As we near the Xbox Game Pass release of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a final batch of previews have landed for the upcoming RPG - so we thought we'd gather some of them here to give you a flavour of the game ahead of its Game Pass arrival next month.
These are pre-release previews based on a few hours of gameplay, so that's worth baring in mind as you get stuck into them. The full version of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be available for all Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on April 24th, and it'll also be included with PC Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
IGN
"When my time Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was up, I wasn’t ready to stop. I wanted to fight more battles, learn more about the world, and spend more time with these characters. Sandfall Interactive is a new studio, but you’d never know this was their first game from playing it. Surprise. Conviction. Curiosity. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 nails all three. It had my interest before I played it; now it has my undivided attention. If Sandfall can stick the landing, they’ll have put together something remarkable."
GamesRadar
"Clair Obscur might not quite be the exact flavor of turn-based AAA RPG I've been longing for, but after a few hours getting to grips with its battle systems, I've fallen with its combat regardless. If the game's world and story can make good on the promise teased by its early hours, RPG fans are in for something truly special."
Kotaku
"In the short time I got to play Expedition 33, it introduced plenty of lore and jargon that I hope will make more sense when seen in the context of the full game, but even if I don’t know what all its proper nouns mean yet, I’m already intrigued by how the game commits to a broken world that feels beyond saving. And yet, the party moves forward anyway. It’s tantalizing, and luckily the turn-based combat is just as compelling."
TechRadar
"Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 then, is shaping up to be the JRPG for people who grew tired of JRPGs. While recent years have seen no shortage of nostalgia-soaked JRPG homages, Sandfall Interactive seems determined not to just rehash the past, but to ensure the genre’s future."
Eurogamer
"It's this combat that still makes me excited for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but please for the love of all that's holy, I'm going to need a goddamn map if I'm ever going to be as thrilled by the exploration side of the game. Just like the ever-present 33-painted pillar on the horizon, I can clearly see the brilliance lying at the heart of this game. I just hope that its final release on April 24th won't get too bogged down in the tedium of navigation to let us appreciate it in all its glory."
The Gamer
"After four hours with Clair Obscur I am now aggressively optimistic about the full experience. Sandfall is taking a cherished formula and moulding it around the studio's budding identity. The unique touches added to combat and exploration elevate the entire experience, and I hope this ambition is able to reach its full potential when it arrives this April."
GameReactor
"So far, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is shaping up to be a real dark horse for 2025. A game that is so clear in its commitment to its vision that it is difficult not to fall for it. I never thought of myself as a JRPG fan before, but this more active take on the traditional formula has hooked me more than I thought it would, and I'm eager for more."

This one's gonna be amazing! Another big Game Pass win. I might buy it anyways. I'm really hyped!
I think this will be one of the breakout hits of 2025.
@Lup This is fantastic news. This is my most excited for game since its reveal. I may be purchasing this one as well. Now I'm going to have to finish Avowed and dabble in Suikoden 1 and 2 before this one releases.
Cant wait for this one. It looks, and sounds amazing. This will be one that I lose countless hours in.
That TechRadar snippet sounds like music to my ears.
I haven't been this excited for a game in a long time.
Really looking forward to playing this game, but I am gutted that missed out on the Collector's Edition with the statue. Now that I failed to get the CE, I might just play it on the Game Pass, as buying the game almost seems pointless now...
Another win for Game Pass. You know, people say a subscription service isn't good for gaming because people aren't buying the games. Only then do you realise that actually, I do not think that there has ever been a more important time for it because in fact it gives games like this an opportunity and not just that but studios can actually make games knowing that their games will get played and the reward from that is huge. Especially since it's costing so much to take risks on game development these days. A service like Game Pass with Microsoft's support I actually believe is going to be really important next gen for them and for new IP. We may just see that more next gen.
I've been getting burnt out on rpgs but I need to play this. Looks amazing and the fact that it's their first game, makes me want to play that much more.
@VivaUtd its mutiplat anyways so people gonna buy on other platforms and GP serves as a free word of mouth ads as more people will naturally try the game.
I dont know how this hurts either MS or developer.
I'm really looking forward to this. Part of me wants to buy it elsewhere, but that seems stupid when it's on game pass and I don't have enough funds for everything else I want to buy!
It's another great game for the service for sure.
@VivaUtd Its not really about Subscription services being good or bad. Its as simple as they likely believe the revenue from the sub service offer will be close enough or higher than the sales would be on their own via traditional means.
@VivaUtd Whilst I like what your saying, surely the fact that MS themselves have to sell their own titles on other formats in order to make the returns they need raises a huge question over what you are stating?
Surely this suggests the service is a winner for smaller studios looking for exposure, but not the answer for big AAA titles from established developers?
Before anyone hounds me for expressing an honest view, it's offered in the spirit of debate 😄
People buy games, but they're buying less then ever before. My point still stands on the basis that having a subscription service isn't as bad as some of the crowd makes out. Just like having cloud gaming that's becoming more popular. Of course, it's third-party. But what I am saying is that for those people that cannot afford to buy but still want to maintain a level of support by other metrics. Then of course, Xbox is your destination for that and with Sony the way they're operating whether you like it or not. That's not going to change. I personally believe that even with Xbox games being on PlayStation. It's no longer about this tribal escapade that people decide they want to be on and more about how the industry can help video game developers and game studios. Hopefully that's clarified things for you!
@Titntin I think you are pretty much spot on that it benefits AA far more than AAA as a general rule. However with each and every games thats not 1st party its a gamble on the price. Sometimes MS willl get a great deal, and the dev could lose out if the game blows up. Other times a game might bomb and the dev gets a great deal and MS lose out due to the wasted spend.
Its just that more often for AA it will work out, and I would argue it works out more for XB as the lower install base presents a bigger risk for those games. Which is not a dig at the install base, its just a fact that devs have to address.
Just to extend on my point also. Banishers: Ghost of Eden. A acclaimed success story in terms of reviews. I've personally just bought it on my Xbox in the sale. It sold poorly.
I do not mind buying games either because I want to support great games. However, I think the way the industry states that something is a success or not has to change. I believe that Game Pass 'could' possibly could have more a say on this. You know, people say, oh Xbox is done. I do not think that's the case at all. In fact, options are good for both studios and consumers. How we indulge in gaming content is changing. It shouldn't matter how it's played and who is writing the checks as long as it's sustainable. Microsoft are able to do it and sure the optics are important here because their games are indeed coming over to PlayStation.
However, what this represents is how it benefits the consumer no matter how you go about choosing a game to play. I say it again, I think if Microsoft step more into that momentum they will gain traction with getting more people to play new IP or any game that hits the platform. Not matter if it's Xbox, PC or your phone. It's all about the right messaging and hopefully a next gen leans more into this because I actually believe it could keep great game experiences coming that aren't motion-capture incredibly expensive to make. Ultimately, we're seeing a wind of change and I'm not just referencing the great band Scorpions. 🙂👍
@Ilyn @VivaUtd Also it is worth mentioning the actual budget and cost of making the game.
Budget and development cost for, say, Brotato versus GTA6 are astronomically different.
If being on subscription service was so wonderful and profitable, then EVERY game would be on game pass day one. But they aren't.
And that should tell anyone what they need to know.
@GuyinPA75 Oh yeah, but I never made that comparison. Game Pass is actually a great service and it's showing its value this year. Not everything always needs to be a highly constructed videogame. No, every game is not on Game Pass but that doesn't mean that it's not a great option or that it doesn't offer something in terms of audience. I personally believe Xbox Game Pass is a wonderful service and it's being backed up by everything coming out this year. Options are always good and anyone that denies that really isn't seeing the whole story. Instead, they're focusing on a narrative that meets there's. Being open-minded to the benefits really is quite nice especially when like I say consumers are getting a great deal and studios potentially find a place they can get more people to play and engage. It's not just Xbox Game Pass however, look at PlayStation Plus and the recently added Dragons Age: Veilguard. A failed game but on PlayStation it's getting a second chance. Its really about seeing things for what they are. I always love having these constructive discussions with everyone. It doesn't matter what platform your playing to me as long as we're all having fun!
Will probably have to be scoring 10s for me to give it a go ...jprg ain't really my thing
I have never been able to get into turn-based RPGs. I might give this a try on Game Pass but with limited time now to play it'll take me a while to even get round to trying
I remember seeing articles about this game and never looking into it. Finally read this article and it made me look up gameplay... holy crap! How did I sleep on this game for so long haha. I'm 100% playing this, even crazier is that it's on GamePass.
It looks like a not bad game, but unfortunately it's not really a game I am personally interested in. I am personally way more interested in South of Midnight. But I might see if it catches my interest. So many hit titles added to game pass in 2025.
I hope they pull it off. Big deal for game pass if so. Turn based rpgs aren’t the most common genre on there.
