Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is Xbox's last big first party release of the year, and it sounds like we're in for quite a lengthy experience when the adventure drops onto Xbox Game Pass next month.
Speaking in a fun little interview where MachineGames devs answered over 100 rapid fire questions about the title, the team said that its upcoming Indiana Jones experience is "by far the biggest and longest game" that it's ever created.
We didn't get any actual figures here, but the studio's last game — 2017's Wolfenstein 2 — clocked in at 10-12 hours for the main story, and well over 15 hours including side objectives - so you can expect Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to be a decent chunk longer than that.
And, we're inclined to believe it. Last month, we we went hands on with over three hours of The Great Circle, and we felt like we'd only just scratched the surface of this globe-trotting Xbox adventure. Some of the levels tucked in here are huge sprawling expanses - and we're expecting to spend a good chunk of time with this game early next month.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launches for Xbox Game Pass on December 9, and early access begins on December 6.

[Cue Indiana Jones theme]
Looking forward to this immensely but bragging about game length I think is a weird thing to do in 2024. I'm a firm believer less is often more. Wolfenstein, Uncharted etc. were far better for keeping their adventures to around 10-15 hours. Hopefully this doesn't drag.
Haven't checked any of the recent videos and previews as i'm already sold and want to go in as blind as possible Day 1... assuming performance is there.
Xbox needs a win, so I really hope that this is a well received, polished experience. It needs to be an 8+ across the board. A win for Xbox and for Game Pass, which has been severely lacking in recent times. I have my fingers crossed for Indiana Jones. Knowing what Xbox has done recently does not fill me with confidence, but I would dearly love to have by doubts proved wrong...
Bring it on. I like a decent story not a 'complete in a couple of days' game.
Have to say,. @themightyant, I don't know how it is possible to complete either of those games (franchises) in 10-15 hours. I think even on the easiest difficulties, it would be a tough challenge.
According to How long to beat for a complete run through, Wolfenstein 2 averages at 33 hours, and Uncharted 4 was 31.5 hours...
I kinda wish they would stop spoiling the game with new footage. I'm gonna avoid these videos entirely till I play it. Even if I hold some concerns, there's enough shown in the first trailer to warrant me pre-ordering.
@Fiendish-Beaver Those times are for "completionist" (1000GS or Platinum) which in the case of Uncharted requires multiple playthroughs as Crushing Difficulty only unlocks AFTER you have played it once. Wolfenstein 2 ALSO requires 2 (or 3) playthroughs.
The time given to complete the main game ONCE is the first one which is all around 10-15 hours OR "main + extra" which includes side content which is 15-18 hours for most of these games.
I'm not too concerned as long as they haven't padded it out for padding it out's sake. Quality trumps quantity.
Not every game needs to be a long one. Quality over quantity and all that. Black Ops 6 took me about 10-12 hours to finish and I thought it was the perfect length. Looking forward to this one!
Entirely agree with you when it comes to quality over quantity, @themightyant, and indeed arguably, that is where Starfield suffered so badly. Give us 10 loaded planets to explore over 1000 empty planets any day.
It may just be me then! I take my time when playing games. I just looked at my stats for Wolfenstein 2 and I played it on Do it or Die difficulty (so not the easiest, or the hardest) and I took 44 hours to complete the game, undertaking just one run. I don't have Uncharted installed on my PS5, so I cannot check how long I played it for, but I did only go through each game once, though I always do absolutely everything I can.
As another example though; I was talking to someone the other day regarding Dragon Age: Veilguard. They said they had completed the game in 60 hours. I have yet to finished to game (I'm about to start the last mission) and I have done absolutely everything I can (every side mission, companion quest, and collected all the chests etc.) and I have thus far played for 160 hours! A whole 100 hours more than the person I was speaking to...
@Fiendish-Beaver I'm exactly the same mate, a very slow gamer, both in how I play and methodically checking everywhere. I have to add at least 25% to 50+% on top of HLTB numbers. *
But that's not really what they are comparing to I don't think. They are comparing vs their previous game. I'd prefer it to be shorter but higher quality, than longer and less quality, or allowing it to drag on till the mechanics are tired.
My hopes are still sky high for this game, but this answer is weird to me, it sounds more like a bad thing than a good one to my tastes.
EDIT: My flat mate used to get pissed off watching me play and fight everything, check every corner. He was the opposite, just ran through the game, skipping fights or content he didn't HAVE to play. Neither is right, but I couldn't play like him, would feel I was missing out.
@Fiendish-Beaver do you tend to keep game on pause for a while often? If you played 100hrs more, well there is not enough content to do that lol.
I have a friend that has any game double/triple of completionist time, but he literally never turns off the game at all. Just pauses and then returns in 2 hours lol to continue
I actually think its gonna be well received and its funny to see first exciting 1st party xbox game in a while announced to ps5 so early. Like they are keeping starfield and redfall exclusive lol.
I'm really excited for this game but I think there is a decent chance that people will be lower on it than expected. I'm thinking 79-83 metacritic. The main complaint will probably be the stealth heavy combat when people seem to be expecting this to be xboxs answer to uncharted where you spray bullets at every enemy.
I'm excited for this but I think others aren't going to be prepared for the likely stealth and puzzle heavy gameplay compared to other machine games.
@Fiendish-Beaver
I wonder if it's an age thing? As a 60 plus myself I find I am completely in understanding of what you say - if someone tells me a game is about 50 hours for a completist run it will often take me 120, so my rule of thumb is to double what everyone else says and then add a bit more!
I like to think its because us older guys know how to savour our experiences 🤣
As for the game, I'm really hoping that this is the classic that Xbox deserves. It looks fantastic in the previews, I like the concentration on exploration and puzzles and I'm glad they have not concentrated on the 1st person action, as that's the only bit I have concerns over. Not long to wait now...
@Fiendish-Beaver
Totally with you on the needs a win.
I gave time to give Stalker 2 a chance and we know what happened there.
So now it’s Indy game turn.
As for Avowed it’s lost on me a 30fps.
But then again what’s the point I will be playing Stalker 2 and Indy if I wish the most optimised they can be on PS5 Pro.
Unfortunately Xbox didn’t bother with a mid generation machine so series x last grip on me, the best place to play third party games or Xbox games coming to consoles is on the PS5 Pro now.
I literally don’t see any point of an Xbox console for me. As for game pass, I will pick the latest Xbox studio game to play and will pay if and a very big if they produce a top quality AAA game.
If they manage one big quality AAA critically acclaimed game in one year that will be a miracle, but will only cost me £60 and also playing the game at its best on PS5 Pro.
I ain’t going lie - I already have the drive space free and ready to go… time to not read anything now and enjoy…
@Titntin yes, I am a double the time spent player as well… I can’t dedicate more than an hour or two and by the time I get back forgot something and have to loop back …
@BacklogBrad I think this has 85+ written all over it. Being an Xbox first party game is what makes people nervous, but this is machine games and they never miss. Plus, looks like they got the tone absolutely spot on, and previews are very positive.
I can't wait!
With the last 2 years being total failures for MS and Avowed being confirmed DOA. I’m a little worried with the rumors saying this game is going to only have a quarter of the player base that was the unmitigated disaster of Dragon Age.
I’m still not sure about them using first person view for this sort of game, but will definitely give it a go as it’s on GP.
@Coletrain I hope so. It's one of my most anticipated games. It's seems like a game made specifically for me but if I had to guess critic or user scores I would bet on low 8 maybe even high 7.
@Titntin @Fiendish-Beaver I think some of it is old age, I also fall asleep in front of the TV often enough to accidentally inflate my numbers
I do keep my console on pause every now and again, @Millionski. There is absolutely no doubt that the game has been on pause for 2 or 3 hours in total. If it is on when I come on to my PC to post a comment here, for example, I don't turn it off. However, if I know I'm going to be busy for 15 minutes or more, I do tend to turn the console off.
When it comes to Dragon Age though, I had everything maxed out by Act 11 (of 15). I know for a fact that I spent way too long smashing every single crate and barrel in every area I entered to obtain any loot. It was a bit frustrating too at times, because when you left the area, and then returned, someone had put all the crates and barrels back meaning I had to smash them all again! 🤣
Mind you, it was because I spent so long looking for loot that I was able to max out every weapon and armour worn by my character and every companion, plus max out every store. I was make level (50) during Act 11 too. That 160 hours also includes returning to all the areas to locate those few chests that I had not got in my initial search of the areas, either because I had missed them, or (more likely) that the area wasn't initially fully open.
The only time I ever fall asleep when my console is on, @themightyant, is when I'm searching through the Xbox Store, as that can get quite boring. It's exceptionally rare for me to close my eyes when I'm actually playing... 😉
That's what I do, @Titntin. If a game has exploration, and the developer says 50 hours, I know I'm looking at 100 hours. I never understand people just running through a game as you only get part of the story if you miss out on the side-quests and what have you. Plus I like to have every advantage I can when I'm facing the end boss at the end of the game. I want the best weapons, maxed out and as much health as I can find...! 😂
I like to think that I like to savour the experience, and that I have stamina... 😉
All games last longer for me. I’m the guy who obeys the traffic laws in GTA V and walks around Thedas rather than running. My Rook has far too much dignity to be seen running.
Looking forward to playing it when it releases on Game Pass
I just hope it’s good. I don’t care how long it is. In fact, I prefer my games on the shorter side, so I hope this one isn’t TOO long. Give me a nice 10-20 hour game and that’s the sweet spot.
I can’t lie, when developers brag about how long their games are my interest dips a little.
Ok. Though as long as the content is good I don't really mind too much how long a game is. I'd rather a short 3-5 hours than the same content spread over 10-20 with molasses pacing.
My recollection of Wolfenstein 1 and 2 were that they kept a good pace and kept things fresh with twists and turns. If they can bring that same energy but more of it I'm onboard.
Didn't Machine Games also do Wolfenstein 3? The less liked of the modern trilogy? Not counting Old Blood
I really hope it's good, still vaguely remember watching temple of doom at the cinema!!!
As somebody who owns an XSX and PS5, it's funny how over on the PS5 sites everybody is writing it off just because it's in first person, whereas here everybody just hopes that it's good... but expects the worst
@Fiendish-Beaver 31.5 hours to beat UC4 is pretty absurd. I believe I was around 16-18 hours and it’s by far the longest in the series.
I honestly cannot remember how long it took me, @FatalBubbles. 31.5 hours is what it says on How Long To Beat.com. but as someone else said, maybe the game requires multiple playthroughs. I honestly don't remember.
On a side note, ages ago, on the very first time I saw your name I initially thought it said 'FartBubbles', and from then on, whenever I see you post a comment, it makes me chuckle. No offence intended... 😂
@Fiendish-Beaver 😂😂😂
While playing Halo I’ve had people say Fat Al Bubbles too. So apparently it’s a tricky one.
