Hi All! I'm very excited that Elite: Dangerous is coming to Xbox One - the space trading game has come along in leaps and bounds since it's announcement as a PC centric space-flight sim. I must admit that I was pretty despondent when both Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous were PC only so this can only be good.

Currently there is no way to add more Topics in the Games section of the forum, so for now I have created this thread where we can talk about Elite - past, present and future, what factions you are going to align with, what ships you are excited to fly, what role you will take on.

While we wait for the game to drop on console take a look at Galnet. Every day Frontier Developments release news from the galaxy in small bite-sized chunks. Not only does this provide background lore for the game but it also tells you important in-game events such as planets where you could get better prices for your cargo or where to sign up for battles. A recent example is the creation of a "Silk Road" - a group of major star ports between which you are protected by both NPCs and real players from the threat of piracy.

I do worry about you sometimes Red 😀😀😀. I'm well stoked for this, I remember playing the first on a BBC Micro and spending forever trying to dock!

Absolutely pumped to give this a try. Loved the original on my Amstrad, and Frontier: Elite II was where it was AT on the Amiga. Spent way too many hours not being very good at either of them.

I used to be a Computer Engineer (Mainframe) back in the 80's. Site based for a while, a lot of your time was spent doing nothing (you were basically there to provide an instant response if there were system problems - broken air traffic control bit of an issue!). We had a BBC micro in the office there basically running Elite 24x7. Dunno how many days I sank into it back then. Basically we were getting paid to play Elite part time 😅😅😅😅

@sorethumbed that sounds great! Question to both you and @SuperKMx: What was your main profession or did you have a go at everything?

I've really started to get a look at the specs of this game and it just seems to get better, especially when there is SCIENCE to be had! Did you know that space is cold? I'm talking really cold...close to absolute zero or -273oC. By using thermal cameras to detect heat sources astronomers can spot suns, nebulae and gas giants from the glow they give off. Now imaging you are sat on a space ship - it's got a power plant to give you energy, keep you warm and power the new heated cup holder you just had installed. If someone is looking for you, all they have to do is find you bright heat light against a cold black backdrop. Not ideal if you want to get the drop on someone or smuggle objects into a space port.

That's where Silent Running comes in.

Say you are carrying black market liquor but when you approach a station the automated scan will find the cargo and blast you into a million fragments. But...you are a smart smuggler (clever you!) and activate silent running. Vents are closed, engines run at reduced capacity or not at all - your bright light becomes the faintest glimmer as you drift towards the station using pure momentum. This silence does come at a price however. If you are stuck in a box with a radiator, the temperature is going to build i.e every heat source in your ship is being internalised which will cook you in your seat. There is word of a work around but I would need to get my hands on the game.

Latest from GalNet - The Emperor is just about alive after an attempt on his life was foiled. An inquisition to LTT 9810 has uncovered several facts that may show a powerplay in the upper echelons. Expect the economy of LTT 9810 to tank in response to increased Imperial scrutiny.

I had a go at pretty much everything, but I was mainly an awful, awful trader who bought things that sounded cool and then found that he couldn't sell them at a profit just by saying "BUT IT SOUNDS AWESOME!"

I spent most of my working life as an Engineer in one shape or form, RAF, TV Engineer, Missile Engineer, Diamond Mine Instrument Engineer then Computers. When I got too old for that I moved into sales. Also, as a sideline, ran a small recording studio.

I thought we were talking about Elite in-game professions!

In real life, I've worked in retail and in technical support, I was an assistant odds compiler for a bookmaker for a spell. Moved on to be a software developer (applications, not games!) and web coder/site designer. Now, I run my own web design/coding agency, edit and write for a heavy metal music site, and manage the social profiles and sites of a number of relatively well-known musicians. Oh, and edit Pure Xbox too, of course...

Hi All, after a massive Monster Energy binge yesterday to get the creative writing juices flowing I successfully managed to avoid sleeping the entire night. /

In that time I had my first go at Elite: Dangerous and it's great! Only really played the tutorial missions so have yet to go into the big bad outside world. The controls take some getting used to so this will probably be what I am streaming tonight. If you fancy yourself a bit of a flying ace then come along and we'll go through some basic flight controls.

See my Twitch streaming page for the details

So is this available now then? I scoured every part of the dashboard last night and it was nowhere to be found...

Just a general heads up I don't think you need to be in the preview program for this to work. Just head over to the link above and you can download the game from there.

Thanks for the link - could only find option to buy it or get the soundtrack on the smartglass app. Demo was nowhere to be seen...

Hopefully it'll be downloaded by the time I get home from work...

Had an hour with this, docking is easier than I remember. Combat is the same level of frustration whereby other targets climb the screen in front of you just slightly faster than you can keep them in the VF. Weird, same as I remember but with vastly improved graphics. This could well be good.

I'll give it a watch on the iPad then. Believe me, that hour goes by really quickly! You have got time to nail at least one achievement though!

Was impressed enough to buy this when the demo ran out !

I'm still going through the training missions... failed at the point where you have to destroy 'big momma' or something like that...

Then got distracted by trying out all my backwards compatible games lol but will go back to this tomorrow
