We've been waiting and waiting on Black Myth: Wukong to launch for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S ever since it was delayed indefinitely back in June, and as we arrive in 2025, there's still no date for its release as of yet.
The reason it's become a saga is because nobody's really addressed it so far (until now) - we've heard rumours that it's a Series S problem, and other rumours that PlayStation paid for timed exclusivity. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer was asked about it recently, and simply declined to comment on the game's Xbox status.
So, what's the situation? According to a translated New Year's post from the Game Science CEO Yocar-Feng Ji on Weibo, the Xbox version suffered optimisation issues due to the "10GB of shared memory" that's used by the Series S. Because of that, he says it's really hard to get the game running without multiple years of optimisation experience.
Here's a machine-translated version of the social media message courtesy of IGN:
Yocar-Feng Ji on Weibo: “The only thing missing is the Xbox, which somehow feels a bit wrong, but that 10GB of shared memory — without years of optimisation experience — is really hard to make work.”
The CEO didn't directly reference the timed PlayStation exclusive rumours that were doing the rounds last year, so we don't ultimately know whether a deal was created as a result of these optimisation issues. According to some reports, Xbox has been of the belief that a timed deal is in place, and bizarrely, a statement from Microsoft mentioned back in September that the delay "is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us".
Microsoft representative in September 2024: "As we have said before, we’re excited for the launch of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We'd prefer not to comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us."
Confused? Yeah, we are too. Whatever the case may be, we're just hoping we'll get Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as soon as possible, as the game was actually rated for those platforms just a few months ago.
That should hopefully mean we're not too far away, but if problems persist with Xbox Series S, it might mean that Microsoft needs to work out a Baldur's Gate 3-type scenario - some kind of exception that can get it over the finish line!

It isn't confusing at all.
Microsoft lied. Simple as that
Given that it was developed with PC as the lead platform the memory pool in the S is more plausible than the Sony money hatting. I mean, even on the ps5 the performance looks a bit rough. Oh well, it'll come when it comes.
So this site still believe Sony got timed exclusive without Sony showing anything like that.
We all know Sony would show timed exclusive if so was.
@Neverwild We don't "believe" anything. We're just presenting all the angles of the story to make for a more interesting read.
Personally though (with no inside information whatsoever) I think it's probably a bit of both - the Series S caused issues for the game, which meant they did some kind of deal with PlayStation while they tried to figure out the Xbox side of things.
That's my educated guess based on what I've read over the past six months... but I could be way off!
@FraserG so still trying to lie then.
Instead of trying to blame Sony demand better from Xbox.
@Neverwild There's nothing in this story that blames Sony whatsoever. Nobody is being blamed - it's purposely impartial.
Usually Sony markets the hell out of their timed exclusives but this was definitely not marketed like something like Ronin. After seeing how the PS5 version strained with how the game ran and given the comments from the CEO of Games Science, I definitely could see why it would be hard to get a game to run as well as was needed on hardware that may not be up to the task!
Honestly don't care at this point what the issue is. It's only fuel to folks who think console wars are important and base their self worth on their choice being the "best."
If we get Wukong great & everyone can rejoice. If not, we'll it's not the first or last game we won't see on the platform but we are not short of other gaming options that are also fun to play (you know the reason the majority of folks play games for.)
It's just a game it's not important.
(This same sentiment applies to any game they ain't that important that it's worth getting any sort of angst or anger over because you can't play it & someone else can.)

Yeah. Love my series S but we all know its limitations, so I can understand they are having some trouble with the port. Shouldnt be impossible though.
@FraserG
"No one is being blamed"
"Personally though (with no inside information whatsoever) I think it's probably a bit of both - the Series S caused issues for the game, which meant they did some kind of deal with PlayStation while they tried to figure out the Xbox side of things."
Amazing stuff
@TeiGekiLord Once again, there's no blame in there. If people want to make things up to fit their narrative, that's their choice.
Also, I clearly differentiated the second part of my comment by saying it was my "personal" opinion.
@FraserG
So as a journalist, you are still putting blame on Sony and then saying "well it's my views".
The facts were given, this was nothing and still is nothing to do with Sony.
Makes no sense to me that Sony would have paid for exclusivity. The game clearly is struggling to run on Series S and will take years to optimise (as per the CEO comments). Why would Sony then offer to pay money to stop a release that can't be released within a timed period? Whoever pays for exclusivity at that point should be sacked!
@TeiGekiLord Again, I didn't put any blame on Sony for anything.
Beyond that, am I not allowed a viewpoint just because of the job that I'm doing here? I can't even use the comments section to share what I think of something personally?
From the very beginning the devs said they needed to optimize the game for Xbox. Unsurprisingly their story is the same as it was then….
@FraserG
Dude you're literally still saying you believe there's a deal with Sony despite the devs straight up confirming the reason for the issues.
I don't blame Microsoft or Nintendo when Sony's issues prevent them from getting games lol.
Sony did nothing, this was down to the Series S and the developers not having enough experience.
Damn, the $ony fanboys don't have anything better to do this early in the year? 😂

@TeiGekiLord You're saying I'm "blaming" Sony though, and although it might come across that way, I promise you I'm not! I love PlayStation (and Nintendo) 🤷♂️
My personal thoughts are only based on reports that came out last year from the likes of IGN (as well as Microsoft's statement) suggesting that a deal was put in place.
I don't doubt that Game Science has struggled with the Xbox Series S version as well. Definitely not suggesting they're lying at all. As I say, no blame being placed on anyone here.

With you unpleasant comments on PushSquare about this website and it's users and in particular regarding this article you're close to brigading.
Also, you're being offensive.
@FraserG
Fair enough, I'm sorry for being less than sure to be honest. The vibe on PureXbox is so anti-Sony every article that it feels like the whole site is just one big site to say everything wrong with Xbox is down to Sony or their fans.
I'm used to people here immediately calling me a Pony because I'm not exactly kind towards the brand cause I feel that the leadership is a genuine joke and wish the console could be unshackled from them.
@PSDeckSwitchOwner
I'm not a fanboy and haven't lied about anything. Same with the article.

@TeiGekiLord I'm sorry you feel that way! It's often difficult when it comes to PlayStation-related articles and we don't always relish writing about them to be honest! We always try our best though.

Heh. This was reported on Push Square just before I went to bed, and I mentioned that the Pure XBox comments when it got reported here should be interesting.
Just woke up and reading all these now. I love being right. munches popcorn
That said, it’s too bad the series S continues to be a millstone around dev’s necks, having to release for S and X simultaneously.
Oh so it seems as I called it at the beginning. The Series S has held back another game coming to Xbox.
The series S isn’t the actual problem, Microsoft’s policy of needing to release on both consoles simultaneously is.
Well, looks like the New Year kicked of in a wonderful and harmonious way 😅....
I’m no game developer and I therefore should not make this comment.
But how in the world is it possible that 10GB of RAM is too few to optimize your game.
@Friendly Series X and PS5 have 16.
6 GB difference is…not a small amount.
Hopefully the game comes to Xbox but either way I'm not really bothered
Wow these comments sound fun I imagine!
End of the day the developers have said from day 1 that it was an issue with optimisation with the S. they haven’t hidden this fact. Ever.
It’s their first game, so obviously they have had issues and that’s fine. It happens. First games often have issues. They didn’t give a BS excuse around it.
It doesn’t even run perfect on ps5/pc. So imagine how it would be on the S!
Phil’s comment was never helpful - but he wasn’t going to come out and say it was a hardware problem.
It will make it to Xbox
@Friendly
Especially when we have games like FH5, Stalker 2 or Indiana Jones running just fine (within the expected limitations of the Series S!). Anyway as expected this has triggered certain individuals with a vengeance, judging by the amount of removed comments😄.
the parity with series s and x has been a problem maybe xbox should drop it..
@Sol4ris to be fair two of those mentioned are first party, and the other has made games previously (it also released a mess) and didn’t focus on ps5 too!
@FraserG you're still pushing the rumour that's been outright denied. There is no deal for PlayStation, there has never been evidence of any deal, and the only rumour that was there has been outright disproven. This is poor journalism to continue implying anything without evidence.
Welp I was hoping the devs would figure this out. I will still wait a year after release because this has been the double dip gen and I hate it but will get on PS5 otherwise.
@Steel76 agree that this one was always going to be a problem initially, but the parity thing is fine. It'd be a PR nightmare to drop it for certain titles only.
Not entirely sure how it'll pan out but increased use of FSR2/3 and maybe even 4 (if it comes out and isn't totally hardware based) should keep the S relevant for a few years even within the memory constraints. I also totally get if a Dev just doesn't want to spend the time on optimisation.
End of the day it's only been a small handful of games affected really, and anyway, makes the comments section fun to read!
@DarkTron Respectfully, I disagree. The rumour is mentioned, but not pushed as fact, and Microsoft's statement also deserves a mention because of its seemingly contradictory nature.
The article doesn't (or at least, isn't intended to) imply either way whether a deal is in place or not, because ultimately none of us know that information.
@FraserG if it wasn’t an optimisation issue, why wouldn’t Microsoft refute these claims?
Because it has potential to be damaging and why would they allow a developer to basically bad mouth the console in public? Yet still want the game on the platform (besides obviously money).
As I said above I think it will come to Xbox, probably within first half of year. It’s just again a mess when it comes to messaging from MS.
@Friendly the ram is split into two pools, and I believe that 2GB is OS reserved. Too low VRAM kills games all the time. Seeing as the devs aren’t specialists at optimizing for series s (which will just get the game out the door if they are mind you no telling what it will look like) and they have a low pool to start and depending the load on the ram pool due to how the game is built (I haven’t played it yet) it does make sense. Different example but I had texture mods for skyrim kill a gpu that ran the vanilla game on ultra. But trying to load that many cells in 4k nuked my card. Second I switch to a card with higher vram, game ran like butter. All mods on. Not enough vRAM can absolutely kill a game and a shared pool is even worse. It’s probably not worth the money for the devs to get an xbox specialist dev to strip and retool the game to get it series s ready.
Sorry I still stand by my first comment that was deleted.
Anyway I don't think it's entirely down to the Series S, I think Sony has also pushed to keep the game off Xbox in subtle ways.
Game runs like crap anyway, really needs a beefy PC to run well. Could certainly do with a LOT more optimisation.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner They did refute the claims though, that's why it's such a confusing situation:
"we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us"
As you say, this whole thing has just been a mess. When it happened with Baldur's Gate 3, at least we were getting proper communication about what was happening.
What probably happened is that Game Science had problems with Xbox development and Sony gave them a little incentive to focus on getting the game out "on time" on PS5 and PC rather than continue to delay the game to optimize for Xbox - probably in the form of elevated technical support from Sony.
But I don't think there was a mass market deal or exclusivity clause or anything like that. Sony probably simply helped them get the game released on time at the expense of putting Xbox development on hold until after release.
It’s yet another Microsoft lie and people still trying to spin it as Sony’s fault somehow.
The facts are that Microsoft outright doesn’t care about their platform and bringing third-party games to it, plus they’re a bunch of double-faced liars as they implied the game wasn’t coming due to an agreement with Sony and saying specifically “it isn’t because of the platform limitations” and it turned out to be exactly Series S limitations, but for me the worst thing is Xbox’ attempts to keep lying to their core audience, which is all they’ve done last year and this entire generation.
Even the series x has a split RAM pool at two different speeds , as the PS5 RAM Is all one pool at the same speed.
I think next gen Xbox will make it simple and easier to optimise on to help developers.
However the series x gives one more extra GB to developers more than the PS5 overall.
One RAM pool seems such a simple answer to me.
This also shows with Xbox moving Halo to Unreal 5, developer talent and a common game engine.
So one more confirmation that Microsoft has been lying, repeatedly.
I'm tired boss.
@GamingFan4Lyf @FraserG Stop doing mental gymnastics and just cope with the fact Microsoft lied and there never was an exclusivity agreement or “incentive” with Sony, I don’t know why it’s so hard to accept that, it’s not the first (nor the last) lie MS has told us.
Tired the game on PS5 it’s a good game if you like it mainly linear and souls like.
Basically lots of small enemies easy to do, then dam stupid hard boss battles.
I don’t think it has sold that great on PS5
More in China I think on PC is the big sales.
@TeiGekiLord where are you seeing blame in that? You're just being antagonistic at this point.
I remember reading an article where DF broke down the specs over the game running on XSS. After that article that's when game science spoke of a potential exclusively deal with Sony. Next it came out that Sony was paying companies to release on their platform over MS. Stellar Blade being one, and Cremson Desert being the latest, but was turned down. Sony was also the company that had people trying to stop the Acti/Bliz acquisition. Remember they had to admit that CoD was the highest selling game on their platform, not an exclusive.
Make this make since to me, 60 million Ps5s out here, yet not one game has ever hit at least 20 million sold. Hmmmmmmm, you sale and ship 60 million at the same time. Remember Silent Hill 2 sold over a million between PC and Ps5, I'm just saying.
@S1ayeR74
Nah, nothing to do with Sony but keep deluding yourself I guess.
@armondo36
Bro responding to a post after both users made peace trying to start drama lol.
Silent 4 half a year then said that?
I don't buy it.
If hardware is true reason why ask ms 4 help?
Like BG3 and Italy soul like whatever it's name's dev.
Ms give help ASOP and solved.
Why dev try to solve it by himself if what he said is true.
If you read both statements CAREFULLY both can be true. Black Myth director said it was due to the Series S memory limitation, but Microsoft only said it "is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us". If it wasn't raised to them as the issue then that can be true too.
However what was always dodgy about this was Microsoft unsubtly suggesting this was a paid deal despite Game Science denying that. That wasn't OK and was what really kicked the hornets nest and led to a lot of misinformation.

@IOI I don't think Microsoft ever said there was. Just said it couldn't comment on whatever deals Game Science had with "other platform holders" - which boiled down to meeting the release date Game Science wanted to meet.
Social Media took that narrative as Microsoft hinting at some kind of exclusivity deal with Sony - which there wasn't. I think that it was just that Game Science and Sony came to a deal for the console version to get the game out as intended rather than choose to delay on the platform due to Xbox optimization issues - potentially with some elevated technical support from Sony to make it happen.
Microsoft can't comment on that because it's none of Microsoft's business what Game Science and Sony/Valve/Epic decided with regards to releasing the game.
I mean, ultimately, the developer tells the platform holder when it will release a game. That's a "deal" it makes. And even if Sony didn't provide any incentive for the console version and Game Science simply chose to focus on PS5 and PC to meet it's intended release date, that is still a "deal" it made to platform holders regarding meeting the intended release date.
If you want to feel like Microsoft lied and is being deceptive, then that's your narrative.
It's not up to one business to comment on what other businesses decide to do with other businesses.
I don't "cope" with anything.
I don't even have an Xbox anymore - what Microsoft does or doesn't do with the consoles isn't my problem. I just don't run on this whole "Evil Empire" narrative.
All Microsoft can do is talk about Xbox business regarding this game - which, is basically accepting a delay and providing support where necessary to get the game out if possible.
I got this free for Steam when I got my gaming PC as it had a qualifying Nvidia card. It's decent. I lost interest after a while due to the "Boss Rush" nature of it.
In my opinion, it's more of a technical showcase than anything ground-breaking in the gameplay department.
I hope it does see light of day on Xbox in the near future, though. There is definitely an audience for this kind of game - even if it didn't hold my interest enough to finish it.
There are two types of people in this world; those who can put two and two together and knew from the beginning this was why it wasn’t on Xbox, and die hard angst ridden fanboys seething that once again they miss out, and therefore adorn their misshapen heads with tinfoil hats and start cranking out conspiratorial propaganda and posting it on social media in an attempt to whip up the already frenzied masses. Good to see those incompetent fools like Jez on their knees.
This is what I have been saying all along, @GamingFan4Lyf & @FraserG; I do not believe that there was an exclusivity deal. What I do believe is that Game Science simply were incapable of getting the game to run to a satisfactory standard on the S. At that same time, Sony saw that the version of the game that the PS5 was to receive was in a somewhat rough state and so offered their own money, and technical knowhow, to get the game running better on the PS5. What likely then happened was that Game Science put the Xbox version on the backburner whilst they then concentrated on the PS5 version. This meant that the game released on the PS5 in a timely manner, and thus in its own way created a period of exclusivity for Sony. Not because they had signed a deal that would allow for timed-exclusivity, but because Game Science was too busy with the PS5 and PC versions to get on with the issue of solving the S problem.
Now, did Sony know that by aiding Game Science to get the game out on the PlayStation would in effect create a period of exclusivity, without necessitating striking a timed-exclusive deal? Probably, but then that's business, just as striking such deals is. Sony is in the business of doing what is best for them, and quite right too.
So, all along, the two arguments over this game can be both be right; there was no exclusivity deal and yet there was a de facto period of exclusivity created by Sony assisting Game Science, and Microsoft can be right (and telling the truth) when they say that deals were in affect (that deal being for Sony to aide Game Science to get the PS5 version out first)...
🤣 the state of some of you in these comments. Seriously, just relax and go and play some games. Absolutely staggering how worked up some people can get with strangers on the internet who disagree with them over something that doesn't matter.
@TeiGekiLord dude if you don't like this site and its views on playstation(even though the site is called pureXBOX) don't read anything on this site.
@TeiGekiLord I am not deluded at all. I remember the fact that the Series S runs Stalker 2, a UE5 game. Yet it can't run Wukong? Sorry I don't believe that. I think it's more lack of skill and coding ability with the team behind the game plus Sonys money helping the game being prioritised for PS5 and PC first. Sony offered its help and money to bring the game to PS5, and it barely runs, so I don't believe they have the skills to bring the game to Xbox in a quick timescale. And the media and fans have let rip with the accusations and agendas since.
(Is this post alright mods or will you delete it too?)
Still believing that Sony was money hatting this game when there was was literally no incentive for them to do so, seems quite bizarre to me, and the editor of this site perpetuating that belief in a public forum is very disappointing to those of us that come here for balanced Xbox centric news.
It's also disappointing to learn that newer Devs may struggle to launch on this platform because of the parity requirement for series S, though it has become increasingly obvious over time. MS should have a tech hit team that can go and help such Devs with such situations...
I still hope the title arrives on Xbox soon, I think it's a great game and I'm sure many Xbox players would too. I will also hope that some sanity prevails whilst discussing such rumours, but I might as well wish for world peace too, neither are likely 🙄
Not that fussed about the game personally...not in a rush to try it on playstation...and enough time has passed that I probably won't play it .. so not bothered if it comes to Xbox personally...don't even know if I'd play it if came to ps plus or gamepass now ...would have to be a pretty dry gaming period for me to jump in
@dskatter @Ryu_Niiyama thanks for the explanations, honestly helpful!
Still, I’m blabbered by the fact that these game developers developed a game that is in no way a little scalable in this day and age. More than half of all current Steam users has less than 10 GB vRAM. https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam.
@Friendly NP. Honestly and this is my wild arse hot take opinion but devs have been trying to throw hardware at poor optimization for a while now. Instead of using tricks or lighter engines to make their game work or a different art style and scale it properly.
While not perfect that is why I respect Nintendo internally deved games (key word is internal though they have some good partners). BOTW/TOTK would have been a straight up powerpoint presentation if Nintendo hadn’t done a lot of tricks under the hood (and both games still aren’t perfect) but a lot of these devs, especially the ones used to working on PC, are not adjusting well. Even now devs are hyping up the ps5 pro because they want consumers to pay for more expensive hardware because they couldn’t get their games out in a solid state on base hardware. If you can’t get your engine to run well day one on base (series s in xbox’s case) console hw I am at the point that I wish devs would release on PC and then just wait a year or two until they figure out console. Or delay the games altogether. Because all they are doing is pushing for price inflation by complaining to hw manufacturers that they need beefier hardware. They need to scale back match both base hw specs and their skillset as devs.
I am defo going back to PC after this gen though. It’s not the console manufacturers fault imo but this is getting silly.
I really don't get the fuss this causes. Everyone reads into everything to much.
Phil didn't lie. He was asked to comment on an alleged/rumoured deal. He said we can't comment on other people's deals. He isn't saying there is one. It's just a stock business response. Simple as that.
MS requires titles release simultaneously on X and S. The developer can't get it running on the S. Game doesn't come out. Simple as that.
Hasn't been delayed for reasons raised to us. The developer hasn't raised them.
Sometimes the answers for things are the simplest explanations. Folks just dig into stuff to much and it all gets lost in the mud.
The developers have found a lot of 'excuses' and no solutions.
Capcom sat down with Microsoft when people asked why the MvC Collection wasn't coming to XBOX, and went 'Give us a bit longer, Microsoft have given us a solution'.
The developers of Black Myth Wukong claim that there's no solution, that the Microsoft version isn't happening since, this time, the Series S has too small a RAM pool. Yet somehow every game that's come out so far has found a way to optimize the game to run on everything.
I see that they need to optimize their game better in general if everything isn't running it right, and blaming the Series S is more trying to save face.
@beltmenot
Where did I say "I don't like this site"?
It’s all Sony’s fault.
LOL. Come at me !
@PsBoxSwitchOwner how many times do you want to make an account to troll.
No one has "been waiting" for this game. No one cares. Lol. There is plenty more to play on the Series X.
@Weebleman Whilst i agree that Phil did not technically lie, there is no denying that he chose his words to purposefully throw a grenade out there and cast doubt on the whole situation. Likely because it was happening a few times in close successsion, and so its right that people are now calling him out for it.
@ValentineMeikin Their has been lots of similar stories of smaller devs all saying MS simply doesn't give them the same level of support as they would the bigger names like Capcom. Recently a dev publicly shamed them just to get a response faster.
@Ilyn I'm not sure what they are calling him out on though. What he said is literally the facts of the matter, he can't comment on other company's deals, regardless of a deal being, or not being, in place. There really is nothing more to it.
@Sol4ris fully agreed
@ryu_niiyama Yes, indeed. I also applaud Nintendo’s philosophy. They are masters at crafting intense games that still look amazing with just bitesized specced hardware (Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion, Metroid Prime, Xenoblade chronicles 3). Switch only has 4 GB Ram total. Can’t wait for a little more beefier Nintendo console though. Especially to get rid of the 3d party discussion all the time: ‘but how does it run.’
But yeah, Iwata predicted the current better hardware / lesser software cycle in 2002, hope his spirit will linger on next console generation: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/iwata-predicted-the-current-state-of-xbox-and-playstation%E2%80%A6.1671003/
@Weebleman The point is by adding in "other companies" he made it a loaded statement and that was intentional. He could easily have just said "no comment" with further expanding on it to make it sound exactly like a hidden message.
@Ilyn but he was asked a question specifically about another company.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@ZAHMED I have one account. I don’t know what you mean?
@FraserG If Sony had a deal with the devs then the PS5 version wouldn't be so bad and the Pro update wouldn't be so lackluster. The lack of marketing from Sony also kills the timed deal idea as well.
@Weebleman Phil knew exactly what he was saying by mentioning the word "deals", did he lie? Not exactly but knew the drama his statement would cause.
Removed - flaming/arguing; user is banned
@DennisReynolds that all depends on the question asked. Let's also not forget that the quote was originally given by a MS spokesperson in response to a question from Windows Central. It wasn't directly from Phil.
If they said 'can you comment on the deal Sony have...' then the response that they can't comment on deals is simply a response to the question posed. Problem being nobody prints the question, they just take the answer and run to their own conclusions.
For clarity, I'm not fan of phil spencer, or any of these company execs, but this is just folks making mountains of mole hills.
Edit: For reference, here's the original article where they gave the quote. https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/report-black-myth-wukong-may-have-a-secret-exclusivity-deal-with-playstation-preventing-an-xbox-release
Some of y’all aren’t familiar with Sony’s past and how they do business if you think this isn’t a back room deal they would do and then dance around the marketing of said deal AS PART OF THE DEAL The alternative is the developer admitting to being bad at their jobs, when it’s obvious much more graphically impressive games scale to the Series S.
@OldGamer999 While most of the sales were on PC. Sony basically alluded to the sales of a certain Chinese game (BMW) bumping up their profits for the last quarter. It also lead to PS5s getting sold out in China, Taiwan and HK. So that is a win for them.
@Ryu_Niiyama I think we are at the point where outside of the main console manufacturers who all have very strong internal teams releasing high quality and strong performance games (look at Spider-Man 2/HFW, Hellblade/Indiana and TOTK) the rest of the industry is struggling under TOO MUCH PC optimisation.
High end gamers want Path tracing, 500fps blah blah whistles, while most have potato PCs that need to also be included and this gap is widening more and more (especially with Steam Deck thrown in the middle now). Nvidia wants high end bells and whistles too because it sells their Graphics cards and they get the devs get free publicity with DF going gaa gaa over every micro-pixel.
@DannZan
Yes yes, Sony is evil for operating like the industry has since the beginning.
@DannZan Every game Sony published last year got tons of marketing, Rebirth even got tons of Sony marketing despite SE publishing it. Sony market the games they put money into because of course they would and they wouldn't have IGN China reveal the first PS5 footage of it a day before release. As the Devs have confirmed the issue is the Series S, the PS5 version struggles and has to fake 60fps on it even on the Pro so why do you think the SS version should be fine when the most powerful console ever has issues with it?
I hope that MS learn from this and they don't split the install base again.
The forced parity between series X and S is a double edged sword. If the devs say they have issue with the memory pool then yeah. Well done Microsoft. If they lifted the forced parity no doubt we'd have the game already.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Well there are two accounts with your name so check out the comments one is banned! And not very nice either
@Ricky-Spanish it’s certainly not me. I’m too old for all that nonsense
@PsBoxSwitchOwner You should report it maybe if you can so.Whoever it is is always stirring up things and getting banned the account was only created a short while ago!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner The name is psdeckswitchowner which is very similar to yours I'll keep an eye out for the real one (you)
@Fiendish-Beaver This is a very interesting take and does make a lot of sense. My only question to MS would be why they didn't offer similar help to get the game out on the S? MS have a blank cheque book and could have potentially solved this issue without anyone knowing about the S issues but seem to have instead gone for the 'complain to the masses about Sony spending money to get the game out' route.
Also in answer to a lot of people saying that MS should drop the S and not hold parity across the X - that would be the final nail in the coffin for MS. Owning just the S it would end my ability to play current gen games that only release on the X. Not a good option!
It's not confusing at all. Microsoft/Phil and Jez (can't be trusted) Corden lied again, it's as simple as that.
@Ricky-Spanish I wouldn’t keep an eye out. I speak nonsense so you aren’t missing anything!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner You speak more sense than the other guy by far mate
It isn’t confusing is just MS being sneaky as usual with their wording:
“we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us”
The keywords here are “that have been raised to us” meaning the devs haven’t made known issues with series S development, not that there aren’t any. The fact they added a line also about “other platform holders” blah blah makes it seem like there was a PS deal.
This is deceitfully clever wording.
I completely agree, @StonyKL. Microsoft should also have offered assistance. The only conclusion I can come to is that Game Science were already committed to working on the PlayStation version when Microsoft made the offer and the developers were unable to do both at the same time. Sony are always hot on games originating from this region, which is why they often have this type of exclusive, and may have become aware of it sooner than Microsoft. That may not be the case though, as it is also the case that Microsoft are often slow off the mark (Baldur's Gate 3 is a great example of this!).
I imagine that Microsoft are currently working with Game Science to get the game running on the S as we speak. The fact that it is taking so long, is probably testament to how difficult that task it proving, even with the support of the experts at Microsoft. With Spencer having teased news on the game, I can only assume that it will be coming fairly soon...
@DennisReynolds yeah people also don’t know how video game consoles work. They’re little computers, not blenders. More power does not equal able to solve poor optimization. The PS5 was generating 50% of the frames with software and it ran terribly before the Pro update. If your argument is a console must be powerful enough to run even the worst optimized game, then have fun with your $1500 PS6 Pro max at 30 fps
@PSDeckSwitchOwner Exactly
@DannZan I mean its logic right? If the PS5 and Pro struggle with it why would the Series S fair any better?
Want to know what the real issue is? The Devs have sod all experience with consoles, this was the first console game they ever made and it very much shows like with the sheer abuse of frame gen and other weird choices. A better more experienced team could most likely get far better visuals and at a real 60fps but these Devs are clearly still learning. Finally they're using an outdated version of Unreal 5 so that doesn't help either.
Meh. Storm in a teacup.
@DennisReynolds Where do you get the part about them using an outdated version of UE5 from?
Still, if that's true, the whole situation with Black Myth reminds me partially of the whole debacle with Mighty No 9, where they pretty much shot for the moon by using Unreal Engine 3, since that had support for most systems, and then they never even finished those versions, and the game has some serious issues due to features baked into Unreal Engine 4.
There's clear signs that the developers of Black Myth shot for the moon and didn't check they had enough fuel. I'm actually glad there's not an XBOX version, since the game is sailing on a sea of hype... and soon they'll go careening off the end.
