Update: It's also now being reported that Sea Of Thieves could be in line for a PlayStation / Switch version:
Original story: The same source who suggested Xbox was actively working on a new Banjo-Kazooie game recently is now claiming Microsoft will bring a first-party exclusive to a "competitor system" in 2024.
This information comes from the host of the Nate the Hate Podcast. He says this game will be arriving at some point during the calendar year, and should be met with plenty of excitement as it is a title that was in the "game of the year conversation" during the year of its release.
He further mentions how it was "met with high acclaim" and was also well-received by fans.
Here's the part of what he had to say:
"In the calendar year of 2024, Microsoft will bring one of their more acclaimed first-party releases to a competitor system."
Since these comments, several suggestions online have referenced the possibility of it being the rhythm-action game, Hi-Fi RUSH. One particular ResetEra user, known for some Xbox-related leaks in the past, seems to agree the title could potentially be from Tango Gameworks.
Of course, nothing has been officially mentioned about releasing this Xbox exclusive on other platforms, so we'll just have to wait and see.
How would you feel about Microsoft releasing one of its major first-party exclusives on a "competitor platform"? Tell us in the comments.

i think its sad to see this. its just my opinion.
@countmeout this may be just some leftover business from their purchases. As an example CoD.
Why not?
It’s a relatively small title, it’s not one that someone is going to go and buy a console over it (no matter how good it is).
Business is business, if it can make MS and Sony/Nintendo/Netflix or whoever money, you can guarantee they will work something out.
If it’s Hi-Fi Rush then:
Short term benefits: increased sales revenue.
Long term benefits: hopefully this leads to a sequel!
But also it would be one of the important games in Xbox’s exclusive library they are trying to build. Interested to see what people here think about it. I get that sales are maybe not mindblowing for Hi-Fi Rush; but I think that should be the hit Xbox takes as it builds up to its consoles being “unmissable”.
I also think when you look back on consoles in the future; you think about their exclusives (for the most part). So Xbox should be trying to leave their mark with the Series X|S library.
I’m torn on it. Just depends on the situation. If it means getting a sequel where we wouldn’t have otherwise then sure!
@abe_hikura if it is then fine but otherwise nintendo or sony will never give us something so why would we should, right?
Cynical me says this was probably developed already so might as well sell as money is money.
Philanthropic me says share with the world - exclusively is bad.
Pentiment would sure work on a Nintendo switch and was in goty conversations the year it released, right?
It makes sense it's Hi-fi Rush, since it's the only game Xbox put out last year that's worth buying, but even then I'd have to wait for a sale since there's no physical edition.
It would be funny though if switch got a physical edition and Xbox didn't.
When HiFi Rush dropped my first thought was it would be a perfect fit for the Switch.
MS doing this probably isn't a good idea for them to sell consoles. Not that some of their games wouldn't sell well on other devices, it's just I'm not sure why they would do that.
Then again, as I always say, they ARE a software company first...
Plus, let's not kid ourselves. Halo, Gears and Forza aren't going anywhere and those are their main IP.
Not the first time they have put one of their games on a competitors platform, won't be the last either.
Who cares its not like its gonna affect xbox console sales is it ,whatever it is ,its not like its gonna be a spiderman or Mario ,microsoft don't have a console seller yet ,that's gonna be elder scrolls.
Something for Switch is my guess. Hi Fi would work.
Many are thinking it’s Hi Fi Rush, but I heard it was either Microsoft Flight Simulator or Sea of Thieves. Either way it’s all a rumor till it gets announced.
One thing I constantly hear Microsoft get criticised for is the lack of first party exclusives, so releasing what is considered a 'GOTY' contender on another format seems a little backwards to me. Sure, from a sales perspective, I'm sure it makes sense, but when you're supposed to be trying to prove doubters wrong and increase your portfolio of exclusives, maybe not so much. Just my personal take on it. Of course, its a rumour. Until Microsoft or any other party announce anything, I'll take it with a pinch of salt.

I don't think it's as simple as that. Ideally, all games would be available on all platforms, especially Nintendo's games that run at 25fps 720p on Switch. I have a Switch and I have to deal with that unless I go the piracy route. However, since that's not the case and considering that Xbox and Game Pass need some good exclusives to keep their gaming division healthy and competitive and ultimately benefit the customers that are invested in it, this wouldn't make as much sense as it would do in the other scenario, that is ideal but not real.
If something gets released on PlayStation that is an Xbox exclusive, then I think this is the start of more to come. Perhaps Microsoft is testing the water for potential to pave the way as more of a 3rd party developer in the future.
I’m cool with this regardless of what game it turns out to be, my one and only complaint if it’s Hi-Fi Rush is this is the first time I’ve felt Xbox has had a good character/ set of characters they could actually use as a mascot in a long time with Chai and 808.
Taken on its own, @PsBoxSwitchOwner, I agree Hi-Fi Rush is not a system seller, and so the view could be taken that no harm no foul. However, what the Xbox needs is game after game that attract people to their ecosystem, so allowing an acclaimed game, no matter how small, to go to their biggest competitor's system, lessens the need to buy into Xbox. So yes, taken on its own, it seems no problem, but it would also be one less reason to own an Xbox too, which is a problem.
Games of this nature going over to the Switch, is not such a big issue though...
I see them being friendly with Nintendo and releasing certain titles there after a time, why not? I guess same would work with PlayStation but the level of little bitchness through the ABK deal just makes me petty I guess
I doubt it's sea of thieves based on the game of the year contender at the time of release rumor. Sea of thieves was hated on release.
That type of game screams multi platform though. Something Sony should probably learn if any of their live service games make it to release.
Pentiment, hi fi rush, forza horizon 5 all make a ton of sense on the switch. Ms flight sim on sony makes sense but then they would probably release ms flight sim 24 there too
@PsBoxSwitchOwner umm no I know people that bought an Xbox for that game. They then returned the system after they were done. Hi-Fi that is.
Or made their potato laptops work for it.
I think if Xbox could guarantee if Xbox stopped making consoles that Sony and Nintendo would put full game pass, not just cloud based but full download. Then Xbox would do it.
The thing is there is no guarantee and both could still say no even though there would no hardware rivalry anymore.
Things will be very interesting moving forward.
I think it’s a chicken and egg situation for Microsoft on what to do moving forward.
Well we have been getting MLB the Show for quite some time now from PS. Not to mention they have made it clear from the beginning that Bethesda exclusivity will be on a case by case basis. And let's not forget ABK will still have multiplatform games as well. So I don't really see the big deal at this point.
Got a sneaky feeling this might be Psychonauts 2 on Switch. It’s already on PlayStation anyway.
But Hi Fi Rush or Pentiment would also make sense. Word of mouth for the games to help build towards a possible sequel and more people aware of stuff they can play on Game Pass.
@CharlieChooChoo
Exactly. They especially don’t care about squealing kids on the Internet getting all upset because some more people might be able to play a game.
@Phantasystar77 for the same reasons people already do, considering every Xbox game is on another platform (PC last I checked).
@Phantasystar77 let's not forget, it's been no secret that Xbox is now primarily about selling it's games and services. They haven't cared about selling consoles in almost a decade. Whether you play an Xbox game on Xbox, PC, Nintendo, PS, a TV , phone or Tablet makes little difference to them. And they haven't been shy about it. So everyone who has been buying an Xbox, has been doing so because they want to. Maybe they just prefer to pay $10 for the Xbox library they get with game pass, instead of the $70 the same game would cost on PS or Nintendo. Who knows.
@Phantasystar77 Xbox has long been about player choice. If that's how you feel, that's what you should do. Whether you play an Xbox game on Xbox or on PS, Xbox gets the money either way. So you and whoever feels the same should go for it.
@Phantasystar77 then don't recommend them if that's how you feel. Again Xbox has made it no secret that they don't care at all about beating PS in a console race. For some reason people keep talking about that, when Xbox says year after year they don't care about it. Their plans have been publicly laid out for years. If you guys are just now getting the message, it's a good time to jump off, because they will keep bringing select titles to PS and Nintendo and a bunch of other subscription services. That's literally their game plan. So long as you are playing their games, they don't care where you play it. You should go for it. No one is trying to defend Xbox because there is nothing to defend. They've said this is their strategy to take over gaming for years. Truth is, they are out of the console race, but their strategy will make them number 1 in gaming, because that's determined by profits, not console sales. They get to have an audience subscribed to their gaming service making 4B a year off that. And also sell their games for $70 on these other platforms. Which they will use to buy more studios and publishers. Wash, rinse, repeat. Their strategy remains effective, no matter where you play their games, you and everyone else will still be paying Xbox.
@Phantasystar77 don't get me wrong, if consoles weren't sold at a loss, or this resulted in Xbox making less revenue, your argument would hold more weight, because that would destroy Xbox and it's ecosystem. But it's ecosystem is literally "play our games and we get paid." If they were letting the games be pirated or played for free, that would kill them. But the facts are, with this strategy, Xbox will be printing money. They'll use some of it to make some more xbox exclusives, some of it to make exclusives multiplat, some of it to buy studios and publishers. And eventually, just like they are already doing, PS will look at how much money Xbox is making and do the same. Literally look at the history. 8 years ago it was "Xbox has no games," because they are on PC. Now PS games are on PC. Everyone said game pass would never be profitable. Now everyone is creating a similar service. So run to PS, just know they'll be doing the same in a few years.
I hope the speculated competitor is Nintendo. Hi-Fi Rush or Pentiment would be a great fit for the Switch. And I still consider Sony’s indefinite exclusivity on
FF7R, Rebirth and to a lesser extent Ff16 as too scummy, for that alone, I hope it will be Nintendo that gets the game(s).😁
Pentiment or Sea Of Thieves on Switch would be sweet.
@Phantasystar77 My knee jerk reaction is about the same as yours. As an Xbox supporter I continue to feel disenchanted by their nice guy strategy. Not at first, but lately, I’m not feeling particularly good about it. Public perception is very important and I don’t think it’s making them look as good as they think it is. I know the money they will make will always speak louder than any online bickering about who’s better, but damn, I hope it works out for them long term, cause I’m not seeing it short term.
The most ridiculous thing that is being repeated ad nauseam everywhere is that Microsoft will stop making hardware because they sell fewer consoles than Sony. Microsoft is a software company but also a hardware company and hardware is part of the big picture: Windows, Office and Xbox. Surface and consoles. Microsoft doesn't need to sell more consoles than Sony. Microsoft won't stop making consoles because they sell fewer units than Sony. Xbox is ahead of Sony in gaming revenue with ABK on board. It's more likely that Sony stops making consoles than Microsoft, because Sony has a big debt and has been depending on being the market leader and those third-party commissions, which is why they focused more on Call of Duty and Xbox exclusion deals with third parties than on their own studios and games. They are even bringing their games to PC and have created a Game Pass without day one games. Now, they are developing online games and the Xbox exclusion deals backfired. Xbox purchased Zenimax and Activision Blizzard King. Only Square Enix is willing to sign Xbox exclusion deals now and that might also change soon. PS has become an early access platform. Sony will have to make money with their own games now and stop relying on scummy deals.
Bring it everywhere if it works well on the hardware. I don’t care about first party exclusives. If there is a home on pc, Nintendo or Sony then bring it there. I get it day one on game pass. They can pay full price.
@OldGamer999 I said that many times. They should pitch that to Sony imo.
@GrumpyDev I’m so glad this comment, the most sensible on this thread has the most likes.
If you read the comments on this site it often paints us Xbox owners as slightly unhinged.
It’s nice to see that it’s a vocal minority with their crazy “us” and “we” comments and the majority seem to lean towards sensible comments like yours
I see it as a good thing if xbox went multiplatform, coz I wouldn't recommend buying an xbox after my experience with the series x.
The worst thing about it all for us gamers is the uncertainty moving forward.
Do you invest in the Xbox hardware and eco system or Sonys. Both have good and bad points.
If tomorrow both companies and probably more Microsoft just game out and said right.
We are staying in the hardware business for next generation and Xbox will keep exclusivity of games or we are not making hardware after this generation and will be selling our games on all other platforms.
Then at least we would know moving forward.
I know we could have this debate with every new generation, but this generation going into the next seems the most uncertain ever.
Additionally this generation three years in has been the worst ever in both camps.
We could have stuck solid state drives in a Xbox one x and ps4 pro and we wouldn’t have noticed much difference. The worst generation transfer ever in my history of gaming and I’ve been there from the very beginning.
The vague "During its year of release" makes me want to go FAR back: Ryse: Son of Rome.
It's the future. Minecraft hitting 300 million sales has opened many eyes. Even Sony is looking to add some of there titles on PC day & date 👍. So with rising costs continuing it will be it's only a matter of time before Sony follows Microsofts lead. Probably not this gen though but maybe next.
@Phantasystar77 I know consoles are sold at a loss. That's why I said if they weren't, the argument against making some games multiplatform would make more sense. The fact is, even with a 30% cut, a game being sold across multiple platforms, is going to make more money than it being sold only on one. For example, the last of us sold very well on PS3 and PS4. Yet millions more were sold when it released on PC. They aren't regretting having millions more in their pocket. You should go to PS if you want. All I'm saying is that the exclusives you are getting will be temporary exclusives, as they already said they will bring their first party games to PC 2-3 years after they release. Only difference is Xbox is bringing their games to more than just PC and making a butt load of money as a result. You should definitely go to )S though, maybe in a few years more of the Xbox library will be available there. Not sure if all of it will but maybe enough for it to be a great deal. So long as you don't mind the $70 price tag anyway.
@Sifi you do realise that PS and GP are practically the same price right? You mention you can buy GP on 3rd party sites, yet conveniently forget to mention that Sony regularly offers PS plus at a discount. (Something MS never does) making both similar prices by the time you mess about with conversion and so forth.
Sure PS doesn’t offer day 1, but it has a larger catalogue. So both work out pretty similar.
And regarding game prices, they are often pretty much the same. Or very minor differences between the 2 systems. Trying to claim otherwise is just fanboy nonsense.
Like the top commenter said, it's sad to see this. What Xbox fans got from competitor anyway ... nothing. Nothing worthy to remember and especially not at the same level as HiFi Rush, if that game end up being what's being talked here.
@GrumpyDev why does it matter? It makes me regreting buying xbox SX instead of ps5...they got GOW horizon and psychornaut 2 and hi fi rush maybe starfield next year?
It matter because poeple wont want an xbox when the few exclusive games are released on PS when its not the other way around
Its good that im gaming on my laptop right now
@TakeItEasy PS won’t get starfield.
I don’t think you will see the major AAA games going over.
I keep saying that Xbox won’t go 3rd party only but maybe I’m trying to convince myself too much?
If we are left with just Sony PlayStation - Nintendo will plough their own furrow - then gaming is dead. There will be zero competition in making games.
Maybe it’s time that Spencer came out any put these rumours to bed because it’s actually destroying the faith in the Xbox brand.
Current Xbox will probably bring Starfield to PS5 as an apology for buying ABK & announce it publicly.
This stuff doesn't bother me, as the current generation is so incredibly boring both my XSX & PS5 have turned beige over time.
If it gives the game a bigger audience and increases the chance of a sequel happening then I'm all for it.
And the way it was shadow dropped and didn't get a physical release shows me that Microsoft weren't exactly excited about it themselves.
Do it, I say. The more people who can play games, the better.
Hell, I wish Nintendo would do the same thing and port some of its games to other platforms. I'd kill for Mario Wonder, Fire Emblem Engage and Tears of the Kingdom on PC.
@GrumpyDev Most of me agrees with your stance. Games should be for everyone and cross-platform where possible.
BUT exclusives have always been important to building your platform and attracting users, without them you are basically just a large publisher not a platform holder.
However if true I don't think this 'leak' will mean what people think. More likely something will be coming to Switch not PlayStation if it's single player, perhaps PS if it's a live service.
The only other reason I could see them doing more is if they want to butter up regulators ahead of another new acquisition. They could then use X game/s coming to other platforms as evidence to show they aren't going to make everything exclusive. Which frankly would be smart business.
it's like xbox has no fight in them at all.
Stephen Totilo formerly of Axios says he's heard it's Sea of Thieves.
As a live service multiplayer game, makes sense to expand the player base and it acts as a brand ambassador
Real gamers don't give a fig. Everything playable wherever on whatever you like is fine. If there's an exclusive to XboX buy it on your xbox. If it's PS buy it on your PS.
I understand that to have multiple consoles/subscriptions takes a certain amount of disposable income. But being a full time working gen X, idc.
I'm sorry for people who can't afford multiple systems, but meh, that's life kids.
