When Amazon's Fallout TV show really took off earlier this year, and Fallout fever was in full swing, there were lots of eyebrows raised about Bethesda not having a game ready to launch alongside the show - but the head of Xbox believes that Fallout 5 being late actually benefitted the TV series.
Speaking at New York’s Paley International Summit, Phil Spencer talked about Fallout, and how the team fully focusing on the TV show "gave us some creative liberty that [we] wouldn't have had" if Xbox was also trying to launch the next Fallout game at the same time.
"We didn't have a new game lined up for the launch,
I actually think that gave us some creative liberty that [we] wouldn't have had if we tried to coordinate production of two very different creative processes to land at the same time."
Phil went on to say that working on the TV show — and the success that's ultimately brought the team — "is much more long term" than trying to capitalise on increased game sales for Fallout 5. To be fair, Fallout feels much more mainstream now, which is probably what Phil's getting at here!
Of course, the next Fallout game from Bethesda will follow after The Elder Scrolls 6 - which is itself a ways off from releasing right now. At least Fallout fans have the TV show's upcoming second season to look forward to in the meantime.
Do you agree with what Phil's saying here? Spread some uranium fever in the comments section down below.

They undoubtedly should have a second studio working on the Fallout franchise right now! It seems foolish to me not to be doing that...
@Fiendish-Beaver Gosh, if only there was a studio under Microsoft's umbrella that also knows how to make Fallout games.... 🤔
Not to mention how it would be nearly impossible to coordinate a show and new AAA game coming out at the same time. The Fallout show proved how it is completely unnecessary to even try. The show was a massive success and it even gave all the legacy games another life. Fallout 5 will be huge no matter what.
I don't agree with Phil's statement but I can't wait for fallout season 2 god knows when will see fallout 5 or another elder scrolls I know the games are huge but come on way to long a wait!
@GamingFan4Lyf Perhaps, but Obsidian's schedule looks pretty full they just launched Pentiment on Switch and PS5 and are working on Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. Still they would get to Fallout 5 sooner than BGS.
Yes, @GamingFan4Lyf, it would be really handy if Microsoft had a studio capable of making a game like Fallout: New Vegas, for example... 🤔
I disagree and feel the opposite.
Not having a new game ready pushed sales for the back catalogue which would not happened if new game was out.
All sale to new game now is not lost sales. If that makes sense start I'm stating in theory.
Translation: We didn't bother to have a new Fallout game ready because Fallout 76 and Fallout Shelters is filled with microtransactions we want to sell.
We have Stalker 2 next week which while being much grittier, realistic & more hardcore it does still share a lot of Fallout dna. At least in terms of environmental story telling & sand box exploring (from what i have gleaned from previews etc.)
While I would welcome a new Fallout game we still have plenty of options in the meanwhile.
I sort of agree. The show was the best thing to happen to Fallout since New Vegas. If they had rushed out a subpar or even just good enough Fallout, it would’ve hurt things, especially right next to Fallout London too.
