'm going to give it a try at least.
Majority will download, play for 5 minutes and then delete it. It was a master piece for its time and many grew up playing this game. The split screen co op free for all was obviously revolutionary at the time.
Like most people I’d of been much more excited about this if it had online multiplayer, I feel they really dropped the ball by letting Nintendo have that as an exclusive. The campaign was amazing back in the day but I wouldn’t say I’m a rush to revisit it
I'm just gonna sit in the menu screen for an hour!
Its true that this is hard to play nowadays on an N64. The graphics, frame rate and controls make it pretty rough.
However, if this version can fix all that, it should be a wonderful experience, especially for those of us who played back in the day. The base game is superb 👌
Loved this on N64. Mixed feelings about it now. As others said, it was great...back then. Games have moved on so much since those days. I'll still load it up though..if only for the memories.
This is great news, Can't wait to replay my childhood game..
Nostalgia trip pure and simple, I'm here for it.
Definitely gonna play it since I never grew up with a N64.
We've been waiting for this forever. Hopefully it will be a better experience than when I played it recently on N64. It was shockingly outdated in almost every way, graphics, controls, sound, framerate etc.
Will be cool to fire it up and have a game for nostalgia but without online play not sure it’s going to get more than 30 mins play time
No online? Lol what the f***
I personally could care less about online. It’s going to be a blast to play through the campaign again!
@Dezzy70 why? Because you don’t want it?
To be fair Goldeneye felt dated even back then with the slow motion gameplay. Still it is cool to have it as far as gaming preservation goes.
As far as I understand the game will be free if you have the Rare Replay game?
@belmont Yeah that's what I understand. Game Pass FTW
Goldeneye has aged really badly, I loved it back on the N64 but won’t be revisiting. This seems like a niche release to me.
The times me and my friends would play goldeneye and later perfect dark huddled around a small TV are some of my most favourite gaming memories from that period. Even the music just brings it all flooding back. I look forward to the nostalgia trip
Finally! I'm extremely happy to have this as part of Rare Replay. This is one of my favourite games. I've played lots of shooters since then but not as good as this in terms of gameplay, story and the balance between freedom and objectives. For instance, the Wii reimagining (not remake) was a let-down. The highest level of difficulty really makes you think and analyse every possible action in the original. It's the sophisticated gameplay and interaction with the environment that make it great. It has a lot of WTF realistic moments. It has the multiplayer mode I played the most on N64. People complaining about this release as if it was the N64 rom should play Perfect Dark on Xbox.
I also played Jet Force Gemini recently on Rare Replay. It has a native widescreen mode and surround audio. After having to readjust to the weird aiming for an hour or so, the whole game was a lot of fun, I replayed the levels until I completed all the milestones. It's awesome. Most Rare's games are addictive, fun and have great audio and graphics. I also play new games but few hook me as much. Rare Replay really needs Goldeneye and it's finally coming after so many years, that's enough reason for celebration. Obviously, it won't get Nintendo's IPs Donkey Kong and Star Fox but it's the best games collection ever.
Finally, it's great to see this game officially available on modern platforms again and ill be giving it a go. A bit of a shame its not the leaked XBLA version and it appears to be a rather basic emulation of it but I have that and a mouse and keyboard version on my PC.
That said I hope we get another print of RARE Replay with this and the other digital games on the disc and for me it still plays great even today
will give it a whirl, inbetween MHR and AoE.
nice bit of nostalgia
@Banjo- Man, I would shake oyur hand as I know this one is one of your faves .
I highly doubt I’ll play this, but I have fond memories playing this game with my brother and neighborhood friends every single day. I can still remember all the secret walls you can go through in the multiplayer map “Complex”. I used to throw proximity mines all over them 😅
I also remember the story mission “Faculty” and if you go to one of the restrooms, jump on the toilet and spin around several times, you’ll teleport into the ceiling and unlock paintball mode.
I would like to keep those memories in a good light because I know if I replay the game with modern controls and whatnot, I will be disappointed.
@HarmanSmith Only thing that is left is the revival of Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Viva Piñata, Jet Force Gemini... 😊👌
OH HELL YES. FINALLY. Going to have it on the Switch for online play and campaigns on the go, and on my Xbox for the big-screen 4K treatment and couch multiplayer. Still wish this was the fully-completed-but-abandoned 360 remake, but beggars can't be choosers. Not even kidding when I say this was my most anticipated Xbox drop for the foreseeable future, but I'm also a massive James Bond fan.
@Banjo- hey, one can only hope, right?
BTW, playing Conker on the Rare Replay collection.
I’m keeping my expectations low on this. Last time I played it was on the N64. It was a blast back then but I’ve heard how bad the game has aged. So keeping that in mind before I play, hopefully I’m not too disappointed.
@Banjo- personally I’d want a Rare all-stars kart racer. A spiritual successor to Diddy Kong Racing really.
As soon as I heard that the Switch Version was releasing on 27th, I expected this to be announced soon after and here it is.
I don't know if I'll bother, maybe I'll play the campaign again. I spent so many hours playing the MP back in the day but I can't see myself playing it today. I do think its an important game to 'preserve' and great that those who want, can now play it - I expect many gamers never got the chance as they either weren't born or never had an N64.
It may well be a case of keep the rose tinted 'memories' intact than be disappointed it hasn't aged well, maybe even not a 'great' game anymore and I think I would rather remember the 'great' times...
Played it on N64 recently.
Aged brilliantly. Far better than most modern FPS.
Proper campaign. Great controls. No rubbish gimmicks, no online nonsense.
One for people with taste
Indeed, For England, James.
I have a physical copy of Rare Replay, so does that mean I get Goldeneye for free? Or is that only for the digital copy of Rare Replay? Either way, I have Game Pass, so I'll be downloading it. Series X version for achievements and Switch version for online play.
Hmmm. Wonder if we'll be able to get a multi-player game going without having a dual PhD in computer science and user experience design <cough>Halo Infinite<cough>.
Also looking forward to my 8 year-old "pooping on" (as he likes to say) the graphics.
Finally the N64 holy trinity together again (Goldeneye, Turok 2 and Perfect Dark)on XBox Series X.
Thank the gods.
@TheGrizMan
No because it costs some sort of time and money.
When new things could be done instead.
@Titntin I mean most people who're interested are either playing it through Game Pass or getting it free by owning the Rare Replay, so nothing lost if they don't like it after all this time.
I have no nostalgia for this, and thus no interest. But happy for the people who have been waiting for it for so long - enjoy!
@shoeses Absolutely mate, that's the beauty of GP.
Much as I don't honestly see what the point is, I'm likely to to give it a go anyway seeing as I'm paid up! Who knows, maybe it will grab me again and me and the misses will play couch co op for hours like we did when it was first released
@Sebatrox
I did tell them 😂
Good for those who like classic games but this isn't for me, I prefer more modern visuals and don't like the idea of spending hundreds on new consoles to play games from 20+ years ago.
Now if this was remade then that's a different story, I'd deffo be up for playing that, though I don't know who would be able to greenlight that? Xbox, Nintendo or Amazon (who own the 007 brand now)
Can't wait to humiliate my kids in this, going to be a blast lol!!
Yes excellent.
Yes! Thought we’d hear about this tonight but so happy it’s actually happening. Been over a year since we found out about this being on Xbox so I well looking forward to Friday!
Yes, let's all get excited and praise Microsoft for putting a near 26 year old game on Game Pass. Kudos.
@Sebatrox I think what you mean is a remake of a remaster of a remaster.
@Sebatrox
You never know, they might well do
Which is pointless waste of time in my opinion.
@ParsnipHero I think that Diddy Kong Racing is the best "kart" racing game so yeah, make a reimagining without Diddy that belongs to Nintendo although it was created by Rare and we have a new winner.
@HarmanSmith Awesome. It looks great on Xbox, doesn't it?
@Kaloudz Xenia Onatopp? She always did enjoy a good squeeze.
@Banjo- I hate to say this now, but did you know that Rare Replay includes sensible controls for Jet Force Gemini? You have to go into the options and choose the "Advanced" control scheme. Basically, it allows you to have dual-stick aim in aiming mode, but normal platform controls outside of that.
(The vanilla N64 version included this option already, but it was a weird southpaw setup like Turok, which doesn't translate well to an Xbox controller.)
If you took issue with the aiming for any other reason, then disregard!
@Titntin I still think it plays better and has more interesting missions and levels than 99% of first person shooters today. You just have to get used to the controls.
Goldeneye has stood the test of time almost as well as Mario 64 and OOT imo.
@Banjo- Yes, indeed! Rare Replay is a great collection and this is the first time I play Conker .
@smoreon Yes, I played with the "modern controls" included in the Rare Replay version of Jet Force Gemini. I think that the aiming is still weird but I got used to it, got better, beat the game 100% and really enjoyed it. Actually, after some time I was very good because I knew how far I had to press the stick and the weak spots I had to shoot and the appropriate weapons to use. This is one of the few shooters I played switching weapons all the time and it reminded me how I played Doom Eternal, one of the few modern shooters that is really awesome. I only missed a few ammunition expansions because they can be anywhere and you can only collect them when you have the corresponding weapons but still found most of them. The game is a blast! A sequel with modern UI, map and other quality of life improvements would be a dream.
@Raffles Indeed and the Xbox treatment will make it as enjoyable as the Perfect Dark remaster.
@Banjo- yea, it really is. The multi vehicle mechanic approach is unchallenged even today.
Rare have so many characters & locations you could pull from too.
Banjo, Joanna Dark, The Pirate Lord and Sabreman all facing off in Jet Force Gemini themed track? I’m there!
@ParsnipHero That sounds really good! 👌I love the water sections, much better than Nintendo's boring attempts in Mario Kart 7 and 8.
@EvenStephen7 Goldeneye 007 and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse are my two most anticipated games of 2023... also because I know that Fable 4 will be released in 2027 🤣.
@K1LLEGAL I'm absolutely thrilled and extatic that Goldeneye is being re-released!
Looking forward to revisiting this classic. The HD version of Perfect Dark was a great update so this should be too.
So if you own rare replay, it will automatically be included in that package?
@NintendoByNature Yes, but apparently only with digital copies?
Oh well, the entire Rare Replay goes on sale for something like $7, so Goldeneye on its own can't be too expensive, I'd think/hope.
@UltimateOtaku91 Amazon dont own all of James bond only 50% of him they purchaed MGM not the full rights to all of James bond so not fully Thier choice , the rest is owned by eon productions and they are no pushover when it comes to the character
@K1LLEGAL yes the negative comments blow my mind!
Enhanced? DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
@smoreon good stuff. I only have the digital version anyway, but good to know.
Yes!! Finally I will be playing this tomorrow
