Well, well, well. If it isn't the end of another tortuous year on the hellish space prison that is planet Earth. 2023 has been a real one alright, simultaneously jam-packed full of some of the best games we've ever clapped eyes on, whilst the industry itself faced widespread job losses and closures that were, for the most part, due to good old-fashioned greed. Goodwill to all men and that.
On a more positive note, well, games. Lots and lots of beautiful games. There's been plenty of chatter over the past few months as to whether or not 2023 has been the GOAT as far as quality is concerned and, honestly, besides perhaps 1998, it's very hard to argue otherwise. It's been a nonstop onslaught that kicked off with January's sublime Hi-Fi RUSH and kept on keeping on through the likes of Resident Evil 4 Remake, Diablo 4, Starfield, Alan Wake 2 and Baldur's Gate 3.
We've had so many great exclusive and multiplatform AAA titles this year and, as per usual, a torrent of incredible indies to keep us glued to our screens at every opportunity with Sea of Stars, Cocoon, Jusant, Chants Of Sennaar, DREDGE and much more providing enough variety to keep us all well and truly entertained.
Of course, in keeping with established tradition round these parts, we recently asked you lovely people to vote for your favourite games of 2023 in order to once again crown Pure Xbox's Game of the Year. These votes have now been fed through a complex system of futuristic machines located in a bunker deep beneath the earth's surface and, with the aid of several of the most talented counters in the country, we've been able to form the following Top Ten list, as voted for by you. Yes that's right, you. There's nobody else to blame here...this is 100% your mess.
So, ready to find out which games made the cut and who exactly has been crowned overall winner? Grab yourself a few festive refreshments, find a chair that doesn't have a sleeping relative in it and let's jump in!
10. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (Xbox Series X|S)
As much as this particular writer struggled on numerous occasions to get fully involved with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order when it released back in 2019, there have been no such problems with its top-notch sequel. No sir, this one's a belter.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sees Respawn more fully realise the original vision they set out in their first SW vehicle, giving us a Cal Kestis who now knows the ropes of being a Jedi and can get busy building upon his powers, giving him a more developed and enjoyable set of skills to deploy against a threat that feels far more epic in scale and scope this time around.
This really does feel like a dream game for wannabe Jedis, with a huge open world full of jaw-dropping locations, tight platforming, clever puzzles, cool as hell enemies, loads of cameos, excellent combat and enough secrets, lore dumps and cheeky little nods to keep the most ardent of Star Wars fans very, very happy indeed. It had its bugs and performance issues at launch, for sure, but this is a game that's been patched and improved since release and now stands as one of the very best adventures you can blast into on consoles, whether you're into space pew-pews or not.

9. Resident Evil 4 Remake (Xbox Series X|S)
We weren't sure they could pull it off if we're being completely honest, but Capcom has been on a hell of a roll recently and Resident Evil 4 Remake confirmed that the studio isn't set on quitting its hot-streak anytime soon.
Remaking what is often regarded as the greatest action game of all time is no easy task and, with Resi fans watching on nervously, Capcom returned to this bonafide classic in order to rebuild from the ground up, resulting in a version of Leon's adventure that can, quite unbelievably, stand shoulder to shoulder with its predecessor. This is Resident Evil 4 modernized, revamped and reworked in spectacular fashion, and all without losing the essence of what made it so special in the first place. As we said in our review back in March;
"You can feel the care and attention to detail in every aspect of how Capcom has handled this remake. Combat has been improved and expanded without destroying the all-important feel of how Leon does battle, iconic boss fights and locations look and feel better than ever and carefully considered additions to areas allow for more exploration between confrontations without ruining the tight and taut flow of the adventure."
8. Diablo IV (Xbox Series X|S)
Diablo IV definitely feels as though it's been overshadowed by other games as this crazy year has drawn on, such is the way of things when the industry just keeps on dropping amazing works of art for us to dive into, but rest assured this is very much Blizzard operating on top form.
While we all wait for the meaty expansions and additions that'll bring us right back into the fold (Vessel of Hatred drops in 2024) what we've got here is a base game that delivers us some of the most fiendishly addictive - and relentlessly bleak - action in the entire series. As we said back in June;
"Diablo 4 is a natural evolution of the series with its new open-world design and gameplay, enhanced social and multiplayer experience, and a live service that promises to keep players returning to the world of Sanctuary for years to come. These strong foundations and scale of the whole experience, combined with the five unique classes and seemingly limitless customisation options for builds, should keep even the most diehard demon slayers busy for a very long time."
7. Forza Motorsport (Xbox Series X|S)
We expected Turn 10 would deliver the goods, and they didn't let us down. Forza Motorsport is a fantastic racer that swaps out the open world action of the Forza Horizon series in favour of closed circuit racing on some of the world's most famous courses.
With jaw-dropping visuals, tight handling and a level of detail and fidelity that's a match for Sony's competitor, it may not have launched with an exhaustive array of play options but this new Motorsport feels like the beginning of something special, as we pointed out in our review;
"Forza Motorsport feels like a game that's set up for the future. The technical underpinnings on show in Turn 10's Xbox Series X|S debut are remarkable, and this sort of solid foundation is always a good start. When Turn 10 gets around to adding more unique career events, tracks and bonus features, this could become one of the very best sim racers ever to grace Xbox. For now, it's a brilliant effort that doesn't quite finish in first place."
6. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (Xbox Series X|S)
Yes. Cyberpunk 2077, the game we rewarded a 5/10 to at release due to...well...let's just say we all know the story by now. It's been a long hard road with this one but, fast-forward almost two years and the hard work and dedication that CDPR has put into righting this particular ship has paid off.
We may not have though it was possible, and it hasn't fully erased each and every one of the bad memories from our minds regarding the inconsistencies and untruths that accompanied the pre-release hype, but credit where it's due, they finally turned it around. With a huge big update full of improvements and fixes dropping alongside Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty itself, we can now say we've been served the experience we wanted from the get-go, it's as simple as that.
Combat has been revitalised through brand new skill trees and perks, entire systems of new cybernetic tricks and abilities have been ushered in to better suit the world and give you more options as to how you approach action. NPCs have been improved, traffic now works like should, cops have been fixed, bugs have been squashed and the whole thing now looks and plays very well indeed, thank you very much.
Throw in a fantastic narrative that feels as though it just gets the overall vibe a whole lot better, a stellar turn from Idris Elba, and a story that flings us between the sort of excellent set-pieces we were crying out for in 2020 and well, this is Cyberpunk 2077 stepping up and becoming the game we always knew it could be. From our review;
"We've had our ups and downs with this one, oh boy it's been a rollercoaster, but entirely reworked skills and perks, refined and refreshed combat, retooled loot and menu systems and a cracking new slice of CDPR narrative magic makes for a game that we're finally able to recommend wholeheartedly. They've only gone and bloody done it."

Merry Xmas everybody.
Very surprised to see Diablo IV make the list.
I guess it only proves that it was not a game for me.
This ranking is interesting because it's what the people we interact with voted for. It also proves that gamers enjoy games regardless of politics controversies and I am happy about it. Besides, it's not like she made Hogwarts Legacy. Fans of the Harry Potter IP and gamers in general should not let a single person ruin what they like or what they grew up with. She's filthy rich already, who cares. Don't follow EG and enjoy games.
EDIT: Just to clarify, I don't agree with her but I just ignore her.
I shouldn't be but I am a bit shocked at the winner. That game is so bad.
I would have put wo long in there somewhere, but a pretty good list. It was a good year for games, let's hope 2024 delivers some awesome games aswell. Merry Christmas everyone
Starfield is an incredible game.
Merry Christmas everyone thanks pure xbox and the team for your dedication this year 👍
@RBRTMNZ and me as well but I prefer an xbox exclusive get this than a multiplatform game but I think hifi rush deserves it or forza starfield is a broken mess
1. Starfield. Really? The game has one the most lazy designed stories and the game is filled with empty planets. It’s an okay game at the most
lol at the top ten.
Forza really?
Highfi so high?
And Starfield one?
Like that’s people just voting off the back of one word. In surprised Redfall isn’t there tbh.
@Dan1283 the best game should get it mate. Not a game just so you can say an exclusive of your fave bit of plastic justifies your purchase.
i put 300 hrs in starfield and i agree, its game of the year. and if im gonna go by the games i played then redfall is number 2. i do plan on playing re 4 but all the rest on the list is naw for me.
I didn’t enjoy Starfield as much as others so I’d personally move that down the list. But otherwise I think this ranking worked out great.
Happy holidays!
Well I’m still playing Starfield and that really counts as something! It is very flawed though, the missions are extremely bland and need some of that Fallout humor.
Merry Christmas to all!
Hogwarts for me. Hi-Fi Rush second.
Haven't finished Persona 5 Tactica yet.
Starfield was my game if the year too. I loved it.
Number one ruins the entire list and pretty much makes it a fanboy ranking, this would be exactly like Spider-man 2 being Push Square's goty. Baldur's Gate 3 is better than those two games in almost every category but is not about that is it 🤷
Yikes... disagree with this ranking strongly. How is Dead Space not even on list? Starfield at #1? Opinions are subjective I suppose.
Merry Christmas everyone, still playing Starfield after 450h, well deserved xbox goty! Can't wait for shattered space.
The games were so good that you could mix them up randomly and not too many complainers with any list…. Except with this one apparently… Starfield was #1 for me but maybe BG3 if it released earlier
Alan Wake 2 was easily my GoTY but enjoyed Starfield and am glad to see it get some love.
@Dan1283 I thought Forza was good thanks to the racing but agree it doesn’t belong in a top 10 list due to the performance issues, bland presentation, and insane car progression system. Hi-Fi Rush on the other hand is an absolute gem and one of the best games of the year.
I think Starfield is the Game that if they were being 'honest', should have expected. Its so typical of Bethesda in every way - apart from the state of the game at launch.
If MS hadn't bought Zenimax, this is the 'game' Bethesda would have made - it probably would have released 11/11/22 with many more bugs, glitches etc that you'd be waiting for them to patch. It would still be the same Engine, Same Character designs, same RPG mechanics, same physics, maybe Combat would be worse and more 'clunky', but its exactly what you'd expect from the SAME Studio that made Fallout 3, 4, 76, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and ESO.
It seems that SOME expected Microsoft to suddenly Change Bethesda, get them to 'evolve' into some mythical Developers. Maybe even Change to a new Game Engine so more 'modern' looking Presentation, somehow transform them from being the 'Bethesda' they always have been into a studio that makes the 'impossible' a reality and significantly raises the bar for the rest to 'try' and catch up to - a generation defining Game...
I haven't played 'every' Bethesda game, and those I have, only a few at 'Launch'. Their 'last' Single-player RPG, Fallout 4, wasn't great at Launch, the Base building is very Clunky and the Combat too isn't great - much more fluid in Starfield. In my opinion, its the 'best' Bethesda game at Launch, but that's not necessarily a high bar to beat.
However, it is a typical Bethesda game (for better or worse) and pretty much what I expected - maybe 'better' than I expected as I expected Combat to be 'Clunky' and 'more' bugs/issues than I encountered.
Not my GotY, but I can say it's pretty much what I expected.
I would give it to BG3 personally, but I am ok with Starfield as the winner. Was it perfect? Absolutely not but it was exactly what I was hoping it would be, a Bethesda game in space and it was a Bethesda game through and through, for better or worse depending on how you feel about Bethesda games. I found myself right at home with it and doing many of the things I only do in Bethesda games. IMO it had the best story to date for a Bethesda game, the best combat of a Bethesda game to date, and it sucked me in like all Bethesda games do. Put over 150 hours into it with only Vampire survivors beating it in regards to amount of time played this year.
Was Starfield for everyone? Clearly not based on the sheer amount of hate the game gets but then again neither is BG3. I guarantee most of the console gamers that pick up BG3 will drop it within 10-20 hours of playing it. Still an absolutely brilliant game, just a game that’s not for everyone. Then again, no game is for everyone.
Starfield has its issues, but it’s still a great game imo and one I plan to play plenty more of in the years to come.
Where’s Lies of P?
@Cakefish
Very good question
@Banjo- People should be allowed to have there own View on things not everyone has to love everyone and agree with how they live it's not natural but that's the world these days until you step outside what is tought acceptable then they are shunned by the world think and feel how you feel just don't stick it down people's throats but happy Christmas anyways rant over
Alan Wake 2 was bad in my opinion, Starfailed was horrible. RE4 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are the two top ones for me.
If the GotY lists are telling us anything this year, it’s what an incredible diversity there were in quality titles and how so many of them impacted people differently. What a year!
My top 3:
Glad to see Hi-Fi RUSH up there, I adored that game.
Happy with Starfield on 1. That game gets ridiculously much criticism. After more than 250 hours I had to force myself to play some other games as well.
That text about Forza Motorsport though… It’s almost like the writer was in a cynical mood. You can’t be serious about some points.
Rating the best games, is way more difficult than movies, TV, toys or most appliances. If you played BG3 and Starfield, deep enough to offer a fair opinion, it leaves little time for everything else. As an Xbox fan site, it's obvious the big first parties are played moreso than leftfield games or Indie games. A lot of games fly under the radar. Starfield isn't a top tier game, it's great and playable though and that's really all that counts.
@somnambulance Spot on, this year was such a Remarkable example of why gaming is so captivating and really only rivaled by books. The depth and breadth of SO many ways to revele in our imagination and live our fantasies has rarely had a better year.
@Tecinthehead in your opinion.
@RBRTMNZ see I disagree. Absolutely hated hi-fi rush, not my kinda game. Loved Starfield and Redfall and BG3 though.
Honestly a bit surprised by this list. Is Starfield really the #1 game in 2023? It’s not a bad game, but in this year of all years surely we can do better.
Gollum was robbed.
Forza Motorsport above Jedi Survivor, Diablo 4 and RE4 Remake? I suppose it’s just opinion based but for me Forza Motorsport was the biggest disappointment of the entire year. Despite it’s moderate Metacritic standing, it still sits at 2.1 stars out of 5 on the Xbox store which is a testament to the disaster that was the progress reset bug.
To this day I have only played it for about 4 hours, and I had about 5 races worth of progress reset in that time. The game isn’t installed anymore after I tried it again 1 month later just to see that the bug was still happening.
I feel like this is an ‘eggshells walked on’ kind of list. But each to their own I suppose.
There's definitely a decent chance they gave it to Starfield because it's a high-profile Xbox exclusive but it really shouldn't matter, this is their list, and they can put even Gollum on top if they want. And honestly the hate Starfield's been getting has gotten to Final Fantasy 13 levels of hyperbolic.
This hilarious!! Starfield??? Higher Baldur’s Gate, Alan Wake, Res Evil 4, Hogwarts?? I put MK1 and Street Fighter 2 higher!! This obvs fanboy article!! 😂😂
@brn70121 This isn’t THEIR list, this is OUR list as voted for by PX readers, that’s what surprised so many I think
That ranking is a utter disgrace for good gamers on xbox world.
Not sure what is the source of that issue, but I do not know that xbox gamers have more taste and critical thinking capability as a human being.
List needs to re-constructed based on the real opinions of real xbox gamers.
Absolute joke Starfield is in this list nevermind no.1
Starfield shouldn't be anywhere near the top of this list or any list you want better games resi 4 remake dead space remake coccon sea of stars hi fi rush forza etc there's an endless list of better games this year than starfield come on its average at best and a broken mess
Starfield? Really?
@jedinite A game does not need to be "my kinda game" for me to understand that it is still high quality and a great game for people who do like that type of game. For example, I have zero interest in Alan Wake 2 because it does not look like my kind game but I can see why it is receiving praise. If you cannot see that Hi-Fi Rush is great it says a lot more about you than it does Hi-Fi Rush.
I loved and hated Starfield at the same time. I cared more about the aesthetic of Starfield more than anything. But the emptiness of the planets killed it for me. There should have been more. Like Fallout 4 you could go into some random vault and there were surprises. Starfield, you go to a random planet and a ship instantly lands near you and they are oblivious to you being there also. There could have been so much more with Starfield and they just didn't do "it"
@Tecinthehead baldurs gate is the most normie game ever made though and it's full of disgusting fetish stuff like licking people's toes and animal/human intercourse.
If someone was to quiz the people playing baldurs gate 3 on games like pillars of eternity, xcom or divinity they'd say "what are they?"
I feel like declaring Starfield as your GOTY is a troll move. Starfield was... fine. It's just so mid though. Some high - highs and a lot of very low - lows. To declare a game like that as your "Game of the Year" feels very, very weird. Odd choice indeed. Was the intent here to create controversy and dive clicks? Carry on, I guess.
Good list, I wouldn't change a thing. Merry Christmas everyone! 🌲
@Dan1283 It would be nice to have an exclusive win it, unfortunately Microsoft did not release a GOTY contender let alone a winner. I loved Hi-Fi Rush but there were a lot of better games this year and while Forza had top notch racing, it performs like crap and felt soulless.
My top five from 1-5:
Alan Wake 2
Baldur’s Gate 3
Final Fantasy XVI
HI-Fi Rush
Hogwarts Legacy
Starfield was my number 1 game and Redfall was my number 2. I enjoyed both a lot. Happy Holidays everyone and have fun playing your favorite games of the year.
@Odium I plan on getting Alan Wake 2 eventually I did enjoy the first one.
@KillerBoy I didn't expect it to get #1 here, however, the complaints about the "empty planets" are a little odd.
We were told the game was "NASA-punk." This isn't Skyrim or Oblivion. It is not Mass Effect — a fantasy game set in space. There are no intelligent humanoid alien races, living or extinct. No civilization means no ruins and no towns.
Did people expect to be walking through the wilderness and finding alien runes and totems? Walking to different towns on foot would be silly. Star Wars and other movies like Rebel Moon are fantasy. Having cottages spotted with advanced technology would be kind of silly.
Could Bethesda add additional towns, POI diversity, and events to planets? Sure. I'm just surprised to hear people complain that barren and/or lifeless planets are barren or lifeless in a game. I doubt the devs will add the entirety of every Fallout map to Earth, but we'll see.
BTW, where's Lies of P on this list?
@theduckofdeath no one asked for a 1000 empty planets, would rather take 10 well crafted planets any day. It seems Bethesda was too lazy or uninspired to make a good game. I got so bored collecting these artefacts, the special abilities are really useless.
Only just started on Starfield and really enjoying it.
Very strong list overall.
@Tacoborn
It was voted for by the readers
@ozkrmz
Oh grow up. People have different opinions to you. That’s how the world works.
@brn70121
It was voted for by the readers.
@somnambulance
Exactly. Just how it should be. The more games people think are worthy of GOTY the better.
I think the only reason that BG3 didn't hit the top spot in this list is because of when it released. It was immediately at a disadvantage because people simply have not had chance to play it. Unfortunately, it won't be considered for next years list due to having released this year, but I think many, many more people would pick as their number one once they have had chance to dive in.
Conversely, an awful lot of people will have played Starfield, and had time to complete it, which is why on an Xbox orientated website I am not surprised to see it be awarded more votes than any other game.
Give it 12 months, and then ask the question; what is the greatest game ever to grace the Xbox platform, and I have little doubt that BG3 would take the top spot hands down. The game is quite simply the best game ever made, and once people have played it, I feel sure that they will agree with that statement...
@electrolite77 Fair enough. I should have paid closer attention.
@Kaloudz I am playing through Sea of Stars right now. What others love about it has not hit me, yet. I plan to complete it before the new year and then I can make a full assessment.
sigh... Starfield at #1.. I know this is an Xbox site folks but really?
@BleedingDreamer I’m blown away by how incredible this game is. I expected to enjoy it but it’s one of the most unique games I’ve ever played.
@RBRTMNZ wait. How come you can decide which games you like but apparently I'm not allowed? I said I prefer AW2 to hi-fi rush and you slate me. Yet you say you prefer Hi-fi rush to AW2 and it's fine.
@jedinite I didn’t say that at all. I specifically described AW2 as praise worthy so I’m really not sure why you think I said you shouldn’t like it. What I actually said is that my lack of interest in AW2 does not make it bad. I did so to try to get you to see what you’re doing in saying that HiFi is bad because it’s not your kid of game.
Looks like I need to try out HiFi Rush. Never went under my radar. Very surprised with the no.1 spot. Thought BG3 would be a shoe-in.
Personally, I found it quite a disappointing year - the two games I had high expectations for, Diablo 4 and Starfield were disappointments. I didn't go beyond finishing the campaign on Diablo 4 as it was getting boring with all the back and forth to towns just to manage inventory. Starfield just didn't resonate with me right from the off - I was expecting something far better than what we got. I know some people love these games, but for me they were disappointing. After I ditched Starfield I played the Halo Infinite campaign and then Multiplayer for the first time and that is the most gaming fun I have had this year.
@Kaloudz I'm just after the haunted mansion and the..."disappointing turn of events."
>Starfield won
Lmao. Awful taste, probably rigged judging by the comment section here.
I’m glad the greater gaming community is turning against that heaping pile of trash.
How is 'Lies of P' not in the top three?
Starfield over Baldur's Gate 3? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love Starfield but Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the best games ever made while Starfield isn't even in the top 3 Bethesda games
Chapeau for Starfield, well deserved. Was also my GOTY. TPAG&TPRPGs are the only type of games that i enjoy greatly. I could never get into crappy/infant style games like BG3/Diablo.
This is in many ways just a list of games a lot of people played, read games on GamePass, and maybe not indicative of the quality of the games thenselves. Like having Starfield at the top is the perfect example of this, its a good game but is it the best game released in 2023? Nah
Great list!
I think Alan Wake 2 is #1 for me. Starfield would be 2. Diablo would be 3. Can't wait to see what 2024 has in store.
@KillerBoy Developers make a game and release it. We buy it or we don't. None of us commissioned Starfield.
Bethesda had a plan for Starfield and fulfilled it. Some stuff obviously was cut due to TTI, budget, complexity. Some may return in updates.
I don't know why you think the devs wouldn't make 10 "empty" planets and call it a day in your scenario. That would certainly make their lives easier. They never intended to make unique Oblivion-like planets. That would be a full game map for each of your 10 planets within Starfield.
While I get not liking Starfield being GOTY; saying it's rigged is dumb AF.
1. The list is based on our votes.
2. The idiots claiming the "wider gaming community" is turning against this game aren't paying attention. It's on the platinum tier of best selling and most played games on steam for all of 2023.
3. That means despite launching in September (far later than most games on the list) it sold and continues to sell very well. Was played and continues to be played a lot.
4. So despite all the criticism constantly being fired at Starfield, people keep buying and playing it.
I'm not saying the game is great, IMO it is not. But the idea that it's ranking on this list is rigged, when it clearly has been selling and being played a ton, is ludicrous.
@theduckofdeath companies make games based on what gamers want, not what they want. So your point don’t make sense.
@RBRTMNZ again I reiterate. I did NOT say Hi-Fi rush was bad at all.
' ...see I disagree. Absolutely hated hi-fi rush, not my kinda game.'
That's what I actually said. Which is the same as you saying I didn't like AW2, not my kinda game. At no point did I say Hi-Fi rush was bad.
@jedinite Fine you didn’t literally say it’s bad but you essentially said it’s not good. You disagreed that it is one of the best games of the year and the reason you gave is that it is not your kind of game. I on the other hand think AW2 is one of the best games of the year even though it is not my kind of game.
There is a huge difference in our stances. I don’t think that my personal preferences disqualify a game from any top 10 lists besides my own and despite your reading comprehension might have you believe I never said anything remotely close to that about AW2. I said it deserves the praise it is receiving.
@Kaloudz I like it, it just seems some people really, really like it. That's why I was curious. I'm making steady progress, though Tuesday I go back to work.
At the moment, my group has been sent to Torment Peak.
@RBRTMNZ again. Please read my OG post. At no point did I say Hi-Fi rush was bad. It is a great game ... but NOT MY KINDA GAME!. Exactly what you said about AW2. Now run along child I can explain no more.
