Remember when Off The Grid was all the rage back in early October? Well, it's quietened off a little bit since then, but progress is very much ongoing on the title, and it's even just been released on Xbox Series S for the first time.

Originally, Off The Grid had a strange rollout where you had to access it via the Xbox Insider program and only on Xbox Series X, but now that's changed. As of a few days ago, it's officially entered "Game Preview" form on the Xbox Store, and you simply need to search for it (or use the Xbox website link below) and hit the "Get: Free" button.

For those who didn't catch it the first time around, Off The Grid is a very ambitious free-to-play "Extraction Royale" that mixes PvP and PvE elements, envisioned by the director of District 9 and Gran Turismo (Neill Blomkamp). It's come under fire a little bit for its inclusion of NFT elements, although these are described by the developer as entirely optional.

Anyway, it's worth a try for free at least? This new update also introduces crossplay between Xbox and PS5 players, along with a bunch of other improvements as we've detailed below. Keep in mind that if you previously accessed Off The Grid via the Xbox Insider Hub, you'll need to download the new version in order to play it again.

Beyond the Series S and crossplay mentions, here are the rest of the patch notes:

  • Resolved a bug where the voice chat widget remained visible if a player muted a teammate while they were speaking.
