'DOOM 4' eventually became just DOOM at some point during its development, as legendary dev id Software rebooted the series back in 2016, dropping any sort of subtitle. The game essentially reinvented the franchise after DOOM 3, but at one stage, the title was much, much closer to the 'survival horror' style of the previous series entry.
As seen in a new leaked concept trailer, DOOM 2016 was once planned as a more direct sequel to DOOM 3 - even baring the number four in its title. It was also much darker in tone compared to what we eventually got. Here, take a look (headphone users beware, it's pretty loud):
This clip was first spotted on an id Software developer's Artstation page, although the original has now been removed. Of course, the internet sees what the internet sees, and now this relic of DOOM development is archived for all to see!
This is a very interesting look back at what became a pivotal development period for id Software. In the end, we absolutely loved how 'DOOM 4' turned out — and it's sequel DOOM Eternal for that matter — but still, things could have been very different it seems.
Id Software is now under Xbox ownership via Bethesda, which makes us even more intrigued by what's next for the longtime DOOM developer. Hopefully we see something from them soon enough!
Would you have liked to see this version of 'DOOM 4' come to market? Let us know your thoughts.

Looks more horror focused…basically a mix of doom 3 and what we did end up getting.
I’d love to see a more horror focused suspense driven game in that engine though!
That looks brilliant. VERY different to Doom (2016) they ended up making and i'm glad they stuck with that track, but i'd have still loved to see that other game.
Personally, I loved the way they brought Doom to a 'new' era with Doom 3 with more 'Story' and more survival horror than totally action orientated as Doom & Eternal turned out.
I actually prefer Wolfenstein these days to 'Doom' for this reason - more 'Story' than just clearing enemies in every area with some annoying platforming - especially if you want to collect everything too - and there isn't really a 'Story'.
Based on what we know about Doom 4, before it became 'Doom', I think I would have preferred it but then I did buy Doom 3 a few times on different platforms as I thought it was a great way to bring Doom to a modern era with more 'depth' and more character, more 'story' too...
Doom 3 was great. It was much more story driven/survival horror based and it was actually playable without dying every thirty seconds. I didn't like Doom Eternal at all.
Maybe the more narrative/survival horror take could come back as sub series. So we have the full speed action adventures of the Doom Slayer in the style of DOOM/Eternal and then have this slower more horror angle with a different character within the Doom universe
Surprised for all the love Doom 3 gets here. I think it could me modded and tweaked into something worthwhile but as it stands the current release kinda sucks. Nerfed shotgun, crappy versions of the Doom enemies (they look fine in still artwork I guess), pretty bland story, and crappy survival horror mechanics.
I loved it when it first came out but it really hasn't aged well. Loved Doom 2016 to death though.

A Doom horror series would be awesome. Doom 3 is still my favorite doom even though I know a lot of the OG doom guys did not like it
Eeew, not back to the horror Doom3 again! I thought they learned their lesson after a successful 2 game reboot back to the high energy adrenaline rush the series is supposed to be! If it's back to the Doom3 vision of doom, I won't be touching it even on GP.
I actually preferred Doom 3 over the 2016 reboot and Eternal despite enjoying both games. Doom 3 was more story and horror focused, whereas the reboot and Eternal took out the horror element and just made it a fast paced shooter where you just cleared out an area of enemies before moving on.
What I love about games like Doom 3 is the beginning of the game, everything seems fine with everybody going about their business then suddenly the s*** hits the fan, throwing you into the chaos and nightmare. I’m actually looking forward to trying out both Doom games on the PSVR as those are the only ones I’ve not played in the series.
The lack of story has hurt the rebooted series, as far as I am concerned, and the latest entry was often so chaotic that it became unenjoyable at points too. It's more like an arena shooter than a storied game, which for me is a huge step backwards...
Looks great, maybe id should make new ip with this horror type settings
