Few games are as influential to their respective genres as DOOM is to the first-person shooter, so it's hardly surprising to see lots of industry folks post online about the franchise's 30th birthday. Of course, the IP is now owned by Microsoft, and Phil Spencer & co. have hopped on social media to wish the first game a happy birthday.
Speaking of Phil, the Xbox boss described DOOM as "the game that changed video games forever" in his personal Twitter post about the anniversary:
Xbox's Aaron Greenberg has also posted about the landmark achievement - going on to namedrop some famous Xbox titles that have been inspired by id Software's seminal shooter:
They're both right aren't they - DOOM really did shape the first-person shooter as we know it today so it absolutely deserves all the appreciation it's getting on the game's big b'day. Happy Birthday DOOM, the likes of Halo & Call of Duty owe a lot to your success!

Can't wait to see what ID has been working on
I remember playing Doom on the PC but was influenced by some 3D Maze games that also put you in a First Person perspective. I'm sure one had a tank that shot to clear enemies, but that was a 'fixed' barrel and only shot forward - couldn't aim up/down/left/right. As tech advanced, the mazes became more complex with more 'verticality' and gave more control to aim so games like Doom evolved from those early 3D maze games in my opinion.
That being said, Doom is still the grand-daddy of the FPS genre as it was that games, especially with its MP, that inspired and pushed others to create their own FPS games and popularising the 'FPS' genre. For some, their 'first' may have been Goldeneye a few years later or Quake but Doom was the first I know that popularised the MP aspect of FPS.
Talking of id Software, I wonder if they are 'ready' to reveal what they will follow up Doom: Eternal with. Personally didn't enjoy or play the MP modes on the recent Dooms, and prefer Doom 2016 to Doom: Eternal myself...
Before FPS was even a term they were called "Doom clones" although it wasn't the first FPS, or even the first by id, such was it's influence that this is what they were known as. So many good memories across the series... but 30 years? Damn now I feel old
I actually just played some Doom Eternal last night, but it's probably my least favorite Doom by now. Doom 3 will always be the best IMO, it pushed the concept forward in ways the later ones never did, and the original release could be considered survival horror.
