It's that time of year again! As usual, Game of the Year roundups are flying in thick and fast across the web, and now it's our turn at Pure Xbox to count down our picks for the top ten Xbox Games of the Year in 2020.
A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to vote on your favourite Xbox titles of the past twelve months, and we've combined those votes with our own staff picks to make up our top ten and crown a number one!
Keep in mind that we're not including older games that have been upgraded from Xbox One to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S (such as Forza Horizon 4 and Gears 5), so the following list is made up purely of brand-new releases.
Without further ado, here is the official Pure Xbox Game of the Year roundup for 2020!
10. Tetris Effect: Connected (Xbox Series X|S)
It's quite an achievement when a Tetris game can still crack an Xbox Game of the Year roundup in 2020! Tetris Effect: Connected deserves all the plaudits though, releasing as an Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launch title this past November with Xbox Game Pass, and quickly establishing itself as one of the highlights of the bunch.
Built on top of the original Tetris Effect that launched for PlayStation 4 back in 2018, Tetris Effect: Connected adds all-new co-op and competitive online and local multiplayer modes, making this one a blast to play either by yourself or with friends. If you haven't tried it out with Game Pass yet, you owe it to yourself to do so.
9. Gears Tactics (Xbox Series X|S)
The Gears of War spinoff Gears Tactics first released for Windows 10 as part of Xbox Game Pass for PC back in April, before eventually landing on console this past November. And while adapting the franchise to a new format was always going to be a challenge, Splash Damage and The Coalition did an excellent job with this one.
In our review of the PC version, we praised Gears Tactics as a "supremely confident, highly polished effort", and we were similarly impressed with the Xbox Series X version when it launched later in the year. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoke numerous times about how much he enjoys Gears Tactics, and definitely concur.
8. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 (Xbox One)
It's still hard to believe that after years of disappointment with the Tony Hawk's franchise, from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, Activision finally delivered a remaster that brought the series back to its best in 2020, recreating the two original PlayStation 1 classics from the turn of the millennium.
At the time, we called it "a very faithful remake of the original two classics", "recapturing the magic of Pro Skater's early days while also modernising them for the current generation", and while we had a few gripes at launch, plenty of those have now been addressed and fixed in subsequent patches, making this a truly great Tony Hawk game.
7. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Xbox One)
The arrival of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition on Xbox was actually announced during the pre-show of the Xbox Games Showcase back in July, but it's fair to say it ended up being one of the highlights of the day, especially when it was revealed it was coming to Xbox Game Pass as well.
Flash forward to December, and the game is now finally available for Xbox consoles on XGP, and it's everything we'd hoped for, delivering an epic, lengthy adventure complete with new features such as the ability to play in 2D, new side stories for companions, mounts to ride, and various quality of life improvements.
6. Cyberpunk 2077 (Xbox One)
It's been a turbulent year for Cyberpunk 2077 to say the least, and the game has suffered a largely poor reception for last-gen consoles so far, but nevertheless the Pure Xbox community has voted it one of the best Xbox games of 2020, seeing past the many performance issues and bugs at launch.
Despite its issues, it's clear to see the potential in CD Projekt Red's long-awaited RPG, such as its strong narrative, brilliantly written characters, some excellent side missions, fun combat and an astonishing setting, and with a few major patches and a next-gen upgrade, it'll likely be a major highlight of 2021.

Microsoft SERIOUSLY needs to buy Moon Studios.
Haven't played a ton of Xbox games this year, but of the ones I did I'd put Streets of Rage 4 at the top. Despite the 26-year wait it delivered exactly what I wanted.
Streets of Rage 4 is the best game I've played on Xbox this year and is quite possibly the best beat em up I've played. I really enjoyed Resident Evil 3 as well but for whatever reason Doom Eternal never clicked like the 2016 game and I've yet to play Ori, I can't say I was that impressed with Valhalla either.
I did play Tetris Effect on PS4 and its superb and would highly recommend it and I'm quite enjoying Cyberpunk
Cyberpunk is on par with Gears 5 DLC Hivebursters for me as Game of the Year.
3 cheers for Yakuza LoD
Most fun I've had with a JRPG since the Shadow Hearts series
Great picks guys! Can't wait to finish Cyberpunk 2077 to dive into Dragon Quest and the 50-odd games I have marked to play later on Game Pass I have to say I'm surprised with Yakuza: Like a Dragon so high on the list. Yakuza games are still rather niche and had it not been a launch title I think it would have gone unnoticed.
Streets of Rage 4 was 11th, FYI. Within a whisker of making the top ten!
@XBontendo Big ups for mentioning the Shadow Hearts series. Wish we had a remaster of them. It might even entice me to stomach the 3rd game following the 2 prior amazing games.
@FraserG
I would swich out Dragon Quest XI S for Streets Of Rage 4 since technicaly it aint a new game its a port of a switch game
Top three are about right with me.
But just in the wrong order for me.
Three great games though.
Superb. Came in hoping for Ori to win, and very glad it did. Not just my Xbox game of the year but my overall game of the year. An absolutely fantastic game!
Cyberpunk 2077 is GOTY for me.
One of the best games of all time.
Best game for me is THPS 1+2. Personally Cyberpunk 2077 shouldn’t have made the list based on its awful release, yeah I know most of the bugs are probably fixed but I’m sure a lot of games that came out this year deserves to take its place just for being playable on release, Streets of Rage, Mafia Definitive Edition, Resident Evil 3, Little Hope and Crash Bandicoot 4 to name a few
Great picks, I'm happy with this list! Except cyberpunk. I don't care if it's goty material... It's goty 2021 if it is.
@Menchi the 3rd one really grew on me after the halfway point. It takes far too long to really get going, but in the end I remember it fondly
Wow kinda surprised Streets of Rage 4 didn't make the list.
Yakuza for me. The game is amazing and it’s transition to RPG is impressive. It’s seriously underrated imo.
Can’t argue with the majority choosing Ori though, great game, although I will say I actually preferred the first.
As a Resident Evil fan, I'd like to see Resident Evil 3 included even though I know it's not the best. The best still is Resident Evil (2002) LOL but that game is one of the best games ever made anyway.
Can't argue with #1.
Although I would have taken out Flight Sim, as I know it's Xbox brand, but not on console atm, and replaced it with Wasteland 3.
My picks are
the Four Kings Casino and slots
Shotgun Farmers
Namco Museum Classics Vol 1 & 2
Monster Blast
The Falconeer
Hotshot Racing
DLC the game
Forza 7
@Gaming365247 True, but I still think it deserves to be up there, if only to celebrate the fact that Microsoft managed to get it on Game Pass on day 1.
Personally, I would have put Streets of Rage 4 on there instead of Cyberpunk. The game will be great in time, but I would consider it an Incomplete for it's review/the year. It seems like it runs the best out of any console on the Series X, but still, it's not finished. Oh well in the end though. We all know Streets of Rage 4 was one of the best of the year for Xbox.
DOOM Eternal for me. From that list I am also enjoying Valhalla a lot and was enjoying Cyberpunk. However, I did decide to ask for Reimbursement for Cyberpunk and wait until the Series X patch is ready. It is a great game, so would rather play it the way it is meant to be played in a Next Gen System.
What an awesome list! It's really cool to see Yakuza: LaD on the top four. I still haven't played either of the Ori games so I guess I'll add them to th backlog hehe.
@armondo36 I love the fact that some studios want to, and are able to, remain proudly independent.
Independent with second party funding seems to do them just fine, I hope this remains and they DON’T sell out
Ori a deserved winner.
@Bloodborne75 I haven’t paid super close attention to Cyberpunk (oddly enough) but I of course have heard the craziness about the launch. Did you not have any issues?
@xMightyMatt14x I had 1 major issue a total shutdown of my console (pre- hotfix 1.0.4) other than that, once patched, just about 7 very minor issues like some freezing while driving for about 10 seconds, yet after the 1.0.5 patch I turned on all the graphic settings (lens flair, chromatic aberration, film grain, and blur motion) and never suffered a problem save for maybe a soft reset once or twice. Since patch 1.0.6, all has been well The game looks and plays excellent and is one of my favorite games of all time!!
I am playing on the Limited Gears 5 Xbox One X. I cannot recommend this most excellent game enough. I'm sitting at about 73 hours in and am to looking to do everything in game before finishing it. CP2077 is a game I'll be playing always.
I also bought it for my best friend on PS4 (he has a Star Wars Battlefront issue console) and while it would look better on my PS4 Pro, it still looks and runs amazing on his console he got in 2015. Become a Cyberpunk and NEVER look back, my friend!! Game on
@CRANIAL lmao wow, that's... certainly a list of video games
I would of enjoyed 'AC: Valhalla' if it wasnt for the constant server errors and save game corruptions. 'Immortals: Fenyx Rising' gave the same issue. Refunded 'Fenyx Rising' but not yet for AC. Can't ring Xbox support.. no ones there and no online chat either. Wtf?
@gollumb82 you obviously having played it then, Like a dragon is by far better then any otherr installment i have played and is My game of the Year and ill be honest while i enjoyed the others this one was great.
@Blessed_Koz
I haven't played it yet. I'll wait till it hits Game Pass, but even then it'll be way down the list of my to-play list. Unless I love Dragon Quest 11 so much I'll be after another Japanese rpg
Nice list, Ori at #1 is a no brainer.. Can't believe it got snubbed for a nomination for game of the year..
Ori gave me not only some of my best gaming moments of the year, but of all time. Everything looks, sounds and plays so beautifully that it oozes love
Now I'm playing Dragon Quest XI and I can say I'm totally immersed into it. I'm not playing anything else (yeah, I'm the kind of person who plays several games at the same time). The characters are great, story is really good, great soundtrack and if you wanna take a shot, choose the Japanese voices because the acting is superb!
I love Falconeer, but must admit I am so sucked into AC Valhalla I will be getting the Season Pass later and haven't picked up Falconeer in quite awhile.
