When Amazon's Fallout TV show really took off earlier this year, and Fallout fever was in full swing, there were lots of eyebrows raised about Bethesda not having a game ready to launch alongside the show - but the head of Xbox believes that Fallout 5 being late actually benefitted the TV series.
Speaking at New York’s Paley International Summit, Phil Spencer talked about Fallout, and how the team fully focusing on the TV show "gave us some creative liberty that [we] wouldn't have had" if Xbox was also trying to launch the next Fallout game at the same time.
"We didn't have a new game lined up for the launch,
I actually think that gave us some creative liberty that [we] wouldn't have had if we tried to coordinate production of two very different creative processes to land at the same time."
Phil went on to say that working on the TV show — and the success that's ultimately brought the team — "is much more long term" than trying to capitalise on increased game sales for Fallout 5. To be fair, Fallout feels much more mainstream now, which is probably what Phil's getting at here!
Of course, the next Fallout game from Bethesda will follow after The Elder Scrolls 6 - which is itself a ways off from releasing right now. At least Fallout fans have the TV show's upcoming second season to look forward to in the meantime.
