Yesterday, Xbox shared a lengthy documentary on its upcoming 2025 game South of Midnight, and Kinda Funny's Parris Lilly has followed this up by revealing some important information about the Compulsion Games title.
With Parris recently visiting the Canadian Xbox Game Studio, the presenter can reveal that South of Midnight is targeting 60FPS on both Xbox Series X and S. The title is also, surprisingly, using Unreal Engine 4 rather than Epic's latest version of the game-making technology.
In addition to these technical details, Lilly also took to social media to tell us that the game is roughly 12 hours long, and that its unique stop motion animation can be turned off during gameplay - but not in cutscenes.
This is all sounding pretty good then, and we're not too concerned by that game length given that South of Midnight is an Xbox Game Pass title too. Microsoft currently has this one targeting 2025, but yesterday's news blowout did hint at a potential April release date for the upcoming Xbox adventure.
What do you think to this fresh South of Midnight information? Talk to us about these new details down below.

12 hours long is perfect for this sort of game imo. Looking forward to this, though I wasn't wholly impressed by the gameplay.
Probably don’t want to confirm the date since they’re looking into launching it on PS5 aren’t they?
Being able to turn off the animation should appeal to those who was saying it was making them sick.
@themightyant yeah 12 hours is "just right".
Looking forward to playing this!
Nice that the developers are providing the option to remove the stop-motion during gameplay for those who are bothered by it. I will be keeping it on.
I’m sure Michael Scott has a witty rejoinder at the ready for this, but if it’s good I don’t really care how long it is.
Can’t wait for this one
This one just keeps sounding better and better. Man, am I glad this one is going to be concise in its vision. 12 hours is perfect, especially if you can extend it with exploration if you desire.
Very hyped for this game. It looks very cool and has the perfect game lenght for a fine Gamepass release. Stop motion cut scenes doesnt bother me at all but the option to turn it off during gameplay is a big positive!
Removed - unconstructive
@abe_hikura I've seen the documentary three times now and realized that the issue with the stop motion style is that it looks to be a hard cap on the framerate. I think if they kept the characters and environment at the lower frame rate, but made the camera a buttery smooth 60fps it would sell the style a lot better and there would be a lot less people complaining about it.
But yeah, I'm glad to hear it's 12 hours. If it focuses on story and character 12 is enough to tell a very polished and effective story. Xbox needs more 1st person narrative driven games.
Can't wait to try this on my series x day one ,gamepass! But if I'll buy it depends on how good it is
@SaintRasmus You mean like smash hits Flintlock and Unknown 9?
I need to see what the game looks like without the stop motion, everything I've seen looks indistinguishable from any other game at 10fps. Fromsoft should have just said Blighttown was stop motion and no one would have given Dark Souls a hard time.
@Jenkinss Haha, I've actually played Unknown 9. So much potential but so many issues (story, voice acting, graphics, glitches etc). It's actually a good game for 20 dollars though.
Thank the gods it’s a 60fps game. That is a relief to hear.
@IOI nah, more of a artyish niche game likely releasing a year after like hi-fi rush
Another instant dead on arrival flop game from Xbox Studios!
Game looks interesting as a whole. But this stop motion animation... If you can turn it off it means developers know that their "feature" is highly controversial. But then again you can't turn it off in cutscenes, which probably means turning it off was a last minute call after that gameplay demo on Xbox conference - they just didn't have time and resources to remake all the cutscenes.
So working on this "feature" doesn't seem like a time well spent. And there was no one who could tell them that's a bad idea?
@dreadful reading most of your previous comments it's clear that you never have anything positive or constructive to say. Have you ever considered replacing your XBOX for something you like? Or you could play "the silent game" for a change
The stop motion gives me some "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" vibes. It might be a risky creative decision for a game but let's see how it the gameplay feels like, and having the option to turn it off is a nice option.
I love games that respect our time so 12hrs is more than fine
@Misternobody Oh, he’s far from alone. Personally I rather enjoy playing games on my Xbox, which is why I post on here, but for some people it appears to be a completely miserable chore (and boy, will they tell us about it)!
@Misternobody When Xbox gives me something to be positive about them I will be. Until then I'll keep waiting for something good. But I wont hold my breath.
You're really going to sit here and pretend like Xbox Studios are putting out must have games? Come on bro.
I can see this getting 7/10, a little palate cleaner on Gamepass between bigger/better games.
@dreadful I never said that. I like that fact that they are taking some risks (Deathloop, Hellblade 2, As Dusk Falls, Pentiment) and there's an audience for these games that I might not be part of.
Honest question: what games (or type of) do you play on Xbox or somewhere else that you would like to see more frequently?
