It's been a week since we published the Pure Xbox Game of the Year results for 2023, and the winner ended up proving pretty controversial as Starfield took the crown over the likes of Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2.
In fact, we've even come in for some criticism for it - despite the fact it was all based on votes and we didn't have a say in the decision! The process began on December 15th, and we received over 5,000 votes from Pure Xbox fans in all.
While we've obviously informed you of the top ten, we've left out quite a few statistics that you might be interested in. For example, how many votes did Starfield actually get? How did the likes of Lies of P and Sea of Stars not make the list? And how did the scores compare between registered Pure Xbox members and one-off visitors?
Let's start with that top ten. As you may recall, we asked you to give five points to your Game of the Year, followed by four points for second place, three points for third, and so on. In the table below, you can see the votes and final score for each game, along with its average ranking from 1-5 (1 being a five-point score) for every person that voted for it.
Game | Votes | Score | Avg Rank Per-Voter (from 1-5) |
---|---|---|---|
Starfield | 628 | 2,327 | 2.3 |
Baldur's Gate 3 | 347 | 1,358 | 2.1 |
Hi-Fi RUSH | 337 | 1,139 | 2.6 |
Alan Wake 2 | 288 | 1,014 | 2.5 |
Hogwarts Legacy | 266 | 854 | 2.8 |
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty | 234 | 723 | 2.9 |
Forza Motorsport | 234 | 722 | 2.9 |
Diablo IV | 225 | 635 | 3.2 |
Resident Evil 4 | 183 | 593 | 2.8 |
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | 191 | 543 | 3.2 |
If we compare this list between registered Pure Xbox members and those who are either regular lurkers (in which case, please come and join us!) or one-off visitors, the top ten looks pretty similar on the whole.
The differences are that if we were basing this on PX members alone, Hi-Fi RUSH would have finished in second place above Baldur's Gate 3, Dead Space would have climbed all the way up to sixth position, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty would have dropped to ninth, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor would have fallen to 14th.
So, what about the rest? Which games just failed to crack that top ten? Well, Dead Space is the one that only slightly missed out on 11th place when combining all the results together (it got a score of 503 compared to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's 543), while Lies of P and Sea of Stars followed fairly closely behind.
Here's a look at the results for 11th-25th, with the overall score in brackets:
- 11. Dead Space (503)
- 12. Lies of P (389)
- 13. Sea of Stars (382)
- 14. Cocoon (266)
- 15. Assassin's Creed Mirage (244)
- 16. Dead Island 2 (210)
- 17. Remnant 2 (208)
- 18. Atomic Heart (196)
- 19. Robocop: Rogue City (194)
- 20. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon (188)
- 21. Ghostwire: Tokyo (176)
- 22. Like a Dragon Gaiden (161)
- 23. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (154)
- 24. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (149)
- 25. Street Fighter 6 (148)
There we go then! That's the Pure Xbox Game of the Year roundup for 2023 in the books, and as you can see, Starfield was the runaway winner by quite some distance. Many will attribute that to its wide accessibility as a result of Xbox Game Pass, but it also had the second average highest ranking of any game from those who voted for it.
The grand relaunch of Pure Xbox took place back in March of 2020, and since then we've given out four Pure Xbox GOTY awards based on your votes - those were Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Halo Infinite, Elden Ring and Starfield. Between those four, which do you think is the best? Let us know down in the comments below!

I really enjoyed Halo Infinite campaign at launch (many time since) and everything points to the MP being much better now. That said of the 4 listed Halo would be my favorite followed by Ori and then Elden Ring rounding out my top 3.
Ori's pretty much perfect, unlike the other three where I can think of aspects I wish were different.
Well with the winner they do say
Love is blind, in this case it definitely was.
So many more Xbox games in 2023 deserve that number one spot over the winner.
Just my xboxer opinion a slightly above average game won.
Having said what I did above, my year in review said I put 60 hours, my second highest game length played of 2023.
My brain still can’t work that out 😂😂😂
I guess Ill have to give Starfield another go then! Just couldnt get into it unlike previous Bethesda games…
Of the four winners, Elden Ring for me by a country mile.
BG3 is the best on the list imo. I get that it was late in the year and not many played it to score it.
Certainly many of the other games deserved to be in front of starfield.
It doesn't need to be the 'best' game ever to win these type of things. It just needs to be in MORE peoples Top 5 to accumulate a LOT more points. It's not the 'best' game of the year in my opinion but its not a broken mess of a game that just can't be 'enjoyed'.
There are people with hundreds of hours spent in Starfield so even if it's not 'their' number 1 game of the year, it will no doubt get voted for - therefore accumulate points. It had the most votes by quite some margin and even if those nearly 300 more votes were voting 3rd place or lower, that's a LOT of points more to the overall score...
So why get angry over some game that maybe more 'niche' for want of a better word, not necessarily mass appeal game that you loved wasn't voted #1 for whatever reaffirmation purposes you seem to need, and accept that this shows that some games are more popular and/or enjoyed by more gamers than others despite the 'Vocal' minority who try and bash everything....
Just so I fully understand the poll results, @FraserG, if you were to take the average position results alone, BG3 would actually be the game that would have taken the top spot with an average of 2.1, yes? Starfield would then have been placed second at 2.3...?
Ultimately, I have little doubt that BG3 is the best game to ever release, and so would have topped this poll had it been voted for by as many as voted for Starfield.
Quite simply, as of today, people have had 100 days to play, and complete, Starfield, whereas BG3 has had just 24 days. Both has obviously fewer days at the time of the poll. Both are huge games, and whereas most will have had time to finish Starfield in the time between its release and the poll, very few will have finished BG3 in that time. Also, Starfield was available on the Game Pass. Baldur's Gate 3 was not. That means many, many more people will have played Starfield as opposed to BG3. Each of these factors played against BG3, and played into the hands of Starfield...
@Fiendish-Beaver Yep, that's correct.
It's gotta be Elden Ring for me. Fantastic game world, great combat, great story. Cant wait for DLC. Loved the look of Ori but couldn't get into it. Starfield was great and I want to jump back in, but idk for some reason it's just not giving me that 'gotta play more' vibe. As for Halo Infinite, never played any Halo game.
I've seen on IGN in the comments section, as soon as someone says they like Starfield, the whole community attacks them, claiming they are either a fanboy, or deluded.
Now I am not saying that is the case here at Pure Xbox, but it's a shame that people just can't accept that some people actually think Starfield is a great game.
I’m sort of surprised at how badly Street Fighter 6 did…
@jedinite Elden Ring by a country mile. The best game I’ve ever played, at least in my eyes.
I'm surprised Ghostwire Tokyo didnt go higher. That game was a lot of fun once I got the hang of it. I really liked Starfield so I'm glad it got number one by such a huge margin.
So this is essentially an award for the game most people played rather than the best game. Ok.
Glad for Starfield and Hi-fi rush, but surprised by sea of stars and street fighter 6
My 2023 Xbox GoTY list:
Diablo 4
Phantom Liberty DLC
Jedi Survivor
Baldurs Gate 3
Alan Wake 2
Hogwarts Legacy
Dead Island 2
My list isn't necessarily in order because you can't compare a game like Hogwarts Legacy to a game like Diablo 4 lol that being said, 2023 had some fantastic games released. 2024 looks to be another stacked year & I'm hoping we start to see the fruits of Microsoft's studios buying spree. The Xbox exclusives for 2024 already look better than PlayStation, in fact I'm extremely disappointed with my upcoming PS5 games list. The only thing I'm looking forward to is Final fantasy 7 remake part 2, Sony hasn't announced any 1st party exclusives for 2024 either so there's not much to look forward to IMO. With Xbox 2024 looks a lot better with Avowed, Stalker 2, Hellblade 2 and south of midnight. There maybe even more Xbox exclusives but these are the ones I'm personally interested in!
Long Live Xbox, Happy gaming ✌️
Starfield has been the popular bandwagon game for the internet to hate on for some reason, but despite that it's been my game of the year.
Halo Infinite for me, it takes up a lot of my precious gaming hours, and will continue to do so, I reckon.
I have really enjoyed playing Starfield and hope to continue that with the updates in 2024. Happy new year everyone!
@Fiendish-Beaver I was going to make all kinds of dumb remarks about you statement but honestly I am really happy you like it so much. For me that game was Morrowind it's the pinnacle of what Bethesda did best. I am actually downloading bg3 on my rog to play through it an I did by the disc version for Xbox. I have played it for about 20 hours just hasn't caught me yet
Out of the 4 PX GOTYs, I’ve only played Ori and Starfield. I’d give it to Ori by a long shot as the best…I even liked Blind Forest more than Will of the Wisps (but I basically played them back to back).
@FraserG @Fiendish-Beaver Appreciate the transparency here. There is no perfect way to make an award system, ALL have flaws and will favour one title or another depending on the rules.
Here it’s more of a popularity contest. The biggest exclusive of the year - Starfield - gets a healthy advantage, not least it was free/included on Game Pass, and many more people played it.
That’s not a criticism btw, just a fair assessment of the methodology. Had you done it by average there are some other biases with that method too, e.g. more niche games are more likely to be played by people that like that niche, and more likely to score that niche higher. With fewer players/ratings it’s easier to skew results somewhat and end up with some very funky / unpopular results.
TLDR: There is no perfect system and it’s just a bit of fun. Like what you like, at the end of the day we shouldn’t need validation. (But human instinct wants it regardless)
That all said I’m STILL surprised Starfield would have come second by average. I guess it resonated with more people that I thought and they were less bothered by the lows / flaws, than the highs. We all like different things
P.S. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Given the methodology, Starfield had a healthy advantage despite the issues so many had with it.
It was a very mediocre game imo, and the fact it's Xboxs Goty may offer insight as to why mine hasn't been switched on for 6 weeks. That said, there's games I'm very interested in coming this year, so I'm hoping for better and it would be great to see a strong uncontesdedly excellent xbox exclusive top this list next year. For what its worth, I thought HiFi rush was xboxs best exclusive this year, and Sea of Stars was my fave played on Game Pass.
I think on any metric 2023 was great year for games in general, and Xbox most specifically. I might not have been impressed with Forza MS and Starfield, but plenty of people love em, and they are exclusive to MS and the subject of much attention. Given two big ticket launches, a bunch more promised and the extra resources ABK will bring, Xbox have a lot to be happy about right now regardless of where this old man plays
Happy New Year Pure - lots to look forward to in 2024!
@Titntin I agree with Hi-Fi Rush, and was surprised by Starfield taking #1 like you. But as I pointed out above ALL awards methods have flaws. Average is prone to perhaps bigger problems too, especially outlier and unexpected results.
E.g. You mentioned Metacritic but for about a year the best rated game EVER on Switch was not "Zelda BotW" or "Mario Odyssey", both 97s, it was "The House in Fata Morgana" which is a visual novel and most have probably never even heard of it. Since then there have been a few more critic reviews (currently 10) and it still sits in 3rd overall at a still mighty 96.
I've not played it, but I have no doubt it's a excellent game in the genre... but best game on Switch period? Probably only with a small sample size, and only with those reviewers likely being visual novel fans. But if you make the sample size too big you damn indies and smaller titles. Ultimately damned if you do, damned if you don't. There is no perfect system.
Hard agree 2023 has been great though and roll on 2024 which will be good for games but terrible for my wallet!
Definitely NO perfect system because people differ in what they enjoy. For example, I do not enjoy Turn Based Combat and no matter how 'good' the story or anything else maybe, the fact it has a mechanic I cannot stand would obviously have a big impact on whether I play a game, let alone rate it as one of 'my' top 5 games of the year.
If I won't even play games like Gears Tactics or Marvels Midnight Sons due to the 'Game-play' mechanics, regardless of how 'perfectly' used they are, then I'm not going to play a 'sequel' to an IP I've never played (BG3) or have any interest in.
I can't stand Fighting games either so Street Fighter would never get a vote from me. In fact, I'd rather give Redfall a vote than SF6, BG3 etc because despite its 'issues' at launch, it still appeals to me MORE as a 'game', its setting, its general game-play loop, its combat etc.
Availability may impact the results a bit too - the fact that Starfield 'could' be played for free to Game Pass Subscribers may help 'reach' more people to pull in more votes, but games like HiFi Rush, Forza Motorsport, Lies of P, Atomic Heart and even games like Star Wars and Dead Space have been on Game Pass via EA Access and didn't get the 'votes' that Starfield did. Hifi Rush was Critically acclaimed and considered the Highlight of the Dev Direct show in January yet still didn't get the 'votes'.
All you can say is that Starfield had the 'most' votes - in other words, it appeared in many more peoples 'top 5' than any other game by quite some margin and based on Avg Score too, it was rated above 3rd place by most too - not necessarily their 'best' game, but 'decent' enough to consider in their 'top 3' with some others no doubt deciding it was 4th/5th.
I know that if BG3 had released at the SAME time as on Playstation/PC and into Game Pass too, I wouldn't have played it because it does NOT appeal. I've never played a BG game so wouldn't jump in at the 3rd and cannot stand TBC so that's an instant turn off for ME. Therefore it would never get a Vote from 'me' so 'mass' appeal and easy access may well help more in these type of systems.
If you want to think of it another way, Game Pass not only helps gamers 'try' games, the reach also helps them gain popularity and enjoyed by 'more' people who perhaps can now 'vote' for Starfield having played it than BG3 for example with its expensive barrier to entry and with Saving issues perhaps putting people off from buying
Console war fanboyism at its finest.
Starfield didn’t deserve the win by any metric. Outside of people married to a brand it’s considered well below average and boring, if not outright trash.
COD MW3 is #23 out of 25.
Best selling video game of 2023 - COD MW3. Lol.
I knew starfield would win sorry to all the haters 7/10 wins haha
Damn, I must be a trash gamer. I absolutely loved Starfield, and thoroughly enjoyed all 200 hours I've put into it. I haven't liked a BGS game since Oblivion, either.
Oh well, I'm off to punch more alien creatures in the face to level up my martial arts skills. Great article by the way
@Aeula

Starfield is not trash by an metric. Not everyone's cup of coffee for sure, but trash? Nah...
If anything, comments like yours prove that fanboys do try their absolute best to hate on Starfield at/with every opportunity😅....no doubt driven by its association with MS/Xbox.
@Sol4ris I’d hate on it if it wasn’t. I grew up with Bethesda’s games and Starfield is a betrayal of everything that made them good. If TES VI turns it around then I’ll sing it’s praises but Bethesda themselves have said they ignore criticism. I don’t give a rats ass who it’s associated with so long as modding isn’t hamstrung.
