We've been excited for Sandfall Interactive's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ever since it was announced for Xbox Game Pass a little while ago, but after watching today's Xbox Developer Direct Showcase, it's become a must-play!
The game, which now has a release date of April 24, 2025, takes the form of a turn-based RPG featuring unique real-time mechanics, and follows a group of adventurers in their attempt to save their lives and prevent the evil Paintress from "painting death".
Confused? Here's a bit more context to the story and the basics of gameplay:
"Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints her cursed number. And everyone of that age turns to smoke and fades away. Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. Tomorrow she’ll wake and paint “33.” And tomorrow we depart on our final mission - Destroy the Paintress, so she can never paint death again."
"In this evolution of JRPGs, real-time actions enhance the heart of turn-based combat. Craft unique builds for your Expeditioners that fit your playstyle via gear, stats, skills, and character synergies. Open an active dimension in combat - dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free aim system."
Just to clarify, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not being published by Xbox Game Studios despite featuring in the Xbox Developer Direct event, but nevertheless is definitely one of the most highly-anticipated titles on our short-term radar!

I'm very excited for this one and the fact that it's coming in only 3 months is the icing on the cake!
To be honest, if this plays half as good as it looked at today's presentation, this could be one hell of a heavy hitting dark horse.
Right up my street.
Fingers crossed they nail the release!
This might be a low-key Game of the Year contender right here!
Hadn't heard of it but most certainly on my radar now!
Unexpectedly from small studio, this looks like a proper AAA game. excited
Omg, everything about this looks so much fun. Dark Fantasy JRPG, everything I was hoping FF16 was going to be.
Also, what an excellent premise, I bet the story is going to be very nihilistic, which is perfect for the current times we are in. lol.
This one -again- stole the show. And it's gonna be an early birthday present for me. Long live Game Pass.
This is easily my most anticipated game of the year, so far. Everything they have shown looks incredible.
Yes. Odd combination of final fantasy and Logan's Run.
But it looks fun. Graphics are looking solid. Game pass day one for me.
I don't know. I hear all this positive feedback about tonight's show, but I wasn't really blown away by anything. I've had a Series X for 1,5 years now but I guess I'm more of a PS guy after all. I haven't really felt any magic so far.
Too bad it launches 4 days after Assassin's Creed. Here's hoping that AC Shadows gets postponed once again, even though that would be a Skull and Bones situation at this point.
LE: I mistook AC release date and I am so glad I did. This game deserves praise.
for me this was the goat of the presentation its looks so pretty sweet cant wait to get my hands on 😊👌🤍🧡💚🍔🍟
This looks so, so good. It's also more Jrpg than FF with the combat system.
This game looks phenomenal. However, I have two questions:
1. What the hell is that thing flying around over the water?
2. Why is its arse hanging out?
Did they say real time? It looks like ok turn based but to me modern turn based and old turn based are kind of boring.
Like tactics games I'm ok with the board game like nature and a few video game tweaks I enjoy.
But to me unless it's Eternal Sonata (so kind of like Neptunia I guess) or Conception series with the different angles to attack (even if I think it needs refinement in areas as well) are more interesting then just stand, attack, menu control and maybe a few tweaks I find them still very boring.
Even Xenoblade I'm like why is X so still getting attacked yet I'm moving away. It felt very turn based standing there type functionality yet third person moving, it seemed rather strange to me. I have not played Xenoblade 1-3 though but X's approach was just so weird to me. I found the menu selection in X really nice but the attacks in execution from enemies rather stupid and unfair because it still wanted to be turn based limited of attack functionality. It's so stupid.
Also the trailer while nice visuals and ok worlds, the airship kind of thing, ok character models and fair world design, does make me go eh. It isn't that exciting really. It looks repetitive then anything and humanity repeating history/their favourite parts of games, where have I seen that before.
For as not that much excited as I am I'd say South of Midnight is probably the only game i care about and even then I don't care that much for it. Doom is 2016/Eternal but still a fair spin it's fine. I respect it. Ninja Gaiden 4 also respect but I suck at them compared to others of the genre, they are hard and fair for that audience but I'm not skilled enough. I've got plenty of older in the genre to play on old gens I'm good or others like Valkyrie Elysium or so odd types that come out I can wait for or never see as we see Souls clones too much instead.
