Update []: The rumours are continuing to swirl about this, as we've highlighted elsewhere:
Original Story: There's no concrete proof yet that a Gears Collection exists, but everyone seems to be talking about it following the recent rumours that have cropped up - especially the one that suggests it'll be revealed and released later this year.
In fact, the latest rumour we've come across suggests it might not feature PvP multiplayer, which has been mentioned by DetectiveSeeds on Twitter. We've never come across this apparent leaker / insider before, so it's hard to say how reliable their sources might prove, hence why we're making this a "Talking Point" rather than reporting it as a main story.
"Gears of War Collection should be releasing early to mid August. It is PS5 Pro enhanced, but I have been told NO Multiplayer PVP, campaign focus only."
"The game is loaded onto PS storefront on the back end (this is the same with others I have said in the past). It shows 1 player and does not show support for additional players. I asked about co-op, but no clarification on that yet."
Again, don't take this as fact or anything for now - but it's interesting to think about, right? If Xbox and The Coalition were to release a Gears Collection later this year, how detrimental would it be if multiplayer wasn't part of the package?
The big focus of a Collection would surely be to catch players up ahead of Gears of War: E-Day's release either later this year or next year, which means focusing on the campaign makes a lot of sense. That said, it's hard to fathom something like Halo: The Master Chief Collection not including multiplayer, and it feels like a similar situation here.
We'll be shocked if Xbox announces a Gears Collection at the Xbox Games Showcase in June that doesn't include multiplayer in some form, but who knows? There'd certainly be plenty of disgruntlement if that were to happen...

Having never played any of the series except a tiny bit of the remastered original, I genuinely don’t care about multiplayer at all. I want to do the story when it finally comes time for me to clean these off my backlog.
If it has online co-op I'm satisfied.
It wouldn't be a deal breaker but I would love some type of multiplayer in the game PvP and horde are both amazing in these games there would definitely be a community for the multiplayer part if they do make one.
Hopefully they do!
Maybe it could just be playstation not getting the multiplayer part!
Not bothered by PvP muliplayer, i'd only be playing the campaign, but I do like to play Gears co-op. However a lot of people do seem to like the multiplayer element.
I don’t care about multiplayer but it NEEDS coop or I have zero interest. Gears to me is first and foremost a coop game. Playing through with my wife is peak gaming for me.
If reasonably priced, then just the campaigns is not a deal breaker for me, though if that is the case, and if there is no Collector's Edition (I don't expect one), then I'll probably play it on the Game Pass any way. No matter what form the games take when they release, I cannot see it arriving without co-operative campaign play.
That said, the place that most people spend the majority of their time when playing these games is in competitive multiplayer, and co-operative Horde. For me, it's Horde, where I can spend a couple of thousand hours easily.
So, would I like to have at least Horde included? Absolutely. Playing Horde in Gears 2 is where I met my two best friends (indeed, I ended up becoming Godfather to the son of one of them), and where I added a third best friend in GoW3. My best memories of playing Gears of War is staying up ridiculously late in an effort to finish an Insane Horde in Gears 3. I still remember to this day staying up until 4 a.m. trying to finish an Insane run on The Slab, where my mate was the host, and so couldn't leave because the game would have ended because the game didn't feature host migration back then. Problem was, my mate had to be up for work at 5 a.m., and so we wouldn't let him leave! 🤣 Back then we had a rock solid group of people that knocked them out on a daily basis, and I still game weekly with my mate that I met playing GoW3, though now we play Gears 5 Horde for hours at a time instead. The others have all got children now, and so their gaming is restricted.
Anyway, would I prefer that Horde was included? Bloody right I would!
The rumours of an absence of multiplayer in the Collection were circulating this time last year, and my hope was that the delay in it's release was in order to facilitate its inclusion after the initial decision to leave it out had been reversed. My fear is that that time was in fact used to produce the PlayStation version instead. Not because I am against it going to the PlayStation, and though I continue to think that it is a mistake, I have come to accept that decision (sort of!), but because the rumour is that the game was ready to be released (sans the multiplayer) this time last year, and if the game was delayed just to make the PlayStation version, then I think that to be incredibly disrespectful to us Xbox gamers...
massive fail if no horde mode or online co-op
with publishers wanting to make multiplayer games but you release a game know for being multiplayer without multiplayer doesnt make sense
Not every game needs online multiplayer shoe-horned in.
Some sort of local co-op would be good.
Having a bunch of seperate multiplayer modes dose seem like it's going to have issues Halo MCC flashbacks but maybe instead they could bundle the Gears 5 MP with it instead.
Sure Gears 5 isn't going to be included in the collection but at least this would bolster Gears 5's multiplayer with new users coming from PS5 and (possibly) Switch/2.
@Justifier Yeah I think co-op MP is a must but I could live without PvP MP. Would be a strange move considering how Halo MCC has a heavy MP focus.
I'd be happy with them remastering the Campaigns and keeping the co-op options. I think they could do a Gears 'Online' package too with Horde, Beast and the MP modes - recreating all the Maps/modes etc from all previous Gears game specifically for Online.
Another option could be to make Gears 5 Online 'Free to Play' and add maps, modes etc from the Previous games - inc Judgement in as Seasonal content. Make it Multi-plat and sell Season Passes & Cosmetics. That way, you can keep the online separate, supported and not locked to a single Release/Campaign.
With 3 or 4 Campaigns, each with Co-op, I would rather see these have a full remake in UE5, maybe even expanded on and fleshed out a bit more than them just repackaging those games with all the Online content and I'd rather have them split Online into a separate release (if it releases at all) to save on storage space and/or enable more resources into the Campaigns
Yes it does need multiplayer. There is no better time for multiplayer now that they will have cross play with what should be a large audience.
I think the 360 games aged incredibly well so this collection is kind of unnecessary (besides getting the games on pc and ps5, which is the real purpose of this collection). I am betting it is not a substantial upgrade over the originals.
PvP Multiplayer would be nice, but if it came down to it I'd take just Campaign Co-op and the Hoard Mode.
@BacklogBrad Another point of consideration is if the 360 Gears games get delisted and the servers shut down after a Collection releases like Halo.
As long as it still has split-screen co-op campaign and horde mode, I'm perfectly fine with PvP getting yeeted out the window.
I would like split screen local multiplayer. I'm always looking for a good local co-op game on Game Pass and this would do very nicely.
For me it needs to have multiplayer, it's a large part of what the original games were for me and a unified multiplayer experience across the games with cross play would be awesome.
I enjoy all the Gears campaigns. But any Gears multiplayer I did not enjoy at all.
It would be a different story if a large number of players remained in the Gears 5 multiplayer.
But the reality is that there are not that many people left in Gears of War PvP.
I especially liked the multiplayer in Gears of War 3, but if it doesn't keep players for a long time, maybe it doesn't need to be implemented.
I could care less about a service that will one day be turned off. Even before then no one will be on for matchmaking.
People will want it as a day one feature again players but will just go back to other games anyways. Just make it single player and COUCH multiplayer.
i’d be beyond pissed

@xboxjapanfan just because the latest 2 games of the gears franchise were trash (& judgement) doesn’t mean that the trilogy didn’t have successful mp. the later games simply sucked.
Very, early Gears multiplayer was some of my best and most find gaming years
Honestly, I would be happy if it was just the Campaigns remastered. Save the MP for Gears E-Day. You don't wanna split up the community and cannibalize your own game.
@nomither6 ah the classic aggressive internet reply for no reason.
It’s just my opinion and don’t message me again pal.
It absolutely needs multiplayer, it was known for it. No reason it shouldn't have full PvP. Plus if the rumour about it going to PS5 is true it needs crossplay.
With PvP and Crossplay it's a massive fail for Xbox. 🤦♂️
At one point Gears was almost on par with Halo's popularity multiplayer wise. It's a key ingredient. This can't be true....
The bigger problem would be, if it really comes to PS5. 😒 PS5 doesn't deserve this game, simple as that.
I think Microsoft will do what Activision did with MW2 (2009) where the old multiplayer maps end up in the new game (2023's MW3 for CoD, E-Day for Gears).
I'm not bothered by it.
@x3King84 oops, i did it again
Needs multiplayer and horde. I don't care if it holds up the release these are key components of the games.
perfect. i will finally play these games if this is the case
I only ever really played Gears 1 since I was a teen when the series launched and had no money for the later entries. I did play A LOT of multiplayer. I feel if they don't really evolve the game much there's no reason to dive back in. It's not the technical marvel it once was. I still support people that love the series and have been die hards. Don't let me take away from your good experiences!
Multiplayer would break people who don't know how to wall-bounce, haha. Bring it baaaack...
