We've been hammering the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 beta over the last few days, to get a feel for how Treyarch's latest is shaping up ahead of its Xbox Game Pass launch next month. Of course, these impressions are early doors - but we have hit the beta weekend one level cap - so here's what we think of the title so far.
Returning to its core Black Ops series, the team at Treyarch has finally moved over to the new Call of Duty engine that was first introduced in 2019's Modern Warfare - and you can tell. For better or for worse, Black Ops has never felt more 'Modern Warfare' than it does here in Black Ops 6. Features like aim-down-sight reloading and tactical sprint are here, and generally speaking, the core gameplay will feel quite familiar if you've played the last few COD releases.
It's a good job, then, that the game's gunplay is still pretty much unmatched on console. Shooting feels incredibly tight, and the animation work is stellar across the board in BO6. Every weapon type, from assault rifles and SMGs to sniper rifles and shotguns, feels water-tight - and you can instantly tell why people just keep on lapping this series up, year in, year out. The gunplay is definitely a marked improvement over 2021's Vanguard as well; the last non-Modern Warfare COD title.

When it comes to maps, we've had four to mess around with during the beta's opening weekend (we should add that extra maps are also coming during weekend two). So far, we've got stuck into some of COD's staple game modes on Derelict, Rewind, Scud and Skyline, and we have mixed feelings on these maps so far. Derelict has been a highlight for us — with its long-range sightlines and appealing, overgrown aesthetic — but the rest of them have felt quite generic to us so far. Our overall opinion on these maps may change down the line once the full game is out, but we don't see any of these four becoming COD classics in years to come.
One feature that's future is also up for debate right now is the game's new 'omnidirectional' movement mechanics. Discussed extensively in the run up to release, Black Ops 6 brings an overhauled movement system to COD - in what's perhaps the biggest core shakeup to the series since Advanced Warfare's jetpack-jumping back in 2014. And, to be honest, we're not convinced by it just yet.
These advanced mechanics all feel a bit fiddly when playing on controller, at least based on our time with the beta. You've got new options to sprint, slide and dive in different directions, and while every now and then you pull a cool-ass move off, most of the time it feels like pointing and shooting works just as well for your average player. Black Ops 6 has quite a quick time-to-kill, quicker than Black Ops 4 and Black Ops Cold War, and that TTK feels somewhat at odds with the game's new advanced movement mechanics. It's hard to know which mechanics are worth engaging with in the heat of battle!
We're also slightly wary of how omnidirectional movement will further benefit mouse and keyboard players. We know, we know, the controller vs. M&KB debate is getting a little tired these days - but we can easily see your typical play-all-day Twitch streamer abusing these movement mechanics on PC. Call us a big old noob if you'd like, but there could be a real temptation to turn cross-play off for Black Ops 6 multiplayer. We do want to add that we've not really seen this take hold in the beta - we're just wary of it potentially affecting the full release. Omnidirectional movement will likely increase the game's skill-gap, and whether that's a good or a bad thing is largely down to personal opinion - we've just always seen COD as a casual shooter and we hope the series retains some of that easy playability.

With Black Ops 6, Treyarch is definitely tweaking the Call of Duty formula, and they should be applauded for that given how similar some of these releases typically are. After putting a good amount of time into the beta though, we think these tweaks have led to mixed results so far. The merging of Black Ops and Modern Warfare gunplay feels fantastic, and the speed of gameplay is right on-point, but we have reservations about the new movement mechanics - and those four initial beta maps are average at best as well.
Remember though, PvP multiplayer is just one slice of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and the full release will deliver so much more than that for Xbox Game Pass members. Raven Software's campaign is shaping up nicely, Zombies looks great this year, and we've got Warzone battle royale integration to come as well. We still have high hopes for Black Ops 6 this October, but it remains to be seen how much multiplayer we'll be playing in this year's release after going hands on with the beta.
Have you been playing the Black Ops 6 beta? What do you think of it? Come and discuss it with us down in the comments!

@Kezelpaso you unlocked Squish yet?
Tried it out for a while.. not for me. But then no CoD really is, so that tracks.
However, I haven't played CoD in years and BO6 felt just as they ever did. Honestly, I couldn't tell these games apart.
I amy give the campaign a try if reviews say it’s decent.
Not an online multiplayer fan so won’t be touching that.
This year’s cod feels really promising due to the beta. Omnimovement seems a bit hit or miss and needs a bit more work but I’m glad they are adding new features to the game.
They have suprised me with this one. Gameplay is amazing, really refreshing!
Glad they are atleast trying to shake things up a bit with omnimovement ......will I probably use all the new things nope ...but defo will be using the dive etc
Didn't play much of mw3 ...had a rest ...will give this one a go
@Markatron84 no
I really like it. The new movement doesn't change my approach too much and also isn't ruining the balance so far. I have been able to kill the guy diving into the room or around the corner way more than he kills me (so far).
Loving the new movement in the game sprinting sideways is cool and works well in the gameplay much better to play than the current games multiplayer for me I think it's great only playing it because it's gamepass it's great two thumbs up 👍👍
I'll be honest, playing the beta and really enjoying the maps and gunplay. So fun! I didn't bother with MW3, but since it's free to me with gamepass...
I’d like to try it but 350 GB is absolutely insane.
Loving it so far! Best COD experience in a while. Much needed success on all fronts.
Not liking the changes they made to the gameplay at all. I'll play the campaign but won't be playing the multiplayer when the game launches.
@Ricky-Spanish Lol. What?
Best Call of Duty since Black Ops 3.
Tired of boots on the ground, glad I can flail my body more like Quake and the engine this was built from. Definitely a higher skill ceiling from more movement options.
First COD I'll buy in years.
It feels better to play with keyboard and mouse though than controller, and on PC. Tried all 4 setups XSX controller/XSX KB+m/PC KB+m/PC controller.
I think the issue is keybinds/inputs and you really need paddles for diving, sliding, and crouching on controller.
Where's Nuketown? How can this be a Black Ops game without Nuketown?
Haven't liked a cod since modern warfare 2019 and really didn't like the beta it just seems too fast and twitchy for my liking
Couldn’t get to grips with the movement at all, only tried the training and decided it wasn’t for me. Will play the campaign when it lands but online multiplayer not for me. Hadn’t played CoD for years until MWIII dropped onto Gamepass and really like that, so I’m still hopeful this will be something I’ll enjoy.
Best COD I ever played in multiplayer. Omnimovement is here to stay. I won’t return to other CODs after the beta ends. It’s that good for me.
I see the movement stuff is splitting opinion, just as I expected! I think it'll take some time to see where the community lands on it
I hit the level cap last night and I really enjoyed my experience. It is so fast but the Derelict map needs tweaking as the train cart spawn point is a choke point for sure!
@Romans12 A single misspelled word and you don't know what I'm saying says more about you than me buddy have a great day 👍
@Kezelpaso I love the new movement In the game much faster and fluid!
I’m enjoying the beta but it doesn’t feel like a black ops….. It feels like Modern Warfare 4. CODs used to differ quite a lot from each other in gameplay, tone, UI, weapons etc year to year but now they seem to have just settled on a formula which they iterate on slightly. It’s working because the gameplay is solid and it still sells ridiculous amounts but they are all kind of just merging into one and don’t seem to have a personality of their own.
@GeeEssEff Yep, I thought this and am still wrapping my head around it. As I said in the review, the gunplay is really good and the merging with MW works... but this really is the least 'Black Ops' feeling Black Ops game so far...
I actually thought the feel of BO4 was really good... just a shame about some of the other decisions made with that game.
@Kezelpaso I loved Blops 3 and 4 and could never understand the backlash to them. They actually dared to try something different and quirky. I think the writing was on the wall with Cold War though as that basically felt like MW with a 80s reskin. I was hoping it was just a blip and we would get back to the Blops of old with this one but looks like they are quite happy to not change up the recipe too much moving forward.
Also completely agree with you about the movement being a potential issue. I was playing last night and some dude I was in a fight with suddenly did some weird direction change, jumped, slid on landing and had got completely behind me before I even had time to blink. The whole thing just felt completely unnatural and looked bizarre.
@GeeEssEff Yeah, Cold War was like a hybrid but still felt a bit more Treyarch, BO6 is definitely more MW feeling.
I think time will tell on movement, maybe they'll tweak it. Definitely some teething problems there at the moment.
@Markatron84 Yup I'm already lvl. 20 I'm just trying to rank up my guns now
@ZAHMED Same, it works and it doesn't at the same time. I primarily just use corners and mounting. I'm never sprinting and then dolphin diving. I see so many people using it just to get killed by the people NOT using the omni-movement system during gameplay.
@awp69 you dont have to install it all just I stall the beta n the main cod but it's less than 100 GB I think
The gunsmith is actually decent no having to decide all the numbers to balance ya gun I hated all attachments doing plus 10 but mi is 15 on something else I just want fmj quickdraw n run n gun like the old days 😂
I really really like this beta. Just upgraded to the Vault edition.
