We've now got a whole bunch of first-party Xbox releases on the calendar for 2025 thanks to this week's Developer Direct, and don't forget about the initial one that's coming along in just a few weeks' time - Obsidian's Avowed!
This epic fantasy RPG launches for Xbox Series X, Series S, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming on February 18th via Xbox Game Pass, but you know the score at this point - there's also a way to get "early access" a few days ahead of time.
If you're an Xbox Game Pass member and you're intending to remain that way, the cheapest option for early access is via the "Avowed Premium Upgrade Addon", which costs £17.99 / $22.49 and includes access from February 13th along with a couple of Premium Skin Packs, a Digital Artbook and the Original Soundtrack.
Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. Please read our FTC Disclosure for more information.
The "Addon" version doesn't include the actual game itself (which is why it's only meant for Xbox Game Pass members), but the standard "Premium Edition" does - although it's a much more expensive £89.99 / $89.99.
It's been proven through the likes of Starfield and Forza Motorsport that the "upgrade" versions in particular have proven very popular to date, but the big difference this time is that there's not much in the way of premium DLC to go alongside the early access. When it comes to Avowed, you're mainly just paying for a chance to get hands-on early.
Should you spend your hard-earned money on it? We're not going to be the judge of that just yet. It might be worth waiting to see what the reviews are like, of course, but if you're really keen to get started with Avowed as soon as possible, by all means go for it. You could even use some left-over Microsoft Rewards points on it if you have any!

Where's the "I'm waiting for the 60 frames per second patch" voting option?
I pay enough to play it on gamepass besides I'm not that convinced it will be that good anyway but I hope I'm wrong!!
No. Because I believe this whole early access stuff is a scam. Whatever company that tries to do it.
Game is either ready or isn’t.
No I won't be paying for early access for any game especially one that's "day 1" on game pass. The slogan should be "play it day 6 with gamepass."
Made the mistake with Starfield. Never again. Hope the reviews come out earlier because of the early access though!
They’re doing the same 5 day ‘early access’ with South of Midnight too. I assume this is the new standard for all Xbox releases now. It’s a bit cheeky I think seeing as these are supposed to be Day 1 Game Pass launches.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Nothing wrong with Early Access, people who buy it can obviously afford it and the rest of us are happy to wait for Day One, plus if they find any bugs in that time quicker they can be fixed for the day one version.
@BacklogBrad Second this. This early access nonsense is a really bad trend.
Isn't limited to Xbox but it does make the whole "Play it Day One on Game Pass" a little bit of an exaggeration.
@Rog-X great so people can pay £30 to be beta testers. Excellent. Makes total sense that.
I’m not confident enough in the game that I would pay to play early. I only paid for early access for Starfield since I had covid and couldn’t go anywhere.
Nah, I'll just play it when it's on GP. I'm pretty deep in visions of mana, and now I want to try ninja gaiden 2, plus I just bought alone in the dark. So, I'm just hoping I'll even be able to play it on launch day and not busy with other stuff.
I won't, I'll just wait for GP launch, but I've massively high hopes in this game.
It’s a con I won’t pay it for any game.
Woah - are people really not that excited for this? It's Obsidian. They're one of MS' best imo.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner people can spend their own money as they wish, that makes total sense.
Usually it’s more than “just” early access - more like a discounted purchase of the future DLC with early access thrown in… it’s a nice gesture to any fan of the game. and if you don’t want to spend real money - use your reward points….
@RiverGenie please tell me where I’ve stated otherwise?
But if the logic of early access of 3-5 days is so bugs get found faster. Then there’s something wrong with that model.
Whatever company does it - it’s not an MS thing - it’s just preying on fomo
I think after Redfall and Starfield people are a lot more wary of the quality that Xbox has put out lately, @Kaloudz. Heck, even Halo Infinite didn't get it right on release (although I very much enjoyed the campaign). Thus, being massively excited for this game, which has not had the best of reveals as yet, is pretty difficult...
@Fiendish-Beaver I can get behind that, but, I am probably biased because the setting is right up my alley based on recent reveals. Like you, I enjoyed the Halo Infinite campaign too - but damn, seeing DOOM in those trailers really does make me wish id would have a pop.
I would only consider buying it as part of a premium edition with campaign DLC included. I love Obsidian's games and that digital art book sounds nice, but it's too steep a price just for that and to play a few days earlier. I can wait 😁.
Gamepass day six
I’ve bought prior upgrades because they included story DLC that I would have bought anyway. But with none in this upgrade, I’m going to pass this time.
Definitely excited for it. All of the previews I’ve read have been very positive so can’t wait to play next month !!!
Will be interesting to see how this one reviews.
And if we get 60fps on series x, terrible omission.
In general, I have NO issues with the game being available a few days 'earlier' for those that are willing to pay a bit more - or would likely buy a 'Premium' edition. Its just a 'bonus' the Publisher/Dev can give to try and encourage more 'pre-orders'. Its not as if they are likely to make 'sweeping' changes in the 3-5days. It would likely be a more 'up to date' version of the Game Code they had to supply to their manufacturers of the 'Physical' edition that not only had to manufacture the discs, but distribute across the world in time to be 'sold' on Day 1.
After 'Day 1', that 'bonus' is completely worthless to offer or even consider, where as DLC, Cosmetics, Artbooks, Soundtracks etc have 'value'. You can't go back in time to make use of the 3-5 days 'early' access - so its a 'bonus/token' gesture to encourage 'pre-orders' and give something that costs 'nothing' to make it available a few days earlier, but for fans, enthusiasts etc, a 'chance' to play a bit sooner.
If its not a Game or 'Bonus' you are interested in, its purely optional - no different from deciding to buy a 'Standard' edition or the 'Premium' edition with Cosmetics, Steel Books, maybe some DLC/Season Pass etc. A few days early access is is just part of that 'premium' package.
Game Pass doesn't 'entitle' anyone to the 'optional' extras, you get access to the Standard edition. It was the same with CoD - they had a 'Vault Edition' and Standard Edition. You got the first Season Pass with the Vault Edition (and Cosmetics) but as you are 'entitled' to the Standard edition with Game Pass, they 'offered' a Vault Edition upgrade - similar to Starfield. That Cost exactly the same as the 'price' difference between the Standard and Premium content. Its not more, its no different from ANY other Publisher offering 'incentives' to 'pre-order' (CoD and other Online based games have often had 'exclusive' Beta testing months before scheduled release to those who pre-ordered), Ubisoft have released games for years with 'Premium' editions offering DLC, Cosmetics, bonuses for pre-ordering.
So many Games would have 'extra' stuff - whether its Posters, Postcards, Pin Badges or other 'physical' items if you 'pre-ordered' from certain Stores - like Game. Digital can't really 'offer' the same goods to encourage pre-ordering, hence 'digital' based Artbooks, Soundtracks and 'early access' bonuses.
As I said, this is purely to encourage you to 'Pre-order' and is purely 'optional'. Its just a 'few' days early - not a 'beta' test and likely more 'up to date' code than you'd get on Disc - if the shop sold their Stock a few days 'earlier' than they were allowed to do.
It seems some want to whinge and make mountains out of nothing!
@OldGamer999
And if we get 60fps on series x, terrible omission
I think we will before too long (seeing how Starfield got it after launch too) . It's just a shame that is not there at launch.
Nope, i paid for 3 years of gamepass day one releases not day 6 or whatever it is this time...extremely scummy move twisting the meaning of early access to get around their promise of "Play new games the same day they release with Xbox Game Pass."
I really like Obsidian (Alpha Protocol, New Vegas and The Outer Worlds in particular) but I’m not a huge fantasy fan so I’m defo going to wait for the full launch. I do believe this game is going to be big for the fans of the genre.
No.
And so this comment is long enough for Pure Xbox to let me post it:
No.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner As I said if they want to do that because they have the money then why not, it's their money to spend how they choose.
@Isolte Bigger picture pft. If someone wants to spend money they earned on something that makes them happy & brings them some fun then I am not going to belittle their choice because its their choice to make.
No one is forcing this purchase on you and you can ignore it if its not your thing.
(For the record & full disclosure I am not buying it for Avowed as i doubt i will even play the game. I have purchased early access for Forza Horizon 5, Diablo 4 & Path of Exile 2 which for me were totally worth it.)
Generally, I dont care about waiting these extra days.
People call it day 4 on GP like its a problem lol.
Usually, If deluxe version includes future expansions I might buy it. If its only cosmetics than I dont care
@Sol4ris
Yeah thought at the developer direct the other day we have got a nice little 60fps announcement. The thing is we shouldn’t have to wait for it.
They should release like Indy did, spot on.
@somnambulance i was able to refund my upgrade for starfield lol
I'll wait for the gamepass release.
I've got more than enough to play until then.
Think this will be the best year for gamepass since the release of the series consoles.
I'm happy to wait and play it day 6 on Gamepass
@Millionski nobody really thinks it’s a ‘problem’.
It’s the fact it’s advertised as day 1 gamepass! When in reality it’s day 3-5.
@Millionski How’d you manage to do that? I wish I would’ve known how! There’s few games that I’ve been so meh about for the entire time I’ve played it as Starfield. I think I called it the definitive 6/10 experience at one point.
@somnambulance MS has refund system. Since i played during early access time it worked even if I logged more hours. Maybe got lucky.
I was able to refund bunch of games with 3-5hrs playtime.
Usually I think playtime should be less than 2 hours.
Never hurts to try lol
Play day 6 with Game Pass doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
I wouldn't mind as much but SOMEHOW they are allowed to market "available on day one with Game Pass", which they did as recently as yesterday. It's false advertising and should be illegal.
Nah, I'm good. Game pass launch good enough for me.
Imagine paying for being a beta tester. So, no thanks. I’ll wait until this impatient crowd test this game for me.
@OldGamer999 I wish Indy was ready when it was released. Unfortunately, it still isn't ready after 2 patches. It's unplayable and broken for many gamers with many different progress halting bugs. I just started it last week and got to the end of the Vatican only to encounter a known game ending bug. The left, light dragon claw from the fountain puzzle wouldn't allow me to pick it up. I deleted all local saves and restarted from cloud saves to no avail. My only option was to start over from the beginning. I chose to delete the game. After reading Reddit, there are MANY known game breaking bugs that still haven't been patched. You were one of the lucky gamers.
@Rog-X I too like to pay to play buggy things sooner.
Oh, no, wait I don’t.
@Rog-X
3 years of gold then converted it for the 1pence offer to Ultimate, also had 2 extra years of Ultimate included in the price of my Internet contracts so still have 2 years left
All of which was sold to me as play day one, I'm a man of honour and dishonesty in others does not sit well with me
Being a long time PC Gamer as well i am fully aware of what early access actually means and this isn't it
Oh boy, a $15 fee to play something on a streaming service a few days early! You could buy a whole game for that and just play it until Avowed drops.
This is scummy.
I'm really looking forward to the game, and it looks right up my street, so yes I will grab the premium edition. I can see why you would wait for the standard release day though if you are unsure, busy or just curious. I normally get Ubisoft games I want "day one" rather than early access (although looks like they are stopping that now). It's fine to wait for something and it's also fine to get it early if the option is there and you choose to do so, free will and all. The market is there for it presently.
Will definitely check it out with Game Pass Ultimate when it get released. Then I'll decide if I'll play it though with Ultimate, not bother, or buy the game when it's very cheap.
Doom will be an interesting one. That one has two days ‘early access’. How many people will be able to resist the FOMO for that one? I suspect that’ll break a lot of people who otherwise choose to wait for Avowed and South of Midnight.
The best deal in gaming: play it day 6 with Game Pass.
People shouldn’t support paying more money for literally nothing. There are plenty of games to play without paying money to play something earlier. Spend that money on supporting a good game and wait for the release date.
That said, definitely looking forward to avowed.
@Blastfemur the last third of the game really feels broken and unfinished too. I had no bad problems, but the first 2/3 was way better than the last 1/3.
I've been looking forward to this, but I'll wait until day 6 on gamepass. I don't want to encourage this early access nonsense any more than I want to encourage loot boxes and microtransactions.
I'll probably just wait till it's on deep discount given its absurdly high price at launch.
It also only being a digital release simply strengthens that resolve even more.
But on the other hand, if it's going to be on Game Pass I may aswell try it out.
Not a chance. I'll never pay extra to play a finished game a couple days early. The game is ready to play then release it that day simple as that.
Why should players be expected to pay extra because you pushed back the release by a week?
Day 6 again.
The People who continually defend this scummy practise often point to a dlc pack to try and defend it. It's quite clear from this release that has nothing to do with it. Game Pass does not get day 1 and any claims to the contrary are straight up lying.
Proper early access is how BG3 did it, £30 for access to Act 1 for over a year as they developed the game and added new stuff. You received a 50% discount for testing the game early.
This modern practise of early access is the scummiest thing to come out this generation. 3-5 days is not early access, its not for bug testing, server loads or for anything other than grifting people due to FOMO.
@Ricky-Spanish I treat each one of these on an individual basis. Starfield and Indy I would have waited but I had a free weekend in that early release window so it was ideal! But then with this my backlog is such I cant justify it.
@elpardo1984 Exactly if you want to buy it and get early access and it's value to you then buy it!
It's not as offensive as some people on here make out if it's like that for the new GTA I'd buy it same for a new Elden Ring ina heartbeat!!
As a rule I try and avoid playing games until a couple of weeks after release at least. More if it's a really bad launch which let's be fair is more often than not these days. So no! Absolutely not. I won't be paying more to be a beta tester.
I don't like to pay Full price AND do the job of beta Testers ...
I loved when vidéo games were finished DAY 1...
@Ricky-Spanish yeah people get a bit weird about it. Especially when it often comes with future DLC at a reduced price, if you like it you're probably going to play that too!
@Isolte You get the DLC, pre-order bonuses, artbooks, soundtrack, and additional items. All of which are more tangible than 3-5 access prior to the street date. If anyone wants to focus sole on when the game becomes active, that is on them. We all can buy the DLC early and play early or simply wait a few/several days.
@Isolte Yes, the media is digital. Could be if you buy the physical version, it is different. I'm not sure. The Starfield digital artbook was actually pretty large.
The DLC (missions, story, car packs), cosmetics/weapons, and early access are what mainly attracts me. I don't pay for Game Pass and even if I did, the price ($15-30 discounted) of these upgrades is fairly negligible.
