Yesterday, we brought you a little 'Talking Point' feature about whether you'd be disappointed if a potential 'Gears Collection' was to avoid featuring multiplayer components, and unsurprisingly, the majority vote was that you would!
That could be a future we're looking at though, as there are now two different people suggesting that the Gears Collection might ship without PvP multiplayer when it potentially arrives later this year. Someone known as DetectiveSeeds was the first, and now Windows Central editor Jez Corden says he's heard the same thing.
In a follow-up, Corden advised that he's going to dig deeper into the rumours to try and "get something concrete either way", so it's definitely worth taking everything with a pinch of salt for now - including what he's "heard" so far.
In case you missed it, yet another source known as eXtas1s mentioned recently that they believe the Gears Collection could be announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June, followed by a release at some point later this year.
How Important Is Multiplayer To A Gears Collection? (470 votes)
- It would HAVE to have multiplayer, simple as that!
- I'd say it's pretty important, yeah
- Somewhat important
- The campaign is the main thing, but multiplayer would be nice
- Not bothered about PvP, but it needs co-op
- No need for multiplayer at all!

Understandable. MCC was and to some degree still is a mess because it had too many moving parts.
Campaign local + online Co-Op with PC/PS5 crossplay and good netcode is good enough. And please no nickel and diming with pre-order bonuses, just full complete packages of the classic games.
I wonder if the Gears Collection will be a hub like Halo MCC & COD. So it will release with all the campaigns this year & then E Day in 2026. Which will include multiplayer & maps from all previous games.
I'm looking forward to the game but they really should have multiplayer in the collection there is a big PvP and horde community for gears feels like a bit of a slap in the face to me!
But the coalition have disappointed with every gears game they have touched so far why not keep that tradition going!!
Here's the gears collection you all wanted so bad but no multiplayer or horde guys sorry 🤷
As long as there's co-op I don't care. I also imagine it's quite hard to bring three different games PvP together successfully, it's possible but hard. Additionally it has the possibility of taking players away from other Gears 5 multiplayer which they may not want.
I have to say, I buy every Gears of War game, regardless of it being on GPU which I also have. In fact, I usually buy it twice as I also buy the Collector's Edition, which I seldom open. I even had to import the Gears 5 Collector's Edition from America because it wasn't sold here in the UK.
All that said, without Horde being included, and assuming that there will be no Collector's Edition, and despite how much I love the games, I cannot see me buying this. This one I shall be playing on GPU.
My reason for taking this view is that I play the trilogy annually anyway, and they hold up for the most part, but for me, since Gears of War 2, the vast, vast majority of hours I put into the games has been in Horde. That is where I get my monies worth, and as much as I am looking forward to playing these games again, it almost feels unnecessary to me to be buying them. Were Horde included, I would buy it without hesitation because I know I'm going to be invested for probably two thousand hours at least (which is what I currently have in Gears 5, for example).
The big question to me, though, is just how much will Microsoft be looking to charge for this Collection? We've seen pre-orders go up for Forza Horizon 5 on the PlayStation costing £54.99 for the base game. Yes, that game is more recent, but it is also a single game, and not a collection of at least 3 games that have been remastered to some degree. In other words, Microsoft will likely have put more work into The Marcus Fenix Collection, than they had to FH5. Knowing what Microsoft are like, even sans the multiplayer, I can see Microsoft charging at least £50 on the basis of the work undertaken, and the fact that there are 3 games (at least) included...
I think co-op in the Campaigns is a given, @themightyant. There is a rumour circulating that it will have cross-play, and if there is no multiplayer, then there can be no other reason for its inclusion (except possibly Horde, but it's looking increasingly likely that that is not included)...
@Fiendish-Beaver It sounds to me that the game is being made more for the playstation with no horde or multiplayer included just the campaigns so the playstation gamers can get into the story before E-day drops!
We probably wouldn't even be getting the collection if Microsoft hadn't decided to go multiplatform they don't have the love for gears like they do for halo!!
@cragis0001 thats a great question actually. I never thought of that. That could work. I am a huge GOW fanatic. So whatever is best for the IP i am all for. Plus the multiplayer is a bit old and hard for new players to get into. Most would just return to COD and Fortnite. So i look forward to see if E-day brings something new to multiplayer for Gears or sticks to the basics for the hardcore fans like myself that has played Gears 5 multiplayer for over 2K hours. But i really like your idea with that. I never even thought of them doing it like cod.
What I would say, @Ricky-Spanish, is it does have to be remembered that we did get a remaster of Gears of War, plus the rumours of the remastered trilogy have been circulating for probably approaching two years now.
The more I think about it, and the more often we hear that multiplayer still has not been included (despite being told that the remasters were finished this time last year), the more I believe that the reason we did not get them last year is because Microsoft were not adding in the multiplayer, as I had hoped, but they were in fact preparing the PlayStation version.
Thus, I don't think we wouldn't have got them were it not for the PlayStation, but in fact the game was delayed for us because of the PlayStation...
Hey, @FraserG. So I've been giving this a little bit of thought; do you think it is possible that when Phil Spencer popped a couple of achievements in (I think) Gears of War 2 recently, it was because he was playing the remastered trilogy?
Very often, in fact usually, games that receive a remaster share their achievements / trophies with the original game, and you can often get the choice to either import your previous save, in which case the achievement have already been earned, or you start afresh.
Just a thought...
@Fiendish-Beaver That's even worse 🤦 that said I'm still looking forward to it and will love playing through each campaign again but for me the real meat of the game is multiplayer and horde!
Such a let down!
I mean, @Ricky-Spanish, it's pure speculation on my part, mate. I could very easily be wrong...
I spends hundreds, and hundreds of hours playing Horde, @Ricky-Spanish. I'm currently number 91 in the World as an Engineer in Gears 5, and have put over 2000 hours into the game. I don't touch the multiplayer, and though I do go through the Gears 5 campaign each year, that only accounts for a small percentage of my overall time spent in the game. So for me, leaving out Horde is particularly painful.
I met 4 of my best mates playing Horde, and am Godfather to one of their children, purely as a consequence of playing Horde in Gears of War 2. My best memories of playing Horde come from GoW3, so yeah, it really sucks that it's not going to be included...
I love how they mentioned "it's PS5 Pro enhanced" but no mention that it's Series X enhanced. Lol. It's an Xbox game. I understand that its going to the Playstation, but this is an Xbox website. It always seems that there is a constant mention of the Playstation. It's insulting. It would be like me reading on Pushsquare that a God of War collection is coming out and it's going to be enhanced for the Series X with no mention of the Playstation.
@Fiendish-Beaver Yeah I totally get that i played ina clan in multiplayer and had a load of horde buddies of multiple nationalites to play with when I wasn't in multiplayer my friends list on Xbox is all from gears to this day just sucks that horde multiplayer community gets left behind but what can you do 🤷
Skipping multiplayer would be a major missed opportunity. A lot of people will be playing a Gears game for the first time and would be treated to a stripped down experience. This would be an awful choice.
I absolutely agree, @Ricky-Spanish & @BacklogBrad. As much as people enjoyed the first game, it was the community that played the multiplayer (there was no Horde in the first game) that really propelled the game into people's all time favourite lists.
I never played the PvP elements in any of the games, but even I know that it is extremely popular, and indeed, probably the biggest draw to the series. Thus, failing to include the multiplayer now is, to my mind, a massive mistake, because, to a great degree, Microsoft will be omitting what made the game so popular in the first place...
@HonestHick if they do it that way they can have all the campaigns in one place & merge the multiplayer into a live service model.
On the subject of clans, @Ricky-Spanish, though I, nor any of my mates were in a clan (as such) we were a team of 5, plus my son, who was the best sniper we had... at the age of 8...! 😂
Putting aside the rather questionable parenting on my behalf, my son was a crack shot with the sniper rifle, but even more deadly with the Snub Pistol. He was constantly taking out the Locust with headshots when we did Insane Horde runs in Gears of War 3. He was our stand-in whenever one of the 5 was not available, and because he wasn't allowed to be in the chat with the adults, he would often come downstairs to complain that this person or that had stolen his kill... 🤣
@cragis0001 i really hope thats the plan. It makes perfect sense. I would really love that as a hardcore Gears player.
@Fiendish-Beaver
1) its a rumour
2) no PvP multiplayer, but horde co-op could be a thing still
3) next year e-day will have both likely and they dont want to split userbase would be my guess
I can live without PvP. Co-op PvP is essential, but I don't see the omission of PvP as a massive downside.
Very excited about this.
We will play horde and PvP in the e-day.
The whole point of remastering 1-3 is the campaigns in 4k60 so I am really hyped. Recently beat ultimate edition on hard - so much fun.
@Romans12 except god of war collection is never coming to xbox lol.
Thats a new reality where MS games will shine on a (formerly) competing platform that is Playstation. Games will look better on a PRO version. All the famous titles will make it there eventually and I am sure next gen we will see all games coming day 1 on all platforms with no exceptions.
It does not deny that xbox is a good machine and if you are happy with it, enjoy GP and not into PS games to start with - then nothing really changes.
Thats of course unless next gen fully flops and loses 3rd party support.
I know its weird times but I think after discussing bazillion times all that Ms doing for more than a year at this point, most just already accepted their new strategy like it or not.
I think most people are either took it personally and switched platform or planning to do so next gen, or just with xbox regardless.
@HonestHick hopefully we find out soon enough. But if they make the collection into a hub. Then it may also explain the lack of multiplayer as they could start off with 4 & 5's then use the live service model to add the older maps, skins, modes etc.
It's all a rumour, @Millionski, but this rumour has been circulating for such a long time now that I'd be amazed if at the very least the MF Collection does not exist. I do suspect that it will ship without multiplayer though, as even that rumour was circulating this time last year.
The issue I have with it not having multiplayer is twofold; firstly, Microsoft will not be introducing PlayStation gamers to anything but the story, meaning in many ways, they will be missing out on what truly makes GoW special. Secondly, there are many Horde maps that are not available in 4 or 5, and I really miss the mutators that we used to have in 3. Whilst I do like being able to place fortifications wherever we like in 4 & 5, the card system we have now sucks big time in comparison, so I really would liked to have been able to return to those maps of old with mutators such as Vampire, Super-Reload etc., which made 3 such a blast to play...
When you say 'Hard', @Millionski, do you mean Hardcore or Insane? I agree, beating these games on the hardest setting is where the real fun is to be found.
Whenever I play the games for the first time, I always go through on Hardcore first so that I can enjoy the story, and then on Insane immediately after. That's one thing I have enjoyed about 4 & 5; the inclusion of Inconceivable. Nothing bests the thrill of beating those games solo on the hardest difficulty. I even beat Tactics on Insane recently. My next run in that game will be on Ironman, though I have to admit that I'm kind of dreading it... 😂
@Fiendish-Beaver I love that man I can't wait till my daughter wants to play co-op with me she is only 7 and only really plays Roblox I'm hoping we will be co-op champs in years to come!
And he is right they really shouldn't of stole his kills haha😂
My 8 year old is approaching 22 mow, @Ricky-Spanish, but he has recently been joining us in Horde in Gears 5. So we now have 4 of the original 6 playing each weekend. Difference is that now he is in the chat with us, and gets ribbed quite often with a cry of, "You stole my kill...!" 🤣
@cragis0001 i heard this rumor a few months back on my gears of war channels i follow. I didn’t put much stock in it but now that we are seeing it more this month. I suppose the guys i follow with gears channels know a good amount as well. That bring me to this SLIDE. The rumor on the channel was in E-day there will be a new slide move mechanic. The person said he is trying to find out if it will be in PVP or just campaign. Well my mind goes to what if the slide mechanic is a way to make PvP feel new and fresh to players. Maybe the plan is when E-day comes out they will slowly bring over the 1-3 maps with the slide move making the maps feel new. Plus for the Pro players this will excite E-sport players. I am liking where your thoughts and ideas are at and again i think you made one of the best idea’s i have heard yet and again i follow every outlet of Gears there is. Well played friend, i hope you are right and i hope the slide move is correct as well.
I guess I'll hold off on playing GoW3 then.
While many PS3/360 games on PS4/Xbox One cut multiplayer if the singleplayer was the focus. I do think it's odd to do so for Gears, that community is large for multiplayer so it would be a bit sad to cut it even if a lot of work.
I like the Uncharted 3 MP story co-op chapters. The online multiplayer PVP or wave after wave eh pass. But the story co-op ones is why I keep the PS3 version besides the differences in PS4 versions of the games being fine enough. Most others yeah I don't care their servers are dead and most don't mean much to me so the singleplayer is enough for me.
Sure MCC was a mess but I mean do we trust 343/Halo Studios no. XD It took them a while to work around it to what it is now before the PC versions even.
Whoever is working on this Gears collection should just make sure they handle it well of online co-op, split screen and whatever they can of a multiplayer suite.
Collection or 1 at a time to really get them right. 1 at a time is better to maintain. But knowing Microsoft or how studios function it won''t happen, sigh.
Then again is 1 based on the Ultimate edition remaster or just the 360 version?
I have no interest in these but even I know multiplayer is important to many people. I only played the singleplayer. I played Halo split screen multiplayer sometimes but mostly the campaign co-op split screen then gave up on 5 and it's terrible execution/no split screen and played it myself years later solo and it was, ok.
As I own the series on 360/4 Xbox One already besides 5 I played on Gamepass and didn't finish but even still. I don't care to get better versions at all. I'm happy on the old versions/got other games I'd rather play anyway. I'll replay the series when I feel like it. I tried 1 again and it was alright. But I have plenty of other third party shooters of PS3/360/Wii or PS2/Xbox/GameCube I'd rather play instead singleplayer.
For those that haven't and to get money from other platform customers or Gears fans willing to jump in again I mean they better handle them well.
I would say MP depends. If they were to release e-day for the holidays with MP I would say it would be fine just being the campaigns. Then build previous Gears MP into E-Day MP.
@HonestHick my theory of it being a hub follows the success of others like Halo MCC, COD. But also Fortnite & Roblox. As to some they are a community in themselves. It also has advantages for users of cloud streaming. As they can access any game in the series or mode from one spot. As for the multiplayer. If they follow the hub model they could go free to play. The campaigns would be classed as dlc. So 1-3 first then add the rest with the updated visuals & play mechanics.
@cragis0001 I would love to see it happen actually. I think it’s a great idea for us hardcore gears fans. Time will tell, we should know a lot more about Gears this June and of course next year is the 20th year of gears of war. So lot’s of news should be happening soon. I can’t wait to see it all unfold.
@HonestHick indeed can't believe it's been about 20 years since I played the first gears game lol makes me feel old 😂.
Honestly, couldn't be happier to hear no PVP.
@cragis0001 as they say time flies when your having fun.
So i did some digging on the collection and lot’s are saying they are hearing it will have co-op but no PVP. But the reason why makes sense. The rumor is the collection will not be out long by itself. E-day will hit shortly after. Not sure about that. But they continues to say the reason is MS doesn’t want to split the online PVP community up between collection and E-day. That makes sense but of course it’s deeper than that. E-day PVP will for sure have skins, weapon skins, and other things to buy live service style. So they want the player base on there buying that. Again makes sense. Plus i still hear there might be a slide feature in E-day wether that makes it into PVP or not we don’t know. So it’s looking all but confirmed PVP will not be there but Co-op will be and as for Horde mode it has been quiet on that front. It’s a day one buy for me as it’s my favorite IP in the world of games. But E-Day is the real excitement for me as i love PVP gears.
It does indeed.
It makes sense they'd wait for E Day & not have two clients to compete against themselves when it comes to multiplayer. Could that possibly add more weight to the collection being a hub? No sure. Multiplayer will definitely be a live service model. Will it be horde & PVP? As for the slide move? Will it be introduced in the collection or E Day?
