Just over a year ago, Xbox was embroiled in Series S drama relating to mega-popular RPG Baldur's Gate 3 - developer Larian Studios just couldn't get split-screen running on the less-powerful machine. Well, a year on from Microsoft granting them the option to omit the feature, Larian has got split-screen co-op working on Xbox Series S.
In a new blog post detailing the upcoming Patch 8 for BG3, Larian has confirmed that Series S split-screen support is in the works - and players can test it out right now! If you're an Xbox Insider that owns Baldur's Gate 3, you can take part in the team's Patch 8 stress test ahead of the update's full release.
Here's how to download the Baldur's Gate 3 stress test via the Xbox Insider Hub:
- Open (or install) the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox Series X|S
- Go to "Previews" and then "Baldur's Gate 3"
- Hit the "Join" button
- Install the Patch 8 Stress Test when you're redirected to the Microsoft Store
If you are going to try this out, keep in mind that the stress test is accessible via a totally different version of Baldur's Gate 3, which means you'll need to re-download it via the specific Microsoft Store page. And, any progress made on the stress test build will not carry back over to your main game save file. Still, if you've been waiting for this feature it might be worth a look - and hopefully Larian can get this mode in good shape for the full release.
The team is making lots of other changes in Patch 8 as well, including another huge feature in the form of full crossplay support. Yep, from the next update, Baldur's Gate 3 players on Xbox, PlayStation and PC will be able to play together - simply link your Larian account and await the arrival of a crossplay option in BG3 Patch 8.
Anyway, it's nice to see the team make real progress in getting the Series S version of Baldur's Gate 3 feature complete; it feels like only yesterday we were wrapped up in this whole Xbox drama. If you've already given Larian's stress test a go, tell us what you made of it down in the comments below.

I just gotta give credit to Larian for doing wonders with the S, knowing it's RAM limitations. I really should get this game...
@UndyingInsurgent95 Its a great game overall and one I would say most people should try. Its also better now as they added some extra endings over time. If You played either of the Divinity Original Sin games then this is similar but more refined.
Oh really so the series s can run split screen after all even if it is a good while after release!!
Shows the Devs can make it work with the series s if they put in enough effort and want to get it done as nobody would of complained if they never added this to series s hopefully the wo Kong or whatever it's called Devs can look at this and get the Xbox version of the game sorted!!
Better late than never. Which is a saying the internet doesn't know about, or believe in.
Drama?! Larian are just Sony fanboys trying to get cool points by pretending Series S is weak.
Great to see. Though I'm more looking forward to progress on cross platform multiplayer so I can play with friends on other platforms.
Now, who said it wasn't possible on the S? :-/
I bet they’re getting it ready for switch 2 launch and porting the series S version.
I would get it, but perverse things like actual bestiality being possible means I've no interest in supporting it.
Who even asked for this? What kind of freaks still want to play anything split-screen, let alone a turn-based RPG? We used to play split-screen out of necessity, not because it was a great way to play together. Remembering Twisted Metal and all the clones of it on split-screen and wishing we could hook up another TV and each have our own screen like we could with Command and Conquer on PSX Dual-link. I've lived through the entire evolution of video games and am certain only the tiniest minority of gamers see this as a "feature".
