It seems we've finally got an update about the Xbox version of Black Myth: Wukong.
A rating for the Xbox version has been spotted on the ESRB, which hopefully means we might get an update about a release date for this version of the game soon. As you can see below, it's been rated 'T' for teen and contains "blood and gore, language, partial nudity and violence".
Here's the official ESRB description:
"This is an action role-playing game in which players assume the role of a monkey on a quest to retrieve various relics. From a third-person perspective, players explore a fantasy world and engage in melee-style combat against enemies (e.g., enemy monks, mythical monsters). Players use a staff and magic spells to defeat enemies; players can also transform into different creatures, using additional attacks (e.g., whip lashes, lightning blade, fire slashes). Enemies emit blood when hit, and some explode into chunks of flesh when defeated. Battles are often frenetic, highlighted by impact sounds, cries of pain, and slow-motion effects. A handful of environments depict large bloodstains and animal carcasses; one sequence depicts a headless character with an exposed neck stump. In one stylized stop-motion scene, a female character is depicted with partially exposed breasts. The word “sh*t” is heard in the game."
If we hear any updates about this, we'll let you know.

Curious to see if it’ll run as poorly on Series X as it does on PS5. My guess is Series S will be either a blurry mess and run ok, or decent looking and 15fps.
Well that's cool. It's a good game. Not great by any means, but very good. Would recommend if you like this sort of thing. It is VERY hard though. Also wouldn't recommend the Series S version. There is a 0 percent chance that version is any good.
I hope they iron out some of the wrinkles and optimism well for the series x.

Thats good news imo. Im loving Wukong despite the fact its hard and Id love to see xbox players have a chance to try it. It wont be for everyone, but if it connects for you, its a big hitter.
China advertised mid game... over 80% of the sales are from China and everyone who I know and played it said it's nothing special except the good graphics IF you have the hardware to run it because it is so not well optimized.
@UndyingInsurgent95 don’t let grifters win and ruin your hobbies! The world sucks enough as it is to let people take hobbies away from you over culture war nonsonse.
If this is true its kind of weird it wasnt announced during the partner direct no?
It doesn't look that impressive to me from what I've seen and I'm not sure I want to give china any money in this day and age
@BIG3 Maybe Sony paid for full console exclusivity for 6 months ? (that would make it around mid February Xbox release) that would of stopped any announcments.
@Balaam_ It should run better on Series X, as it has full VRR and can handle those lower than 48 framerates that Sonys VRR can't.
@UndyingInsurgent95 lol.
I’ve avoided the game because it looks like a performance mess on PS5, that’s the only reason.
@Titntin You playing on PS5? Has performance improved?
@darkswabber Oh they're trying to take away gaming from everyone, but they won't succeed my friend. As for the game itself, it looks extremely bland. It's one of those "souls-like" games that grifters latched on to, despite over 80% of sales coming from China lol. It's not bad but it's not that good.
@Fenbops Ive not had much of an issue tbh, but I am using vrr which really helps. Bearing in mind my age, ive not noticed excessive input lag either, but that may be a bit different if you are sensituve to it. 😊
@Rog-X Gonna have to disagree on the exclusivity deal. Remember, sony markets the heck out of third party exclusives, and they didn't really have any for this game.
Honestly after seeing clips of invisible walls blocking perfectly normal looking terrain I've cooled a lot on the game. So I'll wait till I see a decent sale.
Some Xbox fans months ago “bah, they’re lying about technical issues and they could bring it here if they really WANTED to!”
Some Xbox fans now: “bah, it’s not that great a game and grifters did things, I’m not buying this garbage!”
Yet another souls like. I enjoyed my time with elden ring and dark souls 1 but I find the genre overdone now. Will be a skip for me.
@Rog-X
Yep the VRR is better in series x, which is also why I have a TV that has 120hz with LFC.
You have to make sure in the series x settings you force 120hz and a TV that can with all other features on as well.
Also read even the PS5 Pro is not having forced 120hz so no LFC. So now below 48fps in VRR unless it is programmed in by the developer of the game for PS5 and PS5 Pro. And still no quick resume either.
This is very good news.
Cause it surely looks like a hell of great game !
@Bigmanfan I agree 100%. It’s the definition of a good, but not great game. It has all the pieces to be great, but everything is so split all over the place. It’s also hard to the point of feeling repetitive at times because, I swear, the bosses are fixed to have you grind for a bit and then they suddenly get easier. The difficulty is inconsistent… and I dunno… it feels artificially difficult ant times. Not sure if anyone else felt that way. Theres also unnecessary backtracking. It’s not egregious, but it is unnecessary. It’s not really a Souls game, but more or less Souls inspired with a dash of Devil May Cry, sort of like how Stellar Blade was. I’d say it’s a bit better than Stellar Blade due to it feeling more distinctly like its own IP (Stellar Blade reminds me of other games, but better games, so it forces a comparison point by being similar to things like the superior Nier Automata, etc,. Wukong doesn’t have that issue) and level design. I may say Stellar Blade has better combat though. I’d say that they’re both 7/10 games, though I’d say Wukong teeters more at 7.5/10. Early on, I felt Wukong was an 8/10, but the further I went with it, the more noticeable some of the flaws in it get (and the more technical issues occur as well… hopefully there is less delay initially on Xbox than there was on PS5, as PC players did get the best version of the game).
Also, no idea how they’ll get this game working on the S without some serious chug and down res.
This seems like a good game to shadow drop during Microsofts Developers Direct in January, between Indiana Jones and Avowed.
I personally played this on the PlayStation 5, right after playing God of War Ragnarok, and with that bad boy playing at 60fps, Black Myth looked graphically excellent.. until it started to move. But this ended up being an unfair comparison as the game really was enjoyable as hell and had some really fantastic locations and set pieces! I think once I got used to the game running at half the speeds of Ragnarok, I definitely rated way higher myself than folk on here are, but then I am a huge Hack n Slash/Souls fan. This will run pretty good on the Series X, but the Series S will probably have some issues
@somnambulance Yep, my thought exactly. Haven't finished it yet, but those thoughts echo mine so far. I think inconsistency is the number 1 issue. Just beat Captain wise voice last night, and that boss is not good at all. But I do love how different the game feels. Has a very distinct style for sure. I'd say it's about a 7 for me.
It’s always a good thing to see good games come to Xbox. While the people clambering that this game is GOTY are talking out of their ass, it’s clear it’s a quality game. Just hope hope Xbox is more proactive with making sure games with a lot of potential launch day one on Xbox, which they seem to maybe doing getting some he likes of Wuchang day one on game pass.
Hopefully, they do a physical version maybe with a steelbook. I'll buy it regardless though.
@Bigmanfan I feel like the game honestly needed more time in the oven. Not from a technical point of view, per se, but from a basic how the game is framed point of view. If I would’ve made the game, I would’ve made the story more obvious for people unfamiliar with the source material. I could follow it because I know the story, but if I didn’t… honestly, it tells the same disjointed way that Sparking Zero explains Dragon Ball, which makes the cutscenes, as cool as they are, not make sense. And then I’d make difficulty options. I actually think the game might be more fun in an easy mode because you could soak in the diversity that the game does offer if that’s what you want to do. If it was a bit easier too, you wouldn’t notice which bosses are deliberately designed to kneecap you. I mean, I just remember back to the beginning of the game, and Wandering Wight was extremely punishing, but all the bosses around him followed a pattern and just took a bit of practice to learn. It didn’t make sense. It felt random and intentionally difficult because he was arbitrary in how he attacked. I noticed the same thing happens with random bosses as you progress and then some bosses that should be hard are cake walks. Wandering Wight should not have been harder than Black Bear Guai. It doesn’t feel like a skill thing, but unbalanced thing.

@Fishmasterflex96 I'd say he's even worse lol
@Nighto4 low key for real. It’s one thing to see a console fanboy be stupid, but it’s fair to say that taking the bait and being triggered by a game is arguably way worse.
No thanks. I'm over these types of games.
Would be smart if Xbox paid to have exclusive skins or a weapon ….. Phil .. right ?
Notice the 2tb series x is sold out on UK Xbox store.
If you on to maybe something good make some more Microsoft.
Hopefully this means a simultaneous digital and physical release, instead of just digital.
@somnambulance I think the main problems are because this is the first big game from game science. They clearly have a lot of potential, but also a lot to learn. I also strongly agree on difficulty options, which frankly every game should have. The game has some really cool combat, but it feels like it never gets to shine because you need to try hard the whole game. It feels like the design ideas are fighting against each other. Not sure about the story. I'm unfortunately not familiar with Journey to the West, and I honestly don't know what's going on.But I kinda like that? It's weird, but I just like how random crap can happen, and I'll never see it coming. It's kinda fun.
Disc release like PS5 or bust.
@Fishmasterflex96 Umm hunty, we are NOT talking about console wars. I don't engage in that petty crap, my life already has enough problems. What I'm talking about is right wing grifters using this game to spread their bigotry and hate. Those "Capital G GAaaMErs" have said so many nasty things about the LGBT community, not to mention POC and Asian people. Anything that isn't a straight white man is political and "forcefully" injected. I will not give my money to a studio that had allegations of sexism. Hope this clears it up.
@UndyingInsurgent95 I can agree with disliking those type of gamers, they have a lot of ***** that comes out of their mouth. Just more so trying to get to the point that just cause a bad group of people rally behind a product it doesn’t make the product at fault for their ***** options. Yes there are the allegations of sexism, but they are just allegations and of course it’s probably a few bad apples and not the entire studio. Just saying that if you don’t support a game from allegations then you can’t buy any Activison, Ubisoft, PlayStation, and most other AAA games cause they all have allegations.
Torn on this one. Happy for this game's huge success as it was targeted by the most gross culture warriors terminally online and in games media. Not going to buy it for snubbing Xbox.
The game looks wildly overrated, from what I've seen.
@JoyfulFire Not really a souls like. More like Jedi fallen order, it takes the campfire system from souls but it's more of a wide linear character action game other than that. It's probably best described as God of war without all the boring parts, with ffxvi combat but harder, and the souls campfire.
@Titntin just have to say that I'm playing in VR 😂 I'm just picturing this game, a headset, and you... Freaking awesome though. The one thing vr injection has taught me is that most of the cost of modern development is completely wasted until VR takes over mainstream. In 2d it's just impossible to really see or understand the detail put into modern games. When you go inside the game you realize just how much of a real world has been built in a way you can never really perceive on a flat screen. I think if they want to keep making multi hundred million dollar games, they NEED to start forcing VR into the norm. It's just burning money otherwise.
This games really addicting though. It didn't do anything new, at all, it's a retread of familiar ground, but somehow how puts it together in a way that just feels great
@Bigmanfan it's tough. It's not Souls tough though.
20m+ copies sold and not one on Xbox. Sums up this gen. Sick of it.
@Sifi very good point.
@NEStalgia Souls-like is such a meaningless term nowadays. People see one on one combat with blocking or dodging and scream “souls-like”! Steering clear while performing hand gestures to ward off evil spirits. It’s a boss rush action game, just a hard one.
@Jenkinss “Not going to buy it for snubbing Xbox.”
Surely the logical conclusion of doing this will mean LESS games get ported to Xbox. Cutting off your nose to spite your face.
My interest waned after I saw the Digital Foundry video on the PS5 version. No true 60fps mode is disappointing. Maybe the balanced mode could be okay with VRR, will have to wait and see what the final port ends up looking like.
@themightyant Yeah this is exactly why I bought Kena: Bridge of Spirits on launch, even though I was royally pissed off at the publisher for snubbing Xbox for so many years (and despite already owning the game on Steam). I needed to prove that there is a market for such games on Xbox.
@Cakefish same here. 60fps mode uses frame gen and it’s meant to be a lag fest. Otherwise I’d have probably picked it up by now.
@Savage_Joe all good points my friend. They don’t ever mention the ‘journalists’ smear campaign against the devs also which you could argue led us to where we are now.
@NEStalgia Lol! If you are really picturing me playing this with a VR headset on, then you may need to picture a sick bucket beside me!
I have a lot of sympathy for your views on what a game changer VR is, and I'd still love be part of that train. But I'm just not able to do it without getting ill, which is very frustrating.
I would not say it's impossible to see or appreciate the effort that's gone into these titles without VR. Given my development background I can assure you I can see the effort and every pixel that went into making the end result - it was my job to make this happen and I therefore notice things that maybe someone without my background might miss. VR can definitely help you appreciate these efforts more of course, as long as you can handle it
@Titntin Yep, the virtual sick bucket is part of the vision! To be fair it's not so much a train as much as it is a tricycle at the speed it's moving 😂
Yeah I can understand you'd see those details more readily, but even so, I suspect if you could do VR and went inside the worlds, even ones you worked on, you'd actually see them in a whole different way. There's something about actually standing in a place that makes the mind process it differently than seeing a picture of it. My jaw is dropping at seeing locals I thought I knew well and could imagine what they really look like if you could go there but when I see it I'm vr, I feel like I've never actually seen it before. Although part of that is being able to see the places off to the sides you normally can't see, and I still find it mind blowing when you see how much is there that you never actually even get to see in flat play because now you get to look around all the corners, so that part isn't new for you 😁
Heck I'm even trying to tolerate the humor of high on life because in VR it's almost salvageable 😆
@themightyant Yeah, honestly I think even the "boss rush" categorization isn't right. Yeah it does highlight those but there's a whole lot of exploration too. And a ridiculous amount of upgrade trees.
@themightyant pants on head thinking right here.
Stick it on gamepass
I wish I cared about this genre. Looks cool but I would purchase and give up after 10 hours like Elden Ring I think.
Such a good game, probably my favorite this year. If you like Souls-likes & don't mind a challenge, you'll love it. It's very similar to 2018 God of War imo
On paper it should run better on Xbox. In reality it doesn't run on Xbox at all.
