We have, once again, reached the tail end of another year, folks. Where did all that time go?
Yes, it's the conclusion of another busy twelve months in the wonderful world of video gaming. There's been highs and lows (no Starfield, but we got Pentiment!), there's been joys and sorrows (Redfall still isn't here but Immortality was better than we could have ever imagined!) but in the end, even with the ongoing ripple effects of the pandemic continuing to affect the industry, 2022 has still managed to treat us to plenty of great games.
As usual, and as is PX-mas tradition at this point, a few weeks ago we asked you lovely lot to go ahead and vote for your favourite titles of 2022 in order for us to put together Pure Xbox's Game of the Year 2022 list.
We've now calculated and combined all of those votes using a top secret and very complicated system of levers and pulleys which reside within the manky bowels of Pure Xbox HQ, to come up with the definitive top ten, as voted by you, which you can now survey below.
So, are you ready to find out which title you've crowned as your Game of the Year for 2022? Go ahead and fix yourself a glass of something suitably festive, grab a comfortable chair, and let's jump in!
10. Grounded (Xbox One)
Rocking into our list in the #10 spot, Obsidian's Grounded feels like it's been on Xbox Game Pass for absolutely ages now, but it only actually recently came out of early access into full release and, well, it's an absolute cracker.
Grounded has got a brilliant premise - especially if you're a fan of those old Honey, I Shrunk The Kids movies, but there was so much that could have gone wrong here, it's such a tricky proposition to get right. However, Obsidian has swerved any potential pitfalls and managed to serve up a fantastically addictive survival game, a truly unique experience that wows in terms of both its evolving layers of narrative and gameplay mechanics, and graphics that nail the sense of scale that's required to make running around a back garden in miniature form feel like a colossal adventure.
9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (Xbox Series X|S)
At #9, it's those mean, green, pizza-loving machines.
Tribute Games nailed it with this incredible homage to the glory days of Turtles arcade action, a game that feels instantly familiar to fans of the glory days, whilst also doing enough to modernise, refresh and reinvigorate the core gameplay components for a more modern audience. As we said in our glowing review back in June;
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is a lovingly crafted and supremely entertaining return to the glory days of early 1990s Turtles action. With a look and feel that painstakingly recreates classics such as Turtles in Time, whilst adding in a ton more detail, refining combat and giving you six player online/local co-op to boot, this is a fantastic slice of arcade beat 'em up nostalgia that old hands, diehard fans and newcomers alike can enjoy in equal measure. It is, in short, one shell of a good time."
8. Persona 5 Royal (Xbox Series X|S)
Our #8 spot goes to one of the all-time greats. Persona 5 Royal needs no introduction at this stage of course, and it's really just been amazing to get this slick next-gen version of the game on Xbox Game Pass so we can jump into our adventures with the Phantom Thieves all over again.
If you've played it before, even though it's an absolutely huge and time-consuming game, it's incredibly tempting to restart the whole thing over, and if you've yet to experience what Joker and the gang have to offer, well, you're in for the treat of a lifetime. As we said in our review;
"One of the best games of the last generation of consoles, and in with a very strong shout as the greatest JRPG of all time, Persona 5 Royal makes for a fantastic new addition to Xbox Game Pass. Atlus has gone to town on reworking and revamping its 2016 classic in this Royal upgrade and it pays off here with the ultimate version of a true all-timer. This next-gen version runs at a velvety smooth 4K/60FPS too, making for a truly unmissable experience that we highly recommend you dive right into. Games don't get much better than this."
7. Vampire Survivors (Xbox One)
In at #7, and it's an indie game that could quite rightly have cleaned up with Game of the Year awards all over the shop this year, it's totally taken the world by storm.
Booting into Vampire Survivors for the first time, we have to say, we were a little bit like "Really? This is it? This is what everyone's been going on about?" And then we played it for a few minutes, and then those minutes turned into hours, then to days and weeks...presidents came and went, empires crumbled to dust, new galaxies formed then faded and all th...you get the idea, this game is more addictive than crack. Whatever crack is. As Liam put it in his review;
"Vampire Survivors might not seem like all that much to get excited about at a glance, but what it does, it does incredibly well, making it an absolute must-play game, especially for fans of similar titles. It’s ideal for short and longer sessions, is incredibly accessible with simple controls, and there’s plenty of depth once you get familar with each character - with skill combos and weapon evolution that allows you to enhance your character's power in all sorts of exciting ways. Vampire Survivors just might be the indie game of the year and is easily one of the best games you can play on Xbox and Game Pass in 2022 and beyond."
6. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Xbox Series X|S)
We reach #6 in our countdown and it's flipping LEGO and flipping Star Wars. Surely we've had enough of this caper by now? How many of these games do you people need, for crying out lo...oh, wait, no hang on this is actually kind of brilliant.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga brings the entire Star Wars series together, all of it, even the one with Jar Jar, reworking material that TT Games has visited in the past with a modern sheen, revised controls and much more satisfying combat and exploration aspects. If you're a fan of this stuff at all, there's countless hours of fun to be had here, tons of clever references and surprise cameos and jokes and all that good stuff. As we said in our review;
"It always felt like LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga would struggle to live up to its lofty promise of delivering essentially the most expansive Star Wars game to date, but the team at TT Games really have done an amazing job on it. We've still got a few nitpicks, and we also wish it included online co-op support, but there's no denying that it's a stunningly beautiful and brilliantly ambitious take on the world of Star Wars complete with endlessly enjoyable gameplay and enough side-content to keep you busy for many, many hours to come. We've been waiting so long for this game to arrive, and we're pleased to report the Force is definitely strong with this one."

A Plague Tale is my number 1, but Elden Ring is is just as fantastic! It’s a shame Chained Echoes isn’t on here, but it’s understandable. I’m happy to see High on Life on here, though. Overall, I think it has been a fantastic year for Xbox thanks to Game Pass and the excellent additions they’ve added over the year.
@Kaloudz I'm the same as you with Elden ring, usually at souls games I absolutely suck and don't get past the 1st/2nd boss lol but with Elden Ring I'm level 81 and going to the second part of caelid, and it's thanks to those summoning totems before bosses and dungeons. This is the "easy" mode I've been begging for in souls games and because of that it's in my top 3 games of the year.
@Kaloudz sure is, went for a mage class and currently trying to find the best magic set to make me OP, but exploring every nook and cranny is quite fun, also I think the ashes summons have really helped especially mimic tear. Hopefully going forward from software keep the online and open world design.
Also find this interavtive map helpful to make sure I don't miss anything.

@UltimateOtaku91
> exploring every nook and granny is quite fun
That’s quite the typo!
@Kaloudz I have never played any of them but they say that Elden Ring is the most accessible so I might get it next year.
@ParsnipHero oh wow 😂😂, I swear I don't a have a granny fetish.
Nice list, my GOTY is a very close call. I've got 300 hours played in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous which may be the greatest CRPG ever made imo. But in the other corner, Elden Ring is Elden Ring. After that is a skyscraper sized dropoff, those 2 stood apart in 2022 for me on Xbox.
Elden Ring absolutely deserves the GotY nods it’s getting. Great to see it again!
The rest of the list is a little iffy to me though. Persona 5 is wonderful, but have we really reached a point in gaming consciousness where re-releasing a game to a new format constitutes the game of the year list treatment? It’s nicer to celebrate new titles that deserve the exposure. Just my two cents. I’m sure a lot of people are groaning seeing High on Life on here too.
@Kaloudz I believe they nerfed it but not by much, its still quite powerful.
Elden ring isn't just game of the year, it's the best game in years! Well deserved. Not going to lie, surprised none of tunic, immortality or pentiment make the list. All amazing day one indies and if folks haven't tried them, they are well worth checking out.
This list is a complete joke. How did Shredders Revenge place lower then Lego Starwars, and Especially Modern Warfare II?
Lego Star Wars is a complete mess. It doesn't play like the the older Lego games all co-op is a not very two player friendly.
And Moder Warfare II don't get me started on that cluster *****. It's not even a CoD game anymore. Unable to move around the map, dead silence not a perk, camping spots to encourage camping. This is not CoD.
Really disappointed by your list here I think someone was drinking too much egg nog there.
@Tasuki As mentioned in the article, we didn't pick any of these games ourselves - we asked for the votes last week:
https://www.purexbox.com/features/poll-what-is-your-xbox-game-of-the-year-for-2022
Immortality, tunic and pentiment should be on the list.
For me it was deathloop. It starts slow but once you get the hang of it’s a masterpiece imo
Pfft, typical weak list I would expect from some user polling popularity contents.
High on life for me, what a game
Disappointed there's no Callisto Protocol here, that was only behind Elden Ring for me this year. And who on earth is voting for COD as game of the year?! Did not expect that to feature in the top 10.
@Amigator 100%. I’ll never understand how High on Life charts half way up this list but Tunic, Pentiment and Immortality don’t even get a look in. Not finished than all yet but they are 3 fantastic games.
Glad to see Elden Ring on top. That was my favorite. I need to play plague tale requiem.
I respect From Software for what it does but the studio's games never click with me so I didn't play Elden Ring. Considering all the accolades the game has received I do think it's important for me to mention that before I list my top 5...
1. TMNT Shredder's Revenge
2. Sonic Frontiers
3. The King of Fighters XV
4. Gotham Knights
5. A Plague Tale: Requiem
Sonic was the surprise of the year for me. I was hoping it'd be good but didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It's a very flawed game but there were some cyberspace levels that were great, maybe among the best in the series, and the open world was fun to play around in. Lays good groundwork for the future.
@BBB that’s fair, they are niche games. Tunic less so as it’s a cute colourful Zelda like but crossed with Dark Souls ideas, which probably makes it less approachable, but it’s one of the most clever games I’ve ever played. Genius game design. (No spoilers)
High on life, even if you take the polarising humour and incessant chattering out, it’s just a very average shooter at its core. Yes it has some redeeming qualities - a bright fun bubblegum world and fresh feeling, edgy dialogue - but the gunplay is mid at very best.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe only Elden Ring and CoD were not on Gamepass of the top 10 games. It was a poor year for first party, but gamepass was pretty brilliant in all honesty.
Elden Ring was my Goty, what a brilliant game
Merry Christmas everyone!
My top five games of 2022:
5 - Evil West
4 - Gotham Knights
3 - Digimon Survive
2 - As Dusk Falls
1 - A Plague Tale: Requiem
I'm so looking forward to 2023.
@Kaloudz mimic tear with the aggro talisman for the Win. Just hopped in to help a buddy with the fire giant after stepping away for 5 months. And they've really buffed and nerfed so much it was a massacre for us haha. Still a lot of fun
@Kaloudz haha yeah I had to uninstall it otherwise I wouldn't have played other games. It's really easy to jump back in, although I did start to panic-switch between my bow, sword and consumables while under the fire giants feet only to suffer a massive fire explosion moments later! But yeah, couple of lives in and you'll be swinging around your weapons again like a champ. It feels like it loads faster & teleporting across the map just takes a few seconds. Can't wait for DLC!
How Cyberpunk 2077 didn't even make the list is beyond me. It's laughable that a CoD game made it on the list over that, and obviously other games as well.
COD, High on Life and Vampire Survivors i agree 100%
I can't believe how perfect a game Vampire Survivors is for us older gamers. Highly addictive and great satisfaction.
I had A Plague Tale to win. How funny this game didn't get no awards this year. Understand its not God of War or Elden Ring but its kinda crazy if you think about it. Regardless shoutout to Elden Ring
no pentiment? no tunic!?
