Back in 2024, Microsoft confirmed that the console versions of Avowed would aim for 30FPS - but it's looking like developer Obsidian has since managed to squeeze more out of Xbox Series X in the meantime. In a new rapid-fire interview with game director Carrie Patel, the lead dev confirms that Series X players can enjoy Avowed at "up to 60" frames per-second.
Patel spills the beans at roughly the four-minute mark in the above video; when asked about Avowed's Series X frame rate. This confirmation follows speculation in recent weeks about how the game is performing on Series X and S, although we're yet to hear about updated Xbox Series S targets at this time.

Another point that's still worth mentioning here is, we're not exactly sure what form this higher frame rate option will take. Patel clearly says "up to" 60FPS, so that would suggest 30FPS and 60FPS options going off what's been suggested so far. We'll just have to wait for the full launch to get all the nitty gritty details.
The good news is there's not much more patience required from you avid RPG players. Avowed hits early access in just a weeks' time on February 13th - before the full Xbox Game Pass launch follows on February 18th.
Are you happy to see 60FPS confirmation for Avowed? Talk to us about this interview tidbit down below.

Good for those who need it not really bothered either way myself!
Great news! That’s got the hype levels back up.
Just three hours ago, a user said that sadly it is 30fps has been stated in a dev interview. I'm very glad that it has a 60fps mode, because that will always be my priority. I'm also happy that it is not included after launch, although that would be better than nothing. That said, variable refresh rate is something that has been very useful on Series X; some games look smooth 60fps, even when they are not. I expect Series S (that also supports VRR) to have this mode included, at a lower resolution.
For those interested in Avowed it's a lovely and enlightening interview. Just 13 minutes long but a lot of rapid fire questions answered. Watch it here
@Banjo- They did previously state it was SPECIFICALLY 30fps and had been targeted as that from early on. However they did also say optimisation comes last. It seems they were able to optimise well enough to enable a 60fps mode.
Though "up to 60fps" is a little concerning. Hopefully it's MOSTLY 60fps and not all over the place, though as you say VRR helps smooth this for users with higher end TVs
Goes to show what can be done with some optimisation.
The feedback on 30fps must have focused dev minds.
@themightyant I know that. It was reported last summer and there is a link in this article. They said, "30fps is the minimum", not that "it was SPECIFICALLY 30fps", by the way.
It was going to get a 60fps update regardless. They always lied about the 30fps thing exsctly like the excuses that were talked about with Starfield.
But with the way Xbox consoles are today and slimy Phil blatantly not caring about the fans anymore, they don't care if series s owners will complain about there being no 60fps on day one alongside a series x mode. They are just done with it all.
In 3 months time, everything will be different again and what people think of Xbox.
This has me excited for a couple of reasons: 1) I personally prefer 60fps and 2) it at least seems like Microsoft is listening to what the consumers actually want, which is the option of a performance mode.
Looking forward to Avowed!
Glad they backtracked on the weird obsession with 30fps they had previously!
This is great news. Hopefully the performance mode performs smoothly, the Digital Foundry video will be interesting to watch.
@SodaPop6548 They always could have done it but series s caused complications with parity all that, like it did with most series s/x 1st party games this gen like Redfall and Starfield. They just don't care anymore. Not sure if that's a good thing.
Great, hope it runs well on the Series S as well! Indy is a great example. If not, I might have to wait for it to release on PS5 or try and get some playtime on my sons series X. Playing badly optimized games in first person isnt ideal.
This is great news, just hope the sacrifices are minimal and still running 1440p @60fps. Least the option is there for those that want the buttery smooth framerates.
I was bitterly disappointed with the initial 30 fps announcement but Avowed is definitely back on the menu.
I am probably going to buy it now rather than just gamepass it specifically due to having 60 fps. There really isn't a valid excuse not to offer a 60 fps option these days, at least on Series X
@themightyant
That’s saved the game for me, 60fps with VRR should be great.
No rubbish blurr and smearing when panning around or at least a lot better than 30fps.
@RiverGenie @OldGamer999 I feel you. It seems that they didn't want to commit to achieving 60fps early, hence the "30fps is the minimum" statement last summer. Look at some of the reactions and just imagine what the reactions would be if they had promised a 60fps mode but could not deliver... Even good news are bad news if they are related to Xbox 🤣.
@andrewsqual I don't think that is accurate. Lots of games launch without a 60fps option on Series S while there is still perf mode on Series X.
@andrewsqual why does every story that’s positive have to be made negative
@andrewsqual Not on PS5 eh, never mind.
Well it's 2025. I certainly hope it's 60 fps.
I have a burnt in plasma screen with a Series S - so I am not the target audience but optimistic for Avowed to brighten our dreary February….
Thank god!
I'm hyped for the game but was worried I'd struggle with 30fps, now I don't have to. Can't wait till we can try it!
Great news. Definitely playing this day 1. Kudos to MS and Obsidian. The game looks intriguing and I am glad its a smaller scale, not a bloated open world game.
@SodaPop6548 How many Xbox 1st party games?
@Rog-X It's not on Xbox series s or x yet either. You are literally still waiting nearly half a decade for it. I don't think you thought that through.
When it's announced for PS5, do you think it will be a 5 year wait all over again too?
Doesn't bother me in the slightest, 30fps or 60fps. I'm happy either way. This game looks absolutely amazing. Can't wait!
Great news, hopefully it stays within the VRR window to make a stable experience at 60.
@Banjo-
It’s great news it’s 60fps series x.
@Feffster
Remember the VRR window of a series x goes to or I think lower than 40fps up to 60fps
The PS5 range is 48fps to 60fps.
So the Series x VRR can work at lower fps rates down to 40fps.
@OldGamer999 Right, I was going to post that as well, that VRR has a wider range on Xbox and also Xbox has better bandwidth than PS5 and PS5 Pro.
To many games ....just finished Indiana Jones ..half way through sniper elite ..and also bought Kingdom come deliverance 2...which will be somewhat similar to avowed ....arghhhhh
@Banjo-
Yep and can used with HDMI 2.0 and 2.1
As with PS5 only works with hdmi 2.1
And don’t forget quick resume, my favourite series x feature. 🤣
@OldGamer999 I agree, Quick Resume is the best feature of the generation and then FPS Boost.
@Banjo-
FPS boost is ok but sometimes lowers the resolution like fc new dawn. But when it got a patch the other day a full 60fps and full 4K, looks and runs so well.
@OldGamer999 Yes, when it uses the Xbox One version instead of the Xbox One X version, especially those Xbox One versions that were low-res because of the resources reserved for Kinect. Many games were 900p, some 720p, like Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and Tekken 7. On the other hand, some 720p 30fps games became 4K 60fps, like Xbox 360 titles on Rare Replay.
@Banjo-
Really hope we keep quick resume for next Xbox.
Will be so annoyed if it gets left out, especially Xbox said was easy ish to implement and it’s just a small hard drive memory dump.
@Rog-X no horse in this race as have all the consoles, but I'd be amazed if this isn't announced for PS5 soon...
@Dimey They kinda confirmed it with the cheeky smile imo, it will be out soon. I think the only reason we are getting slight delays at the moment is they have a large back catalogue to port and and by spreading it out they generate regular revenue throughout the year. Its the smart move for now.
Woohoo!!!! This is great news indeed!
must admit, I'm more excited about outer worlds 2 than avowed right now, but looking forward to playing both...
Looking forward to Avowed. It might might be my most anticipated game alongside AC Shadows and expedition 33. I got Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and that had been a nice suprise.
I'd like to play this on launch day, but I don't want to subscribe to ultimate at the moment.
Wish I could just buy it on disc
@OldGamer999 I believe in 60Hz, the VRR window is 40 - 60. At 120Hz the VRR window 20 - 120.
60fps is great news for Series X owners!
Though, I feel like Microsoft should strongly recommend developers handle graphic options how Bethesda handled Fallout 4 and Starfield:
Have a Quality/Performance resolution option, and then have a 30/40*/60/120* frame rate cap option.
That way console titles are future-proofed and people have an option to mix and match - with perhaps a warning that mixing certain options may not work as desired (e.g. mixing Quality with 60fps).
Plus, I feel it’s a very “console-friendly” way to handle visual options.
In the Asian region, the English version will be available in February and the translated version in March. Therefore, the Premium Edition is dead.
@GamingFan4Lyf I think the VRR window goes to 30 rather than 20fps @ 120hz, and there's some kind of LFC or ALLM mode below that.
Either way, totally agree with you that it would be nice to see a load of console friendly options (although my poor normal 60hz TV will be crying out for a locked performance mode 🙏)
I haven’t read all the comments, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone complaining that it isn’t 120fps…
Nice to hear for frame rate sensitive people, but I'm still on the fence with the Xbox version of this game. No, other consoles haven't been confirmed but with MS's recent track record it's likely going multiplat.
