'Mecha BREAK' Dev Talks Xbox Console Exclusivity & Future Game Pass Plans

Earlier this month, we covered upcoming third-person shooter Mecha BREAK — specifically how Microsoft is helping bring the title to market — and a fresh interview with the game's developer has now dropped - bringing details of the MS partnership, a potential Xbox Game Pass launch and more.

Speaking with Windows Central, Amazing Seasun Games CEO Kris Kwok touched on developing for Xbox Series X|S and why it chose to partner with Microsoft, while dropping some other interesting tidbits of information as well. Talking about the partnership, Kwok stated that "they [Microsoft] are more aggressive than Sony" in this case - which has led to the game becoming an Xbox console launch exclusive.

Windows Central: "After a laugh, he clarified that he believed it was a mutually beneficial arrangement with Microsoft since mech games are already saturated in the Japanese market. As such, bringing a mech game exclusively to the Western market via Xbox was less risky."

Regarding Xbox Game Pass, Mecha BREAK is seemingly free-to-play at least in its base form, but it does sound like some sort of Game Pass partnership might happen as well. The interview notes that Kwok responded with an 'affirmative' when asked about being featured in Xbox Game Pass - so while this isn't confirmed yet, it sounds like XGP users could be in for some premium extras when Mecha BREAK launches.

Finally, the team also discussed developing for Xbox Series X and S, and how Microsoft's smaller, all-digital console threw up some additional difficulties during development. The studio explained that the console's limited RAM proved an issue, and that getting the game's huge maps running on the system was the "biggest technological hurdle" with Mecha BREAK coming to Xbox.

That last point there about Series S may explain why the game's recent public beta test failed to materialise on Xbox. As far as we know, the team had plans to make the beta available on Microsoft's console - but it's gone ahead as a PC-only affair for now. The team says it's "working hard" on the Xbox beta build, so here's hoping we see that pop up shortly.
